NFF: AMODU REMAINS EAGLES' COACH The Nigeria Football Federation stated on Tuesday that Shuaibu Amodu is still the Head Coach of the Nigeria national football team, Super Eagles. Chairman of the NFF Technical Committee, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi said in Lubango: "We have heard several rumours going round concerning the sacking of Shuaibu Amodu. That is not correct. Amodu is still the Head Coach of the Super Eagles. "It is true that there are two types of coaches: those who are being hired and those who are being fired. The Nigeria Football Federation hired Shuaibu Amodu to do a job and he has been doing it. He qualified us for the World Cup finals and he is presently at the Cup of Nations. "The team may not be playing as well as people expect but it is a combination of factors and it is unfair to heap all the blame on the Head Coach. With the win over Benin Republic, the confidence is back and the players know that Nigeria expect victory over Mozambique. Everyone is working towards that. "The rumours are not good at this moment when the team wishes to concentrate fully on the job at hand. We plead with Nigerians to exercise patience and retain faith in the team as we go ahead in the tournament," said Ogunjobi. Nigeria take on Mozambique in Lubango on Wednesday in one of the two concluding matches of Group C of the 27th Africa Cup of Nations, with many feeling the World Cup–bound Super Eagles have not impressed in Angola. The Eagles need at least a draw against the Mambas at the 20,000 capacity Tundavala Stadium to reach the championship's quarterfinals. MARTINS IN LINE FOR NIGERIA START Obafemi Martins is in the frame to start Wednesday’s Group C clash between the Super Eagles and the Mambas of Mozambique in Lubango. The former Newcastle FC of England star returned to the African finals after dashing off to the UK for a court appearance and has since been showing good form at training for the two–time African champions. Nigeria need to get a result from Wednesday’s meeting with the southern Africans at the Tundavala Stadium to be sure of a slot in the tournament’s last eight. With the competition being governed by the head-to-head rule, it means Nigeria can no longer finish at the head of the table. Egypt, on six points, play Benin Republic in Benguela knowing they are confirmed Group C winners as victory for Nigeria over Mozambique can only take the Eagles to six points but having lost to Egypt, are worse off on head-to-head. It was raining heavily in Lubango on Tuesday afternoon but the wet conditions did not stop the Nigerians hitting the Tundavala Stadium for their last training session in the evening. Toothache–disturbed midfielder Dickson Etuhu is now much better after his troubles were sorted out and will also be looking forward to a place in the starting line–up, while fellow midfielder Yusuf Ayila is also out of the sick room. ESSIEN TO RETURN TO CHELSEA Chelsea Football Club is aware of the injury to Michael Essien and has been in contact with the Ghanaian national team. We will fully assess the injury on Michael's return to us later this week. Until then we are unable to comment further. It is a major blow to Ghana's Africa Cup of Nations hopes, the Black Stars were already without defenders John Pantsil and John Mensah, as well as midfielders Stephen Appiah and Sulley Muntari, so stand-in captain Essien's absence will be felt all the more. Essien was a substitute against Ivory Coast on Friday, and will now have to sit out the crucial match against Burkina Faso on Tuesday, which the Black Stars must win to progress to the quarter-finals of the Nations Cup. http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~1936461,00.html |
RESERVE REPORT: CHELSEA 2 WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS 0 Goals in either half from Daniel Sturridge and Gael Kakuta provided a comfortable win for the reserves on a cold Cobham evening. It was the first time the second string has played a home league game away from Brentford in more than two years, and a first time under the lights at the training ground, in a behind-closed-doors environment. To mark the occasion, viewers on Chelsea TV were treated to an encouraging display from the Chelsea youngsters, Kakuta's long-range strike the highlight of the game after Sturridge had volleyed home from close range in the first half. Wolves barely threatened, instead struggling to contain their more illustrious opponents as Chelsea goalkeeper Rhys Taylor remained untested for the entire 90 minutes. Chelsea's line-up was a strong one, Steve Holland's selection strengthened by the recent returns from loan of Taylor, left-back Patrick van Aanholt and midfielder Jack Cork, while first-team experience was provided by Nemanja Matic, Kakuta and forwards Fabio Borini and Sturridge. http://www.chelseafc.com/page/LatestNews/0,,10268~1936760,00.html |

OK I get ya point. FIFA . . .CAF . . .rubbish set of people. Honestly I don't get that sort of rule. . .a silly and baseless one. Mali launch protest as they leave Africa Cup of Nations The Mali Football Federation (FMF) made a protest to the Confederation of African Football (Caf) over the Angola versus Algeria game. Mali claim the sides purposefully played out a goalless draw that ensured they both progressed to the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals. However, Algeria's Hameur Bouazza insists his side were trying to win. "We wanted to keep the ball and we knew Mali were winning 3-1 and we tried to score the goal," he said. The draw in the final Group A game resulted in Algeria finishing level on four points with Mali, who beat Malawi 3-1 in their final match. Algeria, though, advanced thanks to their better head-to-head record with Mali after the Desert Foxes beat the Eagles in their group game. In their protest to Caf the FMF claimed the attitude of both sides was contrary to Fifa's ethics of fair play. The FMF also stated that Caf had taken action in the past, for instance neither Cameroon nor Egypt were given points for a draw that occurred at the 2001 African Junior Championship. However, Angola defender Rui Marques insisted there was nothing untoward. "I don't think any team wants to take the risk of conceding a goal and maybe going out of the tournament," he told BBC Sport. "In the first half they started much better than us that's why we were a little bit scared of conceding a goal which was a big, big risk for us. "In the second half we were better but the football just didn't happen." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/8467456.stm |

chic2pimp:Oh Yes she was able to. She is the BEST female tennis player EVER! Infact UP WILLIAMS SISTERS! ![]() Serena Williams defiant on return to Grand Slams Serena Williams made a solid start to her Australian Open title defence and then questioned the fine that followed her last Grand Slam appearance. The American beat Poland's Urszula Radwanska 6-2 6-1 in her first Grand Slam match since she verbally abused a line judge at the US Open in September. Williams could have been suspended for the outburst but in the end was fined. "I don't know anyone who ever got fined like that, and people have said worse and done worse," she said. "I just thought it was a bit much, but that was that." She added: "$92,000 is a lot of money to fine someone. I always said what I did wasn't right, but I turned that around and I'm actually raising $92,000 to educate ladies, women, also for my school in Africa, and also I'm giving some money to Haiti as well. The conditions were very tough Ana Ivanovic "I actually think it was good that the whole incident happened, that I got fined, because at the end of the day I'm raising money for other people." The top seed wore heavy strapping on her right leg as a precaution and was below her best against Radwanska, but still had far too much power for her teenage opponent as she won in one hour and 13 minutes. Former world number one Ana Ivanovic, the 2008 runner-up, also progressed after she beat Shenay Perry 6-2 6-3. The Serb has slipped to 21st in the rankings over the last year, with her serve a particular problem, and she made five double faults and faced nine break points against Perry. "The conditions were very tough," she said. "It was very cold and windy and a lot different than at the Brisbane International or what I've been used to. "But I just tried to work my way through, just taking time and tried to stay composed. I thought I played well and served good." Elsewhere, eighth seed Jelena Jankovic overcame a slow start to see off Romania's Monica Niculescu 6-4 6-0 and set up a clash with Britain's Katie O'Brien. Australia's Sam Stosur, the 13th seed, was less than convincing as she beat Han Xinyun of China 6-1 3-6 6-2. Virginie Razzano, the French 18th seed, tumbled out at the hands of Russia's Ekaterina Makarova who clinched a 6-2 6-3 victory. But Razzano's compatriot, 11th seed Marion Bartoli, did progress with a straightforward 6-4 6-1 win over Rossana De Los Rios of Paraguay. Serena's sister Venus, a finalist here in 2003, begins her campaign against Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in the first of Tuesday's night matches on Hisense Arena. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/tennis/8466965.stm |
