No fewer than 16 persons were on Thursday
killed in both Damaturu and Potiskum, Yobe
state as suspected sect member continued
the destruction of telecommunication masts in
Northern Nigeria, a source at the General Sani
Abacha Specialist Hospital said. The Damaturu destruction is coming just 24
hours after same operation was carried out
by hoodlums in Maiduguri and Kano. The destruction of the facilities was
accompanied by killings and burning of some
structures in the restive Damaturu and
Potiskum in Yobe state North East Nigeria. The state commissioner of police, Patrick
Egbuniwe who confirmed the destruction said
the coordinated attack started around 8pm
through the night as five persons lost their
lives during the attack but hospital sources
claimed 16 corpses were brought to the hospital for claims by relations. The commissioner said the masts of Etisalat,
Globacom and Airtel in the two towns were
burnt by suspected armed hoodlums believed
to be members of the Boko Haram Islamic sect,
by launching Improvised Explosive Devices
(IEDs) and petrol-bombs at the masts. He said that seven masts were destroyed in
Damaturu while Potiskum loss Five. Mr Egbuniwe said the attackers also razed
down the offices of Yobe state Ministry of
Religious Affairs, the state Pilgrims Welfare
Board, Hajj Camp, Local Government INEC
Office and most of the structures at the
Government Secondary School Damaturu believe to be the most populated public school
in the state capital. He said one of the Fire fighting vehicles of the
state fire service was also burnt by the
assailants. Four arrested The Joint Taskforce (JTF) in the state
confirmed that four suspects have been
arrested and are being interrogated in
connection with the recent attacks. The suspects according to the JTF were
arrested along Gujba road in an attempt to
lunch another attack on a mast along the
road. The coordinated destruction of
telecommunication facilities is the first to be
carried out in the state since the
commencement of the insurgency. Thursday’s vandalisation disrupted smooth
communication within and outside the state
capital as the only surviving network the MTN
was erratic throughout the day.

The 78th birthday celebration of
business magnate and father of
Lucky Igbindeion, former governor of

dimension on Wednesday, as one of the vehicles in his entourage plunged
into the Ovia River, killing the four
occupants instantly. The casualties whose identities could
not be ascertained at press time
were said to be lecturers of
Igbinedion University, Okada, who
travelled with Chief Igbinedion, the
Esama of Benin Kingdom, who earlier in the day launched his Benin-based
Independent Television into satellite
for viewing in 104 countries. The carnival-like train had left for
the country-home of Igbinedion,
Okada, after the launching at the
television station where another
celebration took place, after which
they returned to Benin City. Disaster struck when the driver of
one of the cars, an Audi 80, in the
convoy conveying the four lecturers
lost control and plunged into the Ovia
River, along the Benin-Ore Road, killing
all the occupants. Three years ago, during his 75th
birthday celebration, one of his staff
died in an accident, while running an
errand for the Benin high chief. Also last year, Omoregbe Okpenye
(aka Bayo Ade), a musician who was
entertaining his guests at his palatial
residence in Benin during his 77th
birthday celebration was suddenly
kidnapped by unidentified gunmen and later killed.

Jonathan visits Eagles during training at the
National stadium President Goodluck Jonathan during his visit to the National stadium in Abuja on Wednesday urged the Super Eagles to work towards success in their game in Moronvia on Saturday. The National Team are billed to play against
the Leone Stars of Liberia in a qualifying
match for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in
South Africa. They are currently undergoing training at the
National Stadium in Abuja. Jonathan encouraged the players to work
hard to ensure they do well in the match and
disclosed that he had already set up a special
committee at the Federal Executive Council
meeting earlier in the day to look at how the
lost glory of the nation’s sports could be restored. While calling for a re-enactment of the
Atlanta 1996 Olympic Games where Nigeria
won the football event, Jonathan said he
believed that Nigeria could still win gold in
that category and others at subsequent
Olympics. The President expressed his displeasure over
the poor state of the stadium which was
overgrown with weeds at the time of his visit. He therefore ordered the management of the

Police Re-arraign Banker Over Death Of LASTMA Official

The Police on Wednesday re-arraigned Yinka Johnson, a banker in Lagos, who was earlier accused of killing an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, (LASMA), Hameed Balogun, before an Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on a one count of reckless driving.

At the resumed hearing of the case, Police prosecutor, Chukwu Agwu, applied to the court to withdraw the earlier charge of manslaughter and substituted it with the new one.

The old charge which was drafted on the old Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2003 was replaced with the new Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2012.

The new charge read, “That you Yinka Johnson ‘on August 10, at about 8:30am at Mega Chicken, Ikota Ajah expressway Lekki, Lagos did drive your Land Rover Jeep with registration No- CY 276 LSD on the highway recklessly by driving your vehicle against oncoming vehicle and without reasonable consideration for other road users and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 7(b) of the Lagos State Road Traffic Law 2012.”

The accused however pleaded not guilty to the new charge.

Attempts by the lawyer of the accused, Emeka Okpoko to argue that his client cannot be charged under the new traffic law as it is yet to be enforced proved abortive.

Mr Okpoko argued that various publications in some newspapers gave the impression that the law was yet to take effect as government planned to carry out public enlightenment on the said law before implementing it.

The trial Magistrate, Jacob Adegun ruled that the Prosecution has the right to substitute the charge under the law.

After the arraignment, the police prosecutor informed the court that Lagos State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has called for the case file and urged the court to adjourn the matter until the DPP gives further directive on the matter.

The accused person was however, granted bail on the earlier conditions while the Magistrate has adjourned the case till 28 September for mention.

The court had earlier granted bail to Mrs Johnson in the sum N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

Mrs Johnson, an employee of Stanbic IBTC, drove a Range Rover Jeep against traffic at Mega City, Ikota, along Lekki-Epe Expressway and was accosted by a LASTMA official who allegedly seized the keys of the vehicle.

Eye witnesses reportedly said while the traffic official attempted to cross to the other side of the road, he was crushed by a fast moving commercial bus.

Grief and sorrow enveloped
yesterday Umuakuru village in
Emekuku, Owerri North Local
Government Area of Imo State
following the mysterious death of
nine members of a family whose
bodies were discovered in their
rooms early hours of the day.
The family had buried their 98-
year-old mother, Mrs Felicia Njoku
on Saturday, July 7 in their
country home.
The deceased include Mr. Pascal
Njoku, his wife Juliana and their
five children, Ebere (first
daughter), Ifunanya (second
daughter), Chibueze (son) Jackline
(third daughter) and Uchechi (last
daughter).
Others, who also died along with
the Njokus, were Mr. Njoku’s
sister, Christina Uba (nee Njoku)
and her friend Catherine who
accompanied her to the burial.
A family relation who pleaded
anonymity told Daily Sun that
with the burial of their mother
over and attendant funeral
activities completed, the
embattled family retired to bed
late in the night but could not
wake up the following day.
However, fingers were being
pointed at a member of the
family whom the source said had
earlier threatened to deal with the
late Njoku and his family over a
lingering family problem. Not
prepared to take chances over
the threat, Njoku’s wife, Juliana
reportedly compelled him to
relocate herself and their children
for safety, but her advice was
ignored.
When Daily Sun visited the
deceased’s residence, their
corpses were yet to be taken to
the mortuary as armed police and
soldiers cordoned off the area to
prevent possible breakdown of
law and order as the youths from
the area were sporting for action.
An elderly man from the village
told Daily Sun that the corpses
would not be removed from the
compound until certain rituals
were performed to appease the
gods of the land.
“We have never witnessed this
kind of tragedy in our village. I
am 90 years of age, this type of
calamity had not happened
before and something serious
must be done to appease the
gods.” Another source told Daily
Sun that a pastor, who visited the
family last Wednesday before the
burial, suffered a spiritual attack
and was unable to continue the
prayer session.
A woman, who narrated her
ordeal to Daily Sun also, said a
day to the burial she defeacated
in her dress unknowingly and
was rushed to the hospital.
Suspicion of the victims’ death
from fumes of generating set
was dismissed by eyewitness,
who said the family had none.
