International Friendly - Colombia Dump Eagles for Bafana Bafana Nigeria’s preparations for the World Cup in June have suffered yet another snag after a proposed friendly against Colombia in London was called off at the instance of the South Americans. Last week, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) signed their own part of the contract to tackle Colombia in London today (May 26,) only for into an agreement to take on World Cup hosts South Africa on the same day. Colombia to enter The Super Eagles preparations for South Africa 2010 first suffered a setback last week when Ukraine disclosed that they are unaware of any arrangement to tackle Nigeria in another World Cup warm-up in London. Officials informed MTNFootball.com that Colombia had requested they play against the Eagles on May 29 also in London, but unfortunately that would also be the same day they are scheduled to clash with World Cup-bound North Korea. Officials are now shopping to replace Colombia with either Finland or Cyprus. Earlier this month, shoddy arrangements forced a friendly against Paraguay in London to be called off, leaving Nigeria to hurriedly call up DR Congo to take on the country's B team, sprinkled with a handful of foreign pros, in Abuja. http://thisdayonline.com/nview.php?id=169495 |
IPhone App to Sidestep AT&T For a little $1 iPhone app, Line2 sure has the potential to shake up an entire industry. It can save you money. It can make calls where AT&T's (T) signal is weak, like indoors. It can turn an iPod Touch into a full-blown cellphone. And it can ruin the sleep of cellphone executives everywhere. Line2 gives your iPhone a second phone number -- a second phone line, complete with its own contacts list, voice mail, and so on. The company behind it, Toktumi (get it?), imagines that you'll distribute the Line2 number to business contacts, and your regular iPhone number to friends and family. Your second line can be an 800 number, if you wish, or you can transfer an existing number. To that end, Toktumi offers, on its Web site, a raft of Google (GOOG) Voice-ish features that are intended to help a small businesses look bigger: call screening, Do Not Disturb hours and voice mail messages sent to you as e-mail. You can create an "automated attendant" -- "Press 1 for sales," "Press 2 for accounting," and so on -- that routes incoming calls to other phone numbers. Or, if you're pretending to be a bigger business than you are, route them all to yourself. http://finance.yahoo.com/family-home/article/109173/iphone-app-to-sidestep-att http://www.line2.com/ |
THE YOUNG GENERATION It has been a week of encouraging news inside the Chelsea Academy. One Youth Cup Final, one debutant, one returning defender, one departing on loan and one exciting trip ahead, Not only did we reach another FA Youth Cup Final with a free-flowing display at Stamford Bridge, but at reserve team level there was the much anticipated return to action of highly rated defender Sam Hutchinson, and a first team debut for left-back Patrick van Aanholt. Meanwhile Ben Gordon has joined Tranmere Rovers on loan until April 24, his first temporary move since arriving at Stamford Bridge in 2007. Dutchman Van Aanholt, 19, came on as a second-half sub in the 5-0 win at Portsmouth on Wednesday night, and was understandably delighted to have made his bow. 'I am buzzing, I had a great night last night and I was really happy to make my debut,' he said this morning. 'I am trying to get more involved in the first team and hope to be able to play a couple more times before the end of the season as well. I had a fantastic month on loan at Newcastle, played seven games, and in front of more than 50,000 people, so it was a great experience for me. In the reserves you are only in front of a few hundred, but then I went to Coventry and played in front of 30,000, then Newcastle 52,000, it's a massive difference, unbelievable. I really enjoyed my time there and now I hope I can push on some more.' 'Hutch', meanwhile, played the first 45 minutes of the second string's 2-1 defeat against Fulham on Tuesday, and reported no pain in his troublesome knee afterwards. Back in training with the first team, he will also be hoping to make an impact on Carlo Ancelotti in the weeks ahead. Fresh from qualifying for a second FA Youth Cup Final in three seasons, the Academy squad flies out to Texas on Friday morning to take part in the Dallas Cup, a prestigious youth tournament well established over the last 30 years. It is a tournament in which we have participated before, and the 10-day trip allows the boys to sample a number of aspects of professional football at elite levels - travel, hotel accommodation and an intense schedule with a minimum of five games. It also allows a number of younger players to ingratiate themselves within the group. 'It's nice to see another part of the world, and you learn about the lads and they learn a little bit too,' says coach Dermot Drummy. 'We're taking some younger lads over because of players going out on loan and a couple of injuries, so Conor Clifford won't go, he is injured, we have some senior players and some intermediates, with three Under 16s - Todd Kane, Danny Stenning and Archange Nkumu. 'It's nice for them to see the next level up and I think the games programme is quite busy, but mentally it's a nice break to get away from Cobham, let the boys have a swim, go to a rodeo, visit a children's hospital, see an NBA game and do some shopping. 'It's part of a footballer's life to see parts of the world and be in and out of hotels, and it's a big experience for them. We'll be very big on how they conduct themselves with the club badge on, you have to be in hotels representing Chelsea and it's a long time away - there will be times when they are a bit bored, so we have to see how they handle that.' Despite forthcoming league fixtures, and a two-legged Cup Final to come, it is an intense period for the lads with fierce competition expected. 'Five games is a lot, and there will be some sides who play totally different football,' Drummy explained, referring to our opposition - FC Dallas, Liga Deportiva Alajuelense and FC Monterrey Rayados. 'It's an Under 19 tournament so that's tough, and the expectancy really is just to see how they perform mentally and whatever we get out of it in terms of results will be a bonus.' As for the Youth Cup, our opponents will be either Aston Villa or Newcastle United, who are still to play their first leg of the semi. They meet at Villa Park on April 8, and St James's Park eight days later. http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~2005307,00.html |
ESSIEN: PUTTING IN THE HOURS After a frustrating period, Michael Essien is in positive mood as he works his way back towards fitness. The Ghanaian midfielder has not appeared for Chelsea since December when he tore a hamstring against APOEL in the Champions League, before damaging his knee while on international duty at the African Cup of Nations. Having suffered some complications in his rehabilitation, the 27-year-old believes he is now on the right track. 'I was hoping to be back available for the home game against Inter but the healing has taken a bit longer than expected because my knee kept swelling up,' he explained on his personal website. 'In two weeks I ended up having four lots of surgery to try and get the fluid away from the area. Finally it seems to be okay and I am making progress. I know I just have to be patient and give it time to settle down and heal. 'I'm in at 9.30 every morning and I don't leave until five and that's seven days a week. I'm spending lots of time in the pool as that's a good way to help the healing. 'On a positive note I'm feeling mentally strong and I try to stay philosophical about injuries. There are worse injuries than mine and there are people in the world suffering with far more serious problems than this.' http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~2004828,00.html |

Lagerback picks Kristiansson Lars Lagerback has picked Swedish Football Association match analyst Ulf Kristiansson to join him in Nigeria for the World Cup. The Swede had asked to bring three assistants along with him, an assistant coach, a match analyst and a physical trainer. With Roland Andersson confirmed as his assistant, it was the identities of the match analyst and physical trainer that remained a mystery. Kristiansson says he was asked last week and is happy to join up with his former boss. "(It was) fun to be asked and an excellent opportunity to learn," Kristiansson said on the Swedish Football Association website. "My time in Nigeria will begin in the month of May and throughout the World Cup. I was asked by Lars Lagerback at the end of last week and see it as an incredible boost." Kristiansson, according to the Swedish football association, has worked for the last two years as match analyst for the SvFF. He has also been youth coach at AIK, Hammarby and also worked as a senior coach. He is currently with Täby IS and also assists Sweden Under-19 women's coach Calle Barr Modeling. From South Africa, he will join up with the squad in Germany for the FIFA Women's Under-20 World Cup. "I will go directly from the World Cup in South Africa to Germany and the World Cup with the Swedish Under-20 women's squad," Kristiansson said. ---- ![]() |
Uche available for Zaragoza Nigerian striker Ikechukwu Uche has passed the final test in his quest to return to La Liga action - by resuming training with the Real Zaragoza first team on Thursday. The 26-year-old has been out of action since September 12 after damaging the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in Real Zaragoza's 4-1 loss to Sevilla in a Spanish League encounter. Uche showed no ill-effects in his first major training session with the likes of Jermaine Pennant, Adrián Colunga, Jiří Jarošík, Humberto Suazo and others. Nigeria’s top scorer during the World Cup qualifier despite missing the final two matches, Uche underwent surgery to fix his left knee and was recently given the go-ahead to resume full training. The handful of Zaragoza fans who came to the training ground to watch the Nigerian, saw him employ his trademark series of powerful runs and deft flicks to terrorise the opposing half. But Uche has played down the entire noise surrounding his return: "It was great fun playing alongside my team-mates again," he told KickOffNigeria.com after the training session. "I feel fine," he said. "It's obvious I'm still not 100%, but after the training I feel less worried about the future. "I am grateful to my club, teammates, club fans, every Nigerian out there including my national team-mates because they have all stood by me. "I had fun with everyone and we even worked on some neat one-twos together." The former Recreativo Huelva and Getafe player admitted the training had been little more than a practice session, but said it had still provided a valuable test of his fitness. "Now I gradually feel the sharpness after several endurance, physical and mental training sessions. Although he was happy with his first showing, Uche would not set a date for his competitive comeback. "There's no timetable or deadline. I'll be back when I'm ready and not before," he told KickOffNigeria.com. "The coach will decide and not me because I am just one of the players, but I am glad the coach and my team-mates are happy to have me around," he said. However, the smile and laughter quickly disappeared when asked if he actually met with Nigeria new manager Lars Lagerback as reported by a Nigerian sports daily. "I wonder where these people get such lies and terrible stories from," Uche lashed out. "I only met NFF president Sani Lulu here in Spain and we had talks about the future and the new coach. "And suddenly I hear and read that I met with the coach here in Spain. Sadly the man was never here and people are taking words from me that I met Lars Lagerback. "I even read that I asked him to come and see me, that I will not be fit until May and other terrible things. I just hope people would clarify or speak directly to me before writing lies and sad things. It’s a shame because I think the people and fans deserve to know the truth." http://www.kickoff.com/news/14586/uche-available-for-zaragoza.php |
Lagerback praises 'strong' Yusuf Mohammed Yusuf Mohammed's strong spirit has earned him praise from Super Eagles Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback, who visited the full back in Johannesburg on Thursday. Mohammed, 25, was tore his Achilles tendon during the semi final match of the African Cup of Nations finals in Angola, against the Black Stars of Ghana, and was immediately flown to South Africa by the NFF where he had surgery and has been in recuperation. “He’s a strong chap, and I particularly like his calmness and ambition. He’s very keen to get okay for the World Cup,” said Lagerback as he joined a delegation to visit with Mohammed in his abode in Johannesburg. Also in the party were NFF President Sani Lulu Abdullahi, Technical Committee chairman Taiwo Ogunjobi, NFF Deputy General Secretary (Technical), Emmanuel Ikpeme and Super Eagles’ Team Secretary, Enebi Achor. Mohammed is already walking without the aid of crutches and will resume light training in a week. http://www.kickoff.com/news/14585/lagerback-praises-strong-yusuf-mohammed.php ------ That "was". . .na wa o! Lagerback happy with Eagles base Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback inspected the Super Eagles Hampshire Hotel camp in Durban and came away pleased at what he saw, Media Coordinator Idah Peterside has said. Lagerback is on a three-day tour of facilities that the Eagles will use during their time in South Africa, and Peterside says the Swede is so far impressed. "We visited the hotel and the coach is very happy with it. "The place has been renovated and put in the right shape for the World Cup and it has been approved by FIFA, so we don’t foresee any problems. "We also looked at the training ground and the pitch is in good shape," Peterside said. Lagerback and his team left for Bloemfontein on Thursday morning to assess the stadium where the Eagles will also play. He is expected back in Abuja on Friday, and will be in Kano on Sunday to watch the Super Eagles B team play Niger in an African Nations Championship qualifier. http://www.kickoff.com/news/14574/lagerback-happy-with-eagles-base.php |

semid4lyfe:mba. . .no way. The guy is a Midfielder and should never be used as a defender (except well you know. . .) Sia1 did that and you saw the results. We played a lot better when he moved into the MF. That is his natural position. He is a players player. |
Lagerback to visit Eagles after SA trip Super Eagles Technical Adviser Lars Lagerback will only do his player visits in Europe after his inspection tour of Nigeria's base camp in South Africa. Earlier reports suggested that Lagerback had spent the last week visiting players in Europe, and even meeting with some of the players. But none of the players across Europe saw the coach. NFF sources have now told KickOffNigeria.com that the Swede will only make that tour after he returns from his South Africa trip. Lagerback left Lagos on Tuesday night and will visit Richards Bay, Durban, Bloemfontein and Johannesburg before returning to Nigeria on Friday. https://i39.tinypic.com/fm59qd.jpg http://www.kickoff.com/news/14551/lagerback-to-visit-eagles-after-sa-trip.php |

Nigeria must throw camp open - West Nigeria must throw camp open - West With less than three months to the kick-off of the World Cup, former Nigeria international Taribo West has advised Nigeria coach Lars Lagerback to throw open the Super Eagles' camp in order to get competition among the players. The former Inter star says it is the only way that the best players can be picked for Nigeria. "We should throw the camp open because it would bring the desired zeal to fight for places in the team," West said on MetroSports. "It should not be a question of relying on godfathers to make the team. When there is tough opposition among the players, it would lead to the transformation of the team. "There is the need to also encourage our home-based players to be part of the team. After all, we saw how Egypt won the last Nations Cup in Angola with a collection of players mostly from the local league. "Other countries also paraded home-based players in Angola. So, we have exceptional players too from the domestic league who can fit into the Super Eagles for the World Cup," he said. West was a member of the Nigeria team at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups. He won a gold medal with Nigeria at the Atlanta 96 Olympics. http://www.kickoff.com/news/14567/nigeria-must-throw-camp-open-west.php |
