It’s true I am expecting a baby and the father is my son’s friend. But you have already judged me. The reason you have judged me even before hearing my full story is because I am a woman. If I were a man, people wouldn’t be carrying all kinds of rumours. It is true that I am pregnant and true that the person who owns it is my son’s friend. But be honest with me, if I were a man, would you come and ask me questions? Would you be looking confused, even disgusted at me? I am not proud of what has happened but hey, here we are. How did this happen? What else do you think? When my husband left me, I remained a single mother for years because of my children. I didn’t have any relationship with any man. I worked hard and raised my children, all three of them. After my last born went to university almost two years ago, his elder siblings began to chip in for his tuition. That’s when I decided to give myself a break, you know. I went with some of my old school friends for a vacation. We had been planning it for years. And I had been wanting to just travel, you know and since we were going in a group, we got a good discount. We went to Marrakech, in Morocco. When you are with your school friends, you become a girl! Being with my girlfriends opened my eyes again. It helped me see the life I had deliberately left out because I was raising my children. That was me! I felt alive again; like a girl again. In short, you know that movie, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, the one acted by Angela Bassett, that American babe? I met this young guy, in his 30s, and he made me feel like a schoolgirl again. He sat beside me at the hotel’s restaurant and teased me and my friends. He said he knew we were “Naija babes.” I was like, “Babes ke, these grannies?” But he complimented all of us and paid special attention to me. He told us the fun places to visit because apparently, he had been visiting Morocco for so many years. My friends began to call him my “boyfriend.” I ran into my “boyfriend” at the perfume market and he helped me choose perfumes to buy. That’s when he complimented my skin, my hair. The silly boy was generally very…you know, cool. I asked him what he was doing in Morocco. He said he followed some friends from work for a birthday bash of one of them! So these young people just decide, let’s go to Morocco for a party and they just go…just like that! They are not paying huge rent or school fees, so they can travel anywhere they like, just like that, o! Of course, we exchanged phone numbers and he left Morocco days ahead of me. We spent 10 days there, and he and his friends left after three days…the things these children do. Why would I spend so much money booking tickets and a hotel and leaving after three days? Me, I would max the cost of travel to the T. Back in Naija, he called me. I didn’t make the first move. He wanted to know if he could come to see me. I invited him to my house. Look at me. I am 54 years old but I think our generation age better so you won’t know I am that “young.” Besides, I am too old for corner, corner love. I liked the boy, I called him Bobo and found he was 34 years old. I became Stella who got her groove back Ok, I know I had told you I never had any relationship with any man while I raised my children, I never did but a few years back, I had a small thing with one 65-year-old chief. Then my last born was, maybe 15 years or so. I thought, well, body no bi wood but the chief was a mistake. Anyway, Bobo and I began to “see” each other…I was not embarrassed by him. I will say, I was self-conscious. This is Lagos where you see all kinds of things. And like I said before, if men can go out with younger girls, what is wrong with a woman going out with a younger man if there is mutual respect? Thankfully, he has a job. He is doing well and had told me he had broken up with his girlfriend. He could be lying, you say? Ok, even so, what was I meant to do with the lies? I am a good mother to my children, I have raised them well. If I choose to have an affair now, I don’t think anyone should raise their nose at me. Anyway, I stopped seeing my menses for some time. In fact, when my friends and I were in Morocco, menopause was our main topic of discussion. We made fun of ourselves. You know, we were all in that age bracket where menopause had set in or setting in. I had stopped seeing my menses a few months prior. Yes, I had the occasional hot flushes but no dryness down there…you know. I had long forgotten that I even have anything they use for sex! Chief with erectile dysfunction The last time I had a sexual encounter was with that chief…chief that couldn’t get it up long enough to satisfy me or even he himself… Let me continue with my pregnancy story, please. Well, Bobo and I began to “see” regularly. He was fun, I had discovered I had something “down there.” You know. I wasn’t worried about pregnancy or disease because I told my Bobo I didn’t want to have to deal with sexually transmitted disease and he was such a darling that he went to get tested and showed me he was clean…so wetin remain? Like I said, I didn’t see my menses…I didn’t know something had “come” upon me. I never got sick…like pregnancy sick! All my symptoms were menopause symptoms. Insomnia, hot flushes…feeling bloated. Omo, I thought I had fully come into menopause because you see, even though I wasn’t vomiting, which I did when I was pregnant for all my three kids, my mind never wandered to pregnancy, at 54! Having not seen my menses for about 1 year or more. Hummn, with this one, the symptoms fooled me. At first, my friends put it down to menopause. All my symptoms were checked with menopause. Then my clothes began to get a little snug. Foolishly, I put it down to me finally enjoying life. Being in a relationship, you know… adding weight because I had finally found love with my Bobo. Then, some weeks later. I stood in front of my friend in a boutique, trying on a new dress. She looked shocked and said as if she was in a trance, “Moni, o ti lo yun!” Huh! Then my symptoms just made sense I looked at her, you know, like in slow-mo. I immediately knew she was right. It was at that moment that my brain reset! That explained nausea, not menopause. It explained the weight gain, not menopause. That explained my bulging stomach, not menopause! What wasn’t explained though was my full breasts…which I ignored and pinned on menopause! Te’mi ba mi! I couldn’t laugh! In a matter of minutes, I told my friend to go with me to see my doctor! Well, what did you think? At this point, my children knew nothing about my relationship with Bobo. It’s not their business, actually. But a child, at my age? Haba, that’s asking for trouble. This isn’t about me worrying about money to care for a child, it’s the care that worried me. I am too old and too done with childbearing to start from the beginning with a pregnancy at 54! The doctor told me I was too far gone to have it removed! Almost 5 months, gone! See me, see wahala! Can you imagine? What if the child has a congenital birth defect? What if the child is born with some form of deformity? I mean, I am an adult but having a child…haa, I will relocate abroad o! Well. That was the point I knew I owed my children an explanation…of sorts. It was in telling them about my situation that my first son suddenly asked me what and where I met Bobo and all that. It turned out he was friends with Bobo! My son and my boyfriend are friends Not close friends but a guy he knows acknowledges and well calls his friend’s friend. It happened that both of them had worked together when my son did his IT with the firm Bobo used to work at. They had mutual friends. Over the next few days, they both met at my house…well. It was awkward at first but my son, who is 28 years old, told me he supports me in whatever I want to do with the pregnancy… That’s not my problem, to be honest, yeah, I appreciate his love but having a child when I am 55 years old is a big issue for me. I stopped all of that breastfeeding, rocking baby at night, and nursery stuff years back, I mean, my last born is in his second year in uni at 19 years. There will be a 20-year gap between my baby and the closest sibling. That is my worry. As for the baby’s father, the silly boy is happy. This will just change my life in ways I have no immediate plans for. But I still have three more months to go. The arrest was made following a complaint lodged at the Bulabulin Divisional Police headquarters by one Yusuf Ibrahim. The Borno State Police Command in Maiduguri has arrested and detained a lone sheep and her two lambs following a complaint that it ate a heap of fried fish displayed for sale. The incident occurred at Bulabulin Ward in the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council on Saturday. The sheep and her lambs were said to still be detained as at Sunday morning. The arrest was made following a complaint lodged at the Bulabulin Divisional Police headquarters by one Yusuf Ibrahim who sells fish along a busy road in the neighbourhood. According to Zagazola Makama, a Counter-Insurgency Expert and Security Analyst, Ibrahim complained that the sheep had been 'terrorising' him for years. He said he had endured the intrusion and criminal behaviour of the animal for five years, but that its action on Saturday caused him huge losses. Ibrahim further remarked that the sheep had formed the habit of coming around his shop and patiently keeping watch from a distance while he fried fish. “And then as soon as my attention shifts, the sheep makes a dash towards the table and before I knew it, it had eaten as much as it could before being sent away,” he said. He added that he had tolerated it for five years and had asked the owner to take action by putting the sheep on a leash. He, however, said his appeals were to no avail. The owner of the sheep, one Luba Mohammed - a housewife, lamented that she does not know how and when the sheep developed a liking for fried fish. She admitted that the fish seller had indeed complained to her several times over the years about the actions of the sheep. The woman begged Ibrahim to temper justice with mercy and release the sheep, with a promise that she will either sell, slaughter or put it on a leash. https://saharareporters.com/2022/11/06/nigerian-police-arrest-detain-sheep-stealing-borno

Deity sends colony of millipedes to their homes to summon them for second hearing AN ordained reverend and senior member of a church in Calabar, Cross-River State, who reported his ex-lover who is a single mother to a deity in Akwa–Ibom State for allegedly rebuffing his marriage proposal, causing the deity to summon the woman with a colony of millipedes, is on the run after receiving a dose of his own medicine. After separately appearing before the deity with the ex-lover on the first hearing, the reverend, who denied lodging a complaint against the single mother, turned down appearances at the second and third hearings of his case by the deity. The deity sent a colony of millipedes to his Calabar home on Tuesday night with a thunder strike and letter, in the same manner, he caused the idol to send to his ex-lover and student of the University of Calabar. Findings by Saturday Vanguard showed the reverend ran away from the deity but is still in Calabar. A source said: “He is sober, hanging out at a joint where they sell concoctions and hot drinks inside an open field next to his building on Edim Otop Street. I think friends, who have now abandoned him to his fate, misled him.” Rev, ex-lover had misunderstanding –youth leader A youth leader, who pleaded anonymity, said: “Margaret, and the man had a rift after the reverend allegedly saw her with another man, which made him furious. Instead of apologizing and retracing her steps, she resorted to insulting her ‘benefactor’ anytime she sees him. “She is a single mother whom the man took care of, including her child, but we believe the man needed companionship since his wife had allegedly left him, but the way we learned she abused the man publicly was quite unfair, she could have sorted out things amicably. “We deduced from the letter that came with the colony of millipedes that the lady had issues with her lover, a community leader popularly known as reverend, who stays around Edim Otop Street, off Atimbo Road. “ We also heard he has been in a relationship with the lady who we know as Margaret and who we believe he has been taking care of for over a decade in terms of welfare, education, and otherwise. “He took her as a help before now and started doing other things for her, we learned he allegedly bought land for her and also made sure they catered for her mum when she had arthritis and needed a massage. The reverend provided a machine. “He further facilitated a sewing machine and other things for her, but what we saw in the letter was that they summoned her on October 18. However, the message got here on October 19 and she is supposed to appear before the deity in Umuko, Okobo, Oron in Akwa Ibom state to answer for herself by October 21, 2022. “From the letter, they requested her to return a set of foreign pots that the reverend said was missing from his apartment, massaging machine, and other things. “It was not the first time we have experienced this kind of summons with millipedes from Okobo in Oron Akwa Ibom state. I did not consult a witch doctor–Reverend Contacted, Reverend Timothy (not real name), who is a reverend at a church along Atimbo Road denied being responsible for the woman’s ordeal. He confirmed to Saturday Vanguard that he knows the girl and had some issues with her over some set of pots and a sewing machine, but was never behind her travails, adding that as an ordained minister, he can never consult a native/witch doctor. The preacher also said he knew nothing about the colony of millipedes sent to the girl’s apartment. He, however, admitted that the woman insulted him when they had issues and he told some people in the church about what had happened, saying he left everything in the hands of God and the news of the invasion of the woman’s pavement by millipedes dismayed him. “She insulted me because I complained that a lot of things were missing from my place which I asked her about and she said she knew nothing about, sets of pots from abroad, a sewing machine amongst others. “But I must tell you categorically that I have nothing, absolutely nothing to do with her ordeal, I consulted no witch doctor to send millipede to her place,” he stated. The single mother went to Okobo in Akwa Ibom, on the penultimate Friday, to answer the summons by the deity. How I met him–Margaret The 300- level student of the University of Calabar, UNICAL, simply identified as Margaret, who spoke to Saturday Vanguard, revealed that she met her benefactor, who later turned lover and now her ex-lover in 2010 when she was pregnant with her daughter, on her way to see her mother in Akpabuyo local government area. “I was pregnant at the time and I was only 19 years, I did not even know I was pregnant, so I took some herbs because I was feeling somehow, even at that I still did not get better. That was the reason I opted to visit my mum, it was how I met the reverend. “I was trying to get a vehicle to Akpabuyo, along Atimbo Road, and jam-packed vehicles would not just stop to pick up a passenger, but when he was passing, he saw me and asked where I was going. He obliged me and took me to my destination, that is how he got my number and the rest is history. “He has married three women and had three children from them, but none of them could stay, they all left, I came into the picture as a help. I cook, clean, and take care of the house. “It metamorphosed into an intimate relationship because we started an affair, but we had an understanding that he would take care of me. We agreed that anytime he got money, he would settle me with money or land. “I am still young and in the University, how do I take care of my bills and all that, I told myself I had to leave the relationship because of all the understanding we had, he never kept to any. “I learned he got paid about N4 million as gratuity. When I told him to fulfill his side of the bargain, he got mad at me, I allowed him to be. “The highest I was getting was N10, 000 or N5, 000, he has never at any point paid my school fees, and I am the one training myself in school. I want to get married, but not to him, I will marry someone that will make me happy. I got nothing from him as he has been lying to people,” she said. Our encounter at the shrine “At the Okobo shrine, I paid N21, 500 as a consultation fee. Since I started going there, I have spent N282, 000 so far. There, I found out that he lied to the chief priest and allegedly paid N300, 000 for something mysterious to happen to me. “He also lied to the chief priest of the deity in Okobo, Oron, Akwa Ibom state, that I stole his set of the pot and massaging machine and I should return them. “I was told by the chief priest that he paid money for me to be eliminated spiritually, he paid 100, 000 three times. “But the chief priest refused to do his bidding. It was after he started mounting so much pressure that the priest had collected so much from him and refused to do anything that they sent millipedes to summon me to the shrine of that deity. “In the letter, they asked me to appear before the deity on October 21, and if I liked I should report to Army, Police, or any authority, that it has no meaning. I had no choice, I went there, and paid N21, 500 as a consultation fee. “That was when they started asking me questions about the man; they asked if I knew the reverend, and my answer was affirmative. The man who is denying that he was not behind my ordeal was also at the shrine. Chief priest queried why he tied me for 12 yrs “The chief priest asked him why he held me down for 12 years, but he never responded. I remember that when we first met, he bought beverages he gave to me; I suppose that whatever he did was through those items because it was as if they took a veil off my face. “I have been going to sleep there and coming back in the morning for about seven years because I do not live with him. I, not he, paid for the house where they sent the millipedes. He rented no house for me, the only thing he did was assist me when I was searching for an apartment. “They asked me to pay N300, 000 and that after the matter, they would compel him to return the money to me if I am found innocent. “Now, that we have gone to the deity, I have been able to pay N200, 000, including other expenses, amounting to N282, 000. “I borrowed the N200, 000, and as I speak, I could not pay my school fees, I have been to the place (deity) twice and saw him there too. Preacher shuns second hearing “They asked him to come the last time I was there, but he never showed up, I left the place at about 8-00 pm, last Friday, back to Calabar. “I sold my sewing machine for N40, 000 just to support the bills paid at the shrine, the car people are saying he bought for me is my mother’s car, my mum is a businesswoman, she owns a shop at Watt Market, and he did not buy any car for me. The Toyota Camry belongs to my mum, I withdrew money from her account as she instructed and paid for the car, it is not mine either. “They have asked him to come back to the shrine, and I heard that he and the chief priest are currently having a rift over his non-appearance. “I believe God wants to use my situation to expose the man who claims to be man of God . As we speak, the things he claimed I took from him like chair, I took them to the shrine and I owe him absolutely nothing. “When those millipedes appeared at my apartment, he was the first person I called, and I told him about it, his response was ‘that is the response to the message you sent to me.’ “I did not understand it until I read the letter, although it contained no name, I could relate when I read massaging machine, I immediately knew it was from him. “I am trying to put all that behind me because I am writing my examination, I hope to get my money back because I did him no wrong, Instead, it is the other way round, he wanted to destroy me spiritually, but my God said no,” Margaret said. Theater on Edim Otop Street On Wednesday morning, there was mild drama at Edim Otop Street residence of the pastor in the Calabar Municipality local government area, following the mysterious appearance of a colony of millipedes. The unpleasant incident, Saturday Vanguard gathered, was another command from the deity in Okobo, Oron, Akwa Ibom state, to the reverend behind the first summons on his ex-lover for reneging on her purported marriage promise. According to eyewitnesses, the colony of millipedes mysteriously appeared with thunder stroke during the light showers, yesterday (Tuesday) evening. The single mother had responded to the summon by the deity at Okobo in Akwa Ibom to clear herself, but the petitioner refused to appear on the second hearing at the shrine. A resident, who identified herself as Mrs. Felicia, simply said the deity summoned him to come and narrate his side of the story. “We saw him yesterday (Tuesday), but nobody has seen him this morning (Wednesday), so we do not know his whereabouts. “The millipedes appeared with a letter when thunder struck, while it rained that evening. “I heard they asked him to come and clarify something at the shrine, it is like he was being adamant, so they had to summon him traditionally,” Felicia said. Saturday Vanguard learned that the deity commanded the reverend to appear before it on October 2 and the single mother also traveled, the same day, to honor her own invitation. Both are likely to meet again at the shrine, like in the first hearing, to shed more light on their dealings. Shop owners near the residence of the reverend shut down their shops on Wednesday for fear of the millipedes invading their shops, while passersby thronged his home to know the development. Finish what you started Margaret, who responded to a fresh inquiry by Saturday Vanguard after her third visit to the shrine, Wednesday, at Okobo, Akwa Ibom, appealed to the preacher to man up, and appear before the deity in order for her to recover the money she has so far spent. “I have been to the shrine three times and would go back there again on Friday (yesterday), making it my fourth visit. “I want to use this medium to appeal to him to please come and clear himself so that they can return my money because I was told that if they find me innocent, they would return the money I paid there. “He has failed to appear there twice, he only came on the first day I went, which was on October 21. Since then, he has not come back to the place again, and I believe that was the reason the chief priest also summoned him to appear. “When I got to the shrine, they asked me to pay another N6, 000, and they gave me some items to sprinkle at my apartment so that other millipedes at my apartment will leave, many of them have crept into hidden places. “They gave me something to sweep the dead millipedes into a bag and discard, and they told me I am not completely free until the man comes to clear his side. I learned he is to pay about N1 million, from this amount, they will cleanse him and my money returned if I am not found guilty. “My worry now is that I borrowed N200, 000 to make up the payment, he should please return the money, so I can repay my debt. My mother is worried and sick because she is not feeling so fine, and I need to concentrate on my studies,” she lamented. According to the UNICAL student, all the allegations leveled against her were false and she had returned the chair and massaging machine the reverend complained about to the shrine, but he has to visit the deity to collect them. 2:1.... I've won my bet |
A lottery company, Green Lotto, has explained its decision not to pay one Sunday Nwachukwu his winning claim of N72.7 million after playing one of its games. The lottery firm said the decision was hinged on the fact that the claimant allegedly engaged in irregularities, hence he does not deserve the money in question, adding that the matter was already before a court of law, hence it will not join issues with Nwachukwu. It would be recalled that Green Lotto was dragged before the Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square over its refusal to pay Nwachukwu his winning sum of N72,200,000. Green Lotto is organised by a company, Brentwood Multiservices Global Limited based in Ikorodu, Lagos. The complainant, who testified before Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay, last Thursday, told the court that on January 29, 2021, he played a game with N330,000 and when the result came out, he won the game, but the defendants refused to pay him the winning sum. But, reacting to the accusation of Nwachukwu yesterday, the management of Green Lotto in a statement by its Head, Brand and Marketing Communications, Imoudu Asekhame, said the company does not pay fraudulent winners or encourage cheating and fraud in gaming. It is important to note that sometime in 2019, Mr Sunday Nwachukwu, won the sum of N58,800,000 (Fifty-eight Million, Eight Hundred Thousand Naira) from one of the games we offer and was duly paid his winnings despite our suspicion of some irregularities in his play.” Source: https://www.vanguardngr.com/2022/10/why-we-didnt-pay-lottery-winner-his-n72-7m-claim-green-lotto/

A Nigerian man who called out an Instagram slay queen for failing to visit him after booking a flight for her has given an update. He said that he got his lawyer involved and has reported the case to the police for them to handle appropriately. Recall that he had vowed to get her arrested if she fails to return the transport fare after she redirected the flight and went to see another guy. In a fresh video posted online, the guy said he does not want any trouble but he is willing to use police to retrieve his money. According to him, people have been advising that he uses charm, but he is a child of God and wants to resolve the matter through the legal route. He also vowed to get the money back even if he has to spend N1million on legal services and others. CorrectNG reported earlier that he said that he paid her transport fare for her to fly out to meet him but she redirected the flight to another man’s location. The guy lamented over the amount he paid as he asked if she knows how much flight costs at the moment. He issued a warning to her online and said that she has 24 hours to refund his money else he will jail her. The angry man wondered what type of women that are in the society today as he noted that she has been posting pictures with the man she went to see. He shared screenshots of her IG profile and videos of her having fun with the other guy at undisclosed locations. Green Lotto is organised by a company, Brentwood Multiservices Global Limited based in Ikorodu, Lagos. A businessman has dragged a lottery brand, Green Lotto, and its agent, Charles Akhenanen to court. The company was dragged before the Lagos State High Court sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square over its refusal to pay a businessman his winning sum of N72,700,000. Green Lotto is organised by a company, Brentwood Multiservices Global Limited based in Ikorodu, Lagos. The complainant, who testified before Justice Modupe Nicol-Clay, on Thursday, told the court that on January 29, 2021, he played a game with N330,000 and when the result came out, he won the game, but the defendants refused to pay him the winning sum. He said apart from Green Lotto, he also played another game with Premier Lotto with the sum of N200,000 on the same day and he won N48m, which he went to Ojuelegba, Surulere, to claim. The witness, who was led in evidence in chief by the state prosecuting counsel, Mrs Titilayo Olanrewaju-Daudu, said after collecting the money he won at Premier Lotto, he went to Green Lotto the next day to claim the N72,700,000 he won, but the firm refused to pay him. He said, “When I got there on Tuesday to claim the money, they said their system developed a fault and the result had wiped out. “I asked Charles, was it after the game declared the winner the machine developed a fault or before, but the defendant chased me out and I had no option than to report to the police. “Before I played that game on January 29, I had earlier played on January 26 with N50,000 or N60,000 and I lost. That isn’t my first time of playing the game with them. Sometimes I win and other times, I lose. “So, I asked Charles that the day I played N500,000 and N1m and I didn’t win, the machine did not develop a fault, but now that I won, the machine is no longer working.” While being cross-examined by the defence counsel, Adedotun Moses, the witness said he had been playing games for over 30 years. “I reported the matter at Area B, Apapa; they invited him, but he did not honour the invitation. So, Area B wrote to the lottery board and they had a series of meetings; they were asked to pay me. “They offered me N10m and I rejected it. Then, we went to the Abuja national board and they offered me N13m, but I rejected it. Then, they went to Zone 2 and pleaded that they would pay me N20m; I also refused, before the matter was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions for advice,” he added. When asked if he had won from Green Lotto before, he said, “Yes, I won in 2019; I won over N40m and they paid me.” The agent and Green Lotto were brought to court on June 6, 2022, over alleged stealing of N72,700,000. They are facing three counts of conspiracy, obtaining under false pretences and stealing, charges preferred against him by the Lagos State Government. During the arraignment, the state prosecuting counsel, Olanrewaju-Daudu, said the incident happened at 66, Agbo-Malu, Marina, Apapa. The prosecutor said on the same day, the defendants obtained the sum of N330,000 from the complainant on the pretence that he would be paid the winning money from the lottery but failed to do so. According to the prosecutor, the offences are contrary to sections 411, 314 (1) (3) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges. Justice Nicol-Clay adjourned further hearing of the case till November 21. https://www.tori.ng/amp/217685/lagos-lottery-company-dragged-to-court-for-refusin.html

Chijioke Anekpo, an Enugu-based Otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist), in this interview, speaks to PREMIUM TIMES’s Chinagorom Ugwu on practices that are harmful to the ear. PT: Can the use of earpiece and headset cause any ear problem? CHIJIOKE: Yes. It depends on the type of music and the volume that is emanating from the earpiece. Secondly, if the earpiece is dirty and not well cleaned, it can introduce infection into the ear. Generally, depending on the volume and intensity of the sound, it can damage the eardrum. So, continuous use of the headset or earpiece for a long time is not advisable, but once in a while, it can be used for just a few hours. PT: What about having soap particles or antiseptics enter the ear during baths? Does it have any effect? CHIJIOKE: It doesn’t have any effect. Water enters the ears always and goes out, including the ones containing antiseptic. There is no effect because it does not stay there for long – once you clean, the whole thing goes off. PT: How about cleaning the ear with a cotton bud? Does it pose any risk? CHIJIOKE: You don’t clean your ears at all. Naturally, ears are self-cleansing, but most people don’t know that. You don’t clean the ear from birth to the day you die. You can only clean the outer surface. But inside the ear, you are not supposed to clean. So, use of a cotton bud is needless. There is a risk in attempting to clean the ear by yourself. The cotton wool may detach and enter your ear. By the time you are trying to remove it, you may destroy your ear. So, a cotton bud has no value to the ear and whoever buys it is wasting his or her time, and resources, as well as exposing himself to possible damage to the ear. PT: Does drinking of cold water affect the throat in any way? CHIJIOKE: Consumption of cold water is not healthy, to start with. It affects the throat if you are allergic to it but if you don’t react to cold water it, there’s no risk. Generally, it doesn’t pose any problem, except for people that are allergic to it. They can get coughs and other reactions. PT: How about warm water, any side effects? CHIJIOKE: You can take warm, but not when it’s extremely warm water because it could burn your throat. It is better to take it when it’s at room temperature, not hot. PT: Shaving of hairs in the nostrils, does it pose any health problem? CHIJIOKE: That hair is protective. If you’re in a dusty area, it comes in handy. It helps to trap some particles of dust, preventing them from entering the respiratory system through the nose. So, shaving it is not advisable but you can trim it to an extent so it doesn’t cause nuisance. PT: How about nose-picking? CHIJIOKE: It can elicit bleeding. So, it’s not advisable to pick the nose. When you’re putting your hands there to scrape it, you will see some little blood vessels there that could induce bleeding. In medical terms, it is called epistaxis. So, you don’t need to pick your nose. PT: Does the prolonged use of face masks have any effect? CHIJIOKE: It depends on the type of problem one has. Someone who is asthmatic is not advised to have it on for long. The person may even die. It can reduce the rate at which such a person breathes. It can elicit some reaction, depending on the type of facemask. But ordinarily, when you put a facemask on for a long time and you are healthy, there is no problem. It depends on the state of a person’s health. Like someone who is asthmatic or has cardiac problems, putting on a facemask for a long time is not advisable. PT: Does the smoke from vehicles and firewood pose any risk to the respiratory organs? CHIJIOKE: Yes. It can affect one’s heart and lungs, depending on the quantity of smoke and how many times one is exposed to it. It’s not like if you get exposed to it once, it may not be harmful. But continuous exposure to smoke – whether from firewood or vehicles – is very risky. Generally, smoke from vehicles can kill because it is carbon monoxide and it’s dangerous to one’s blood and respiratory system.
