It’s now easier than ever to visit distant locations around the world. Some places, however, are best avoided due to dangerous conditions. Certain dangerous places, on the other hand, are also desirable tourist destinations. If you do decide to visit such places, you should at least be aware of the risks and take sensible precautions. Here, in descending order, are the 10 most dangerous cities in the world. 10. Caracas, Venezuela This is the capital city of Venezuela and it is presently facing a crisis involving drug gangs. Street crimes such as muggings and theft are also common, making this an undesirable destination for most tourists. Many other cities in Venezuela also have high crime rates. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/400x400xCaracas-Venezuela-400x400.jpg.pagespeed.ic.7JG1xO87In.jpg 9. Ciudad Juarez, Mexico Mexico’s problems with drug traffickers are well known and Ciudad Juarez is one of the nation’s most violent cities right now. Police are often employed or paid off by drug gangs, which means that many crimes go unpunished. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/400x400xCiudad-Juarez-Mexico-400x400.jpg.pagespeed.ic.NrENGPV5p0.jpg 8. Cape Town, South Africa Due to the prevalence of poverty and social unrest in this city, it is suffering from an extremely high crime rate. Although many tourists are drawn to South Africa because of its natural beauty and proximity to nature preserves and other attractions, Cape Town can be a dangerous place. It is possible to enjoy a visit to this city if you avoid the more dangerous sections and don’t travel alone at night. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/400x400xCape-Town-South-Africa-400x400.jpg.pagespeed.ic.WpZoXqo-9h.jpg 7. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Many cities in Brazil have very high crime rates, and some are more dangerous than Rio de Janeiro. Yet since Rio is by far the most popular tourist destination in Brazil, it’s worth focusing on here. Rio is actually safer than it was a decade ago, but street crimes are still common in many areas, especially at night. It’s possible to enjoy the resorts and beaches of this city, but common sense precautions should be taken. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/400x400xRio-de-Janeiro-Brazil-400x400.jpg.pagespeed.ic.gvF7bLSDJN.jpg 6. Guatemala City, Guatemala Although Guatemala, a Central American nation on the Caribbean, has many tourist attractions, it’s a nation that is plagued with drug violence. It has a high murder rate and other common crimes include street robberies, bus holdups and carjackings. It’s advisable if visiting Guatemala to remain in safer regions and avoid Guatemala City. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/400x400xGuatemala-City-Guatemala-400x400.jpg.pagespeed.ic.GiChX1vCKO.jpg 5. Acapulco, Mexico Not long ago, this city was considered a safe and luxurious resort area. While tourism to Acapulco is still popular, drug violence has now made this into a dangerous area. Recent statistics reveal that this city has one of the world’s highest murder rates -142 per 100,000 people. People visiting Acapulco are advised to remain on the property of the resorts where they are staying, as most of the crime occurs in surrounding areas. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/400x400xAcapulco-Mexico-400x400.jpg.pagespeed.ic.ZGd0WQX2cX.jpg 4. Baghdad, Iraq Bombings, gunfire and other violent events are common in Iraq. This country has been on the “do not travel” list for Americans for many years and Baghdad remains a dangerous place. The future of Iraq is extremely uncertain as U.S. troops are departing from the country. This is another war- torn country that is not likely to be safe anytime soon. Since the violence in Baghdad usually consists of unpredictable outbreaks of terrorism, it’s not a place that people should visit without a good reason. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/400x400xBaghdad-Iraq-400x400.jpg.pagespeed.ic.fz7y6Ge8Rf.jpg 3. Kabul, Afghanistan This has been one of the most dangerous cities in the world for some time. It is still a war zone, although U.S. troops are gradually being removed from the country. Terrorist attacks, including many bombings are common. Kabul is facing a very uncertain future and will probably be a very dangerous place for the foreseeable future. Like Baghdad, Kabul is a city where violence can occur at any time. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/400x400xKabul-Afghanistan-400x400.jpg.pagespeed.ic.QCzI0IABBK.jpg 2. Karachi, Pakistan Pakistan is experiencing a great deal of political unrest, and crime as well as terrorism is rampant. Assassinations are common, as well as suicide bombings and gang warfare. Karachi is one of the centers of this violence and tourists are advised to avoid this city. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/400x400xKarachi-Pakistan-400x400.jpg.pagespeed.ic.nt1AbqI-EX.jpg 1. San Pedro Sula, Honduras This city has ranked as one of the world’s most violent for several years now. According to many sources, it has the highest homicide rates in the world -169 per 100,000 people. Arms trafficking is a big problem, and illegal firearms are prevalent throughout the city. This is a city that tourists would do well to avoid. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/400x400xSan-Pedro-Sula-Honduras-400x400.jpg.pagespeed.ic.Q7pzTnoa_O.jpg |

There’s something eerily beautiful about the ruins of these old churches which were all abandoned and forgotten for various reasons. Some played important historical roles during times of war and civil unrest, while others depict the challenges and hardships faced by our modern world. Now, all that remains of these architectural wonders are parts of the physical structures which provide a strange and fascinating look into what once existed. 1. Geamăna, Romania The village of Geamăna Romania was destroyed when the valley was flooded by polluted water from a nearby open copper mine. Today the ruins of the village church stand straight out of the toxic red colored waters. https://www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Geamăna-Romania-580x360.jpg 2. Yaropolets, Russia The Kazan Theotokos Church, though now a guarded abandoned site is still the only Russian double-domed church which was built by the Russian Count and military General Zakhar Chernyshev https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/580x360xYaropolets-Russia-580x360.jpg.pagespeed.ic.S0S0cQ4kXX.jpg 3. Caen, France The beautiful ruins of the St-Etienne-le-Vieux Church still stand in Caen France Today. The church and much of the city were destroyed during The Battle of Normandy in World War II. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/580x360xCaen-France1-580x360.jpg.pagespeed.ic.fpcEduKkvx.jpg 4. Rome, Italy The ruins of the Church of San Bonaventura stand on what was once the village of Monterano in Rome. The village and sadly its occupants were set on fire by the French Army during a brutal and unexpected attack at the end of the 18th century. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/580x360xMonterano-Rome-580x360.jpg.pagespeed.ic.pRbtIScXYo.jpg 5. Detroit, Michigan The city of Detroit was once the 10th largest city in the United States, but due to job losses and many residents vacating, the city suffered an economic crisis and was forced to file for bankruptcy in 2013. Today many of the cities buildings are abandoned. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/580x360xDetroit-Michigan-580x360.jpg.pagespeed.ic.t7SX-0K25X.jpg 6. Ross Island, India Ross Island, part of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands of India was held under British occupation and used as a seat of power for the British during World War II. In 1941, an earthquake shook the island causing damage and also resulted in the eventual abandonment of this site. Today many ruins remain of the once lavish buildings including the church. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/580x360xRoss-Island-India-580x360.jpg.pagespeed.ic.E5djvEjt3c.jpg 7. Coimbra, Portugal The Portuguese Monastery of Santa Clara-a-Velha was built in the 14th century on the Mondego River in the city of Coimbra. The building had to be abandoned in the 17th century due to repeated flooding. Today the church has been restored and is open to visitors looking to see a glimpse of it’s beautiful past. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/580x360xCoimbra-Portugal-580x360.jpg.pagespeed.ic.5HZQygaXgD.jpg 8. Bodie, California The town of Bodie in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountain range boomed after gold was first discovered in 1876 and the town boomed during this rush from 1877-1880. However, like most gold rush towns, all good things must come to an end and Bodie was no different. The decline started in the early 1900′s and it’s now an abandoned ghost town with many structures like the church still standing reminding us of its once glorious past. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/580x360xBodie-California-580x360.jpg.pagespeed.ic.iDkASWEsEO.jpg 9. St. George’s, Bermuda The Unfinished Church sits as a reminder of what never came to be in the small town of St. George’s on Bermuda’s northeast end. Construction on this site began in 1874 after the existing church was damaged ‘beyond repair’ by a storm. Construction was quickly halted after a decision to repair the original church instead of building a new one and in 1926 a storm destroyed much of what construction had been done on the ‘Unfinished Church’. Today the site is part of the St. Georges UNESCO World Heritage Site. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/580x360xSt.-Georges-Bermuda-580x360.jpg.pagespeed.ic.Jpz4Nr0J2Z.jpg 10. Dumfries, Scotland The beautiful ruins of Lincluden Collegiate Church sit on the northern outskirts of Dumfries Scotland. Founded circa 1160, this relic was later abandoned in 1700 and today the remains are a heritage protected building which can still be visited by the public. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/580x360xDumfries-Scotland-580x360.jpg.pagespeed.ic.dc3tSXOxN0.jpg 11. Gary, Indiana Once a booming steel town and birth place of the Jackson 5 musical group, this town near Chicago Illinois has seen hard times as a result of the steel industry which the city was built on. In 2013 an estimated one third of all homes were reportedly unoccupied or abandoned as are many public buildings like the city’s Methodist Church featured below. https://www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/Gary-Indiana-resized.jpg 12. Ani, Turkey Ani was once the capital city of the medieval Armenian Kingdom that covered much of what is now Armenia and Eastern Turkey. Between 961 – 1045 it played an important role as it stood on many trade routes and its building were considered some of the most technologically and artistically advanced in the world. Ani was later abandoned during the 16th and 17th centuries but remnants of this ‘City of 1001 Churches’ still remain today including the Church of the Redeemer seen below. https://1-ps.googleusercontent.com/x/m.escapehere.com/www.escapehere.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/08/580x360xAni-Turkey-580x360.jpg.pagespeed.ic.jQhvuQIMik.jpg |

New York City F.C. are bound to take on a handful of Manchester City youth players in their inaugural season. Is Kelechi Iheanacho one of them? According to AfricanFootball.com, sources close to “a top Manchester City official” say the U-20 Nigerian international is an NYCFC loan target. “Kelechi’s profile has shot up since what he achieved in pre-season in the United States of America,” African Football reports. “As a result of this, many other clubs are keen to have him and Manchester City are expected to soon decide where he will go to on loan. While NYCFC are a leading candidate, several other p teams are in the running for his services —including an option in Belgium. Iheanacho, 17, will turn 18 in October. He was the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup MVP while representing Nigeria, earning the Silver Boot as the second highest goalscorer and the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament. He was awarded the CAF Most Promising Talent of the Year award for his accomplishments and is considered one of the next great emerging African talents. Iheanacho has also scored three times during City’s tour of the United States, raising his domestic profile. That success has forced City to keep him with the club despite being called up by his country for the coming AYC qualifier against Lesotho. “Kelechi was to have been released by Manchester City at least a week before the match, but the club’s recruitment officer has called us back to say they have plans for him and so he will no longer be available,” Flying Eagles coach Manu Garba told AfricanFootball.com This is the second Manchester City youth player connected to NYCFC in recent months. http://www.empireofsoccer.com/manchester-kelechi-iheanacho-27994/ |
