scholes0: François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture A Benin republic prince of Allada Dahomean descent led and organized the Haitian revolution after everyone involved engaged in a Voodoo blood pact at the ceremony of Bos Caiman.
Some people should stop trying to appropriate the Hairian revolution which was a joint rejection by all slaves of African desxent on that Island against oppression and slavery.
Amazingly enough, three major ethnic groups of contemporary Nigeria all had revolutionary guards.
Igbo people stand out in the history of Haiti, ask authentic Haitians.
charliejose: The enthusiasm exhibited by Nigerians over the arrest of someone that doesn't in anyway affect their lives is just surprising. Yet they are silent on the politicians that suck this country dry of her resources, killing their loved ones by a failure in the provision of good health care, good roads and other indispensable amenities. Talk about an irking hypocrisy and a heightened misplaced priority.
It's not surprising at all, this is how powerless people act. They turn on each other, this is the reason why they burn people alive for stealing onions.
Rmxr: This one is even doing comparison God, why are ipobs so daft Bwahahaha Imagine a Igbo talking about crime lol. People that glorify crime and call it hustle. In the SW, we don't defend them. In potopoto republic, they are awarded chieftancy titles
They’ve fled violence, poverty, and terrorism – and made the often perilous journey across the Mediterranean from Africa and the Middle East. But for the more than 100,000 migrants who’ve arrived in Italy so far this year, the life that awaits them can be almost as dangerous as the one they left behind.
This is particularly true for economic migrants, who don’t have the same legal status as refugees, and aren’t given the same work permits or financial aid to help them survive. Barred from the legal workforce, and with few financial options, many are targeted by criminal gangs — supported by the Italian mafia — and thrust into a life of sex slavery and drug trafficking.
That’s what VICE News discovered after visiting Ballarò, a small market area, and traditional mafia stronghold near Palermo, Sicily, where the infamous Cosa Nostra mafia syndicate continues to wield power.
Shawnnn01: Where are all the Igbotic morons that were chastising Okorocha for erecting the statue ? Thank God we have one reasonable Igbo man who does not expect the world to drool at his feet simply because he is a Jew from the land of the rising sun. I hope the millions of senseless Igbo youth that swallowed the brain wash of Ipob Kanu will at least understand in the world over give and take is the order of the day not the foolish senseless senile demand of the entire Igbo nation.
So diplomacy is made by building statues? That's the logic here? What exactly in Owerri gaining from this that South Africa isn't gaining ten fold?

At least the OP is famzing with a human being.... A popular one at that... Not smiling like a constipated cow with some inanimate stuff
And incase you didn't think we would notice.... That seat you sitting on is obviously not yours... Or how do you explain a suit jacket hanging on the chair while you have one on? .... .. Typical borrow-pose Bobo.
aribisala0: No we are not reading that. We can do this till Christmas it does not constitute an argument just your wishes
Your arguments are pointless. Olaudah Euqiano used an Igbo name and an Igbo identity, whether by birth or by choice, he is Igbo No it is your own arguments that are pointless. How can a person be this pained that a historical figure is who he said he is? Na wah.
aribisala0: My point is there is no convincing evidence that he was even born in AFrica in the first place except for what he claims which he could have picked up from other slaves. He could mention Eboe words but not the names of his mother or father.? Is that credible
You are contradicting yourself. He was separated from his language for 30 years and then was hired to speak Eboe?
Do not insult Africans if I am ignorant I am ignorant period. Don't Africanize ignorance. One expects more sense than that from you.
If I am ignorant that is not a crime I am able and willing to be persuaded by facts if you can provide them. Olaudah contradicted himself on at least two occasions saying he was born in the Americas. uch of his narrative cannot be verified and the lack of a convincing narrative about his village and ancestry makes me doubt the whole enterprise.
Go and read the story of The Hebrew in captivity they anchored themselves and their origin firmly in memory . A child who is not literate has often highly developed linguistic memory. That was the African way. Every year he would hear verbal stories about his ancestors. There is no way an 18th century Eboe child of 11 would not know about ancestor wordhip.
No way he would forget his father mother or cousins names. That is one thing he will hold on to till he dies and this man just appeared in high society and claimed to be from Africa. Even if he did not say he was Eboe I would not hold that against him because many people at that time did not identify that way rather it would be by clan. He would not forget his clan.Never!
Who said he forgot his clan? Are we not reading Essaka in his book? Your argument is decades late, his origin has been placed to be more than likely in Igboland, and as has been said his nationalistic stance regarding his Igbo identity probably means he could have been Igbo even if he was born in the Carolinas, apart from that you're expecting an 11 year old child with poor English who was seen as property to have solid information on his documents, you're expecting a man who had to take the legal name of Gustavus Vassa in order not to be mistaken as an unsold African to be completely transparent in all of his dealings even when his friend had been kidnapped and sold into slavery?
Your arguments are pointless. Olaudah Euqiano used an Igbo name and an Igbo identity, whether by birth or by choice, he is Igbo.
sukkot: you cant enslave yoruba man. we are warriors. thats all propaganda. only igbos were enslaved. once olaudah stepped into igbo-land he got enslaved. had he remained in bini he would not be enslaved lmao
This is an Oyo man in Brazil, close your mouth small.
One of the most remarkable features of Equiano’s story is his use of African origins to establish his credibility as a critic of European imperialism in Africa. Recent research, however, has raised questions about whether Equiano was born an Igbo (Ibo) in Africa, as he claims in his autobiography. His baptismal record in Westminster, England, lists him on February 9, 1759, as “Gustavus Vassa a Black born in Carolina 12 years old.” Scholars have also debated whether Equiano’s account of Igbo life in his autobiography is based on reading rather than memory. In the absence of scholarly consensus on these controversial matters, The Interesting Narrative remains a pivotal text in portraying Africa as neither morally benighted nor culturally backward but rather as a model of social harmony defiled by Euro-American greed.
aribisala0: There is no scholarship on him period so save us the hyperbole. It is really embarrassing to observe you folk in your desperation.
The truth is that a fully grown man wrote a book about his obscure origins and no one will ever know what the truth is. What I do not believe is how anyone who is 11 years old brought up in a tribal setting as was precolonial Nigeria would forget his language. People were not literate but they learnt their lineages, and other tribal stories . I am not Igbo but I read Achebe's Things Fall Apart decades ago and still remember many of the proverbs and sayings. Any such kid would know his lineage and the founder of his clan at the age of 11 in precolonial Igbo land and most of southern Nigeria. Certainly he would remember the names of his father and mother?
So you're comparing proverbs written in English to a man who had been separated from his language for over 30 years? Since he was a pre-pubescent? You don't know what you're talking about, if you did you'd know that there are Igbo words in his book and that Equiano himself said he was hired to speak Igbo to Igbo people working in Jamaica.
bakynes: Abeg we don argue this thing tire for the other two threads, even articles from Google Search recognize his origin is a matter of controversy whether na Eboe(Igbo) or Eboe (Edo) or Etsako(Essaka) or Isseke in Anambra. Bottom line be say he tried his best to abolish slave trade in Britain.
The controversy is whether he was born in Igboland or in the Carolinas in America, not whether if he was Etsako or whatever, there is no credible scholar that has ever said Olaudah Equiano was an Edo or Etsako.
eziokwubundunuwa: Have you been there to see the statues? They are many and represent great leaders from Africa including Zuma, Ekwueme, Obasanjo, Akufo-Addo and Sirleaf.
