Politics / Ex-zambian President Arrested Over Nigerian Oil Deal. by fatdon1(m): 9:31am On Mar 26, 2013
Former Zambian president, Mr.
Rupiah Banda, was arrested on
Monday by the country's law
enforcement agents over
allegations of corruption and
abuse of office, following a
crude oil import deal with
Nigeria.
Banda, according to an online
news agency,
hotnaijanews.com, was also
alleged to have
misappropriated about $11m
during his three-year reign as
President of the country.
The country's authorities are
accusing him of procuring oil
which did not benefit the
country.
He was said to have imported
crude oil from Nigeria without
actual deliveries, despite the
fact that the funds were
deposited into the bank
account of his son.
Banda, who was released from
police custody and is due to
appear in court on Tuesday,
however, said the moves
against him are politically
motivated.
He was questioned for close to
three hours after his arrest
related to the oil deal Monday
before he was released on bail.
Banda denies the charges, and
his lawyers claim the arrest is
an attempt by current
President Michael Sata to
silence him.
After his release, Banda
appeared before his
supporters and told them to
remain calm, reassuring them he
would win his case in court.
Earlier this month, parliament
lifted Banda's presidential
immunity, clearing the way for
him to be prosecuted for
several corruption and abuse
of office charges.
Banda lost to President Michael
Sata in 2011 elections. The new
government has been pursuing
the corruption investigations
against the former leader and
his political allies.
Banda, born 13 February 1937,
was President of Zambia from
2008 to 2011.
During the Presidency of
Kenneth Kaunda, Banda held
important diplomatic posts and
was active in politics as a
member of the United National
Independence Party. Years
later, he was appointed as
Vice-President by President
Levy Mwanawasa in October
2006, following the latter's re-
election.
He took over Mwanawasa's
presidential responsibilities
after Mwanawasa suffered a
stroke in June 2008, and
following Mwanawasa's death
in August 2008, he became
acting President. As the
candidate of the governing
Movement for Multiparty
Democracy, he narrowly won
the October 2008 presidential
election, according to official
results.
Opposition leader Michael Sata
defeated Banda in the
September 2011 presidential
election, and Sata accordingly
succeeded Banda as President
on September 23, 2011.

Politics / Okonjo-iweala’s Mother: Police Arrest Palace Guard. by fatdon1(m): 6:22am On Mar 25, 2013
ASABA — POLICE have seized a
36-year-old palace guard
and suspected kidnap
kingpin, alleged to have
facilitated the abduction of
Prof. Kamene Okonjo, mother
of the Minister of Finance, Dr.
Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, last
December, in Ogwashi-Uku,
Delta State by kidnappers.
DeltaState Commissioner of
Police, Mr. Ikechukwu Aduba,
who confirmed the arrest of
the suspect, Chiejine, to
Vanguard, yesterday, said:
“While the police in DeltaState
were after him, the Lagos
State Police Command was
also after him for some
criminal offences, so we have
handed him over to them.”
He said the police did not
have a hand in the Okonjo-
Iweala mother kidnap until
he was arrested by the
police, last week, after a
shootout in EdoState in
connection with the death of
71-year-old Mrs. Regina Obi
after collecting N2 million
ransom from her family.
Police shot dead one of the
suspected kidnappers and
arrested four others in
separate operations in Benin
City and Ogwashi-Uku
Aduba said the suspect, who
worked in the palace as a
guard, confessed he was the
one that brought the
kidnappers to the palace to
kidnap Prof. Okonjo.
He said Chiejine’s house in
Ogbe-Ofu quarters,
Ogwashi-Uku was demolished
when it was confirmed he
was a kidnapper.
Aduba stressed the need for
people to be careful of the
kind of people they employ as
guards, saying: “This is the
problem we have now, for
practically every kidnap,
there is an inside factor.
Chiejine is very close to them
in the palace and he is the
one that brought the
kidnappers.”

Politics / Boko Haram: Northerners Still Ready To Fight For Nigeria’s Unity, Jerry Gana. by fatdon1(m): 5:49pm On Mar 24, 2013
Despite the crisis in the Northern part of
Nigeria occassioned by Boko Haram
insurgency which has threatened the
peaceful co-existence of the country, a
former Minister of Information and
Peoples DemocraticParty (PDP) chieftain,
Professor Jerry Gana yesterday, said
the region will not relent in fighting for
Nigeria’s continued unity.
Prof. Gana expressed optimism that
current acts of terrorism in parts of the
North aimed at dividing the country will
not succeed and stressed that doubts
about the country’s unity were removed
by the Civil War.
Gana, who was a Guest Speaker at the
launch of The “Victors and the
Vanquished of the Nigerian-Biafran Civil
War” written by the first military
governor of the former North Western
State, Usman Farouk, declared: “The unity
of Nigeria has been settled by the civil
war. In the north, we are still ready to
fight for the unity of this country. So, if
anybody thinks he can break the
country, the unity of the country is a
settled issue.”
He said the war also led to the creation
of more states and more universities in
the country.
“Before independence, Nigeria’s
population was about 60 million, but we
are now about 160 million and there is
strength and opportunities in high
population,” he said in his speech read by
a former Director General of the
National Institute for Policy and
Strategic Studies, Ahmed Dan Fulani.

Religion / Bishop David Oyedepo Launches Airline ”dominion Air”. by fatdon1(m): 8:44pm On Mar 23, 2013
Nigeria’s richest pastor and self-
styled bishop, David Oyedepo,
has made a glistening addition to
his business empire by floating an
airline called Dominion Air.
Oyedepo, who a few years ago
ignited debate on flamboyant
Christianity by acquiring his
fourth private jet, is the owner
of Dominion Publishing House,
Covenant University and an elite
secondary school called Faith
Academy.
Sources within the Corporate
Affairs Commission (CAC), the
agency charged with business
registration in Nigeria, confirmed
the registration of Dominion Air
with David Oyedepo as its
chairman. Another source within
a Lagos-based insurance firm
known to handle most of
Oyedepo’s businesses said the
airline project had been in the
works for six years and was only
made a reality this year.
In a swift reaction, Lawrence
Ofili, a member of the Save Nigeria
Group (SNG), “Pastor Oyedepo
by his choice of businesses has
severally demonstrated a
disconnect between himself and
hundreds of thousands of poor
Christians who he claimed to
have come to deliver. About 90
per cent of public schools in this
country were built by early
Christian missionaries; today
Oyedepo has Covenant
University but it is for children of
millionaires,” says Mr Ofili.
“Even with the high school called
Faith Academy, I am aware that
most children in his congregation
dream to be educated there but
their parents who probably pay
tithes and offerings cannot
afford the school fees. His Faith
Tabernacle accommodates
50,000 worshippers every
Sunday; how many of them are
going to fly Dominion Air?
Honestly this project is not for
the poor. He should have settled
for mechanised farming to
engage unemployed men and
women.”
Listed by Forbes as Nigeria’s
wealthiest pastor with a net
worth of $150 million, David
Oyedepo is a preacher and
founder of Living Faith Church
Worldwide, more popularly
known as Winners’ Chapel.
Besides his four private jets,
Forbes also mentioned the
preacher’s luxury homes in
London and the United States.

Politics / Igbo Group Declares 7-day-Mourning For Achebe by fatdon1(m): 5:44pm On Mar 23, 2013
The Igbo Youth Movement has declared seven days of mourning beginning from Friday for the late international novelist, Prof. Chinua Achebe, who died on Thursday.

In a statement issued on Friday, the President of IYM, Mr. Elliot Uko, said the movement was still in shock after learning of the death of Achebe.

“We wail and mourn and wish it was not true. Achebe presented traditional African society to the rest of the world 55 years ago.

“He was the man who gave the world an insight into the orderliness of pre-colonial Africa. His ideas and message translated to over 100 languages.

“Lately, he stood up for the truth in an inspiring display of courage and love for his people and respect for history.

“He was not afraid of name calling or the expected abuse. He chose the truth in order to inspire all generations. A great Iroko has fallen, IYM hereby declares seven days of mourning for the man of his people,” he said.

Politics / Sambo's Supporters Die In Autocrash. by fatdon1(m): 8:48am On Mar 23, 2013
Two supporters of Vice-President Namadi Sambo on Friday died on Airport Road in Kaduna when a bus in which they were travelling crashed.

The crash, in which some other occupants of the bus sustained varying degrees of injury, occurred around 5.30pm, few minutes after they welcomed Sambo at the airport.

The vice-president was in Kaduna for the Peoples Democratic Party’s North-West reconciliation meeting scheduled for Saturday (today).

“The supporters were among those that went to the Kaduna Airport to welcome Vice-President Namadi Sambo. Two of them died on the spot but the injured ones were taken to the 44 Army Reference Hospital,” a source said.

The dead persons were said to have been buried according to Islamic rites on Friday.

When contacted, Special Adviser to the Vice President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Umar Sani, said, “Those involved in the autocrash were supporters who came to welcome the vice-president at the airport. They are not among the vice-president convoy.”

A government official told newsmen that the state government would pick the medical bills of the injured persons.

Efforts to the reach the Director-General, Media and Public Affairs to the state governor, Ahmed Mayaike, proved abortive as calls to his phones did not connect.

Phones / Happy 7th Birthday Twitter! by fatdon1(m): 11:20am On Mar 22, 2013
Today Twitter celebrates its
seventh birthday. It was on this
day in 2006 that creator Jack
Dorsey sent out his very first
tweet and a new social network
was born. And while many similar
sites may have withered and
effectively died (think MySpace
and Bebo), Twitter has grown in
popularity, approval, and global
recognition. By their own
estimations, Twitter has over 200
million active users, with over 400
million tweets sent every single
day.
It may have attracted its fair
share of criticism from
technophobes and cynics, but all
sorts of people have recognised
the importance of joining and
engaging with the Twittersphere:
politicians, musicians, bloggers,
journalists and budding
celebrities. The potential to
reach and interact with fans is
incomparable; Justin Bieber, Lady
Gaga and Katy Perry have a
collective fan base of over 100
million followers.
But of course as with every
successful social network there
was always likely to be a number
of controversies; some of which
would have life-changing
consequences for those involved.
One such example is the Twitter
joke trial which all started in
January 2010. After discovering
that his upcoming travel plans
could be in jeopardy, 26-year-old
Paul Chambers tweeted: “Crap!
Robin Hood airport is closed.
You’ve got a week and a bit to
get your s**t together, otherwise
I’m blowing the airport sky high!!”
Mr Chambers was heavily fined
for what had essentially been a
misguided joke and it took three
separate appeals before his
conviction was finally quashed in
July 2012 – more than two-and-
a-half years after the tweet had
been sent.
A more recent example of legally-
problematic tweeting came
courtesy of Sally Bercow, former
Celebrity Big Brother contestant
and wife of the Speaker of the
House of Commons. Mrs Bercow
alluded to false claims of Lord
McAlpine’s involvement in a child
abuse scandal when she tweeted
“Why is Lord McAlpine trending?
*innocent face*” to her 56,000
followers in November 2012.
Mrs Bercow is now in the process
of being sued for libel by Lord
McAlpine. Twitter users who
retweeted the claim were
originally threatened with legal
action too, but – to the relief of
many – it seems like most of these
offenders are now off the hook.
Such misuses of Twitter seems to
be happening more and more
regularly in recent times, which is
perhaps inevitable as the
microblogging site continues to
expand. Whether it’s the
barefaced snubbing of Ryan
Giggs’ superinjuction, naming the
rape victim in the Ched Evans trial,
or sharing recent photographs
of one of the James Bulger
murderers, it seems that many
people regard Twitter as a safe
haven for flouting these legal
responsibilities.
But just because you hide behind
a computer screen it does not
excuse you from laws regarding
defamation and contempt of
court, and you’ll do yourself no
favours for behaving as though
you’re above the law. Over 650
people faced criminal charges
last year in connection with
comments that they had shared
on social network websites,
including Twitter.
Twitter has become a useful and
powerful tool over these last
seven years, and its power and
popularity continue to grow.
Although it can be used for
anything, whether it’s raising
your public profile or simply
sharing a few thoughts with
friends, the potential for misuse is
ever-present for each and every
user.
So go ahead, use Twitter’s great
features and its international
reach to your own advantage –
but remember to tweet
responsibly!

Politics / Akinnola’s Death, A Great National Loss – Jonathan. by fatdon1(m): 9:20am On Mar 22, 2013
President Goodluck Jonathan on
Thursday described the death of
High Chief Bayo Akinnola, the
traditional Prime Minister of Ondo
Kingdom, as a great national loss.
In a statement issued on
Wednesday by the special Adviser
to the President on Media and
Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati,
Jonathan said he received the
news of the death with sadness.
The President, on behalf of the
Federal Government, extended
sincere condolences to the
daughter of the deceased and
Minister of Communications
Technology, Mrs Omobola
Johnson.
He also commiserated with other
members of the Akinnola family
and the Government and People
of Ondo State.
“The President joins them in
mourning the illustrious Lisa of
Ondo Kingdom, who distinguished
himself in life as a renowned
educationist, administrator,
entrepreneur, industrialist and
leader of his people.
“President Jonathan urges Chief
Akinnola’s family, friends,
associates, dependants and
admirers to be consoled by the
knowledge that he lived a most
fulfilled life, and has left a legacy
of notable achievements in
various fields of human
endeavour,’’ Abati said.

Politics / CPC Blasts Jonathan For Fuel Subsidy Removal 24hrs After Kano Bombings. by fatdon1(m): 7:15pm On Mar 21, 2013
The Congress for Progressive Change
(CPC) has berated President Goodluck
Jonathan for insisting on total fuel
subsidy removal at a time when Nigerians
were still mourning bomb blasts victims in
Kano.
Mr Jonathan had at the Nigeria Summit in
Lagos on Tuesday, said his
administration would still remove fuel
subsidy after due consultations with
Nigerians.
He was quoted as saying, “We cannot
continue to waste resources meant for a
greater number of Nigerians to subsidise
the affluent middle class, who are the
main beneficiaries(of fuel subsidy).”
But in its reaction, the CPC described the
President as “uncaring” adding that
since he had once said he did not give a
damn, Nigerians should expect anything
from him.
The party’s National Publicity Secretary,
Mr. Rotimi Fashakin who made the party’s
position known in an interview said, “The
President does not give a damn. Even if
Nigerians masses that are already
pauperised are mangled.
“Even if the country moves into anarchy,
the President does not give a damn. Is it
not totally out of place that you have a
situation where there is no welfare
Nigerians are getting from their own
government?
“When Nigerians are still mourning over
the bombing that took place in Kano, this
government is thinking of how to further
add to their sorrow.
“That is President Jonathan in his true
element. A man that is anti-people and
does not care about what happens to
the people he claims elected him.

Politics / More Ghost Workers Uncovered In Ondo. by fatdon1(m): 10:01pm On Mar 20, 2013
Akure — CONTRARY to earlier
reports, 10,000 ghost
workers instead of 6,000,
were uncovered by Ondo
State government in the 18
local government councils of
the state.
Already, chairmen of councils
where unauthorised
recruitment of unqualified
workers or non-existing
individuals’ names were used
to defraud the local councils
are being investigated.
According to the outcome of
a staff audit committee set
up by Governor Olusegun
Mimiko, over 6,000 of them
were junior staff, while 4,000
were in the senior cadre.
It will be recalled that the
House of Assembly recently
suspended some council
chairmen in the state for
failure to carry out staff
audit.
This, according to
investigation, spurred the
state government to set up
the staff audit which later
discovered the fraud.
The staff audit also
discovered “unauthorised
recruitment of unqualified
workers or non-existing
individuals whose names were
being used to deduct salaries
from the local government
accounts on monthly basis.”
It was discovered in the
course of the audit
committee’s investigation
that the difference in nominal
roles of the local councils
between December 2008 and
December 2012 was over
10,000 staff claimed to have
been employed.
Secretary to the State
Government, Dr. Rotimi
Adelola, said the fraud, which
caused government between
N400 and N500 million naira
monthly to augment salaries
in the third tier, was
worrisome.
He said: “The names given as
workers recruited at the
time of the illegal recruitment
are fictitious being used by
the council operators to
defraud the state.
“And the few names that
could be traced are those of
school pupils and family
friends who collect salaries
for rendering no service.”

Celebrities / Kanye Wants To Name His Baby North West. by fatdon1(m): 7:44pm On Mar 20, 2013
It's reported that the
rapper wants to call his first child
North West while the reality TV
star is preparing a monochrome
nursery for the bundle of joy.
"Kanye's ego is something else, so
he's quite serious about the title,"
a source tells The Sun. "He also
has a sense of humor though and
knows how his self-indulgence is
seen by the general public. It's
half tongue-in-cheek, half what
Kanye probably feels is true."
A different source opens up to
PEOPLE about Kim's black and
white nursery plan. "Kim was
gushing about her nursery plans
while carefully selecting gifts for
her baby registry with sisters
Khloe and Kourtney at Bel Bambini
in West Hollywood," the source
claims. "She mainly looked at simple
clothing, nothing too girly."
Kim is due to give birth in early
July. The mom-to-be sparked a
pregnancy scare earlier this
month after being rushed to
hospital following a couple of
trips overseas with her baby
daddy. She quickly assured she
was fine and has been out and
about ever since.

Emirate, UAE, courtesy of the
governor. The Eket-Ibeno Road, which has
remained in a bad state for a long
time, is to be fully rehabilitated
before the next child dedication
ceremony of the couple, the governor
said. The gifts have triggered
condemnations by some Nigerians
who consider them as outrageous
and Governor Akpabio as profligate
in the management of public funds. But speaking to PREMIUM TIMES
Sunday morning, Tuface said the cars
were yet to be delivered and that he
would only decide what to do with
them after they arrived. “The governor made a promise, when
the cars come, we will decide whether
to accept them or not,” the musician
said through his spokesperson, Bola
Omisore. “We cannot take a decision
on the basis of a promise that is yet to be fulfilled.” Asked to comment on the widespread
criticism that has trailed the
presentation of the gift to Tuface
and his wife, Mr. Omisore said he and
his clients were not aware of any
criticisms over the cars. On whether it is appropriate for the
musician to accept the gift when the
funds used in buying them could be
used in solving some of the numerous
developmental challenges in Akwa
Ibom State, Mr. Omisore said, “No comment”.

Politics / Abuja Airport To Experience Power Outage From 10 A.m-10.30 P.m Sunday – FAAN. by fatdon1(m): 2:09pm On Mar 09, 2013
Electricity supply at the Nnamdi Azikiwe
International Airport, Abuja, will be
interrupted between 10 a.m. and 10.30 p.m. on
Sunday. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria
(FAAN) said in a statement that “the proposed
interruption on March 10 is to allow the
agency to improve on power supply at the
airport.’’ According to the statement signed
by the agency’s spokesman, Mr Yakubu Dati, the temporary disconnection is to enable
engineers to switch over to a new and
improved source of power supply to the
airport. “It is expected that the new source of power
supply will drastically reduce the incidents of
power outage and thereby enhance service
delivery at the airport. “The power
improvement project, which is taking place
simultaneously in major airports across the country, is designed by the Federal
Government to improve power supply to all
airports,’’ it added. (NAN)

Politics / Obasanjo; Nobody Is Bigger Than The Law, As He Collects Driver’s Licence. by fatdon1(m): 9:52am On Mar 09, 2013
Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo,
has declared that nobody is above the law in
the collective drive to ensure compliance with
traffic rules and regulations in
Nigeria.Speaking after processing his driver’s
license at the Abuja national headquarters of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC),
Obasanjo said, “If I have to drive, I must have
a valid driver’s license like others. That
informed my visit. We should note that the
driver’s licence serves other purposes beyond
driving of a vehicle and also useful outside the country such as certification of somebody’s
identity.” He added, “Anybody who wants to be law
abiding must go through this process because
you cannot be bigger than the law, no matter
your political position or social status. You
must pass through this process unless you are
not ready to be law abiding”. While commending the performance of the
FRSC in the last 25 years especially for
impacting positively on Nigerian road users,
Obasanjo called for redoubled efforts on
road safety management. He further advised
drivers to pass through the necessary certification process for acquiring the
driver’s licence in order to reduce the spate
of road crashes in the country. In his reaction, Corps Marshal and Chief
Executive of the FRSC, Osita Chidoka,
described the visit of Obasanjo to process his
driver’s license as a strong signal that Nigeria
has what it takes to be a country governed
by law.
