Politics › Re: Hilary Clinton Says President Jonathan Has Breed Massive Corruption In Nigeria by fistonati(m): 12:42pm On Dec 22, 2014 |
faragai24: MR NO SHOES YOU ARE GONE, DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THIS OYINBO.
Mrs. Hillary Clinton, the former US Secretary of State in separate events in New York City said the Nigerian government under President Goodluck Jonathan, squandered its oil resources, and indirectly helps corruption to fester in the troubled country.
Legislators on Capitol Hill have also called for the United States to do more to help the Nigerian government.
Clinton also blasted wider decisions made by the Nigerian government during the public interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts.
“Nigeria has made bad choices, not hard choices” Clinton said, parroting the name of her forthcoming memoir.
“They have squandered their oil wealth, they have allowed corruption to fester and now they are losing control of parts of their territory because they wouldn’t make hard choices.”
In late April, heavily armed Islamic militants stormed a girl’s dormitory at the Government Girls Secondary School in the Nigerian town of Chibok. Upwards of 270 students were kidnapped and days later, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau said in a video statement that he planned to sell them into slavery. More than 50 got away and the remaining are the subject of the search.
The kidnappings quickly gained international attention by using the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls. The hashtag has been used to update people on the state of the search, but also to criticize the Nigerian government for their handling of the kidnapping.
The Nigerian government has defend its handling of the matter.
The former secretory of state strengthened her criticism of the Nigerian government later in the night at the International Crisis Group’s annual award dinner.
“The Nigerian government has failed to confront the threat or to address the underlying challenges,” Clinton said of the kidnappings. “Most of all, the government of Nigeria needs to get serious about protecting all of its citizens… and ensuring the every child has the right and opportunity to go to school.”
Standing in front of high profile financiers and donors at the opulent Waldorf Astoria, Clinton went on to urge Nigerian citizens to hold their leaders accountable and implored religious leaders, Nigeria’s neighbors, the African Union and the international community to continue to stay involved in finding the schoolgirls.
“Every asset and expertise should be brought to bear,” Clinton said. “Everyone needs to see this for what it is, it is a gross human rights abuse but it is also part of a continuing struggle within Nigeria and within North Africa.”
In addition to addressing the situation in Nigeria, Clinton used much of her speech to discuss her record at state and particularly highlighted her work in opening the government of Burma. Republicans have criticized Clinton for what they say is a lack of notable accomplishments as America’s top diplomat.
While Wednesday’s comments were Clinton’s first statements about the kidnappings, the former first lady has joined in on the social media campaign, too.
Clinton has joined in on the social media campaign, too.
“Access to education is a basic right & an unconscionable reason to target innocent girls. We must stand up to terrorism. #BringBackOurGirls,” she tweeted on May 4.

Programming › Re: Bash Shell Vulnerability Affects Linux, Unix And Mac OS X by fistonati(m): 11:09pm On Sep 26, 2014 |
Enouwem:
A Critical remotely exploitable vulnerability has been discovered in the widely used Linux and Unix command-line shell, known as Bash , aka the GNU Bourne Again Shell, leaving countless websites, servers, PCs, OS X Macs, various home routers, and many more open to the cyber criminals. Earlier today, Stephane Chazelas publicly disclosed the technical details of the remote code execution vulnerability in Bash which affects most of the Linux distributions and servers worldwide. REMOTELY EXPLOITABLE SHELLSHOCK The vulnerability (CVE-2014-6271) affects versions 1.14 through 4.3 of GNU Bash and being named as Bash Bug, and Shellshock by the Security researchers on the Internet discussions. According to the technical details, a hacker could exploit this bash bug to execute shell commands remotely on a target machine using specifically crafted variables. “In many common configurations, this vulnerability is exploitable over the network, ” Stephane said. This 22-year-old vulnerability stems from the way bash handles specially-formatted environment variables, namely exported shell functions. When assigning a function to a variable, trailing code in the function definition will be executed. BASH BUG AFFECTS MILLIONS OF SYSTEMS While bash is not directly used by remote users, but it is a common shell for evaluating and executing commands from other programs, such as web server or the mail server. So if an application calls the Bash shell command via web HTTP or a Common-Gateway Interface (CGI) in a way that allows a user to insert data, the web server could be hacked. In Simple words, If Bash has been configured as the default system shell, an attacker could launch malicious code on the server just by sending a specially crafted malicious web request by setting headers in a web request, or by setting weird mime types. Proof-of-concept code for cgi-bin reverse shell has been posted on the Internet. Similar attacks are possible via OpenSSH, “We have also verified that this vulnerability is exposed in ssh—but only to authenticated sessions. Web applications like cgi- scripts may be vulnerable based on a number of factors; including calling other applications through a shell, or evaluating sections of code through a shell.” Stephane warned. But if an attacker does not have an SSH account this exploit would not work. This is a serious risk to Internet infrastructure, just like Heartbleed bug, because Linux not only runs the majority of the servers but also large number of embedded devices, including Mac OS X laptops and Android devices are also running the vulnerable version of bash Software. NIST vulnerability database has rated this vulnerability “10 out of 10” in terms of severity. HOW TO CHECK FOR VULNERABLE SHELL To determine if a Linux or Unix system is vulnerable, run the following command lines in your linux shell: env X="() { :;} ; echo shellshock" /bin/sh -c "echo completed" env X="() { :;} ; echo shellshock" `which bash` -c "echo completed" If you see the words "shellshock" in the output, errrrr… then you are at risk. BASH BUG PATCH You are recommended to disable any CGI scripts that call on the shell, but it does not fully mitigate the vulnerability. Many of the major operating system and Linux distribution vendors have released the new bash software versions today, including: Red Hat Enterprise Linux (versions 4 through 7) and the Fedora distribution CentOS (versions 5 through 7) Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, 12.04 LTS, and 14.04 LTS Debian If your system is vulnerable to bash bug, then you are highly recommended to upgrade your bash software package as soon as possible. Business › Re: CBN, Western Union Launch Foreign Remittance Service by fistonati(m): 8:02am On Aug 20, 2014 |
atlwireles: The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in collaboration with Western Union Company and First Bank Plc, on Friday, launched out-bound remittance service to enable Nigerians to transfer money around the world.
At the ceremony in Abuja, CBN Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said that the project was in line with the bank’s policy to transform payment landscape in Nigeria.
Emefiele said that the initiative was targeted at remittances by individuals to dependants, including children, leaving abroad and for other person-to-person needs.
He said that the system would also simplify money transfer process in Nigeria.
“Western Union Company is well known as international electronic payment transfer service provider with a wide range of products and global coverage.
“Since the commencement of the inward money transfer service in 1995, which was pioneered by this same company, the payment landscape in Nigeria has significantly transformed,’’ he said.
The CBN boss said that in-bound money transfer services had been in operation in Nigeria, and were dominated by Western Union, Royale Finance and Moneygram.
“Today, out-bound money services is being launched to provide an alternative channel of foreign exchange transfer to serve the needs of small foreign exchange end users .
“Simultaneously, it reduces the foreign exchange sourced from official foreign exchange window in Nigeria and to a large extent, helps to conserve our foreign exchange,’’ he said.
He explained that under the initiative, a prospective customer, who wished to use the service, would only pay Naira equivalent to the money transfer operators for the foreign currency that would be paid to the specified beneficiary abroad.
According to him, this will end the idea of going to the Bureau de Change or banks to buy foreign currency before transferring money abroad.
“If you have need to make payment to your children, brothers and sisters living abroad that need small financial support, all you need to do is to take your cash to any of the 5,000 Western Union outlets in Nigeria.
“We are working very hard to ensure that the number of outlets increases further from 5,000.
“We have also agreed with Western Union about the need for them to work with Bureau de Change (BDC) operators that are well structured,” he said.
Emefiele said that apex bank was also working hard to make the BDC business robust for operators in the sector.
He said that the out-bound transfer service would only be conducted by international monetary service operators, adding that banks and BDCs that met the new CBN requirements would serve as agents for money transfer service.
He stated that bank accounts were not required to transfer funds and that transactions point would be within the reach of customers.
“We will allow cash, but going forward, we will discuss with operators of mobile telephones so that those on the mobile payment platform can transfer money from their accounts via western union to anybody abroad.
“These are some of the efforts we are making because we are embracing cashless transactions,’’ he said.
Emefiele, however, disclosed that CBN had put measures in place to check foreign currency being taken out of the country, saying that the step would help to manage the nation’s foreign reserve.
He said that guidelines on the measure will soon be released.
He said that the apex bank had been working with relevant agencies to look at reasons for movement of cash out of the country.
He urged stakeholders to use all the channels available to transfer money and avoid carrying of foreign currency out of the country.
Emefiele explained that CBN had increased the allowable limit for credit and debit cards from 40,000 dollars to 450,000 dollars per annum.
He assured that the CBN would continue to provide effective leadership in the payment system transformation in line with the aspirations of the Federal Government.

Health › Re: US Commends Nigeria As Four More Ebola Patients Are Discharged by fistonati(m): 2:15pm On Aug 19, 2014 |
inteli: The US government has commended the Nigerian government and its health authorities for their handling of the Ebola virus since it broke in Lagos last month.
The US’ commendation came on the back of more good news yesterday that four more patients who had contracted the disease had been discharged and declared free of the infectious disease.
With their discharge, this brings the total number of people who have been given the all clear to five. A total of 12 people were struck with the virus in Nigeria, including the index case Patrick Sawyer, of which four have died, five have been discharged while three remain in the isolation ward at the Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba, Lagos.
However, all hopes that the US would send the ZMapp experimental drug to Nigeria were dimmed yesterday when the US government ruled out the possibility, saying there were insufficient quantities of the drug available. Making this known when he visited the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, in Abuja, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, informed reporters that what was needed was to focus primarily on isolation and the screening of patients or those suspected to have contracted the virus.
According to Entwistle: “We’ll see down the road what is possible. But there are no huge quantities now. And we think the focus now needs to be on exactly what you are doing: the isolation wards, screening, and especially important that now your government is doing a very good job on this, that is contact tracing.” The envoy said he just came back from the US late last week, adding, “I was in Washington, of course, for the US-African Leaders Summit and I came over to see the minister right away as soon as I got back into town to discuss our anti-Ebola cooperation.
“I was in the room in Washington when Vice President (Joe) Biden and President (Goodluck) Jonathan talked about the Ebola crisis, talked about our partnership, and pledged the total cooperation between your government and my government on this issue.
“So I just came over to see the minister this morning to talk to him about that and you’ve all seen the headlines over the weekend. This is an issue where we have to keep working hard. It may last for a while but there are some encouraging signs.
“The Emergency Operation Centre (EOC), I understand, is working well. The isolation ward, I understand, is working well. So this is an example we have, as part of the broad partnership between our two countries, just keep collaborating and cooperating and keep working hard.”
While commending Nigeria for effectively curtailing the spread of the Ebola virus, Entwistle stated: “I noticed that when I flew back on Thursday night into this country, before I left the plane, I filled out a questionnaire. “I was very impressed because I even had to put my seat number which is a very good idea. So if you ever have to trace the guy sitting next to me you know where I am. So I have been impressed by these things and I encourage the government of Nigeria to keep at it as I know they will.
“I always say we have a broad partnership between our two countries which means we do things together as equals to make the world a better place. I can’t think of a more important example today than our Ebola cooperation.”
Chukwu, on his part, said the visit came at the right time considering the need for collaboration between the two countries, specifically on the Ebola virus. Chukwu said as the representative of the US government, the envoy will assist in various ways in the prevention of the virus from spreading further.
The minister referred to the US ambassador as the spokesperson for the US government in Nigeria, adding, “So he came to me as the chief public health officer of the country, because that is what the Minister of Health is, to exchange views with me on the collaboration with America.
Four Patients Discharged
The minister also disclosed that four additional patients were yesterday discharged and declared free of the infectious disease. In a statement in Abuja, Chukwu said the development was a good omen for Nigeria, taking into cognisance the devastation the virus had caused in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. . . http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/ebola-us-commends-nigeria-as-four-more-patients-are-discharged/186725/ The USA knows our potential, jst dt dey tot wen won't realise it on d Ebola Virus dts why dey tink we wil cum begging dem for d Ebola cure.
With the current euphoria about BBM on Android and Iphone. New users are now in ecstasy and enjoying BBM Live on their devices.
I am also one of them but despite this euphoria a lot of questions have been bugging my mind and I think it is important that I ask them because I dont have answers to them:
(1). I hope that I can keep my BB Pin even if I change my Android phone. This was one of the reasons why I did not have a BB phone because you have to get a new Pin anytime you get a new phone which is like changing your home or office address every six months. I feel your BB Pin should be part of your identity just like your phone numbers and your name.
(2). Now that Android phones and Iphones officially have a kind of Blackberry feature in them I think it is also wise that our Nigerian network providers should also make internet plans on these devices very affordable and pocket friendly. Just like the Blackberry plans. Or what do you think?
(3). What is the future of other mobile IM services like WhatsApp, WeChat, Viber etc. Especially WhatsApp?.
Something tells me that if WhatsApp does not step up its game soon, they could well have an exodus on their hands.
These are my questions for now. Feel free to enlighten me and you may also ask your own questions.[/quote
Has Android considered user's back up? I mean something in form BB Desktop manager. Cus users wil need to back up their contacts t be fully safe. |
