I am Norwegian born, carrying Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish blood. A cultural hybrid by design, not by confusion. I wasn’t raised with walls I was raised with borders I had to cross alone. I was emancipated and legally on my own at 13. No family. No safety net. No tribe waiting to catch me. Sent to the UK and left to figure out survival the hard way.

I have never insulted the country and i have never actually insulted the cultures. I love this country its absolutely beautiful and id give my blood to protect every inch of it. Its lies in the wedding cultures thats the problem what kind of people would lie about something so petty how 2 people choose to start a life together. The problem lies in some parts of the country where’ there’s little exposure and people see all foreigners as racist and egocentric people that take advantage of them because they are Africans…. So that’s why some people may take sides against you and begin to show aggression to you without getting to know you…
I live in the US and have friends and colleagues from different races and I understand everyone is different and should be treated individually. Some of the best help I’ve gotten career wise and professionally even came from people outside of my race when my own very Nigerians failed me….

I’d advise to make friends and network with people who ar are more exposed and you don’t need to listen to every aggression you meet online… the social media isn’t a real place .

My little girl begged to learn about her mother’s culture so she could feel proud and connected. Her mother was Yoruba, but she passed away from cancer when my daughter was 2. Now, I am married to a wonderful Igbo woman.

The heartbreaking part is that after all her hope and excitement about her mother’s side of the family, my little girl came away disgusted. Last year, she met some of her Yoruba relatives. They were abusive to her, and I had to defend her, breaking one man’s hands.

Over the past 20 years, the most frustrating change is this: before social media, weddings were genuine. Families were humble and gracious, taking the bride price with respect and gratitude because it was a fair expectation. Now, so many people lie about weddings and treat the process as a display of ego and status.

Nigeria used to feel like a safe haven for me an escape from the madness of Europe and the horrors of military life between tours. It’s heartbreaking to see how quickly social media has shifted people from being humble and welcoming to being self-centered, narcissistic, and ego-driven.
