kitaatita:
He is gone. The principle that endeared me to Shehu Sanni dissipated when he got to the Senate and got lost in the maze. The once anti-corruptuon Shehu started following accused colleagues to court, stopped condemning corruption and became the voice of the opposition. It's electioneering season and he shouldn't expect those he vilified to thrust party machinery upon him
Which of your probuhari senators was able to expose the salaries and allowances of the senators?

Shehu sanni isn't a baby to be controlled by any allegiance that isn't on the side of the masses.

Thanks to Shehu sani's exposure we know how much the senators earn now

Drying and disinfection will help the little pig

A newborn pig is challenged in many different ways. It must stay warm, find food and fight off bacteria. These factors are also the reason why a piglet may not survive or the reason that it gets off to a bad start.

Envirogene  dries the pig and reduces harmful pathogens, and for this reason, its use around farrowing is worth a thought.

Why run the risk?

The process of drying means that the pigs do not need to use their energy on staying warm. Instead, they can use all the energy gathered from the colostrum, to grow. This makes a lot of sense, especially for the smallest pigs.

The product also doubles as a disinfectant. It protects against strep, staph, E Coli and salmonella. It protects the sensitive navels of the newborn piglets and in return they will have less of a chance to see infection and ruptures in these sensitive places.

Using Envirogene  noticeably reduces mortality rates in the farrowing pen.

The effect is both due to either fewer cold pigs or less disease pressure. But whichever the scenario, there were more weaned pigs – which is, of course, the most important factor.

Scattering Envirogene in the sleeping area of newly weaned pens of pigs adds an element of familiarity when everything else seems so
foreign to them. This familiarity can help to discourage fighting and can stimulate a
greater interest toward feed.

Also, as indicated in its farrowing room uses explained above, Envirogene's great healing properties can also be very beneficial to pigs that do sustain scratches and wounds from fighting with new pen-mates.

BENEFITS
• Drying Of Newborn Piglets

• Promotes Faster Access To Colostrum, Inducing Better And Faster Growth.

• Faster Umbilical Cord Healing

• Fly/Rat Repellent And Odour Control

• Prevents Piglet Diarrhoea

• Prevention And Treatment Of Mastitis

• Heals Wounds(castration, tail docking, FMD, foot rot etc)

• Absorbs Moisture And Prevents Growth Of Pathogenic Bacteria

• Prevents Pneumonia

AgricultureNigeria To Import US Pork --- A Very Bad Deal For Nigerian Pig Farmers by femu(op): 8:47am On May 09, 2018
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari stated his intent to remove barriers to United States agricultural products in a meeting with President Trump at the White House last week, the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) has reported.

Nigeria currently restricts imports of U.S. pork but NPPC has been working with the U.S. government to open access in Nigeria for U.S. pork and pork products.

Last summer, USMEF matched red meat exporters with buyers at the first U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) South Africa Seminar and Buyers Reception.

The event was funded by the USDA Market Access Programme, the Beef Checkoff Programme and the Pork Checkoff.
“Along with one-on-one business meetings and updates on current market conditions, USMEF staff provided technical advice and assistance to traders with an interest in putting more U.S. beef and pork in South Africa’s processing, retail and foodservice sectors,” USMEF said in a news release.
“Focus was also put on food safety and the quality and consistency of U.S. red meat products, as well as the availability of U.S. beef livers, kidneys and other beef variety meats.”

According to the release, a buyer from Nigeria attended that meeting.
“This was an opportunity to not only build and establish relationships, the event also provided valuable information for buyers in South Africa and helped reacquaint them with high-quality U.S. beef and pork,” said Dan Halstrom, USMEF senior vice president of marketing.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) didn’t have current production numbers, but it reports pigs are more widely distributed in the southern part of the humid zone in Nigeria, and in the middle belt between the humid and subhumid zones.

Africa’s pork consumption is growing, but is not yet as high as the global average, reports
PorkExpoAfrica .
“However, the growing demand for pork on the continent presents unique business opportunities. In fact, FAO estimates that the consumption of pork in Africa will grow by an average of 3.3 percent until 2050,” the organisation said.

South Africa per capita consumption of pork is estimated at about 10.58 lbs., but Nigeria’s per capita consumption of pork is 3.08 lbs., stated PorkExpoAfrica.

As incomes rise and the economy improves, Nigerian citizens will want to add more protein to their diets.
Iowa State University economist Dermot Hayes estimates that Nigeria holds significant potential for U.S. pork exports, stated NPPC.

austinomd:
Wow!

What a great read, from page 1 to 80, yea I read it all in 9 days, right from the very first post in 2014 (4 years reading experience lol) and I'm so excited, I knew it would be best to read from beginning, but seeing the number of pages involved almost discouraged me, well I'm glad I managed to read it all and I've learnt allot just from reading.

Many thanks to the originator of this post and to the many gurus too numerous to mention that have kept the thread going for 4 years I've seen allot of selfless and authentic advise here, which is not easy to come by in Nigeria, so I say all thanks to you all..

I recently started a pig farm (very small scale) at Oke Aro, reading this post through, I've come to realize I made allot of mistakes by starting with local breeds, the environment is also not standard but I was aware of that before starting, that was almost like my only option since I had a very little capital, I started on rented pens with 10 local weaners (5 male, 5 female). My intention was to use them for breeding, but all that has changed after reading through this thread, I'm not there all through as I have a small salary job from where I hope to get funds to take care of the pigs, I bought the weaners from the pen owner, so her worker takes care of them for me for a little stipend, while I visit once a week to know how they're faring.

Now I know farming local breeds isn't that profitable(wish I saw this thread before going in) its painful since I don't have much cash, but I don't want to quit, I want to make amends gradually till I'm able to get on the right track.

This is how I intend to go:
1. Buy a few better breeds of weaners (maybe 2 male and 2 female)

2. House them in a separate pen(I rented 2 rooms) so that I can get a better hygiene for them, install nipple drinkers on a plastic drum so they get clean water and all that.

Castrate all the local males I have and fatten them for sale.

3. Select 2 of the local female and use one of the better male breed to cross them for better offsprings

4. Use the remaining male to cross the 2 female for offsprings

Now here are my questions:

Is it advisable to use a better breed of male to cross the local female breed as I stated above?

Which breed can I go for if I want to cross the local female?

Presently ive spent about #12,000 on feeds for the first one month for the 10 from what I studied here that is too much, what would you advise I do to reduce cost since I'm not always physically present? I feed them Cassava peels, PKC, brewery waste and blood meal.

From my narration, what would you advise generally for me to survive this stage of the struggle?

All the gurus in the house Please kindly help a brother

@dynamix101 I understand you are also at One aro, please I'll like to hear from you and possibly meet you in person so I can gain from your wealth of experience.

Thanks, waiting to hear from you guys soon
Take time to understand the business, your environment and the market.

The breed isn't the most important factor

OlujobaSamuel:
not true, price of feeds has come down drastically, prices of farm produce is now on the low side which have impact on chicken feeds also, although the cost of production(farming) still remains the same or even higher(no govt support), however we have glut and most farmers dont have storage facility, so they have no choice but to sell at low rate.
NB: I'm involve in both crops and poultry farming.
You must be a new farmer.

In early 2015 a bag of layers Marsh was 2,200 while today it's over 3000 Naira.

Last year the price of maize was at an average of 150 though it has reduced now but soyameal today is also over 150 so what are you talking about?

Meanwhile despite all the inflation in several decades the retail price of 1 egg is yet to exceed 50 naira.

OlujobaSamuel:
Maybe you are getting a doctored report at the hq where you are, I'm currently at Igboora, some metres away from the one at Igboora, I do buy birds from them two, and I have two co-tenants living in my compound before but packed out after operations was stopped.
One works in Igboora, the other works in Igangan/Tapa side.
Before it was fully shut, i called the one in Igboora branch for birds, he said they are not having, I checked in at the branch along lag-abk road(after itori before entering abk), the gateman said I will have to come back again as no bird is on ground.
People in Igboora cant get eggs from the OFN at igboora again.
If you have a report of ongoing activities in these locations on your desk, kindly go for physical inspection as nothing is on ground.
Not surprising.

With the cost of maize and soya how do you expect poultry farms to survive?

Many poultry farms nationwide have shutdown

You can't run a business for show
