Politics / Outrage Greets N2.2b Presidential Banquet Hall. by fatdon1(m): 5:21am On Dec 05, 2012
Senator Bala Mohamed’s
devotion to the well being of
President Goodluck Jonathan
had in the past not been
doubted. As Minister of the
Federal Capital Territory, FCT with concurrent duty as landlord
to the president, he had rustled
not a few feathers when he
named a new layout in the
federal capital after President
Jonathan. Now, the minister is the subject
of criticisms following his avid
support support for the
construction of a new N2.2 billion
banquet hall in the presidential
villa. It is an issue that may not die soon.
The decision to go ahead with
the construction of a new
banquet hall, or party hall as
was widely reported by
newspapers last Thursday,
followed the approval of the contract by the Federal
Executive Council, FEC, the day
before. Justifying the construction of
the new hall, Senator Mohammed
had said: “We noticed that it
(existing hall) is inconveniencing;
it is not in tandem with what is
outside the country. Even smaller countries have better Banquet
Halls near their Presidential
residences.” It was an argument that has
stirred stern reactions from the
critical elements in the civil
society and some opposition
politicians. Remarkably, normally
steadfast apologists of the president belonging to the
Peoples Democratic Party, PDP
have been mute on this issue
preferring not to defend the
administration in what some
agree is a wasteful venture.

The contract is insensitive — Aturu

Human rights activist and lawyer,
Bamidele Aturu flayed the
decision of the administration
saying “It is unbelievable really
that the Federal Government
would be talking about spending such a huge amount of money on
a hall or enjoyment for owambe
kind of partying, hall at this time. I think it is quite insensitive, it
does not demonstrate that the
government wants Nigerians to
believe that the economy is not
boyant and that the government
cares about the welfare of the majority of Nigerians given the
immediate needs that Nigerians
suffer in other areas of life given
the general decay of
infrastructure, the lack of good
roads, the fact that our educational system has
collapsed and the miserable
wages that workers are paid.
And this gives a lie to the kind of
comments made by people like
CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido that they should reduce the size of
the workforce. This shows that
Sanusi lives in the moon, he does
not know the problem with our
economy, he does not know that
the problem with our economy is waste and corruption and this
kindof extravagant, reckless
spending by government. I am
expecting his own comment on
this kind of spending. So, it is wrong, it is unacceptable,
this government must listen to
Nigerians and suspend this kind
of indefensible expenditure with
immediate effect.

Govt is visionless — CPC

A situation where many Nigerians
are hungry and you are
constructing a N2.2 billion I think this government has more
or less gone out of order . I think they just wake up in the
morning and think of what to do.
They don’t seem to have any plan,
when you deal with plan less
people, visionless leaders these
are the kind of plagues that can envelop any nation.

Govt has beaten its own record in profligacy —ACN

Speaking through its national
publicity secretary, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, the Action Congress
of Nigeria, ACN said the
government has beaten its own
record in extravagance. “It is interesting that a Minister
of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
is comparing the country with
‘smaller countries’ when it comes
to justifying a project that will
only benefit a few elite. Does the Minister know that the citizens
of the so-called smaller
countries enjoy uninterrupted
electricity supply? Does he know
that the citizens of those
countries don’t have to queue up endlessly for petrol and
kerosene; that they don’t have to
depend on Okada for
transportation; and that they
have no road as terrible as
Lagos-Ibadan expressway? “In any case, nothing can justify
the decision to spend such a
huge amount of money on a
Banquet Hall in a country where
many go to bed hungry most
nights, where youth unemployment is at a high 46.5%
and where projects that could
make Nigeria to achieve the
MDGs, less than three years to
the target date, are almost non-
existent.’’

It’s a wasteful project — Sagay

Constitutional lawyer, Professor
Itse Sagay described the
proposed amount for a banquet
hall at the villa as a wasteful
project. According to him “I am shocked
because right now, the
impression we have is that the
government is short of money.
And you know there is this big
debate going on now on whether the civil service should be
reduced so that there will be
more money for development. So,
I would have thought if we have
N2.2 billion, we will use it either
for roads, hospitals, universities or other developmental projects
rather than a banquet hall. In my
view, it is a wasteful project for
now given our tight financial
circumstances.”

Politics / Subsidy Scam: FG Recovers N29bn From Suspects. by fatdon1(m): 5:07am On Dec 04, 2012
Abuja —The Federal Government
says it has recovered N29 billion
out of the N232 billion oil subsidy
scam. The Minister of Finance and
Coordinating Minister of the
Economy, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
dropped the hint in Abuja,
yesterday. Okonjo-Iweala spoke at the
ongoing Nigerian Economic
Conference. She said the amount was
recovered from some marketers
who allegedly defrauded the
Federal Government in the oil
subsidy payment scheme. The minister maintained that the
recovery exercise was part of
government determination to
fight corrupt practices in the oil
and gas sector. “Now of the N232bn that has
been put forward as fraudulent
claims, we are right now able to
hold N29 billion of that. “So instead of paying them, we
are recovering what they owe
us. So, my single hope is that out of
this, we have recovered virtually
that amount of about N29 billion
and we are looking forward to
recovering the balance of the
total. “Some of these people are being
chased and prosecuted and the
EFCC and ICPC are still
investigating this.” The minister said that about 50
marketers were being
investigated over the subsidy
scam. She attributed the slow pace of
payment of the subsidy claims to
the ongoing verification and
thorough scrutiny of such claims
by relevant agencies. Okonjo-Iweala reiterated that
only genuine claims of oil
marketers would be entertained. “We have never stopped paying
because all these issues about
queues and so on, of course
sometimes the marketers have
said unless you pay us, we are
not going to bring in oil. “But we have not yielded to any
of that kind of stress or even
blackmail, we have continued to
do our work and we will continue
to pay those who are clean,” she
said.

LONDON (AP) — Get the nursery ready: Prince William and his wife Kate are expecting their first child.

St. James's Palace announced the pregnancy Monday, saying that the Duchess of Cambridge — formerly known as Kate Middleton — has a severe form of morning sickness and is currently in a London hospital. William is at his wife's side.

The palace said since the pregnancy is in its "very early stages," the 30-year-old duchess is expected to stay in the hospital for several days and will require a period of rest afterward.

It would not say how far along she is, only that she has not yet reached the 12-week mark.

News of the pregnancy drew congratulations from across the world, with the hashtag "royalbaby" trending globally on Twitter.

Not only are the attractive young couple popular — with William's easy common touch reminding many of his mother, the late Princess Diana — but their child is expected to play an important role in British national life for decades to come.

William is second in line to the throne after his father, Prince Charles, so the couple's first child would normally eventually become a monarch.

In recent days, Middleton has kept up her royal appearances — recently playing field hockey with schoolchildren at her former school.

The confirmation of her pregnancy caps a jam-packed year of highs and lows for the young royals, who were married in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey last year.

They have traveled the world extensively as part of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee celebrations and weathered the embarrassment of a nude photos scandal, after a tabloid published topless images of the duchess.

Joe Little, managing editor of Majesty magazine, said the news bookended a year that saw the royal family riding high in popular esteem after celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II's 60 years on the throne.

"We're riding on a royal high at the moment at the end of the Diamond Jubilee year," he said. "People enjoyed the royal romance last year and now there's this. It's just a good news story amid all the doom and gloom."

Speculation about when the couple would start a family has been rife since their wedding.

Religion / Pope Comes On Twitter @pontifex by fatdon1(m): 4:25pm On Dec 03, 2012
He already has 1.2 billion “followers” in the
standard sense of the word but next week he
will have another type when he enters what
for any 85-year old is the brave new world of
Twitter. The Vatican said on Monday that the pope will
start tweeting on December 12, the feast of
the Madonna of Guadalupe. “The handle is a good one. It means ‘pope’ and
it also means ‘bridge builder’,” said Greg Burke,
senior media advisor to the Vatican. “The pope wants to reach out to everyone,”
he told a news conference. The first papal tweets will be answers to
questions sent to #askpontifex. The tweets will be going out in Spanish, English,
Italian, Portuguese, German, Polish, Arabic and
French. Other languages will be added in the
future. “We are going to get a spiritual message. The
pope is not going to be walking around with a
Blackberry or an iPad and no one is going to be putting words into the pope’s mouth. He
will tweet what he wants to tweet,” Burke
said. Primarily the tweets will come from the
contents of his weekly general audience,
Sunday blessings and homilies on major Church
holidays. They will also include reaction to
major world events, such as natural disasters. Benedict will be sending his first tweet himself
on December 12 but in the future most will be
written by aides and he will sign off on them
before they are sent in his name. But while the pope will be one of the world’s
most high-profile tweeters and have many
followers, he will not be following anyone
himself. The pope’s Twitter page is designed in yellow
and white – the colors of the Vatican, with a
backdrop of the Vatican and his picture. It
may change during different liturgical
seasons of the year and when the pope is
away from the Vatican on trips.

FEAR OF HACKING

The Vatican said precautions had been taken
to make sure the pope’s certified account is
not hacked. Only one computer in the
Vatican’s secretariat of state will be used for
the tweets. “The Pope’s presence on Twitter is a concrete
expression of his conviction that the Church
must be present in the digital arena,” the
Vatican said. “This initiative is best understood in the
context of his reflections on the importance
of the cultural space that has been brought
into being by the new technologies … the
pope’s presence on Twitter can be seen as
the ‘tip of the iceberg’ that is the Church’s presence in the world of new media,” it said in
a statement. The pope, who still writes his speeches and
books by hand, has given a qualified blessing
to social networking. In a document issued last year, he said the
possibilities of new media and social networks
offered “a great opportunity”, but warned of
the risks of depersonalization, alienation, self-
indulgence, and the dangers of having more
virtual friends than real ones. In 2009, a new Vatican website,
www.pope2you.net, went live, offering an
application called “The pope meets you on
Facebook”, and another allowing the faithful
to see the pontiff’s speeches and messages on
their iPhones or iPods. The Vatican famously got egg on its face in
2009 when it was forced to admit that, if it
had surfed the web more, it might have known
that a traditionalist bishop whose
excommunication was lifted had for years
been a Holocaust denier.

Politics / BREAKING News;boko Haram Leader Killed In Nigeria. by fatdon1(m): 10:54am On Dec 03, 2012
(AGI) - Abuja, Dec. 3 - A top Boko
Haram leader has been killed after a
weekend of violence against
Christians in the north of Nigeria,
military officials said on Monday. A
spokesperson of the army in the northwestern Borno State, Sagir Mus,
reported that Abdulkareem Ibrahim, a
Boko Haram commander and one of
the 19 most dangerous terrorists, had
been killed. Arms and "other explosive
materials were also recovered during the raid that led to death of another
two sub-commanders close to Al
Qaeda.
The raid came after 10 Christians
were killed in an overnight machete
attack in a largely Christian village. Fifty terrorists also attacked
another village close to the Chad
border, killing two policemen and
setting two churches on fire. More
than 3,000 people have been killed in
the conflict between Boko Haram and the government forces since 2010.
President Goodluck Jonathan said on
Sunday that he wanted to reassure
Nigerians that their country is sound
and safe, despite the alarming news.

Politics / We Won’t Sack Civil Servants, Says FG. by fatdon1(m): 5:00am On Nov 30, 2012
ILORIN—Following the heat
generated by the call of the
Governor of Central Bank of
Nigeria, CBN, Mallam Lamido Sanusi on the Federal
Government to sack half of its
workforce, the Minister of
Labour and Productivity, Chief
Chukwuemeka Wogu, yesterday,
assured that no worker would lose his job as the government
was even desirous of creating
more jobs for Nigerians. Sanusi in a paper he presented at
the 2nd Annual Capital Market
Committee Retreat in Warri, Delta
State, had stressed the need to
prune membership of the
National Assembly as well as the number of states and local
governments in the country,
among others.
The Labour Minister who spoke
in Ilorin at the 8th National
Labour Relations Summit and
Fellowship Award held at the
Michael Imodu National Institute
for Labour Studies(MINILS), said rather than sack workers, the
government has already set up
job creation committee that
would commence work next week
on how to create more jobs in all
sectors of the economy to achieve more success on the
transformational agenda of the
President Goodluck Jonathan
administration. According to him, “no worker will
be sacked. Nobody should be
afraid, the government is
desirous of creating more jobs
for Nigerians”. He noted that,”though job
creation is more of private
sector activities, but the federal
government has created an
enabling environment for private
sector to thrive. The government has also made a special effort on
agriculture, power, ICT, tourism
and recently SURE-P programme
of the government in its efforts
to provide jobs for Nigerians”. Sanusi, economist of political turbulence — Reps Meanwhile, members of the House
of Representatives, yesterday,
hit back at Sanusi, describing him
as an economist of political
turbulence over his call for a 50
per cent cut in the nation’s civil service. Reacting to the issues raised by
the CBN boss at a press briefing,
Deputy Chairman of the House of
Representatives Committee on
Media and Public Affairs, Mr
Victor Ogene described Sanusi as “an economist with a bias for
creating political turbulence,”
who had also not succeeded in
pushing through, any of his
controversial policies. The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi
Okonjo-Iweala was also not
spared over her ministry’s
inability to cash-back the
balance of N300 billion of the
capital allocation in the 2012 budget to government Ministries,
Departments and Agencies (MDAs)
one month after promising to do
so. He said he did not know Sanusi to
be a political economist, adding
that “the Nigerian Labour
Congress (NLC) had succinctly
replied the CBN Governor over
the controversial comments”. He explained that “it was ironical
for him to make such
recommendations when there
have been astronomical increase
in the workforce of the CBN since
he assumed office. For me, I will say physician heal thyself,” the
lawmaker noted. He stressed that “checks had
revealed that before Sanusi was
appointed CBN Governor, its
workforce was 5,022 but had
risen to 6,015 since he assumed
office”, adding that there have been reported cases of acrimony
in the bank due to unfair
promotion of personnel during
his tenure. He argued that the CBN had an
annual expenditure profile of
about N300 billion and that
Sanusi had never deemed it fit to
subject such to public scrutiny
as a mark of accountability. “What solution has he proffered
as an economist? How can he
recommend a 50 per cent
reduction in the civil service when
we are talking of rising
unemployment and high level of insecurity? As an economist, I
think he should proffer
something that would grow the
economy instead,” the lawmaker
added. While expressing optimism that
the 2013 budget would be
passed before the House
proceeds on Christmas recess,
Ogene disclosed that it was,
however, still worried over the releases of capital funds to the
MDAs. He said the practice of
“anticipatory releases” was not
acceptable to the House, as much
can still be done before the year
ends if the fourth quarter
releases were cash-backed early enough. Facts available were that only
about 75 per cent of N1.3 trillion
Capital component of the 2012
Appropriation had been
accessed by MDAs, just with a
month to the end of the year”. LCCI, others react Reacting to Sanusi’s comment, the
Regional Managing Partner for
West Africa, Ernst &Young (EY),
Mr. Henry Egbiki, said: All I can say
is that government can reduce
recurrent expenditure through blocking of leakages.” Director General, Lagos Chamber
of Commerce and Industry
(LCCI), Muda Yusuf said: “The
chamber is not in support of the
Sanusi’s call to cut government
work force by half, and that will be too drastic an action to take.
The social implication will be
profound. But the principle of
cutting down on cost of
governance is good. Personnel
cost is only one of the many components of this cost. The
approach should therefore be
holistic.” In his reaction, Managing
Director of Linkage Assurance
Plc, Mr. Gus Wiggle said: “A
situation whereby state
governments use up about 70 per
cent of their state allocation to pay salaries of civil servants, is
not ideal, however, the economy
of the country is not strong
enough to withstand the sack of
about 50 per cent of the
workforce.”

Highly controversial Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh who recently had a messy fight with star actress Mercy Johnson has confirmed the rift.

Tonto Dike who claims Mercy Johnson is not just her type said she had let go of everything that transpired between them.

In a recent interview, when puzzled on why she chose not to attend Mercy Johnson’s wedding, here is what the actress said:

“That’s not the reason I didn’t attend her wedding, it’s surprising, why people think you just have to be everybody’s friend.

In the industry,I don’t know half of the producers and I work for them,I don’t even know half of my colleagues but I work with them.

I kiss and hug them on set.We flow,we enjoy the friendship on set based on the energy and connection that exists between myself and the next person on set but that does not mean we are friends in the real sense of it. You can’t just be a friend to everybody, it’s a normal thing. Mercy Johnson is not just my friend”.

When asked about a serious fight she allegedly had with Mercy Johnson, here is what the actress said:

“Even if I had,I had let go everything. It doesn’t really matter to me anymore. Everybody is doing well,It’s just because we are not close,we only did about two or three movies together. We have never been close friends.”

Photograph: Laurence Griffiths/

a source close to the Brazilian
Football Confederation (CBF) said on
Wednesday. Scolari, who led Brazil to their last
World Cup in 2002 and was favourite
for the job, will replace Mano
Menezes who was sacked last Friday. The CBF president, José Maria Marin,
confirmed he had chosen a new coach
but declined to give a name. "We did a thorough evaluation and
what we need is someone with the
right skills, dedication and
experience," Marin said. "I am
absolutely certain that the fans will
be happy with our choice. "Pressure will be great at the World
Cup, and that's understandable, and
we need someone who can cope with
that. We need everyone to get behind
the new coach." Marin had previously said the coach
would be named in January but
decided it would be better to make
the decision before Saturday's draw
in Saõ Paulo for next year's
Confederations Cup, which Brazil also hosts. "This shows that there is no crisis,
that everything is under control," he
said. Brazil will be hoping to win their
sixth world title in 2014. Scolari also coached Portugal at Euro
2004 and 2008, and at the 2006 World

announcement, the national teams
director, Andrés Sánchez, announced
his resignation. Sánchez had been
opposed to the sacking of Menezes.

Phones / New Internet-connected Camera Launched. by fatdon1(m): 8:35am On Nov 29, 2012
The "Galaxy" camera, named after the
Korean firm's signature smartphone
and tablet PC series, enables users to
upload photos and videos directly to
the Internet without having to hook
it up to a computer. The camera, launched earlier this year
in countries in Europe, North America
and elsewhere in Asia, is not Samsung's
first Internet-connected camera. But the latest device -- powered by
Google's Android software like many
key Samsung gadgets including
Galaxy S smartphones or Galaxy Tab
tablets -- operates more like a
smartphone, the company said. It allows users to download apps
aimed at polishing photos or videos,
automatically share images stored in
the camera with certain mobile
devices located nearby, or to have
the images automatically stored in a cloud-computing server. Users have to subscribe to wireless
plans to use the gadget, featuring a
4.8-inch LCD touchscreen, a 21x
optical lens and priced at about
750,000 won ($691) on the domestic
market. "The Galaxy Camera will open a new
chapter of communications -- visual
communications," JK Shin, chief of
Samsung's mobile unit, said in a
statement. Samsung -- the world's top maker of
smartphones and memory chips -- has
recently been trying to strengthen its
relatively small presence in the global
digital camera industry dominated by
Japanese giants like Nikon and Canon. (AFP)

as well as Europe. The kind of ground
that these patents will cover include
a range of technologies from
“calendar-display apparatus, and
associated method, for a mobile terminal” to “method of operating a
navigation system using images” and
“communication network terminal supporting a plurality of
applications”. A quartet of court hearings, which
will include three full trials, have been
scheduled to hear Nokia’s case
against HTC before 2012 is over –
meaning there are just a six more
weeks or so before everything is done in the courtroom. Foss
intellectual property analyst, Florian
Mueller, claims that the Taiwanese
manufacturer might be backed into a
corner here, saying, “Based on how
both parties fared against Apple, it’s easy to see that Nokia will win this
and will most likely receive a higher
per-unit royalty from HTC than Apple
receives from HTC.” Could we be
looking at a huge payday for Nokia
this time around?

Politics / Jonathan Hails Gen. Abubakar For Rescuing Nigeria. by fatdon1(m): 6:56pm On Nov 14, 2012
ABUJA - President Goodluck
Jonathan Wednesday said that
former Head of State, General
Abdulsalami Abubakar rescued
the nation at a time when its corporate existence was under
threat.
President Jonathan who made
the remarks in Abuja during the
presentation of a book, the “time
and legacy’ of former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Alhaji
Abubakar, the liberal and
solution to stable democracy in
Nigeria”, said General Abubakar
became the Head of State at
such a turbulent time in our nation history.
The book written by Abdullahi
Modibo Umar was forwarded by
the former President of Nigeria,
Alhaji Aliyu Shehu Shagari.
Commending the efforts of the
former military ruler at resolving the political crisis that engulfed
the country at that time, Dr.
Jonathan noted however that,
under the administration of
General Abubakar, democracy
was restored and the polity was sanitize.
President Jonathan who was
represented by Vice President,
Arch. Namadi Sambo said the
administration of General
Abubakar helped to place Nigeria in the enviable position in the
comity of democratic nations.
In his remarks, the Chairman of
the occasion and former Military
President, General Ibrahim
Badamosi Babangida commended the courage of General
Abubakar who he said
successively steered the ship of
the nation to stability.
Describing him as a nation builder
and detribalised Nigerian leader, General Babangida praised the
former Head of State for
restoring peace in Nigeria at
that time.
According to Jonathan, “General
Abdulsalami Abubakar became the Head of State at such a
turbulent time in our nation
history and when the corporate
existence of our nation was
under threat.
“On assumption of office, General Abdulsalami Abubakar
did not only restore confidence
in our body polity, but helped in
rejuvenating political activities
which serve as catalogue to
foster consensus building among stakeholders in the Nigerian
project, thereby placing Nigeria
in the enviable position in the
comity of democratic nations.
“His conduct of the 1999 general
elections helped to usher in a democratic process which is
gradually maturing by the day.
He among others, allowed the
independent of the electoral
empire, created an enabling
environment for political parties to evolve through genuine
participation, robust political
belief and principles.
“This really places the cynics at
their proper place, who
postulated that no successive transition could ever be achieved
in Nigeria. Having successively
issued a successive transition
and enthroned a successful
government, he brought into light
our 1999 constitution through the promulgation of a Decree to
that effect.
“Before going out of office, he
ensured that he granted
amnesty to state offenders and
pardoned those who are considered as enemies of state.
This act further helped to
catapult our rising to a
progressing and responsible
democracy.
“He finally handed over to General Olusegun Obasanjo as
the President and Commander in-
Chief of the Armed Forces of the
Federal Republic of Nigeria on
the 29 of May 1999.
“Abdulsalami has earned for himself a reputation as a lover,
builder, friend and champion of
democracy in Nigeria. Little
wonder, his membership of
several international
negotiation, mediation, peace and conflict resolution
committees”, he said.
