Tracing of people via their phones is usually possible via imei or IP addresses.

Though you're not using VPN, if your phone number is known, then it would be easy to know the IP address you use - but unless ur imei is known through ur phone dealer or by checking ur packaging, tracking through this method is pretty difficult.
(So presently, it is still possible to track your phone today, though you are not using vpn esp if your number is known - or if you're surfing some sites like Facebook Twitter, Instagram, etc...but this is only possible through enlisting the assistance of google or Facebook, who will still use your IP to know your location.)

The VPN actually masks your IP because it searches for available IP you can hook unto to surf. So, while you may be in Nigeria, your IP may be reading US, UK, etc - which will fool a tracking agency.

Summarily, pls go ahead n get urself a VPN app (thunder VPN is suggested) so you can 'play' in the bird street.
A disadvantage of VPN though, is that some apps or site may not be functional or open in your phone unless you deactivate. Otherwise, it is safe.

As for not knowing the email used, this presupposes that you have more than one. Try one n click on the "forgot password" link.
The response you'll get will determine if that email is in their servers or not. If it is, they'll send a guide to you via that particular email on password change process. If not, try another email, etc.

To forestall the loss of passwords for your various apps/sites, you can store the same in your Google Keep Notes app or the Microsoft One Note. Then hide the app (using yiur android hide facility) so only you can bring it out anytime you wanna use the same. Otherwise, keep a manual record of the same in your diary or notebook.

1. My Mazi, Odogwu WhiteMoney becomes HoH to the eternal shame of detractors n naysayers.
