AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2010. Melbourne Park 18 - 31 Jan, 2010.
https://i46.tinypic.com/28l5fzp.jpg

In conditions more resembling Wimbledon than the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of 2010 officially began this morning with the return of the men’s and women’s trophies to Rod Laver Arena.

The Norman Brookes Challenge Cup and the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup were presented to the crowd by former Australian Open champions John Newcombe and Evonne Goolagong Cawley.

With a legion of MLC ballkids forming a guard of honour and the Army Fanfare Team playing, the cups were carried up the Rod Laver Arena steps by security guards before being held aloft by Newcombe and Goolagong Cawley.

Dual Australian Open champion Newcombe reminisced about his second title win at the Australian Open, which was then held at Kooyong.

“The second time I won the championships was on January 1st, 1975 against Jimmy Connors. Jimmy and I had finished off the year, he was No.1 and I was No.2 and we’d never played during the year and I think that match was probably one of the toughest I’d played physically.”

Four-time winner Goolagong Cawley, who won her titles in succession from 1974 to 1977, revealed which of her victories was her favourite.

“It certainly brings back some wonderful memories ,  In 1977 I think that was my favourite [Australian Open win] and it was after having my daughter Kelly,” she said.

Some early morning rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of hundreds of fans who queued at the gates, eager for the tennis to begin.

Following the trophy presentation, roving entertainers kept fans occupied while others took the opportunity to rehearse their chants ahead of today’s play.

Day one of Australian Open 2010 features some tantalising matches, with players in action at Rod Laver Arena today including Maria Sharapova, Rafael Nadal, Kim Clijsters, Andy Murray, and Australians Peter Luczak and Jelena Dokic.

honeric01:
you should see a big deal about it because the more crowded the top is, the more difficult for Eyimba to lay claim to the league title, in fact, when last did Eyimba win the league? 2006?

You should have cause to worry because it's a beginning of more losses for Eyimba, Pillars outclassed them bro, they were outclassed.

As for Amodu, he's falling my hand and i don't fancy what i have seen so far, getting worse and Mozambique is there to put the icy on the cake.
No sir, its 2007. And we won FA cup 2009. tongue
So I don't see a big deal. No be today teams dey drop 3 points. Kano pillars no be small boys.
Benin outplayed Naija yet we won. Football no be mathematics. No be by error we dey TOP the league.

We should beat Mozambique any which way.

semid4lyfe:
I agree somewhat although I think the defence improved with the inclusion of Echiejile and Shittu. I think Mikel to an extent is dulling our play and killing our potential to play fast paced football and launch counter attacks. If you watch the match against Benin closely you'll notice there were 2 or 3 instances in which our strikers had run into wide open space and we could have launched fast counter attacks but Mikel in his customary fashion dilly-dallied on the ball too long and allowed the Benin defenders to close down those spaces. We need a 10 who can run and move with the ball and not someone who plays like Mikel. Oh, how I wish Muri Ogunbiyi (a Nigerian & ex-Enyimba) was playing for us. He controlled the midfield and anytime he was with the ball he showed ambition, ran at our defence and had our midfielders & defenders scampering, panicky and running helter skelter. We need some1 like that in our team. To me, he was the best player and the major threat on the pitch and not Omotoyosi.

I also think a large part of the SE problems is with the playing personnel and not the coach. The team is lazy, lacks pace and our strikers in particular, Yakubu Aiyegbeni lacks positional play and do not make runs off the ball. I pity and feel sorry for Amodu cos I sense lightning is about to strike him twice as he may not take us to the World cup. If anything, he so much deserves to take the SE to South Africa having qualified us twice. Anyway, before clicking on this thread I saw a thread saying Amodu had been sacked so make I go check am out.

By the way, I think Etuhu and Shittu were absolutely fantastic in the match against Benin.
Then pray tell us who selected them "lazy" players?  undecided

That said, my patriotic mind  cheesy wants us to win the CUP besides, Naija ni le and thus will continue to support the team. But defo we need to improve seriously.

To the man screaming that he has a 15 mins clip on virtually all threads  grin. You've been told many times. Split the video into 3 parts (5 mins each) or convert it to .flv then upload. It easier that way.

PS: In what format do you have them?

honeric01:
how i dey talk? so u think Kano pillar should have lost? they were the champion in 2007, so what did you expect to happen? Kano pillars is also a top team like many others. that's why i said it does not matter who's on top now, the end of the season will determine the TOP team.

i never supported him when he said Nigerian league was a bastardized league and that no player was worth the se shirt from the league or can you quote me?
Kano pillars are in the top of half of the table so I see no big deal in that Enyimba lost to them.
Besides, we still top the table by 4 points.
And only Wolves have scored more goals than us (and they have even conceded more);
Our defence is also not bad. . .only 9 goals against us (Second best to Rangers 8 )
No bad IMO.
So all these ones wey you dey talk na you sabi oo. That Enyimba lost one match is no BIG DEAL!

As for Amodu, there is nothing to say. . .but let me ask you, do you like what you see now?
Sports › Re: Nigerian League Fan Thread: Enter D Place N Know Every by FBS: 9:36pm On Jan 17, 2010
honeric01:
will you still be singing story by the time they continue losing to heartland, rangers, bayelsa and co?

well, i was just angry with amodu while watching that match, man, come and see players ready to run, jump, fly, jog, trek, craw out of zeal and determination just because they wanted to win.
Why you dey talk like this?
Enyimba is a TOP team or do you expect them to go on a loosing streak? Forget it. It won't happen.

Na you and Sagamite talk say Amodu na the best. grin So much so he feels no single local player is good enough to make the SE. Tell me you like how we are playing at the moment?

What a performance from both teams.

How I wish the SE can take some lessons from this. Both teams never gave up. They pushed each other all the way.

the big deal is that they dropped 3 crucial points and this is just the begining. man that match was so interesting that i had to switch from Tunisia vs Gabon to Pillars vs Eyimba, come see crowd, the crowd at that stadium was more than the crowd in any of the matches played by the SE in Angola.
Story. . .this is not the first time a top team will drop points. It is/was expected.
