Politics / Lighting Of Christmas Tree By Patience Jonathan Postponed. by fatdon1(m): 2:23pm On Dec 18, 2012 |
The Lighting of the Nigerian National Christmas Tree by the Nigerian first lady, Patience Jonathan, scheduled for Tuesday, has been postponed to Saturday. The event will now hold on Saturday at the Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja. No reason was given for the postponement, but those close to the first lady's office said it may be due to the helicopter crash of Saturday that killed the governor of Kaduna State, Patrick Yakowa; and former National Security Adviser, Andrew Azazi. The Nigerian National Christmas Tree is an initiative of the Ministry of the Federal Capital Territory, and will be holding for the first time ever. Mrs. Jonathan had earlier cancelled a thanksgiving service scheduled for Sunday, following her return from Germany where she went for medical treatment. President Jonathan had also cancelled an emergency Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, meeting scheduled for Tuesday. www.m.naij.com/news/17366.html |
Politics / "Boko Haram Wants To Wipe Out Christians From The North". by fatdon1(m): 10:50am On Dec 18, 2012 |
The president of Christ Apostolic Mission Church, CAMC, Pastor Adesoji Ajayi has said that the continuous attacks on churches in the Northern part of the country was aimed at pursuing Christians out of the region. The cleric gave this observation while speaking at the ongoing church's Diamond Jubilee Convention on Sunday. He also stressed that, corruption among public office holders and politicians is fast becoming a threat to the nation's economy. His words: "Let us operate an open government by knowing the salaries and allowances of our political leaders in the three tiers of government. We are entitled to know. A lot of Nigerians will collapse if these figures are released." On insecurity, Ajayi called on relevant authorities to do more, adding that the killings in the nation must stop. "We have a very close proximity to serious hostilities and anarchy. One of the contributory factors to insecurity is the high level of joblesness in the land. "There is fire in the house and the Federal Government is trying to save the property and not the people. This approach can best be described as motion without movement. "The invincibility of the security agencies will continue to be violently violated and shattered without jobs for the masses. We need to pray to God to move us from these hard times to good times," Ajayi stated. The cleric warned that the Boko Haram menace may wipe out the entire nation if care is not take. "Activities of Boko Haram in some Northern states are meant to harass the Christians out of these states. One may, therefore, say that the fate of the Christians in the North hangs in the balance," he said. Ajayi called on the Federal Government to declare a public holiday for people to fast and pray for the success and progress of Nigeria. www.m.naij.com/news/17335.html |

Politics / Gunmen Open Fire On Worshippers In Kaduna Mosque, Kill 20. by fatdon1(m): 6:33am On Dec 15, 2012 |
Gunmen opened fire on Muslim worshippers as they were leaving a mosque in northern Nigeria on Sunday, killing at least 20 people, a local official said. The attack happened in a remote village called Dogo Dawa, in Kaduna State, said Abdullahi Muhammad, the traditional ruler and councillor of Birnin Gwari, a local government area next door to the village, Reuters reports. The police commissioner Olufemi Adenaike confirmed the incident, but did not give a death toll. Although no group has claimed responsibility for the attack, it follows a trend by extremist Boko Haram sect, which has been behind deadly attacks on churches. The attacks have claimed tens of lives and left many seriously injured and badly scarred. Suspected Boko Haram members have in recent times targeted state officials and prominent Nigerians in Islamic worship centres in some parts of Northern Nigeria, killing some as well as their security aides. In July, the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Ibn Abubakar Umar Garbai El- Kanemi, and the Borno State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Zanna Umar Mustapha, narrowly escaped being killed in a bomb last after observing Friday prayers at the Maiduguri Central Mosque. The Emir of Fika, Alhaji Mohammed Ibn Abali Idris, escaped death in August when a suicide bomber targeted him for assassination. His police orderly, however, died in the attack. www.punchng.com/news/gunmen-open-fire-on-worshippers-in-kaduna-mosque-kill-20/ |
Crime / Five Children Burnt To Death In Lagos Fire. by fatdon1(m): 6:18am On Dec 15, 2012 |
Tragedy struck Thursday night at Comfort Oboh Industrial estate , Kirikiri Town Lagos, after five children were burnt to death in a fire that engulfed a building in the area. Report said the fire was caused by a lit candle at about 10pm. Residents of the area said the transformer had a spark which threw residents of the area into darkness. Parents of the deceased, Mr and Mrs Ogbona Augustine who sell local gin around the area , reportedly lit the candle for their children while they were asleep and went back to their shop, locking the children inside. It could however not be ascertained when the fire started. But report said residents of the area were attracted by smoke that was emanating from the roof of the wooden building. But an eye witness said the alarm was raised by 11pm. One of the residents who spoke on condition of annonimity explained that “When it started, we all tried to rescue the children by doing all we could but to no avail. We contacted the fire service. But they arrived late but they could not gain access to the scene because of the tankers parked at Kirikiri. And by the time they came, it was already late”. Another eye witness claimed there was a bang on the door and the shout of help from within. “That was when we knew there were people inside. But nobody could go near because the fire had already engulfed the building. At a point, we did not hear the voices again. If the door had not been locked from outside, the children would have escaped. www.vanguardngr.com/2012/12/five-children-burnt-to-death-in-lagos-fire/ |
Sports / Guiness World Records Recognises Messi’s Goal Scoring Record. by fatdon1(m): 11:29pm On Dec 14, 2012 |
Madrid: Guinness World Records has recognised FC Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi for setting a new mark for most goals in a calendar year - 88 and counting. The 25-year-old Argentine has notched that total with two Spanish league matches left in 2012, surpassing the previous record that Germany`s Gerd Muller had held for 40 years. Guinness and FIFA issued a statement Thursday saying that Messi`s goals this year and those of Muller in 1972 are part of the official record and there should be no controversy surrounding the Argentine`s feat. he General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, on Wednesday night announced that twenty babies, including a set of twins, have been delivered since the 15th Holy Ghost Congress of the began on Monday at the church’s Redemption Camp Ground along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. He said that as at 9 p.m on Wednesday, the babies were nine boys and 11 girls. Expressing happiness over the development, the pastor said: “The girls have taken over.” He delivered a sermon on “The wonders of reversing the irreversible,” later on Wednesday, taking his bible lesson from Ezekiel 37:1-10. The clergyman urged Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of Jesus Christ as “He alone controls time and season”. “Our God has many attributes; in him, the past, the present and the future coincide.” “God makes laws to control nature and the universe; he can pick an opportunity that you think you have lost forever and bring it back to you,” he said. Adeboye, however, warned sinners not to expect the blessings of God, stressing that death awaited sinners except they repented. Crime / Woman Implants Cocaine In Her Breasts(pics) by fatdon1(m): 8:37am On Dec 14, 2012 |
MADRID (AFP) – Spanish police caught a woman smuggling more than a kilogram of cocaine hidden inside implants in her breasts, officials said Wednesday. The Panamanian woman was caught at Barcelona airport after getting off a flight from Colombia, the national police said in a statement. The woman “had two breast implants containing cocaine implanted in her. She had two open cuts under each of her breasts,” the police said, releasing a photograph of one of the loosely stitched wounds. “She intended in that way to bring more than a kilogram of the drug into Spain,” the statement added. Officials questioned the woman as part of standard checks carried out on passengers from Colombia — a major source of cocaine. When they searched her, they found bloody dressings on the wounds. They took her to hospital where doctors removed the implants and tests showed that they contained 1.3 kilograms (three pounds) of cocaine, the police said.

Politics / Senate Approves Additional N161.6 Billion For Subsidy. by fatdon1(m): 7:28pm On Dec 13, 2012 |
The amount will serve as payment for fuel subsidy to oil marketers for 2012. President Goodluck Jonathan had on Tuesday sent a letter to the National Assembly requesting approval for an additional N161.6 billion to ensure steady supply of petroleum products during the festive season. The approval followed a motion by the Deputy Senate Leader, Abdul Ningi, that the supplementary budget be given accelerated passage “in view of the emergency nature of the bill.” All the senators expressed support for the passage of the bill saying that it would alleviate the suffering of Nigerians, ensure peace and stability of the nation. Senator Smart Adeyemi faulted the national economic team for the delay in the presentation of its request for additional funds. He, however, said, “As representatives of the people, we have to support this request because it would improve the wellbeing of the masses.” In his contribution, Ayogu Eze (PDP-Enugu), hailed the Federal Government for acknowledging that there was large scale corruption in the subsidy scheme. He urged Nigerians to support the government’s effort to address the graft in the oil subsidy regime. “It is a challenge for Nigerians to decide whether to allow few individuals to continue to feed fat on our commonwealth or to stop this process that encourages corruption,” Mr Eze said. Ahmed Lawan (ANPP- Yobe) urged the Senate to henceforth scrutinise government expenditure before considering requests for supplementary appropriation. “We need to be very thorough and insist on getting relevant information in good time before we do supplementary budgets. “They talk about forensic audit but we have not seen the report. There is no evidence to show that we require N161.6 billion. “I support the passage of this bill for the sake of my people,” he said. Gbenga Ashafa (ACN- Lagos) appealed to the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream) to conclude investigation into the management of the fuel subsidy. “While I support the passage, I want this Senate to ensure that investigation into the fuel subsidy is completed because Nigerians need to know,” Mr Ashafa said. Nkechi Nwaogu (PDP-Abia), blamed opposition political parties for protesting against government’s move to totally remove the oil subsidy. According to her, the corruption being witnessed in the subsidy would have been nipped in the bud if the people have supported the attempt to scrap the subsidy. “It is not the fault of the President, or is it the fault of PDP but it’s the fault of the opposition parties which would not allow the total removal of fuel subsidy,” she said. Stop corruption or subsidy The Senate President, David Mark, decried the high level of corruption being perpetrated under the fuel subsidy scheme urging the Federal Government to stop the fuel subsidy if it was unable to stop the high level of corruption being perpetrated under the scheme. “It is not a secret anymore that there is so much corruption in the fuel subsidy industry in whatever system they are adopting. “The nation must make a decision now, whether to continue this or to stop it. The nation must make that decision sooner than later because we cannot carry on this way. “If they can’t eliminate and stop the corruption in the system, then, the other alternative will be to stop the whole exercise of the fuel subsidy. “We must take the one that is easier and the one that will bring less pain to Nigerians,” he said. Mr Mark commended the lawmakers for supporting the quick passage of the supplementary appropriation, in the interest of the masses. He said the proposal should have been forwarded in good time to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. “They should have anticipated that there was going to be a shortfall when they first made this presentation at the beginning of the year. “That did not happen. We are now shouldered with the responsibility of this additional approval. “We have done so in the best interest of this country,” he said. www.channelstv.com/home/2012/12/13/senate-approves-additional-n161-6-billion-for-subsidy/ |

See how the governor of Jigawa State is trying to defend his son. The son had 50,000 dollars on him but declared only 10,000 dollars, what was his intention for hiding 40,000 dollars. And the father is now blaming EFCC for arresting his son. The laws in Nigeria are made for the common man and not for the governors and their families. I support EFCC to charge Gov. Lamido,s son to court because nobody should be above the law. This is not a chicken republic but Federal Republic of Nigeria. |
