The Emir of Kano yesterday(20 feb. 2017) revealed that the state government is preparing a law that will make it mandatory for men seeking to marry second wives to satisfy certain conditions before they can be allowed to do so. The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) wholeheartedly supports this move. It conforms with the pronouncements of the Glorious Qur’an on marriage. It is a bold, visionary and revolutionary step. Although Islam allows a man to marry up to four wives, this permission is meant to provide security for widows and other unmarried women. It is an open secret that women outnumber men in all parts of the world. Islam therefore permits men to marry more than one wife in other to provide shelter and welfare for those women who would have been left single. In the first instance, the Qur’an enjoins those who do not have the capacity to maintain even a single wife to abstain from marriage until they can become economically strong enough. The verse says, “Let those who do not have the means for marriage keep themselves chaste until Allah gives them means out of his Grace” (Qur’an 24:33). The above verse takes care of men who are still bachelors. But another verse caters for both bachelors and married men. It allows a man who already has one wife to take a second woman, a third or even a fourth but with theproviso that such a man must have sufficient wherewithal to care for them all. The verse says inter alia, “…Marry two, three or four women of your choice. But if you fear that you will not be able to deal justly with them, marry only one...” (Qur’an 4:3). It is thus clear that, ceteris paribus, Islam actually encourages monogamy and a second wife (or third and fourth) can only come in where there is surplus provision. What the Kano State government is trying to do is to give interpretation to the phrase ‘to deal justly’ with two, three or four women. This becomes necessary in view of the fact that many Muslims abuse this window by marrying more than one wife when in reality they cannot even maintain one wife comfortably. The result is the production of children who end up as social miscreants. MURIC commends the vision and courage of the Emir of Kano as well as the forthrightness of Kano State Government for evolving this great idea. We charge other states which have Muslim majority population to emulate this policy. It is capable of reducing poverty, raising the standard of living and increasing the number of literate citizens. Abdulfatah Ahmed is just a class rep in Bukola Saraki's kleptocratic political leadership. kwara state will be 50 this year with nothing to show for its longetivity and yet our political class aren't ashamed of themselves. its a pity..... |
Kwara state will be 50 years old in May this year ln Shaa Allah. Time indeed is cruel and miserly. It ticks and gives the impression that it is standing still. Those who understood the logic of time, its essence and its inordinately desirous movement take the opportunity offered by time to do great things not only for themselves but also for their society. Such people do not lay claim to saintly but perform supererogatory actions. Chief Sunday Bolorunduro Awoniyi, Chief Aderibigbe, Chief Josiah Sunday Olawoyin, Chief S. B. Daniyan, Amuda Gobir, Ahman Patigi, Abubakar Attahiru Madaki Lafiagi and a host of others who fought for the creation of Kwara state are all great men full of energy and passion with special upbringing either by way of culture or religion and who demonstrated their commitment and desire to lead their society out of darkness to the frontiers of modernity and civilisation. They are great men, vibrant with fire in their eyes and iron in their belly. They never seek dominion over others neither was their demand for their own state driven by personal, selfish interest or greed. They desired a state of their own in that pre-modern times. A state which they and their children yet unborn can be proud to lay claim to. They maintained cohesion in their struggle and did not allow the issue of ethnic sentiments instead their commitment stirred the spirit in the people and this cemented the already existing internal cooperation which also served the founding fathers the required tonic. But there was more to their demand. There was something beyond life that was worth aiming at – and that was immortality. That was the heritage they envisioned for us because they were not the sort of human beings who go in search of miracles where hard work and intelligent strategising matters. The eventual creation of Kwara state on 27th of May, 1967, provoked expectations heightening to a level where the people felt that whatever development might accompany this birth would not only be exemplary but pace setting as most of the founding fathers formed the bulk of the technocrats that preside the affairs of Northern Nigeria. So for Kwara’s development to be holistic, integrative and redemptive there must be the need for sacrifices on the part of all and such was how the task for the building of Kwara of their dream commenced. Fifty years on, we not only pretend to appreciate the efforts of these great men but have also wickedly refused to acknowledge and recognise their heroism. Today, Kwara at 50, is about to be celebrated with fanfare by those who perhaps were not born or were still suckling from their mothers breast at the time of its creation. These are the people who preside over the affairs of Kwara today but have chosen to recreate Kwara from a state of hope to a state of hopelessness. How have we remembered these great men who laid a solid foundation for our future? No, it was not possible for us to remember them because of our treachery and wickedness. History never lies but its tellers often do. Whether we refuse to immortalise or appreciate them, Kwara’s history would remain incomplete without complete and undiluted reference to them. Besides, how many among these men have their names tagged to any popular street in the state capital? How have we immortalised these men? The familiar names we see on our streets sign posts are of those people who contributed nothing to Kwara or those who led Kwara to its present status. To further show the degree at which things have fallen, Kwara’s pioneer military governor, General David Lasisi Bamigboye who himself built on the successes of the state’s founding fathers by laying the foundation for the state’s most enduring legacies – Government House, Kwara Polytechnic, Kwara Hotel, Radio Kwara, The Herald newspaper, Midland Stores and established hospitals in each of the local council areas then, does not have one street named after him in the state capital. That our government can choose to consign all the good works of these great men into the dustbin of history not only shows how morally fractured we are but also exposed the manner our brains are wrongly and strangely wired. If there is any truism in the maxim that the youths of today are leaders of tomorrow, that maxim can never sit well in Kwara topography. Kwara’s great fortunes began to dwindle the moment the’ young boys’ took over control of Kwara’s leadership. But whether we liked it or not, Kwara government along with Senator Bukola Saraki who took the state to relegation will celebrate the states anniversary. They two would never agree that such lavish celebration lacks the urgency of now. It is indeed an occasion that calls for a sober reflection. If at 50 we are still dumb, deaf and blind too bad for us and worst for Kwara. As I write, I understand the state government has set up a 30-man committee to set the tone for the anniversary. For these gentlemen, their task had already been made simple. With nothing on ground and with all the states bequeathed legacies sold, ‘strangulated and suffocated’ to death, what is left to be showcased. They would, as it had been, chart falsehood and serve as conduit for another colossal waste. But the government will still go ahead and celebrate. Senator Saraki will join in celebrating his contribution to the failure of Kwara. Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed will also display his incompetence. He will address us both on the radio and television. He will tell us about the significance of this anniversary as if we do not know. He will also tell us about democracy and what has happened to democracy in Kwara the last 15 years. He will point to the roads that lead to nowhere and he will point to projects of his predecessor. We shall hear inspiring pronouncement as if something wonderful. Yet if one were to reach out to take hold of all he would say, it would have disappeared like mist. And he would also forget that Gossamer words cannot withstand the hard grip of reality. On the other hand, none of them would tell us why and how Kwara got to this sorry state because that is how they both want it to be. They would also not talk about the decadence in our infrastructure. They would not give us real reasons for the failure in both their education, health and agricultural policies and even the failure of good governance. They would not give answers as to why most of our bequeathed legacies in Kwara, Lagos, Abuja and other places are no more neither would they even say sorry to us for their rascality, ineptitude, wasted time and their squandering of our common patrimony. Again, both Senator Saraki and Governor Ahmed would make speeches outside of the soap box. But had such speeches and remarks been given years before their supervision of the death of our legacies, we probably would welcome such as visionary. That such speeches and remarks are going to come after the upheaval means it is given out of time and akin to the narrative of an unsuccessful player who displays his most daring moves after the game ending whistle has sounded. For those founding fathers that are either living or dead, both Senator Saraki and Governor Ahmed will only make scanty references to them. They would falsify the past but elevate the present because they would prefer these great men don’t take the shine off them. They would lay emphasis on our ‘robust cheeks’ and the treacherous smiles they have caused us all to wear. They would blame the nation’s current recession for our travails but how have we fared before now and what did they both do to relieve us. From North to South and from South to Central, a trip on the streets of these places points to something different. If one looked at the faces of people in the market, one does not see the countenance of robust growth. One is only faced with the reality of the grimace of a rolling despondence. The damage to our peoples psyche and fabric has been overwhelming. There is despair and despondency. An eerie disorientation has settled while victims applaud their victimisers in a startling display of what can be referred to as ‘powerlessness syndrome’. However we must celebrate Kwara even if there is nothing to show for our 50 years as a state. We must celebrate our survival over evil. We must celebrate the spirit that has bonded us together as one people for 50 years. We must also celebrate the gift of good health which has enabled us to experience rulers whose reign provided succour to the barren and others whose reign offered the people hard nuts to crack. Happy anniversary Kwara! In our eyes, our vision will ripen and break into a new dawn. Author: Alh Tunde Mohammed llorin, kwara state |

Traders at the Kaduna Metropolis, who had been at the mercy of a three-man robbery gang that specialized in breaking into retail shops, boutiques and electronic show rooms across Kaduna State can now sleep with their two eyes closed following the arrest of the gang members by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Special Intelligence Response Team, IRT, Vanguard gathered that the suspects, identified as Haladu Idris, Mohammed Zakari and Manniru Umaru, had in the last three years brought tears and agony on several shop owners around Constitution Road, Central Market, Ahmadu Bello Way, Sokoto Road, Abeokuta Road, Junction road and other parts of Kaduna State. But they met their waterloo recently after they broke into Chizon Plaza, a popular store at the Central Market on Ahmadu Bello Way where brand new expensive mobile phones were sold and carted away 228 pieces of assorted mobile phones, valued at N15million, on November 26, 2016. It was gathered that the owner of the Plaza, one Cyprian Obi, reported to the police at Sabongari division in Kaduna of his burgled shop and the matter was transferred to the office of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, for further investigation. The IGP then directed his operatives at the IRT led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, to trail and apprehend all the suspects involved in the matter. A source at the IRT, disclosed that the operatives through the aid of advanced technology at their disposal, tracked a user of one of the stolen mobile phones to Zamf ara State and when the user was arrested, he claimed to have bought the phone from a store in Royal Plaza. He then led the operatives to the plaza where the person who sold the phone to him was arrested and confessed to have bought the phone from a receiver of stolen goods. The receiver, who was also arrested then led the police in arresting all the robbers who broke into the Chizon Plaza. Suspects Suspects’ confession According to the source, the suspects confessed to have stolen goods worth over N20million from several shops they broke into around the Kaduna Metropolis and sold most of the goods to Yahaya Umaru, Musa Ibrahim and Bashiru Musa, at give away prices, between 2014 and 2016. They confessed to have stolen 10 English Dogs, from the owners in Banarawa and Jamaru areas of Kaduna, which they sold for N100,000 each to their buyers. They also broke into a shop on Abeokuta Road and stole cables worth over N5million as well as over 20 motorcycles. The robbers who disclosed how they operated said they used tools such as pincers and hammer to pull down the walls of the shops. They all admitted to have been remanded in prison custody on five different occasions.” Why I went into robbery—gang leader When the suspects were interviewed, 39-year old Haledu Idris from Kano state, who was described as the leader of the gang said he formed the gang 10-years ago after quitting his shoe-polishing business because he wasn’t making enough money. He said, “I have spent 13 years in Kaduna State, I was a shoe shiner. I went into stealing eight years ago and I started stealing motorcycles. I got Zakari who was my customer involved because I convinced him that we could make good money from stealing. We stole more than seven motorcycles and sold them between N40,000 and N50,000, but that amount wasn’t enough for us, I then suggested we should go into breaking of shops. Burgled shops We went to a shop on Constitution road in December 2014, where we stole all the expensive wrappers and laces in the shop and sold them for N36,000. After that we went to another shop near Kaduna State Stadium where sport wears are sold and stole all the goods in the shop. We shared the goods equally, I sold mine for N55,000 while Zakari sold his for N75,000. We also attacked a shop on Kontagora Road and took away seven brand new plastma television sets which we sold for N106,000. We also broke into another sport materials shop on Junction Road, we packed everything in the shop and shared the goods into two. I sold my own share for N41,500, while Mohammed sold his for N30,000. We then broke into a boutique on Sokoto Road and stole all the goods in the shop, we shared it equally and I sold my share for N120,500. We also went to LG Show Room on Constitution Road where we stole over 10 mobile phones and N400,000 cash from the shop. From there we went to a Samsung Show Room on the same road and made away with three laptop computers and the sum of N100,000 from the shop. We shared the cash we got from these shops equally and we sold the goods at give away prices. But at our next operation which was at a sport betting shop at Oriapata area of Kaduna, we were arrested when people heard noise from the shop as we attempted to break into it. We were taken to Magajin-Gari Police Station, from where we were charged to court and remanded in prison. We spent eight months in prison before we were granted bail. As at that time, we had more than seven different charges against us across seven courts in Kaduna State. Some courts had granted us bail while others set us free. In September 2016, we teamed up with Manniru who we met in prison and we went to Bandawa and made away with three laptops, a stabilizer, we also went to another shop on Sokoto Road, and we stole several gold jeweleries. It was at Chizon plaza on Ahmadu Bello way where we stole N228 pieces of phone and N400,000 cash. The phones were worth over 14million. After that we went to Kemsen plaza on constitution road and stole eight brand new laptops and a phone before I was arrested.” he narrated. Stolen goods sold at give-away prices—Umaru In his own confession, 27-year-old Manniru Umaru, from Kaduna North Local Government Area, who spoke English language fluently said: “I met Haladu and Zakari in prison when I was remanded for stealing seven motorcycles. We were in the same cell in the prison and when we were discussing and I narrated what led to my arrest, they told me that stealing motorcycles would not bring fast money and that I should join their gang. I left the prison before them and when they came out, they looked for me. That was in September 2016. In our first outing together, we broke into a shop at Banawa area of Kaduna and stole three plasma television sets and stabilizers which we sold for N70,000. We also robbed a shop on Sokoto Road, Kaduna where we stole 29 pieces of expensive wrappers and cloth materials, necklaces and wristwatches. I was given eight pieces of wrappers, three gold necklaces and three gold wristwatches. I sold the gold necklaces to someone for N500 each because I did not know that they were gold. I also sold one of the wrist watches for N3000, and kept one to myself while I gave out the last one to a friend as a gift. I also didn’t know that the wristwatches were gold. I sold the wrappers for N1,500 each to someone, without knowing that they were far more expensive than that. My third operation was at the Chizon Plaza at Ahmadu Bello Central Maket where we stole 228 phones. I was given 73 pieces as my share and I sold 40 pieces to one Yahaya Umar who gave me the sum of N300,000 cash. I also sold three pieces of the phones to one Ejike who paid me N42,000. I sold the rest to my gang member, Mohammed who gave me N30,000 because I needed money and I didn’t know who to sell the phones to. I was arrested after the police arrested one Musa who Mohammed sold his own share of the phones to. He took the police to my place and I was arrested. I have been to prison five times. On four occasions I was in prison for stealing motorcycles while I was remanded on the fifth occasion for beating up a woman. Each time I was arrested and taken to prison, I was usually admitted on bail and if I didn’t get bail I would be discharged later by the court”.

They have brought shame and agony through the application of their crude and godless politics which is at variance with the principles upon which our founding fathers built our great party. We must find a way to sieve things so that only men of character and integrity can come through for positions of responsibility at all levels of our political engagement in the country. How can anybody govern a people who celebrate corruption the way we do and then cry foul when the damage is done, as though they had no idea where it came from? The other day, I was in the midst of those I thought were reasonable people - a small group of lawyers, engineers and realtors or real estate guys, and as usual, the topic of conversation was our dear country Nigeria. Then someone said, "Abegi President Buhari should bring back our corruption," and to my surprise, everyone was laughing. I missed the joke, but I could swear the speaker was expressing the sentiment of the people I was with who were engulfed in a mumu laughter. Who in Nigeria wey go say him no know say corruption na 99% of our wahala? Abeg why e be say na so so mumu mumu people full dis country? How can anybody govern a people who celebrate corruption the way we do and then cry foul when the damage is done, as though they had no idea where it came from? Kai, weytin be our problem Sef! Walahitalai, even Jesus cannot govern a country wey still dey celebrate a president who presided over nothing but the wanton pilfering of its resources. And some Mumu Nigerians go dey wish make him come back to power. Na wa o. Most people for Naija dey Craze. We dey Sick. And many of us dey Mental. I am sure you must have heard/read about the former NNPC Boss, Andrew Yakubu, who typifies what is damaging the Nigerian brand. Of course there are many Yakubus in Nigeria, even in my village of Oguta. The evil in the hearts of these men and women who are mindless and mean is for sure the bedrock of our recession; unemployment; suffering; hunger and infrastructural decay as billions and trillions of our monies are often pocketed by political criminals. In the space of two years, see how much of our looted money was recouped by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari: $153 million = Diezani Allison Madueke; $15 million = Patience Jonathan; N4billion = NIMASA boss Patrick Akpobolokemi Heartbreaking N1trillion = Ex-Service chiefs N111million = INEC Staff $9.8 million & £74,000 = Andrew Yakubu 4.7bn arms fund = Obanikoro/Fayose N11.7 billion mansion built by Deziani in Banana Island, Lagos. Haba! Haba!! Haba!!! Is this a stealing competition? But Andrew Yakubu own vex me die. Look at the clandestine place that $9.8m and another £74, 000 was found! Who would have thought there was such magnitude of national treasure there? See ehn, this stunning discovery by the EFCC makes me wonder how a soulless criminal of Andrew Yakubu's ilk could have received $10million in cash as gift - as claimed by him - and how much gift would have been given to many other thieves, evil peoples and demons who had over the last decade, dotted our government. Oh... Where is my gun? I dey seriously feel like shooting somebody! In the end, common man go die by jungle justice ooo. My people, I no dey fit sleep again. I no fit comprehend how a human being go thief him generation money come go church go do thanksgiving. The supposed Man of God who is his pastor is a bastard and that church is a fraud; in fact, the God to whom they pray sef Na LIE. Nigerians must rise up and in unison fight this corruption, because if we fail today, this our suffering no go end o... and many of us go die for nothing. Our failure as a country is our fault as a people. Andrew Yakubu dey for every family for Naija. You wan get money but you no wan work. Looking for miracles in churches and mosques. If we fail to work, we can only steal to survive and that is where the change must begin - with us all. A country where people spend more time on their knees more than they do on their job will not stand; a country where the mind of the people has been buried in the erroneous mentality of getting rich only by praying; daily spiritual diet; where men of God openly fraternize with certified and indicted thieves and drool over their loot - is a country on its way to hell. My people, let us become a people who work so that we can collectively fight and fix this country. This madness of looters no go stop if our miracle-stricken mindset no change. I hear say government dey give whistleblowers 5%, good. As the President of Frustrated Nigerians, I go ginger anybody wey know any government worker or politician wey dey hide money, for this our jungle. No fear, stand up because me go fight your fight. I am willing to provide further support for those who are afraid and I am willing to stand and fight to ensure that nobody go intimidate you - whether na the looters or agencies of government wey wan dey act funny. I cannot stand back and watch my country, my Naija, my home get looted to the point of monumental destructiveness while those who are capable of helping the government recover loots for the benefit of us all are intimidated by FEAR of DEATH. All man go die nonetheless and e fit be anytime. I am prepared to lead a national revolution against corruption and in support of President Muhammadu Buhari's anti-corruption war. I will go to meet with the EFCC boss, the ICPC boss, the police boss and all those who are trying to give this country renewed hope. Very soon the voice of ordinary Nigerians will be so loud that the interest of the frustrated Nigerians will be a national priority. For decades, I have never heard thieves return so much money back to the system. And for this reason alone, I go clap small for President Muhammadu Buhari. As the President of All Frustrated Nigerians, I enjoin all of us to shine our eyes and act right so we no go take our hand decimate what is left of our land. This mindless stealing and looting is just too much. Na God go punish bad people. #OurMumuDonDo !!! Charly Boy (Areafada) |
At least 17 people have been killed in a stampede at a football stadium in the northern Angolan city of Uige, local officials say. Hundreds more were reported to have been injured when supporters stormed the gates after failing to gain entry. Some of those who fell became trapped and suffocated at the venue on Friday, a medical official said. Witnesses said the crowd trying to gain access would have taken the stadium past its 8,000 capacity. "Some people had to walk on top of other people. There were 76 casualties, of whom 17 died," Ernesto Luis, director general of the local hospital, told Reuters news agency. Five of the injured are reported to be in serious condition. Santa Rita de Cassia were due to play Libolo in a first division league match. Source:www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-38939723 |
Nigeria is a crime scene that nobody remembers. The young man says his uncle is in charge of some forthcoming lecture in Lagos in July or thereabouts and is seeking my permission to suggest my name to his uncle as the guest lecturer. Somewhere in the chit-chat, he drops a little detail. They are even thinking of approaching Senator Andy Uba to attend the event. They have not approached him but they plan to do so. Why he thought that mentioning Andy Uba would raise the profile of the lecture he is selling in my estimation is beyond me but I can make some guesses: Andy Uba is a crime scene he has forgotten. Now, this is an upright young man. I approve of him and consider him one of the folks I am privileged to mentor in the hope that there just may be enough Nigerians in his generation to pick up the pieces and rescue the doomed nation. The trouble with Nigeria is that she is a crime scene that is always forgotten because every generation is removed by time and age from the said crime scene. You are either too young to be conscious of the crime scene or as you grow older, the crime scene recedes in your memory and you don't remember. The dilemma of the crime scene is the reason why the young man mentioned Andy Uba to me so approvingly. Today, he is scandalized by Abba Kyari's corruption and is a member of the social media army that has been pillorying President Buhari for turning a blind eye to that matter. Without doubt, he would have the same attitude towards Andy Uba if he knew that there is a direct line of Villa corruption succession from Andy Uba to Abba Kyari via Tanimu Yakubu and the late Oronto Douglas. My young mentee was approaching his teenage years during the Obasanjo years. Too young to have had any consciousness of the Obasanjo crime scene. Today, he is old enough to know but we do not do history and memory in Nigeria. So, all he is aware of is the crime scene of Abba Kyari. He is unaware of the road to Abba Kyari. He does not know that Andy Uba is the beginning of that road in our Fourth Republic. It was with Andy Uba that the practice of a super-corrupt, hyper-powerful domestic Villa aide started in the short history of the Fourth Republic. The practice of converting a particular aide to a Presidential majordomo started with Andy Uba. While he was busy falsifying his educational qualifications somewhere between Canada and America, Obasanjo found him and turned him to the dominant Villa chihuahua of the day. It was said that he would sometimes be in the toilet taking notes and receiving instructions while Obasanjo pooed and he dared not cover his nose. In fact, the rise of Andy Uba as Obasanjo's chief domestic corruption poodle put paid to Femi Fani-Kayode's courageous struggle to occupy that position - a position he might have been able to occupy in a second Jonathan term absent Oronto Douglas. Andy Uba carried the day and became the personal supervisor of Obasanjo's corruption rackets - including using the Presidential jet to ferry looted cash to America ostensibly to buy tractors for Obasanjo farms. The paradigm that was set for Andy Uba by Obasanjo would guide the Yar'Adua/Tanimu Yakubu dynamic, the Jonathan/Oronto Douglas dynamic, and now the Buhari/Abba Kyari dynamic. The Buhari/Abba Kyari crime scene is enabled mainly by the fact that we have forgotten all the previous crime scenes preceding it. This problem with memory and history is why it is perfectly possible for a bright young chap who resents corruption to condemn Abba Kyari and speak approvingly of his ancestor, Andy Uba. All he knows now is that Andy Uba is a Senator of the Federal Republic. He does not know that Andy Uba is a crook plenipotentiary. Forgotten crime scenes enable crime scenes of the moment by giving the insurance of time cleansing to the current actors. Just as there is a generation of Nigerians who are unaware of Andy Uba's antecedents, the Buhari/Abba Kyari crime scene of today understands perfectly what the future holds for it if it stays the course. Ten years from now, perhaps there will be a Governor or a Senator Abba Kyari being cited approvingly by Nigerians in their early 20s. Don't forget that Andy Uba is now even a respected member of President Buhari's APC. In Delta, Okowa will fete returnee criminal, James Ibori, in a church service because a previous crime scene in Nigerian Christendom - criminal Bode George being feted in a Christian church upon his return from prison - has been forgotten. Did Bode George do thanksgiving? I'm not sure. I've forgotten. |
