pleep: Wow this is sickening, I had no idea palm oil was indegenous to Nigeria. My my we had something much more valuable than crude oil.
@op how profitable do you think palm oil is, Could you just start a farm with say 50k and make money? How Long does it take the trees to grow?
Also there is one problem here, if Nigeria starts Producing millions of tons of palm oil over night the market would saturate and it wouldn't be profitable anymore. So I think this one is a missed oppertunity. It was more valuable and more sustainable for us, but we chose to rely on oil. That is truly the disgrace. Palm oil is very profitable in terms of internal trade in Africa as well as trade with other developing countries. I do not come from a family that had oil palms, but in the past, my grandfather's father was traded oil palm to the coast. But that was in the distant past. If Nigeria starts producing tons of palm oil, of course the price of it would decline. I would not price wars with Malaysia and Indonesia. This oil palm is OUR indigenous plant. And there is always internal trade. I do not see this as missed opportunity, because the world's population continues to grow. |

Why are the Aro not considered such a unique clan even though Aro culture is a hybrid of Ekoi, Ibibio/Efik and Igbo culture?
Many Aro even have Ibibio surnames. |

black.rules: How can dat be a disgrace? Atleast its always available in our markets. BTW, who tell you say na from here the seed/plant go Indonesia? The way some of you people think. . . Where do you think Indonesia got the oil palm plant from? It is not indigenous Asia, but it is to Nigeria. |

owobokiri: For you to compete with the likes of Malaysia and Indonesia , you have to be ready to seize lands from subsistent farmers and either give that to the 'collectives" or to businesses willing to invest massively in this sector. Malaysia is said to be producing over 3 million tonnes. If you have been to Malaysia, once your plane is approaching the airport, take a look out of the window. All you see for miles before the capital city proper are oceans of well planned palm fields. Where are you going to do that say in the east without starting another Umulaeri vs Aguleri?
The point is that for you to produce that much, you need huge farms. To have the huge farms , you have to confiscate lands and with the growing population in the east where palm oil is produced more and the tendency to keep lands for big country-homes over there, this wont be easy politics. If the government is not willing to re-do our land ownership sytem deu to the controversy that will follow, thereby failing to provide lands for massive palm fields, the only alternative left is to distribute fast/high yeilding fruits to village women to plant in their lands. They cherish their palm trees a lot because it is the only guarranteed source of income for many. Okpara or so did that in the 60s i guess. Palm trees dont need much nurturing/care to grow anyway. This makes a lot of sense. |

vislabraye: I really don't have much problem if Malaysia overtakes us in Oil palm production. Nigeria has so many many problems that need to be tackled. We have very fertile lands in all areas of the country. It's not just palm oil. What are you talking about? A plant that was native to Nigeria is now making another country rich. Are you not angry by that sad fact? |

Nigeria imposes curfew on Abuja nightclubs and pubs
The Nigerian authorities have imposed a curfew on nightclubs, beers parlours and cinemas in Abuja two weeks after a major bomb attack on the capital city. These establishments must now close by 2200 local time (2100 GMT) and public parks that admit children should close at 1800 local time. Eight people died in the recent attack on the police headquarters carried out by the Islamist sect Boko Haram. It is also accused of Sunday's attack on a beer garden in Maiduguri. The group, which usually targets the north-eastern state of Borno, around Maiduguri, says it is fighting for Islamic rule, and campaigns against all political and social activity associated with the West. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-13961332 |
