Thousands of mystics, hippies and spiritual wanderers will descend on the ruins of Maya cities today, Friday, to celebrate a new cycle in the Maya calendar, ignoring fears in some quarters that it might instead herald the end of the world. Brightly dressed indigenous Mexican dancers whooped and invoked a serpent god near the ruins of Chichen Itza late on Thursday, while meditating westerners hoped for the start of a "golden age" of humanity. "I see it as a changing of an energy, the changing of a guard, the changing of universal consciousness," said Serg Miejylo, a 29-year-old gardener originally from Connecticut. Wearing sandals, smoking a rolled-up cigarette and sporting blonde dreadlocks, Miejylo is among those joining the festivities at Maya sites in southern Mexico and parts of Central America. But while people here were celebrating, the close of the 13th bak'tun--a period of some 400 years--in the 5,125-year-old Long Calendar of the Maya has raised fears among groups around the world that the end is nigh. A U.S. scholar once said it could be seen as a kind of "Armageddon" by the illustrious Mesoamerican culture, and over time the idea snowballed into a belief that the Maya calendar had predicted the earth's destruction. Fears of mass suicides, meteorites, huge power cuts, natural disasters, epidemics or an asteroid hurtling toward Earth have circulated on the Internet ahead of December 21. Chinese police have arrested about 1,000 people this week for spreading rumors about December 21, and authorities in Argentina restricted access to a mountain popular with UFO-spotters after rumors began spreading that a mass suicide was planned there. In Texas, video game mogul Richard Garriott de Cayeux decided to throw his most elaborate party ever at midnight - just in case the Earth did come to an end. Maya experts, scientists and even U.S. space agency NASA insist the Maya did not predict the world's end and that there is nothing to worry about. "Think of it like Y2K," said James Fitzsimmons, a Maya expert at Middlebury College in Vermont. "It's the end of one cycle and the beginning of another cycle." About 200 Nigerian immigrants in Ghana will celebrate the forthcoming Christmas and New Year day behind bars, Travels can authoritatively reveal. The majority (182) of the roughly 200 Nigerians in Ghana’s jail houses are inmates at the Medium Security Prison in Nsawam, but “a few others are in detention elsewhere across the country”, according to Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Ademola Oluwaseyi Onafowokan. The Medium Security Prison (Male and Female) in Nsawam is Ghana’s principal penitentiary. That correctional home stands roughly an hour’s drive north of Accra; on the road to Kumasi. Built roughly 50 years ago, Nsawam Prison was designed to hold less than 800 inmates. Today, however, the facility is home to over 3,500 detainees. From a visit by officials of Nigerian High Commission Accra to Nsawam Prison on Wednesday, December 12, 2012; it came to light that Nigerians account for 182 of the total 3,541 inmates at that jailhouse. The number of Nigerian convicts at Nsawam stood at 139, while 43 others are in remand there pending conclusion of their trial. A breakdown of the number of Nigerians at Nsawam Prison reveals that one of the male convicts, an indigene of Niger State, was sentenced to death in 2010; after trial for “causing the death of someone in Tamale”. Another male convict is doing life-sentence for robbery. Out of the 139 convicts, 47 were found guilty of robbery; while 14 of the 43 inmates, whose trials are ongoing, are accused of this same offence. Interestingly, one of these inmates was sentenced to 115 years for robbery. READ MORE http://www.worldnewsquare.com/2012/12/200-nigerians-will-spend-yuletide-in.html |

CAIRO — For 30 years, Egyptians simmered with anger toward Israel, frustrated that their longtime leader Hosni Mubarak wasn't aggressive enough toward their hated neighbor. But under Mubarak's successor, few in Egypt seem to be spoiling for a fight. Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, a former leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, has condemned Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip in recent days and has sent high-level delegations in support of Hamas, the Brotherhood-aligned Islamist group that rules Gaza and that Israel considers a terrorist organization. But Morsi has sought peace, not war, and few in Cairo interviewed Sunday seemed to think it should be any different. From residents of a deeply conservative Cairo neighborhood to visitors at a memorial to the last major war between Egypt and Israel, almost no one was seeking war, no matter how strongly they con demned Israel. "We are all against Israel," said Adel Mohammed, 35, a music teacher who was chaperoning a squealing school group during a visit to the October War Panorama, a large memorial to what is mythologized in Egypt as a decisive victory over Israel in a 1973 conflict also known as the Yom Kipp ur War. "But Morsi can help people in Gaza through aid or money. We don't want to be involved in a war," Mohammed said. "Egypt is not stable economically." The Egyptian government has been walking a fine line between giving as much support as possible to Hamas and Gaza without violating a 1979 peace treaty with Israel. The deal strictly limits Egypt's military presence in the Sinai Peninsula, which borders the Gaza Strip and Israel. Many Egyptians resented Mubarak for what they saw as an overly subservient attitude toward the neighboring country. During Israel's three-week military campaign against Gaza in 2008-2009, Mubarak was seen as acquiescing to it.READ MORE http://www.worldnewsquare.com/2012/11/egypt-condemns-gaza-attacks-but-most.html
