Politics / VIDEO: Senate Probes Privatization Of Moribund Paper Mills In Nigeria by FARA4GA: 11:23am On Jun 10, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwbprYgKJGc

The Senate has begun a probe into all the moribund Paper Mills in Nigeria, with a view to ascertaining what went wrong with the hitherto companies that provided jobs to over 300, 000 Nigerians. The Senate said that it was worried by the recent statistics released by the Raw Material Research and Development Council (RMRDC) that Nigeria lost over N800 billion naira annually to paper importation. According to the Senate, the Printers Association of Nigeria puts the figure at $1 trillion US dollars annually through the importation of over one million metric tons of paper at the cost of $1,000 US dollars per tones.

Consequently, the Upper Chamber has mandated its Senator Theodore Orji, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abia Central led Senate Committee on Privatization to carry out a holistic investigation into the activities and operations of the Mills and report back to the Senate. The Senate has also urged the Chartered Institute of Professional Printers of Nigeria (CIPPON) and Nigeria Customs Service to review duty on the importation of published books and importation of paper as raw materials into the country and make it favorable to print locally in Nigeria.

Resolutions of the Senate yesterday were sequel to a motion titled “The need to revive the Moribund Paper Mills in Nigeria. The motion was sponsored by Senator Christopher Ekpeyong, PDP, Akwa Ibom North West, and co-sponsored by 25 Others. Presenting the motion, Senator Ekpenyong said that “The Senate: Notes that Nigeria’s three Paper Mills: Nigeria Paper Mill (NPM) Kwara State, Nigeria Newsprint Manufacturing Company (NNMC) Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria National Paper Manufacturing Company (NNPMC) Ogun State were established by the Federal Government in the 1960s and 1970s to produce Corrugated Cartons, Sack Craft Paper, Kraft Paper, Linear and Chip Board as well as fluting media to meet the country`s needs in writing and printing papers; “Further notes that these Paper Mills were privatized by Government as a result of lack of adequate funds to run them and non-performance, hence the redirection of the management into private hands through privatization to ensure effective and profitable management.”

According to him, the Senate is “Aware that paper production is one of the major industrial activities regarded as a pointer to industrialization and educational development worldwide, making the sector a major booster to our economy and national development; “Observed that the sector has gone moribund since privatization, leaving the country with another huge income deficit.

The companies who bought these mills have either abandoned them or not been able to revive them to full capacity making the country to depend on imported papers; “Recalls with nostalgia that these Mills formerly had a workforce of over 300,000 people and an investment worth over N100 billion naira before the privatization policy by the Government; “Concerned that the unhealthy state of the printing industry is adversely affecting the education sector. Statistics show that over 100 million books are required annually in the country for the 20 million students in schools and by the National Book Policy, five books are the requirement set per pupil. 75 percent of these books are printed outside the country.

This is because printers make more money printing abroad because the duty on the importation of published books is zero percent while the importation of paper, as raw materials into the country is up to 30 percent; and “Further worried that the result of the non-performance of the Paper Mills is the missed opportunity for job creation in the sector; this amounts to a loss for the Nigerian economy. If these Paper Mills are working, thousands of Nigerians would be actively employed working in these mills. Books and paper needed by students would have been cheaper since they are produced locally.”

Politics / VIDEO: NASS Member Regrets Comments On Rape Debate, Apologizes To Nigerian Women by FARA4GA: 10:03am On Jun 10, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOpk3YlmyaM

A member of the House of Representatives, Rep. Ahmed Jaha (APC-Borno), has regretted the comments he made at the Thursday’s plenary, apologising to Nigerians, especially women. Jaha, at an interview with journalists on Saturday in Abuja, recalled his comments at the debate that women should cultivate a habit of proper dressing to avoid unnecessary harassment from men who could not control themselves. The lawmaker, representing Chibok, Damboa, Gwoza Federal Constituency of Borno, said he regretted making such statement as it affected the sensitivity of women.

“I have made a mistake that has offended the sensibilities of fellow Nigerians and indeed, fellow human beings, particularly women who are our mothers, wives, sisters and daughters. “While I totally reaffirm my position that rapists should face death sentences, I regret the part that talks about the dressing of women. “I deeply apologise for this position, because as some have rightly argued, my comments, could imply that women who are victims, share the blame of being raped. “This clearly, could not have been the intention of someone who suggested death penalty for rapists,” Jaha said.

The lawmaker said that there were three sets of people who never made mistakes: “the dead, those incapacitated and those that are healthy, but useless to the society”. According to him, mistakes are for those who make efforts, but gets it wrong; it is then left to them to own up to their mistakes, take responsibility, tender apology and dedicate themselves to genuine repentance. Jaha said that a woman’s choice of dressing could not justify rape, saying that if women who were the weaker sex show discipline by looking away when men were not well dressed, men should even do better. “I know that it is a divine responsibility for every good man to protect and preserve the pride of a woman. “Most women are born with natural strength of endurance, that is why they are able to go through childbirth, to nurture families, take care of relations and still able to earn descent livelihoods.

“Women do things with completeness. I admire this so much because I have benefited from the sincerity and commitment of women. “I hold women with the highest respect, with great pride and with so much love that is pure and responsible,” the parliamentarian added. Jaha also apologised to his colleagues in the house and his constituents who might have been disappointed by his comments, especially female lawmakers. He called for the domestication of Violence Against Persons and Prohibition Act and other relevant laws against gender-based violence in the country.

Politics / VIDEO: Federal Fire Service Commissions Ten Fire Trucks Worth N1.8bn by FARA4GA: 9:43pm On Jun 09, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYsKnQlCiDk

The Federal Fire Service (FFS), yesterday commissioned ten fire fighting trucks worth one billion, eight hundred and eighty-eight million naira to enable men of the service meet the growing challenge of fire outbreak across the country.

Commissioning the fire trucks in Abuja, minister of interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola said within June to October last year, the agency has responded to 2,615 fire calls and has been able to save 754 lives and property worth one billion six hundred and twenty-six trillion naira across the country.

He said the arrival of the trucks would further consolidate and boost the growing challenge of fire outbreak in the sector and meet emergencies.

“With the deployment of the newly procured fire engines across the country, it would boost emergency response time.

The FFS is now in all states of the federation and is most responsive in saving lives and preventing humanitarian and economic disasters.

The years 2019 and 2020 witnessed frightening fires ranging from market to gas and pipeline fires around the country, therefore, these trucks and their deployments to various zones would ensure a drop in incessant fire outbreaks in the country,” he said.

Comptroller General of the Federal Fire Service, Dr Liman Ibrahim said the ten fire trucks are the some of the new modern states of the art fighting trucks and are part of twenty-one trucks approved by the federal executive council in 2018.

“It may interest you to know that the cost of these ten trucks is one billion, eight hundred and eighty-eight million naira and these trucks will enable us to further reduce emergency response time,” Liman stated.

He said President Muhammad Buhari is poised to repositioning the service for improved and effective delivery and has approved fund to address outstanding debts and payments to contractors.

The ten trucks are to be deployed to seven states; Nasarawa, Kaduna, Kwara, Oyo, Edo, Bayelsa and Anambra states. More are expected to be bought as funds are made available.

Meanwhile, the FFS has established six additional zonal commands in Bauchi, Makurdi, Kubwa, Abeokuta, Kano and Enugu to reduce response time bringing the total number of commands to twelve across Nigeria with each having a communication centre.

Also, six new fire training schools have been established in Katsina, Kwara, Osun, Abia, Borno and Cross Rivers states to cater for human and capital development needs of the service locally.

Politics / Video: Reps Probe ‘disappearance’ Of Chinese Medical Team by FARA4GA: 12:50pm On May 23, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HW351gTGcv0

The House of Representatives, on Tuesday, set up an investigation into the alleged disappearance of an eighteen-member medical team of Chinese

Nationals who were brought into the country in April by the Federal government. The Minister of Health had on the 14th of May, told journalists that the Ministry was not aware of the whereabouts of the Chinese team. The House mandated the probe of the whereabouts of the team, Tuesday, after considering a Motion brought on the floor by Rep. Dachung Bagos (PDP-Plateau).

The sponsor of the Motion recalled that on 3rd of April, 2020, the Federal Government announced that a 15-member team of medical personnel, comprising of doctors, nurses and other Medical advisers, arrived the country, along with a plane-load of additional PPE. On the 8th of April, 2020, a 15- member team of Chinese Medical Personnel arrived in the Country to share their experiences in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic and were received at the Nnamdi International airport, Abuja by some Government officials, including the Minister of Health.

“Also that the decision to bring in Chinese Medical Personnel into the Country, to help the fight against COVID-19 by Federal Government, sparked a lot of controversies from some Nigerians who kicked against the decision, saying that the Country has enough doctors and nurses, who are supposed to tackle the COVID-19 Pandemic”.

He said he was further aware that in response to the controversies, the Speaker, Rt. Hon Femi Gbajabiamila convened a meeting between the leadership of the House and Minister of Health on 7th April 2020, the Rt. Hon Speaker insisted that the Medical Team must undergo the necessary checks as provided by the NCDC and also go on 14 days Isolation before any interface with Nigerians, adding that, however “on arrival 0f the supposedly 15- member Chinese team Medical Personnel on the 8th of April, 2020, the Minister of Health in a press statement while welcoming them, told Nigerians that; first of all, what the Chineses Doctors will be doing Nigeria, is capacity building to add to the body of knowledge of Nigerian Doctors and experts have, because there is no expert who thinks he knows everything, every expert will tell you that there is more to know and there is more to learn, especially if you are hearing from those who have had past experience about it”, as he quoted the Minister as saying,
” the visit of these team is going to be very helpful to us and am sure the most curious of all persons should be our own Scientist who are having many questions and even these ladies and gentle men are are already in quarantine, I have requested that they will be able to connect With our scientists and Doctors via teleconferencing, so we can start early to be able to ask questions and hear their narratives.”

The lawmaker said he learned that “before the coming of the Chinese Medical Team into the country, COVID-19 data stood at 254 confirmed cases with 44 successfully treated by the Nigerian Medical Personnel with only 6 deaths who, reportedly had other underlining ailments. Today the data stands at about 5959 cases with 182 deaths yet the nation has heard nothing as to the contribution of the supposedly Chinese Medical Team and their supposed medical expertise”.

The expressed concerns, that the Minister of Information reported in an interview with Sahara Reporters on the 4th of May, 2020, that the Chinese Doctors have started working in Isolation Centres, helping the country in capacity building, but the Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman, Zhai Lljian, said the Medical Team was sent at the request of the Nigerian Government who had voiced welcome and gratitude to China’s help”, but added that “contrary to the statement above, the Minister of Health on the 14 of May, 2020, in a new twist reportedly told News Reporters not to bother his ministry over the whereabouts of the Chinese Medical experts who came into Nigeria to support the fight against COVID-19, while responding to questions at the daily Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, the Minister of Health said the Medical Personnel are not guests of the Federal Government but CCECC, a construction Company”.

He said he brought the Motion, following the complaints and concerned of the Nigerian citizens, to duly investigate this issues as according to him, “it is our duty as Lawmakers and as representatives of our Constituents to protect the Nigerian citizens even while respecting or interacting with foreign nationals”. RThe House adopted the Motion in its entirety, mandating the Minister of Health, to give a detailed full status report of activities of the supposed Chinese Medical Team to the Speaker, as agreed during there meeting of 7th April 2020. The House also mandated its Committees on Health Services, Interior, National Security and Intelligence and Foreign Affairs, to investigate the reports of Chinese Medical Team were about and who they really are.

Crime / Soldiers Who Kidnapped Undergraduate From Imo And Killed Him In Anambra Nabbed by FARA4GA: 3:54pm On May 22, 2020

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0AO8nkIdnuY

A soldier and other suspects have been nabbed over the kidnap and murder of Leo Micah Isiah, whose death angered people and birthed the hashtag #JusticeForLeo.

The suspects confessed to killing the 22-year-old student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, after collecting the N800,000 in his account.

It was earlier reported reported how one of the members of the gang, named Godson Chimezie, led SARS officers to the place where the body of Leo Micah Isaiah was dumped in Anambra after he was kidnapped in Imo State. Beside the victim's decaying body was the large stone he said they used to kill him.

He said they had stopped him when they saw him with his car and they accused him of being a Yahoo boy. They then led him away with his car and took his money before killing him.

The others involved in the killing have now been caught and they said they killed the undergraduate after taking the money in his account so that “our image will not be dented.”

One of the suspects, Ifeanyi Nwaiwu of the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering, Makurdi, Benue State, said he ordered Isiah’s killing after he received N200,000 as his share of the money collected from the victim.

Godson Chimezie, 28, who is a military deserter and also a member of the gang, said they ran into Isaiah while he was inflating his car tyre.

He said: “We saw him while he was pumping his tyre in Owerri and we sensed that a small boy like him driving that kind of vehicle must be a Yahoo boy. We quickly accosted him and I took his phone, went through it and discovered that he was an Internet fraudster. We immediately kidnapped him on the pretext of an arrest.

“We took him to our hideout and the young man agreed to pay N800,000. We collected the money, but Corporal Ifeanyi Nwaiwu of the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering, Makurdi, insisted that we must kill him. According to him, the man would dent his image if he walked away alive.

“I regret everything I have done. I know I deserve to die, because I have done wrong. I didn’t plan to end this way, but I only plead for mercy. We didn’t plan to kidnap him. We just ran into him.”

Parading the suspects, the state Commissioner of Police, Isaac Akinmoyede, said the gang members were arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the command.

A Nigerian man in Ekiti state, after subjecting his son to COVID-19 testing still has not allowed his son enter the house. His reason is that he is not comfortable with the test taken and cannot risk him and the remaining of his household contracting the virus. His son had disobeyed his dads advice of not traveling from Lagos; when he (the son) got to Abeokuta in Ogun state around 11pm, his father still told him to go back to Lagos state; all fell on deaf ears, which prompted the father to take the son for COVID-19 testing when he got to Ekiti state.

His son Babafemi when asked how he got to travel from Lagos to Ekiti, knowing that most of the states he was to pass through had locked their borders, did not really disclose how he did so but claimed he spent virtually 12,000 naira in total for the journey, and the buses he traveled with carried 12 passengers, meaning they weren't practicing social distancing.

Though the test came out negative, the father who is a retired road safety official still insisted that his son should be put on 14 days self isolation which is the norm; but unfortunately, he does not have such a place in his house to isolate his son.

When the sons temperature was checked again in the presence of the father, read 36.2 which the holding the interview claimed was ok, and then told Babafemi to go enter his fathers car and follow his dad home; his dad rushed to his car and zoomed off, leaving his son behind.

The Ebonyi State government has announced the use of minimal force as part of efforts to combat the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Although the state has yet to record any infection, the state governor, David Umahi, says the government is stepping up measures against the disease.

Addressing a meeting of stakeholders on Wednesday at the Government House in Abakaliki, the state capital, he disclosed that officials have been directed to beat residents coming out of their houses without wearing face masks.

He said, “Let me warn again that no face mask in Ebonyi State, no public movement.

“If you don’t have a face mask and you are out, I am directing the local government chairmen to use their men to inflict the minimum compliance which is the cane – the cane.”

Governor Umahi explained the importance of residents wearing face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the state.

According to him, the Nigerian Army authorities have highlighted the order of roadblocks to check the unnecessary influx of travellers into Ebonyi.

The governor noted that the residents have a role to play, as well as the security agencies, including the police and the Ebonyi State Neighbourhood Security Watch.

“No face mask, you will attract cane, it doesn’t matter who you are. If you are a big man and you are coming outside and you do not have a face mask, you will face trouble and the law is very clear about that,” he stressed.

Governor Umahi added, “We have also emphasised, in fact, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) has also warned that the order of blocking must be maintained.

“The police must block the first point of the border, the army must give a safe distance and then block, then the other security agencies will now block and then after that, it is now the neighbourhood watch.”

He also sought the cooperation of the youth assembly in the state with the neighbourhood watch to ensure compliance with the government’s policies against COVID-19.

Greyworld:
How I wished elections were after this pandemic... you would av seen the best of Nigeria leaders.

As in....every household would have been given 50kg of rice, 2L of vegetable oil, and 50k........APC will give theirs, and then PDP too.

What annoys me most is that Nigerians forget. Next elections, they would still troop out to vote same people. A president who went to virtually all the states during campaign is now saying its not his style to address the nation during a pandemic......ii laugh in SOWETO

This Is The Long Queue Of People Waiting To Be Fed In Lekki, Lagos, by Individuals and not he Government. The kind gesture by the privileged would go a long way to cushion the hunger effects caused by the lock down, since people who earned daily money haven't been able to go out to hustle for themselves and their family members.

It also shows that Lagosians/Nigerians can queue in an orderly manner; which would ensure that everyone is taken care of, than the normal crowded scenes we have been seeing online.

Billions have been donated to the government, with little or no impact (my own opinion) on the masses, especially in states like lagos whose unskilled labour force like the hawkers, barrow pushers, etc also pay tax and i think they should be entitled to some kickback.

How Long Can This Be Sustained? And The Govt Still Want To Extend The Lock Down.

God bless all those who have been giving (no matter how little) to those in need.
