i wonder how on earth that Some people will not mind their own business, Imagin a reporter featuring our capital in such manner. When one of Nigeria’s long line of military rulers, General Olusegun Obasanjo, seized the land on which Abuja was to be built in the late 1970s, he could hardly have imagined that the city would remain unfinished 35 years on. Abuja has a makeshift, haphazard feel to it: A place of bureaucrats and building sites, its streets eerily empty after the buzz of Lagos or the enterprising bustle of Kano. It is one of the most expensive cities in Africa, and one of the most charmless. The skyline is dominated by the space- rocket spires of the National Christian Centre and the golden dome of the National Mosque, facing each other pugnaciously across a busy highway at the city’s centre. Its other striking landmark is the vast construction site of the Millennium Tower, which, if it is ever completed, will be Nigeria’s tallest building. The skyscraper was intended to mark Abuja’s 20th birthday in 2011. Now delayed until who-knows-when, hugely over-budget and the subject of numerous official investigations. The National Mosque stands at the side of a busy road in the city centre All the people of Abuja have to show for the billions invested in the project are two stunted fingers of scaffold-clad concrete. I had been in Abuja for three days – about two-and-a-half too many – when my friend, Atta, a sociologist, picked me up from my hotel. We drove out towards Aso Rock, the monolith looming over the presidential palace. On either side of the road there are complexes of bulky, imposing mansions, most of them unfinished. Some had empty swimming pools; others had mock-Tudor timbering, but were windowless and often roofless. Atta told me that 65% of the houses in these developments were uninhabited, put up only to launder Abuja’s dirty money. Like the Millennium Tower, these grandiose schemes are ruins before they are completed, bleak monuments to a city built by kleptocratic politicians on stolen land. We pulled off the Murtala Mohammed Highway at Mpape Junction, and immediately the road deteriorated. There are many uninhabited mansions near Aso Rock “I am going to show you the real Abuja,” Atta told me, as his car struggled up a deeply-rutted dirt track. A warm wind from the desert to the north – the Harmattan – whipped clouds of red dust around us as we climbed through rocky scrubland into the hills. Mary People began to appear on the streets – men carrying ancient Singer sewing machines, women balancing baskets on their heads. We entered a vast shanty-town of shacks with corrugated iron roofs, slums stacking to the horizon. Nissan minivans scuttled past – they are called “One Chance” buses, as they barely stop on their manic journeys through these uncharted streets. Crowds thronged between skinny cows, beneath posters advertising beaming televangelists. Dance music blared out, interrupted by a muezzin’s call to prayer. Bright-eyed children kicked footballs about. This was the home of the Gwari people, the original inhabitants of the land where the capital was built. Hundreds of thousands of them were summarily evicted in the 1970s, and now scrape a living in the hills. Many of the original owners of the land around Abuja are now living in poverty Abuja is itself a Gwari word and, although the city of generals and politicians below us had barely 700,000 inhabitants, two or three million people live in these shanty towns, many of them Gwari. The Gwari people continue to fight for compensation for the land wrested from them by the Obasanjo government, land now worth more per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in Africa. We got out and walked through the smoke and dust towards a row of shacks. In one of them, a woman knelt on the ground plucking a chicken, a man above her leaning on a makeshift bar. They were Frank and Mary, Gwari people in their thirties, children of one of the thousands of families originally evicted during the foundation of Abuja. The four of us sat in the shack sipping Fantas, staring out at the swarming life of the shanty town: Motorbikes and cattle and people, all of them through a veil of reddish dust. “I trained as an architect,” Frank told me. “I have an education. But I do not have money, I don’t know the right people. So I work here with my sister. In Abuja, money defines everything.” I ask him about the empty mansions lining the roads into the city. “That is pseudo-Abuja, a false place. It’s unjust – we should be living in those houses. Instead…” He gestured to the squalid lean-to that jutted from the back of the bar. Mary looked up from her chicken. “Life here is difficult,” she says. “Often we can’t see across the street because of the smoke and dust. If it rains, you can’t move for the mud. But we pray hard.” Thick dust and smoke often fill the streets Frank pulled out a CD. It was Fela Kuti’s Suffering and Smiling. “This,” Frank said, as the music coiled out from an ancient hi-fi, “is the compressed statement of Nigerian society. We suffer, but we smile. Nothing will change until we get angry, until we stop smiling.” A storm was coming in, red clouds rolling overhead and thunder crackling down the valleys.

“We are set to commission the Omotosho Phase 2. The four turbines are contributing 500MW to the national grid. “We have completed all the test running, and we find it imperative to hand it over to government after the warranty period of a year in overseeing the plant,” Zhao-Long said. He commended the effort of the Federal Government towards ensuring the availability of stable electricity supply to Nigerians. The plant is the second of the 10 Nigerian Independent Power Projects (NIPP) under the management of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) Ltd. to be commissioned. The 10 power plants include the already commissioned 434MW Geregu II, Calabar 630MW, Egbema 378MW, Ihorvbor 504MW and Gbarain 252MW, Others are Sapele 504MW, Omoku 252MW, Alaoji 1076MW, and Olorunsogo 750MW. The project was initiated in 2004 by the then government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, under the coordination of the then Minister of Power, Liyel Imoke, now the Governor of Cross River. But the project was abandoned between 2007 and 2009 due to funding arrangements. Work resumed on Omotosho power plant project in 2010. President Goodluck Jonathan on Oct ober 4, commissioned the 434MW Geregu II plant in Kogi. With all these work We can say that this present administration are really working for the interest of It's citizens. |

Speaker of the House John Boehner walks past reporters after a meeting with House Republicans on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013 in Washington. Done deal 10/16/13 10:45 AM ByBenjy Sarlin Sixteen days and $24 billion in damage to the economy later, the House voted to end the government shutdown and raise the debt ceiling – sending a bill already approved by the Senate on to President Barack Obama, who said he plans to sign it immediately. The House voted 285 to 144 to pass the bill. The vote ends a weeks-long stalemate that began as a fight over the president’s health care law, which was barely touched in the deal passed Wednesday – a far cry from the complete defunding of the law that Republicans wanted at the start. The White House told federal workers to plan to return to work Thursday morning. “Once this agreement arrives on my desk I will sign it immediately, we will begin reopening our government immediately, and we can begin to lift this cloud of uncertainty and unease from our businesses and from the American people,” Obama said just before the House vote. Asked by a reporter as Obama walked away whether Congress would only force another shutdown in a few months when the Senate deal expires, Obama replied simply, “No.” Details of the plan were hammered out between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate. The bill will fund the government through January 15, raise the debt ceiling until February 7, and restore back pay to federal workers affected by the shutdown. It touches on Obamacare in only one minor way, by strengthening its income verification procedure for insurance subsidies, a tweak supported by the White House. The deal also sets up a budget conference between the House and Senate to work out a larger spending deal by December 13, a negotiating structure that Democrats have demanded for months. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid thanked Republicans, including Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, for striking a deal. “Averting this crisis is historic,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said. “Let’s be honest. This is pain inflicted on our nation for no good reason.” “We cannot make this mistake again as we go into the next round of negotiations,” Reid said. A strong majority of 81 senators voted for the deal; 18 opposed. Those voting “no” included Senators Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Marco Rubio, and Rand Paul, four of the most prominent Republicans who backed the defund strategy that provoked the shutdown. Boehner announced earlier in the day he believed the bill would clear the House. “The House has fought with everything it has to convince the president of the United States to engage in bipartisan negotiations aimed at addressing our country’s debt and providing fairness for the American people under Obamacare,” Boehner said in a statement. “That fight will continue. But blocking the bipartisan agreement reached today by the members of the Senate will not be a tactic for us.” Boehner’s announcement came after a brief meeting with his conference in the House basement, where participants said he was greeted with an immediate standing ovation. Despite the warm reception, his decision confirms that the party will move on from the debt ceiling and shutdown fights with no significant concessions whatsoever after they tried to defund, then delay the president’s health care law. Senate leaders Reid and Mitch McConnell announced the deal to end the shutdown and raise the debt ceiling early Wednesday afternoon in successive speeches. Removing a key obstacle to passage, Senator Ted Cruz said shortly afterwards that he would not use procedural tricks to delay a vote past the October 17 deadline to raise the debt ceiling, a move that could have put the nation at risk of default. Speaking from the Senate floor, McConnell acknowledged that his party had fallen far short of its initial goals of blocking the Affordable Care Act, but urged members to unite behind him. “Republicans remain determined to repeal this terrible law,” McConnell said in a speech from the Senate floor. “But for today… the relief we hope for is to reopen the govenrment, avoid default, and protect the historic cuts we achieved under the Budget Control Act.” Boehner’s own plan imploded Tuesday night when warring factions in his conference made a deal impossible. In a dramatic defeat, Boehner scrapped a bill that would raise the debt ceiling, end the shutdown, and secure minor changes to the Affordable Care Act. The proposal was a last-ditch plan by Boehner to end the standoff with some shred of dignity before Senate leaders reached a bipartisan deal with even more modest Obamacare changes. But House conservatives, backed by the influential Heritage Foundation, rebelled and refused to support the measure, decrying it as too weak on the president’s health care law. In the end, they lost anyway. |

Revealed: Why Jonathan Sacked Nine Ministers President Goodluck Jonathan sacked nine ministers yesterday – in a shocking move that sparked questions on the motive of the action. Five factors accounted for the ministers’ sack: According to highly-placed sources in government, some of the reasons are: non- performance; security reports on alleged corruption; political allegiance and doubtful loyalty to the President; poor management of turn-key projects; and the crisis in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). A source, who pleaded not to be named because of the “sensitivity” of the matter, said: “You will recall that the President asked the ministers to sign a performance bond. About four of the nine ministers failed to live up to expectations in the assessment of the Presidency. “In fact, three of the ministers were yet to understand their mandate after being in office for two and a half years. One of the ministers had more than 20 agencies under him but his performance was poor. “We cannot also rule out alleged corruption acts by two to three of the ministers. For instance, there is a particular outgoing minister who forced the parastatals under the ministry to buy a N17million Sports Utility Vehicle SUV for personal use. “The money-spinning parastatals were unhappy but they had to do it. It also got to a ridiculous extent that the minister was always asking for remittance of interest accruable from funds kept in some banks by parastatals under the ministry. “Another minister had problems with award of contracts, some of which were rated as inferior. The agencies supervised by the minister made a joint demand for change. “Ironically, the minister lost a plum cabinet position at a time a platform was created in a state to fight political adversaries of Jonathan. The minister was dazed when the President announced the sack.” According to a source, there was also the alleged tardiness in the award of the $1.3billion (N212billion) Zungeru Hydro Project. The Federal Government is expected to spend about N303million in generating one megawatt of electricity. The hydro project is said to be one of the most expensive in the world. “Although no corruption infraction was found against Hajiya Zainab Kuchi, she was sacrificed for not being vigilant,” the source claimed. It was also learnt that the alleged overstaying in the cabinet by the former Minister of National Planning, Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman, may have led to his exit. Another source said: “I think Shamsudeen has been in the cabinet since 2007. Though he did well in designing the Performance Benchmark for the Federal Executive Council(FEC), the nation’s planning system has not improved. “An egg-head, who is a former Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN), he may have lost his post because of difficulty in measuring his achievements which appeared to be long term. And you know, politicians have no patience for long term gains.” As at press time, political motives were being read into the sack of some of the ministers but a source in the Presidency disputed these. Some ministers were reportedly sent packing because of the rebellion of the G-7 governors in the PDP. “People alluded to this factor because some of the Ministers were nominated by their governors. Such Ministers are Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai(nominated by Governor Sule Lamido); Zainab Kuchi(by Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State); Alhaji Bukar Tijjani(from Borno now being controlled by APC without being unable to mobilise PDP to launch counter- attack),” said the source, adding: “For Shamsudeen, who was not nominated by Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, his alleged cold war with the Kano State Governor led to the factionalisation of PDP in his state. He became a political risk for Jonathan to retain him in the cabinet. “But, contrary to political permutations, some ministers from the rebellious states, like Adamawa , Rivers and Kwara, are in the cabinet because of performance without anyone touching them.” Ms Amal Pepple, who is from Rivers State, is believed to have lost her job for being unable to read the President’s mood on the crisis in the state. “Concerned about her state, Pepple recently walked up to the President, knelt down and asked him to forgive Governor Rotimi Amaechi of whatever sin the governor had committed,” the source said, adding: “Although Pepple was not nominated by Amaechi, her U-Turn made the Presidency suspicious of her loyalty. “Her innocent intervention in Rivers crisis and fact that she was also just waking up to make impact at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development cost her the job.” Ashiru’s removal was said to have shocked his colleagues. “In fact, one of the ministers almost shouted as the President was reeling out the names of those to be dropped,” the source said. He said: “There is a strong suspicion that since the Presidency was uncomfortable with ex- President Olusegun Obasanjo, who brought Ashiru into the cabinet, the minister’s days were numbered. In spite of the mediatory role of Obasanjo in PDP crisis, the position of the Presidency was that he had only attempted to clear the mess he created. Ashiru might just be a scape-goat. “As for the Minister of Environment, Hadiza Mailafia, the tempo of political situation in Kaduna requires a change of guard.” President Jonathan shocked the sacked ministers as he did not betray any emotions at the FEC meeting. A Presidency source said: “We all went in with the usual exchange of banters. The President and his deputy and a few others came late but we did not suspect anything. “After honouring a star athlete, Blessing Okagbare, we went into the business of the day with most of the nine ministers making contributions, oblivious that they would go. “As we were about to say the closing prayers, the President said: ‘I wish to inform you that some ministers will be attending this FEC meeting for the last time there will be some changes; some will be dropped.’ “A pin-drop silence overwhelmed the Executive Chambers as he was reading the names in a military fashion. “After the list was read, the Minister of Interior, Comrade Abba Moro, said the closing prayers.” |
my advise to mr president is that he should remain calm no matter the strategy employ by his opponent,mr president should remember how he came to power, almost all Nigerian were not on his side, even the people from his region were agains him,but he had just one person on his side and Dat person was God and a last with this one person he won against millions.so with that past lesson he should not trouble his heart even every body want to live the party he is affiliating to,the fact is that when the time comes We will know the real winner, please dont change your mind because of their actions because their art will make nature to bè at your side . |
bring the gal to me make i conferm oh,cos Dat story sweet oh,Abeg make una tell me again Nah |
hmmm thiss ASUU matter nawa oh,but come to think of it how much do each university in Nigeria sent to the federation account that the lecturer thinks they should be given every thing they made from schools, those guys are just there making the money into their pocket, am not insurport of the government for poor education standard in the country but the fact is that our follow nigerians are not helping matters, when the government create a standard the university stuff will dilute wit their corrupt practises. The most annoying thing here is that these lecturers are so selfish they don't even have the interest of their student at heart, how can a lecturer calls for a strike that will last for 3 month without considering what will happen to academic calender? Just because they are looking for the opportunity to go and do ther priavate business, because most of them runs priavate lecture in a different location for their interest, some of them lectures in priavate university that why they are doing what they are doing. I hate to see every body in Nigeria to wanting to share the national cake without thinking on how to bake it,every body in nigeria just want to work for themself but no body care's to work for the country, but in our antherm we all pleadge to serve the nation with all our strength, but in real life the reverse is the case if u will research this thing u will understand the the Government don't make profite in most of the establishment, but every body will claim they are serving the nation mean while they all serving themself,do u know how much it cost to build one standard university in a setuition were every body touching the project will take a share from it?then fill it with staff ?let assume that these money was borrow from any avenue with intention to pay back with interest, please sombody should tell me how much will take for the money to be reture in a setuation were every body wants to fiill his pocket?like in the case of Nigerian public servant? Please lets work in unity to build our nation not destroy it with selffishness oh... |
stop saying bubbish because dat guy has made a mistake due to certainty, now you will construct a crusific to crucify all male cook as if you ve not been seen guy who cool more dan ladies or as if u ve not been seing ladies who can't cook at all, please allow us to hear word jor, all dis big eatries and hotel we ve in d world, who cook their meal? It might be the woman's fault oh, because I ve withness a case like dat, were a wife brought people to beat the husband up,and pack all her properties and that of the husband to her family compound, we thought that, that was the end of the union but few week later the man went back to beg the wife and the wife was claiming hard,so the man had to carry other people to help him out which they did and the woman came back to dat compound after all that she did.so sometime love can humiliate a man to the lowest point of life, most if d man is dat calculating, you don't ve the to blamb the man for his action cos some sillent people are very bad in anger so in order for him not to cause complicating issue that will make an head line in nigeria news paper like a man kill his pragnant wife, and end up in jail he has to look for alternative B.beside every body are not d same, what u can condole I may not b able to do so and vise versa |
I would have love to say something, but I will not say anythhing before my ogar at the top will say a different thing,so is left for my ogar at the top. |
mr Ameachi life is not all abt ranting in thing that are not necessary, life is a game of law and principle, to remain in a position of life u must use ur head, wen u break the law of power you must hide urslf and try to rearange, instead of making noice that will not count, and there is sometin u must remember that NGF chairman is not ur birth right,so before u implicate yourslf d more, you beter be wise and use ur head, stop making fire dat will consume u at last.enough of acusation that will not help you.what do u want us to do? Because he has seen mr Good man he now want to show dat he now knows how to talk, please help me tell him that we still love mr president even if he is incompetent,so leave him for us we love him that weak and we hate you that strong nigeria is too fragile for your iron hand. |
