WOUNDED NIGERIA

Nigeria in those good old days when i was still about to be conceived was a beautiful land filled with milk and honey. We were rich, hence we borrowed to nations, we were great, hence, we were feared, all our sectors were working so perfectly that the DEVIL became jealous of Nigeria as a nation. On independence we stood still on the roads singing arise O compatriots because Nigeria’s call was finally obeyed. There was poverty but we could eat three square meals. There was pain but we were happy. Suddenly, so suddenly DIVERSITY   started a fight with unity, bringing forth suppression, oppression, and depression .The same unity that unfaithfully brought independence to our mindset but enslaved our own body.
Here comes  a nation with more than 1600 languages, more than 700 local government areas with just 36 states, then we were told that it is UNITY IN DIVERSITY. They called us out on election day to vote for their enrichment , and out of ignorance , we sold our future to them , in return, they gave us some little Naira notes or at most a Ghana Must Go bags filled with Naira notes at the campaign ground. In their own hearts , they called us fools  because they knew they will get it back in zillion folds from our own sweat .
At a point, we began killing ourselves in the name of religion because of idleness and poverty, in the same name of religion , we sent ASUU on strike for more than three months now and we renamed it BOKO HARAM.
Our land that was filled with milk and honey , became over-flooded with blood and doom, the blood of millions  of innocent Nigerians, hence the BLOOD IN OUR OWN HANDS.As if  it was not enough, Mr CALAMITY visited our great nation  without waiting for NEMESIS, so when finally NEMESIS visited, the nation that was once strong and mighty became wounded. Like a wounded lion we roared  but even the goat stood firm knowing that we can do nothing.
What then can we do to restore our dignity? A food for thought for every Nigerian that wants to join in rebuilding the nation.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), yesterday, gave fresh conditions that would make it go back to negotiate with the Federal Government.

Speaking with newsmen in Ibadan after a meeting with members of the union, its President, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie, stated that the striking university lecturers would rather die than beg the Federal Government to accede to its demands for better welfare package and improvement in the funding of the nation’s universities.

His words: “It is better to die fighting on our two feet instead of crawling on our knees. It is true this government has instrument of coercion but we know that truth will always prevail. Our current, agitation is beyond upward review of salaries. What we are saying is that the standard of education in our universities should be improved to the extent that our students graduating from the universities are exposed to the most current and better infrastructural materials, which will make them best of its kind in the world.

“Nigeria has the resources to improve our universities. What we lack is the political will. The current struggle is not ASUU struggle alone but the battle for all of us, Nigerians, to have the best of education for our children. We will succeed in this struggle if the people give us their supports,” wuzie stated.
According to him, “there is no way a country can develop without good education. Boko Haram crisis was as a result of lack of education. For we, at ASUU, what we are saying is that Nigeria should be able to create an environment where every child will have access to the best of education at university level, no matter the status or financial standing of his parents.”

He debunked insinuations that the union pulled out of the negotiation with the Federal Government team, saying it was the Federal Government team that actually pulled out.
His words: “By July 10, 2009, Deacon Gamaliel Onosode wrote a letter to ASUU saying that after reaching the agreement, he had finished his own assignment and that what was left now was for the individual university governing council to negotiate with its staff union. For him to come again to negotiate with us, he must get the mandate from his principal, saying that they are now ready to abide by the principle of collective bargaining and that he will sign an agreement at the end of it.

“In order not to waste our time because we went to meet the vice-president who said the government team must be present when negotiating all contentious issues for negotiation, we expect that they must produce the contentious issues so that we know what we are going to negotiate on when we get there.”

Ban on Ezendigbo titles: Ohanaeze chieftain begs Igbo Royal fathers

The purported ban on Ezendigbo title in Lagos State which followed the visit by the chairman of traditional rulers in the south east with other royal fathers recently to the state has elicited reactions from different individuals and groups.

A Chieftain of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Mike Chidebelu has joined issues with the royal fathers on the abolition.

“ Ezendigbo in Diaspora has been an old thing. It is just a name given to leaders by Igbo communities outside Igbo land. It has a process. You do not just become Ezendigbo by imposition. But suddenly and recently too, some influential Royal Fathers started visiting States and their first port of call happened to be Lagos and they said that the Ezendigbo in the diaspora has been bastardized and as a result has been banned.

We have not received any whitepaper on that. This is what we read in the Newspapers. But what we now ask is, can you ban what you are not part of? The government did not organize us as a community. It is a process through which a people work out themselves to organize. So how can government wake up to ban what they are not part of? Like I said before, Ezendigbo is just a name given to somebody who passed through a process to become a leader. That is why well meaning people and bodies like the student bodies, have come together to back the Ezendigbo of Lagos showing their solidarity saying that they (government) have no right to ban the position of Ezendigbo.”

The retiree from the Nigerian railway Corporation and former President Abagana Youth Association, Lagos branch took a swipe on the royal fathers for such ventures. He advised them to rather concentrate in their domains to attract dividend of democracy to their people than dissipate energy over Ezendigbo which is just a name.

He further said. “There are a lot of things lacking in their communities. Such things as good roads, water, electricity, school buildingsr among others. The royal fathers should concentrate their time on these things for their people who put them in leadership position and not to worry about bastardization of Ezendigbo in Diaspora. What is in the name? The most important thing is to do what your people asked you to do.”

massob raises alarm over Boko Haram

Apprehension could best describe the mood in the South East following an alarm that Islamic militants have perfected plans to attack the zone. Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), which raised the alarm at the weekend, said already most of the mosque and militancy formations in the area have been stockpiled with arms and ammunition for the purpose.

In a swift reaction, the immediate past President-General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Dr. Dozie Ikedife, has urged the Federal Government not to treat with laxity the matter but to investigate it.

MASSOB Director of Information, Comrade Uchenna Madu, in a statement alleged that the killing of Boko Haram leader, Mohammed Yusuf was deliberate in order to destroy the evidence that large consignment of arms and ammunition were being stockpiled in mosques and army depots in the South East and South-South for the planned attack.

“MASSOB through Biafra intelligent agency have uncovered plot by the northern government sponsored Islamic Militant Fundamentalist to launch genocide attack on Biafrans.
“Through our security reports, some mosque in Biafran land has become armoury depot for them.
MASSOB, however, warned that though it is a non-violent organisation, it would not sit and watch any group unleash genocide on Biafran land, urging the South easterners to be on alert.

“Biafrans are advised to be alert and ready to defend their fatherland. Even though MASSOB is a non-violent organisation, we will not fold our hands and watch Biafrans slaughtered like rams by Arewa people.
“MASSOB condemned the hurried manner in which the leader of Boko Haram, Mohamed Yusuf, was killed even when he (Yusuf) was handed over to police alive by soldiers.

‘MASSOB reasoned that his hurried execution by the Nigeria government was to destroy the evidence that large consignment of arms and ammunition are being off-loaded in some selected arms depots and mosques in the South-East/South-South purposely to launch deadly attacks on the Biafran people and also to save the faces of some northern influential politicians, religious/traditional leaders and businessmen who are directly and indirectly connected to Mohammed Yusuf and his group.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Ikedife has asked the Federal Government to ensure that every piece of information in a situation like the one the nation was in is not treated with ignominy.
“Even if it is true or not, this is an alarming situation and we are warning whoever that is trying to fish for trouble should do so in his fathers home and not in Igboland. We also urge the Inspector General of Police, Ogbonnaya Onovo, to look into this matter before it gets to an uncontrollable situation.

“We urge the Federal Government to take all necessary steps to nip this in the bud and avert more lost of lives and property in our country. Those who are trying to draw a final knife of disintegration should allow it to be done  peaceful instead of shedding blood of innocent peopl.

“But it is important to add that we may have no other option than to defend ourselves if it gets to that level, but I still have implicit confidence in the Federal Government and the inspector general of police that this looming danger would be averted.”

ASUU blasts FG for withdrawing from negotiation

The Owerri zone  of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASSU), on Wednesday denounced the  sudden withdrawal of  the Federal  Government  re-negotiating team, led by Deacon Gameriel  Onosode  from  the   discussions initiated  by President  Umaru Musa  Yar’Adua.

In a statement issued in Owerri, the union   argued  that  the re-negotiation provided a credible option  and an excellent opportunity for an amicable  resolution  of  the face-off with the Federal  Government.  It, therefore,  urged the Federal Government  team to return  to the  negotiating  table and respect the  principles of  collective  bargaining as the only practical means to accelerate the resolution of the conflict.

The union which comprises the Federal  University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Rivers  State  University of  Science and Technology (RUST), The University of  Port Harcourt, Imo State University (IMSU) Owerri expressed surprise that a government that professes the rule of law could be averse to collective bargaining   which it said had been upheld by all democratic societies as a basis for maintaining industrial peace and harmony.

Specifically, the statement disclosed  that ASSU is on strike to compel government to sign the re-negotiated  agreement reached with the union after  two and half years’ deliberations.

“We are shocked that government  functionaries and bureaucracy failed to appreciate the necessity and urgency of the critical issues addressed by the agreement.” The body, therefore, regretted that the Federal Government team prefers palliatives, adhoc measures  and half hearted awards which it said can never elevate the nation’s universities as rated universities in the Sub-Sahara Africa.

ASUU: Governors back FG

The 36 state governors have thrown their weight behind the Federal Government’s position on the demands of the striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The governors who met in Abuja yesterday under the aegis of National Economic Council (NEC) chaired by Vice President Goodluck Jonathan said the Federal Government could not sign any blanket agreement on salary increase with the striking lecturers that would be binding on them.
The Federal Government has always canvassed this position, arguing that the principle of federalism would not permit it to decide for the states how much to pay their lecturers.

Governor Aliyu Babangida of Niger State alongside governors Ikedi Ohaki and Bukola Saraki of Imo and Kwara respectively who briefed State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting said it was improper for ASUU to ask the Federal Government to sign an agreement with it on the 40 per cent increase in salaries for ASUU and 20 per cent for non-academic staff which would also be binding on the state governments.

“In a federal system, one arm cannot go and sign on behalf of others. To quote one of my heroes, you cannot shave a man’s hair in his absence. Every state should be able to determine what it can pay even though there could be a benchmark from the federal system. That is the angle we looked at and said all the governors should support the stand of the Federal Government because if it is signed what argument can we have for other unions that where built during the unity system of government,” Babangida pointed out.
Saying it was important for people to differentiate between constitutional and military governments, he explained that in a bid to subject the country’s constitution to test, all efforts must be made to fight for federalism to be established properly in this country.

The governors said after a presentation by the Minister of Education on the stand-off with ASUU in which they noted all the Federal Government’s positive responses to ASUU’s demands, they could not but agree that the lecturers had no reason to continue their strike.
They urged ASUU members to understand the position of government and at least suspend the strike, especially as government had despite the long period of the strike refused to invoke the no-work-no-pay rule.

Governor Ohakim said the governors agreed to go back to their states and be ready to negotiate separately with lecturers of their state universities, pointing out that the Federal Government had equally agreed to most of the demands of ASUU and had even earmarked N33 billion for upgrade of six federal universities in the first instance.

The governors equally threw their weight behind President Umaru Yar’Adua’s Petroleum Industry Bill, but however agreed to look into the issue of giving back to the host communities some certain percentage of revenue derived from petroleum exploration as raised by the South-South governors.
They also expressed support for the president’s decision to fully deregulate the petroleum sector and remove subsidies on petroleum prices which they said had gulped N150 billion between January and May this year and could gulp up to N1 trillion before the year ends.

“This year alone between January and May, the government spent about N150 billion on subsidies. The budget subsidy of over N1 trillion is more than the entire capital budget of the government and this is clearly unsustainable, and we are losing $1 billion a month of revenues from production because of crisis in the Niger Delta.

“We are spending a N1trillion in subsidies. There was a general sense that a solution has to be found and we have to find a way of resolving this and Nigerians have to understand that the subsidy is clearly unsustainable and the bulk of the subsidies are not to the benefit of the ordinary Nigerian,” the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Sanusi Lamido Sanusi who was also present at the briefing said, adding that the timing and modalities for implementing the deregulation would be worked out soon.
On the excess crude account, Governor Bukola Saraki said in line with the agreement reached on the management of the account in 2007, the council agreed on the sharing of $2 billion out of the $4.5 billion in the excess crude account.

Militants in the Niger Delta may have spurned moves by the federal government to douse the fresh tension in the region arising from the six state governors’ rejection of the proposed Petroleum Industry Reform Bill and reversal of the upgrade of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) in Effurun, Delta State.

The Presidency, in its reaction to the development, had appealed to the governors to show some understanding on the issues, saying President Umaru Yar’Adua was not pursuing a northern agenda in the Niger Delta.

The president, who spoke through his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Mr Olusegun Adeniyi, said there is a serious misunderstanding about some of the issues raised but that he was concerned and has been talking to the state governors in the region individually.

“I’m aware a meeting has already been scheduled with them even before this latest development. President Yar’Adua has tremendous respect for the people of Niger Delta, identifies with the challenges in the region and is desirous of bringing development once peace is attained. The president believes in dialogue as the governors know very well and I’m very sure the issue would be amicably resolved…,” the statement read.
On the amnesty process, Adeniyi said from the daily briefing the president has been receiving from his Honorary Adviser, Timi Alaibe, the amnesty panel chairman and Defence Minister, Gen Godwin Abbe, the process is still very much on course.

“From August 6 when the 60-day amnesty process commences officially, Nigerians will begin to see the evidence of cooperation by the militant leaders, many of whom have bought into President Yar’Adua’s agenda for peace and development in the Niger Delta.
“I want to reiterate that the only agenda President Yar’Adua has for Niger Delta is not that of ‘North’ or ‘South’ but simply to create the enabling environment for development of which he is strongly committed.”

We’ll respond forcefully - MEND
The main militant group in the region, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), in its response to Sunday Sun enquiry via electronic mail, maintained that it will “react forcefully if that move (Kaduna Petroleum College) is implemented.”
The insurgent group added that the proposed Petroleum Bill was not only an insult to the people of the region but that it also showed that the government has not learnt any lessons from the group’s attacks on oil facilities.

"No patriotic Niger Deltan will support that insulting bill. It only shows that we have not inflicted enough pain to make the government come to their senses," its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, stated while subtly berating Niger Delta leaders for their pro-North posture.
"Are they (governors) just realising that a majority of the Northerners resent our region? After years of hibernating, they are now waking up to their responsibility. The junior minister in the Petroleum Ministry must be taking so much insult but does not have the guts to resign because he has no shame.
"MEND has said it before and we thank God that what we had seen and been fighting for is now coming to light. Only a people made of fools will accept this brazen cheating. In the past, they shared the best industries and institutions among themselves but this time around we will react forcefully if that move is implemented," it said.

In an unusual solidarity with the governors, the Joint Revolutionary Council (JRC), comprising alliance units of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, The Reformed Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force & The Martyrs Brigade, had on Friday threatened to attack the petroleum college in Kaduna at the appointed time.

“These people are not ready for peace in the Niger Delta and therefore we will not give them peace! At the appointed time, we will attack the Petroleum College in Kaduna,” the JRC spokesperson, Cynthia Whyte, said in an electronic mail statement.
The group said the attempt by the Yar’Adua administration to reverse the upgrading of the PTI in Delta State to a petroleum university, which was approved by the immediate past president, Olusegun Obasanjo, was deliberately targeted at keeping the Niger Delta people perpetually down and vowed to resist the trend.
“We condemn emphatically the decision to reverse the upgrade of the Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, in preference for the National College for Petroleum Studies to be sited in the Northern Nigerian city of Kaduna. This decision is evil, wicked, condemnable and a representation of the demented quality of leadership over the contraption called Nigeria.

“The decision of the Federal Executive Council goes a long way to prove without any iota of doubt that Yar'Adua and his goons led by Rilwanu Lukman are not committed to the plight of the people of the Niger Delta. It is unbelievable that at this very sad juncture in the lives of the people of the Niger Delta, N14.5 billion would be used to set up a college of petroleum studies in a non-oil producing North while indigenes of the oil-rich Niger Delta are left to wallow in ill-equipped training facilities.
“…There is clearly an attempt by an ungrateful Northern cabal to perpetually keep the people of the Niger Delta down. We will resist and destroy these people,” Whyte stated.

The Niger Delta governors had after a meeting in Asaba late Thursday night threatened to dump the federal government amnesty granted militants who lay down arms and embrace peace.
Among the grouse of the governors is the proposed Petroleum Bill, which they described as anti-Niger Delta communities; the movement of the University of Petroleum from Effurun to Kaduna; the anti-South South posture of the Petroleum Minister, Dr Rilwan Lukman; as well as the absence of post-amnesty plan for the region.

Governors blowing hot air - Evah
Coordinator of the Ijaw Monitoring Group (IMG), Comrade Joseph Evah, however berated the governors of the region for waiting this long before taking on the federal government on its alleged anti-Niger Delta policies.
The fiery activist, who spoke on the telephone with Sunday Sun on Friday evening upon his return to the country after undergoing medical treatment abroad, said it is hard to believe the governors because of their “unholy romance” with Abuja all these years.

“They are only blowing hot air. Why are they just waking up from their slumber? After selling us (Niger Delta) to the North and the powers in Abuja, is it now they have realised the federal government does not want the development of the Niger Delta? They are cowards and I heard some of them are already denying that they took that decision,” Evah said.

ASUU Is An Obstacle To Nigeria Education

Indeed i think ASUU is just an obstacle to the development of education in Nigeria, though i know they are fighting for their rights but i still think they are doing it in a very wrong way because it is affecting the students.Imagine if a five years course turns to be a six years course,i don't want to go into stating the negative effects ASUU have caused the GREAT NIGERIAN STUDENTS because it might not even end.In conclusion ASUU should find an alternative to STRIKE.
