Nonso23: Hi Everyone,
I am currently an engineering student in a Nigerian university and would like to get information on the possibility of interning in the states during my 4th year. Also I would appreciate any additional information on the requirements and other necessary conditions to be fulfilled by any aspiring intern.
Should any other information be required to enable a more detailed response I will be glad to provide on request.

How about rocking bow ties to interviews? Is it cool?

Will also like to know whether bow ties can be used on all occasions or certain occasions.

Thanks in advance

you do not Rock a bow tie to work not to talk of an Interview, you only wear it to cocktail parties.
I don't think it is also appropriate(maybe not cool) for church

I think some of you are missing the issue here. Having bosoms at 11 should not be the case. Some of my friends matured at 9 while stil in primary school so her case should not be different.
She has a mature face. She could be 13 or 14 but not 11.

conyema12: TOEFL score = 92 at least I exceeded my requirement..
GRE = beware cos am going to crack you soon after that terrible performance.
Gradually we are getting there....

One funny thing happened the day I was writing my TOEFL in Owerri. One lady in her middle 20s was also writing on that same center. But in the middle of the test She started crying because she is not computer literate and thus could not take the Test. I was like why is babe a distraction, the ETS invigilators should do some thing fast so that I can concentrate. But the situation worsened when she mistakenly ended her test... Oh boy come and see wailing!!.. in fact was dragged out of the exam hall. For me I was completely indifferent cos i needed concentration to justify that 45k i paid an agent (cos of late registration shaa). In all am glad at my score despite her disturbance.

Where exactly in owerri did you do ur test?

greatgod2012: Kate Henshaw of course, so matured, i love this woman!
Mature with the exposure of thighs. NO No, what's the difference between her and the woman who opened her wares for all to see.
All nå opening, so is trash. If I dress like this in my teens and early adulthood, will never want to be caught in this body hugging cloth in my 30s or 40s. #trashplease.
God have mercy. No mediocrity!!

how much does it cost to get an engineering degree from havard and what financial aid is available for a Nigerian Immigrant?
With good GRE scores, you're considered for a scholarship together with your application in some schools. You can get assistantship(GÅ or RA) or fellowship which invariably means partial tuition or full tuition waiver. Why do you consider FA ås only student loans. C'mon they give scholarship to International students too. Why are you neglecting it?.
If it were that cheap, you won't have studied here if you actually did.

Yes it takes ability to make it into harvard. But this shouldn't be story worthy from a public servant. . You won't see anyone celebrating David Camerons children going to harvard because great britian has equally capable schools in oxford and cambridge. You won't see anyone celebrating the obama kids going to oxford or cambridge when you have the worlds best schools in the US, or as a US leader you are expected to evoke that sentiment. Ngozi Okonji Iweala, as with so many Nigerian leaders who pay lip service to change, are all hypocrites in my opinion.
True.

Impressive!!

However, I just can't get my head around the number of people viewing this thread, Nigerians and you lot's innate over-gratification of paper qualifications.

Their mum graduated magna cum laude from the same Harvard and held an impressive portfolio at World Bank, but she has been a failure of epic proportions at transferring all that over-bloated CV into real life situations, despite being in-charge of the country's finances for more than 10 years combined now. I just hope they're different from their mum.

It's high time you lot started gratifying shakers and problem solvers, and not just having low self-esteem about paper qualifications. undecided undecided

I'm glad they all graduated from Harvard, but getting admission into Harvard isn't that hard as you speculate, maybe for arts and humanity majors. As for engineers, MIT, Caltech, etc. are way more competitive.
Chai, you have a typical Nigerian mentality.
It's easier to get into Absu medical school, try unilag or UI and see if you'll enter. Like the person whom you earlier quoted, it's about one's abilities not necessarily money or academic qualities(tho is part). One can be admitted into Harvard and obtain some form of financial Aid. There's nothing like if its education, or Engineering. You have not heard of Harvard business, medical or law school eh.
This comparison you brought up is not necessary. None of them studied Engineering, i'm sure they would have gone to the very best.

Johns Hopkins is actually ranked #1 in public health in the US as against Harvard at #3 but then it's more expensive (I think) and it offers less financial aid ( at least to international students).

doctor234: Had my interview this morning at V.I, 10.30 appointment. I was anxious as I had been refused Immigrant visa before as a 12 year old. I was also going it with a substantial amount of loan from the school and a little scholarship, no personsal or family funding!
Inteview went like------

Me (with a well practiced smile):- Good morning madam
VO:- Hello good morning. Could you pass your documents?
Me:- Here they are. She suddenly starts scrolling through the computer for what looked like eternity and I was scared she was checking the details of the previous application.
Vo:- So what are you going to do in the US
Me:- To pursue a masters degree in Public health at Harvard University
Vo:- That's good. so why Public Health.
Me:- (I smiled as I had memorised one answer I saw on nairaland) It is the science and art of preventing disease, blah blah. As a Doctor I dont want to cure patients alone, I want to help in disease prevention in Nigeria blah blah
Vo:- (Lookin impressed with my last answer) So how did you come across the school?
Me:- I did a lot of my research on the internet and also my school professor (the dean of public health) who is also my mentor helped in finding the right schools (formatting!!!)
Vo:- did you apply to any other schools
Me:- Yes I did, Was accepted at John Hopkins, Emory, UNC, Harvard
Vo:- So how did you choose, never mind, ( with a wide grin! ) I guess you chose the best school
Me:- (Smiling back) Yes, I did
Vo:- Did you write GRE
Me:- I wrote GRE (Trying to bring it out)
Vo:- Dont worry, I dont need it. So how do you intend to pay for your school fees (packing my documents together)
Me:- I got full funding from the university in forms of loans and scholarship
Vo:- (Picking the popular white paper I've been hoping to get) You can pick up your visa and other documents at Ikeja on friday.
Me:- Thank you ma
Vo:- You're welcome. Have fun at Harvard!
I packed my sack of documents and left ( Of all the people that came today I probably brought the biggest load of documents because of my past denial record but wasnt ask for any except the regular 4/5)
I heaved a sigh of relief and said Thank you Jesus.

Lessons learned:
1) God's time is the best, keep comitting your plans to him, if you are meant to travel out, you'll go at the right time. If not try and make sense in 9ja
2) There is a bias towards Popular and highly ranked schools, even though they wont admit it, pls choose your schools wisely
3) If you're computer literate, dont use an agent for your school runs and application process, learn on the job with the help of anybody that has gone through the process. A guy didnt even know abt the sevis receipt because agent just pack everything give am! ( He was denied, reasons unknown though)
4) Prepare for the interview, nairaland was very helpful. There wasnt a question asked that i hadnt prepare to answer, even the stance, the smiles, the confident look. Just give it your best, because he no easy to spend one year preapare make dem come go deny you visa in 5mins.

Dats all!!!!:-)

Congratulobia!!
Me: you got an accept at Johns hopkins, why didn't you go there?
House: Boston or Baltimore, maryland?
You: your answer(s) please?

22 JUNE 2013

TODAY'S WORD FOR TODAY

GOD IS COMMITTED TO YOU

‘…So we might be the most important of all the things he made.’

James 1:18

22 06 2013.

Be careful around people who don’t value themselves, because they’re incapable of valuing you. Look for those who enhance you, not inhibit you, who fertilise your mind and fortify your faith. When you’re around them, you’ll see your best qualities mirrored, and be nurtured by the words that come from their lips. When you encounter somebody who says you have nothing to offer, be sure to laugh - it’s impolite to hear a joke and not laugh. When God made you He stepped back and said, ‘That’s very good’ (Genesis 1:31). So stop entertaining contrary opinions. You have so much potential that the word ‘possibility’ is written all over you. By God’s grace you can be everything He desires. ‘God decided to give us life through the word of truth, so we might be the most important of all the things he made.’ You say, ‘But I’ve so many regrets.’ If you’ve repented and learned from them, get your eyes on the future! God’s love isn’t based on your performance. He didn’t pick you because of your virtues. ‘While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us’ (Romans 5:8 NKJV). He’s the God of second chances, and third ones too. Paul writes, ‘There has never been the slightest doubt in my mind that the God who started this great work in you would keep at it and bring it to a flourishing finish’ (Philippians 1:6 TM). The God who brought you this far will take you the rest of the way - He’s committed to you. Just make sure you’re committed to Him.

Thanks. You can get any school if you package your application materials well. JHSPH was actually my first choice but I didnt accept the admission because the fees are way too high and they dont fund International students like Harvard, Tulane, Boston and Drexel Schools of PH do. MDs have an advantage, but almost any field can be considered for the MPH if you show enough purpose.
Thanks for your reply. Yeah the tuition is on the high side. Don't they provide GÅ or RA position, saw something on alfred sommer's scholarship.
I'm just being ambitious, when I get to that stage, will surely look at these schools you 've mentioned.I hope to work hard for JHSPH because I require two to three years experience to be eligible for an MPH. So page #bookmarked. Thanks

Do I still need to provide sponsor or personal financial documents and if I have to, should it cover the cost of study. Thanks
Congrats, HARVARD yoooooo!!
I'm doing an UG in PH, would want JHSPH for my PG. So did you consider it and which other school(s) did you apply?
I've come to observe that most international students for PH in ivy leagues are MDs, I hope someone like me has a chance to walk in.
I'm trying to be at my best in school, so when I get to that level i'l cross by the grace of God.
