Business / Re: Insult: MTN Locates West African Headquarters In Ghana by Feesha: 5:11am On Jan 13, 2010
Why all the noise about the billions MTN is packing? NITEL had the chance to do that for several decades, they could not. They could not provide the service. It's a pity our memories are so short. Many of us cannot live without our handsets again, because they are vital to our business, social and private endeavours. How's that? It's because MTN and other networks provide the service. Do you know what it costs them to provide the service? They are ORGANIZED. Nigeria is so disorganized! so corrupt. No respect for the RULE OF LAW (or the seven point agenda!), even at the apex level. Is MTN or the whole world not aware of the show of shame surrounding the absence of our President?

It's frightening to think of MTN stopping operations in Nigeria because other networks may follow suit for the same reason(s). Then do we go back to NITEL? Remember that the promise of 6000 Megawatts of electricity failed disgracefully without any cogent reason. Just same old stories.

Fellow Nigerians, the " MTN insult" should be treated as a warning sign. Things are really going bad (is it not already bad?) in Nigeria. Let's be realistic and change the system even from our mindset. WE ARE TOO CORRUPT!
Sports / Fifa U-17 World Cup Final May Not Be Broadcast - As Loc Owes Tv Station N3.5bn by Feesha: 5:44am On Nov 13, 2009
LESS than 72 hours to the end of the ongoing Nigeria 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup, Africa Independent Television (AIT), which was awarded the broadcast rights by FIFA, is being owed about N3.5 billion by the main Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the competition.

AIT, according to investigations, has not been paid a kobo by the LOC, though it spent about N12 billion to put the International Broadcast Co-ordination Centre (IBCC), where all the broadcast activities for the competition are being co-ordinated and later distributed to the various international stations.

It was gathered that AIT, because of its lean purse, could no longer provide the required services to the world, having been cut off by the MTN, which is its service provider, as a result of non-payment.

Further findings have it that AIT is indebted to the sum of N700 million, which is the amount MTN is claiming for providing fibre optic, internet connectivity and telephone lines being used at the competition, which has now been cut off.

What that means is that, transmitting of the remaining matches and the closing ceremony will not be taken live and this is contrary to the contract AIT signed with FIFA before it was awarded the broadcast rights.

Reacting to the internet problem, FIFA, through its media officer, Arai Hidenori, a Japanese, informed AIT that there was still no internet and fixed lines at the IBCC, “we need connections for tomorrow’s match; please, help us.”

Mr. Tony Akiotu, the Acting Managing Director of Daar Communication Plc, the parent body of AIT, told the Nigerian Tribune, on Thursday, in his office, that the situation was very critical.

Mr. Akiotu confirmed that MTN had cut off AIT’s internet facilities, because of the N700 million it was owing them, adding, “this is not our fault, as the Local Organising Committee (LOC) is yet to pay a kobo up to date. And as I talk to you, we are, indebted to Fidelity Bank Plc, having taken a loan from it to prosecute the project. The total expenditure is a little over N12 billion which was used to purchase eight uplink trucks, building of the IBCC and equipping it with the required standard internet facilities and other relevant facilities, as recommended by FIFA.

“I must say the LOC has not been fair to us after everything said and done. In fact, we requested for N5 billion, which was later reduced to about N3.5 billion after a meeting of the Presidential Committee on Harmonisation and Negotiation, headed by Director-General of the National Sports Commission, (NSC), Chief Patrick Ekeji, which approved the said amount.

“We (AIT) agreed to the amount simply because we believed that as a Nigerian company, we should be seen to be contributing our little quota to the development of the nation and this we have done through the sacrifice we’ve made as far as the Host Broadcast Rights are concerned.

“ It is obvious the LOC is insensitive to our plight.

“We have written about eight letters to government on the issue, hoping for the best, held meetings with the Sports Minister and LOC officials but nothing has improved.

“This is rather frustrating. We held trust for the LOC as Host Broadcasters, with FIFA in the picture, only to be denied our entitlements. We cannot guarantee that the final and closing ceremony will be transmitted live to the world, as MTN has cut off its services. As Host Broadcasters, we are to provide the signals to the world. We have the mandate to produce highlights of the matches to be sent to all the stations the world over. But I am afraid, this will not be possible, unless we settle the debt we are owing MTN. It will be embarrassing if we fail to send signals out,” Akiotu stated.

All efforts to get the comments of the LOC proved abortive, as the mobile line of Emeka Odikpo, General Manager, Media, was not going through.

When MISCOFFIED (probable real names Segun Tolu or Oluwaluyi Tolu ) duped me of N16,800 for a global sim card, i posted it here so as to serve as a warning for others not to fall for the 419 tricks of the so-called nairaland friends, but my post was removed by the moderator. Now another one has happened on a larger scale.

MISCOFFIED initially sent me an account no. as follows

Prince Segun Tolu
Acct type: GLOFIRST, First Bank
Acct. no. 6280512001106794341

I pretended that First Bank refused to accept payment into the account just to further test his genuineness. I then asked if he has any account with GTBank. Later he sent me this account no.

Name: Oluwaluyi Tolu
Acct. no. 2344989261590

Nairalanders, BEWARE of these account nos.

@honsule

You guessed right. i actually paid N16,800 to miscoffied. Has he done it to somebody close to you before?

@all

Thanks for your concerns. He sounded genuine and very polished. But my laugh will come last. I told him he is trying to mess up a Yoruba man but he appears to want to 419 me. Am still giving him the grace to send the package or anything that will give value for my money.

@miscoffied

I know you are reading this. You are a Yoruba man from your account names. Otherwise if the owner of the name is a collaborator, he'll be the one to run mad o. Send my package now!

@Mustay
This topic should not have been moved. Miscoffied convinced me that he is genuine by insisting that if he has been duping people, how come its not exposed on Nairaland! other Nairalanders should see this post so that they will not fall in his trap.

Nairalanders, beware. I paid into the bank account of Miscoffied (his nairaland name), after several negotiations on phone, for a global sim card (according to him). He promised he will send it by courier. But since i paid, he stopped answering my calls or he puts the phone on answering machine.

Miscoffied, send me the package you promised or i will reveal your real name(s) and the two account numbers you sent to me

NCC inaugurates committee to register Sim Cards E-mail
Written by Laide Akinboade
Friday, 18 July 2008

The move to nip criminal activities committed with the use of mobile phones recorded a major boost in Abuja yesterday when the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, the Nigerian security and intelligence agencies, and major telecom operators reached a consensus for immediate implementation of a nationwide registration of all existing and prospective prepaid mobile phone services.

The consensus was reached during a consultative forum hosted by the NCC, for the operators; at the behest of the security agencies who have complained to the Commission that criminal activities perpetrated through this category of users have become a source of concern as disclosure of identities of the users are not required during the purchase of the lines.

The Executive Vice-Chairman of the Commission, Ernest Ndukwe, who, yesterday in Abuja, inaugurated a committee that will look into the modalities that will be used in the registration of Sim cards, said such documentation will help the security agencies to track down criminals who use mobile phones to perpetrate evil.

The NCC boss stated that deadline would be given to GSM operators to ensure the registration of personal details of both old and new subscribers and that all unregistered prepaid cards may be deactivated after the deadline of registration.

According to him, security agents have complained to NCC in the past about the difficulty they have in tracking criminals who use Mobile phones to perpetrate crimes.

Engr. Ndukwe admitted that one of the challenges that will affect the project is the non-existence of national identification for majority of Nigerian populace.

“The commission has been deliberating on this issue for sometime and additionally we have received complaints from security agencies expressing growing concern about the use of mobile phones to commit crimes and the difficulty in tracking down the perpetrators who take advantage of unregistered Sim Card especially for prepaid consumers.”

He noted that in view of the fact that there are over 50million sim cards currently in circulation in Nigeria, the commission intends to collaborate with all network operators who issue Sim cards to subscribers and promised that the modalities will be vital and at the same time simple.

He observed, “Sim card is an area of security concern. Criminals exploit the anonymity of prepaid Sim cards to avoid detection. This project will be a catalyst for the development of a credible database. If properly managed and administered, the database will be a veritable source of information not only for the sector but also for the business and financial sector of the economy of the economy.”

He cited some countries that already have sim cards registers, such as, Australia, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Norway, Switzerland and South Africa.

Membership of the committee include representatives of MTN, CELTEL, MTEL, GLO, Intercellular, Reltel, Starcomms, NCC, the media, Independent National Electoral Commission, National Population Commission, security agencies, and SIM card suppliers.

Its a pity that each time our govt. agencies fail in their duties, they resort to adding more hardship to Nigerians. I remember at one time Police said they wanted to track vehicles. They introduced their so-called electronic computer registration of vehicles ECMR. That is apart from the normal registration of vehicles which involves obtaining an undefined number of papers, (It depends on the state you are, the police you meet at a check point and your knowledge of your rights). After two or three years, Police abandoned the ECMR project!

The same goes for numerous other registrations in this country. Notably the National ID card project. What came of it? Though some people were able to obtain theirs, millions are still searching for theirs. If you registered in Abia state, maybe your friend in Benin, will be the one to bring your ID for you, after finding it carelessly dumped somewhere there. And how authentic is the information on a National ID card?

NCC that cannot control the quality of service of the GSM operators is now being blackmailed to register SIM cards. Pls Engr. Ndukwe, the only thing a Nigerian can claim to be enjoying today is GSM. NEPA - Bleep up, Police - aiding & abetting. I even wonder whether there is any Intelligence training for Nigerian Police. Apart from N20 collection on the road, which seems to be their notable function, they cannot intelligently trace a crime. All they do is "arrest all of them". A person commits a crime in kano, police comes to Kaduna to arrest the father, the mother and all others that are in the house on that day. Is that intelligent work? Now EFCC wants to follow suit with their so-called sophistication.

Please face those that are stealing millions everyday and forget the small fries like free browsers. Or make browsing affordable for Nigerians. I was browsing with Glo and after downloading Yahoo homepage, i checked my account. About N70 had gone. I have not even checked my mail! How can i afford to browse like that?

Thanks. I got round the problem by creating another user. I was able to open the registry, remove the AVG keys, but when i tried to install the AVG again, somehow, it still detected that i had installed it before. It refused to install. Well i have downloaded AVIRA better. But i love the AVG 8.0. Apparently, there is no completely free AVG download again. Those on AVG 7.0 are receiving messages to upgrade to 8.0 cos the update will soon stop. So much for Naija and our craze for free things. Poverty no good o!

I use XP. I used to open my laptop's registry without problems. Now, if i use regedit to open it, it says, "Your administrator has locked the registry for editing". But I am the administrator. I have not created any other user apart from the administrator. Can someone help out? Actually am trying to re-install AVG 8.0 after the 30 day trial period expired. My idea is to open the registry and delete the AVG key.
