Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), would pose a challenge to Bola Tinubu’s bid for the presidency, according to a lawmaker elected over the weekend on the APC platform.

The lawmaker told Sun, under the condition of anonymity, that churches and young people across had embraced Obi very well.

He added that the APC might not win Lagos State if the rising popularity of Obi did not wane.

The congressman claimed that Atiku Abubakar, the PDP’s presidential nominee, might possibly lose the South-East and South-South to Obi.

He stated, “A Muslim-Muslim ticket might cost the APC the entire South. Today, the APC is unable to win any South East or South South state. The APC won’t prevail in Lagos State if elections were held right now. The party might succeed in Ekiti and Ogun if it’s fortunate. The PDP is going up against the APC in Osun, Ondo, and Oyo. The APC’s options are so constrained.

In 2023, President Muhammadu Buhari won’t be up for election. That indicates that Atiku will be the North’s top pick. In the Northeast, Atiku will triumph. Due to the significant Hausa and Fulani populations there, he will also triumph in the North West.

“North Central is where the PDP’s core foot soldiers are. The chances of APC winning that geopolitical region are uncertain. As a result of the new Electoral Act, it is now more challenging. Government House results writing is a thing of the past. If votes matter, APC will have difficulties.

How can Atiku win for the PDP if the entire South East and South South don’t support him? Despite his popularity, Buhari lost three elections before the South supported him.

The absence of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA’s) 62nd annual general conference at the Eko Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, has generated reactions from social media users.

The former governor of Lagos State, who was invited to speak at the event alongside other presidential candidates, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party, was noticeably absent at the event, while Mr Atiku and Mr Obi showed up for the event.

Mr Tinubu was instead represented at the event by his running mate, and former governor of Borno state, Sen. Kashim Shettima.

However, the failure of the presidential hopeful to show up at the event does not seem to have gone down well with some social media users, who took to Twitter to call out the APC presidential candidate over his absence at the event.

Reacting to his absence, Reno Omokri, a former aide to former President Goodluck Jonathan, wondered why Tinubu missed the event despite the fact that the event is hosted in Lagos State where Tinubu resides.

“If Atiku and Peter Obi can fly to Lagos to speak at the Nigerian Bar Association Conference, what excuse can Bola Tinubu have if he does not show face there? It is happening in Lagos. He lives in Lagos. Lagos is his base. Something is wrong if he does not attend!”, he tweeted.

He continued that “From Tinubu’s absence at the NBA Annual General Conference holding 5.7 kilometres from his home at Bourdillon, one thing is clear, Tinubu will avoid any gathering where Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi are present. Meaning he may not attend the Presidential debates!”

Another user @Ahfo_ tweeted “From Bourdillon to Eko hotel is 18 minutes by car, but Tinubu chose to send Shettima from Borno to attend the NBA conference.”

@I_Am_Ilemona “Pay attention to Tinubu’s refusal to attend the NBA conference today. It would have been the first public comparison of the top contenders for next year’s election. And his camp knew that it would expose how badly he compares to the others. So they sent his running mate.”

Another Twitter user @Sadiyahamza41 described Tinubu as a ‘placeholder’ for Senator Kashim Shettima “Those asking for the presidential candidate of APC should know that Tinubu is just a placeholder. The real candidate is Shettima and he was there live at the NBA conference,” she tweeted.

“NBA invited Tinubu to speak at their annual conference, and Tinubu sent Kashmir Shettima. Why are they hiding Tinubu like Covid 19 palliative?” @von_Bismack asked rhetorically.

The theme for this year’s NBA annual general conference is tagged “Bold Transitions.”

A few days ago, the Nigerian Bar Association invited the top 2023 presidential candidates of various political parties to the 2022 annual conference.

Among the 2023 presidential candidates invited were, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, and Adewole Adebayo of the Social Democratic Party, among many others.

Legit.ng gathered that two of the four leading candidates invited by the NBA’s Technical Committee on Conference Planning (TCCP) confirmed they will be attending.

According to the NBA, the leading presidential candidates would deliver speeches during the conference's panel session on “Democratic Transitions in 21st Century Nigeria: 2023 and Beyond”.

The conference which has been themed 'Bold Transitions' is currently taking place at the Eko Atlantic City in Victoria Island, Lagos.

However, as guests arrived at the venue of the 2022 NBA conference, Legit.ng noticed that the 2023 presidential candidates except Tinubu graced the occasion.

For instance, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP arrived at the event venue dressed in a black suit and to match trousers donning a red tie.

Atiku was at the venue alongside his entourage including the spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar 2023 presidential campaign, Dino Melaye.

Another aspirant who was present is Peter Obi of the Labour Party who was welcomed into the event with cheers from thousands of his supporters in the conference room.

However, unlike other presidential candidates, Bola Tinubu, the APC's national leader was absent at the 2022 NBA conference.

Representing Tinubu at the event is the former governor of Borno state Kashim Shettima who is the vice-presidential candidate for the APC in the 2023 election.

While speaking at the event, Atiku said that he is a product of devolved powers and he understands the workings of the regional government.

His words:

“I am a product of devolved powers, and I know what the regional governments did with those powers. That’s why I’m advocating for restructuring.”
Also present at the event are the governor of Plateau state, Simon Lanlong, Africa's renonwed writer, Chimamanda Adichie who has been billed to deliver the keynote speech at the conference.

The Labour Party (LP) has received several political decampees from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Igabi local government area of Kaduna State.
Labour Party deputy governorship candidate in the state, Hon. Bashir Idris Aliyu, who hails from the local government received the decampees at Mararaban Jos, shortly before the local government party office was unveiled.

He said over 50,000 of his well wishers from the local government have already followed him to the party but only receiving symbolically those present at the formal decamping program.

Aliyu who was a one time majority leader and acting speaker of Kaduna State House of Assembly said Labour Party has come to rescue the state and urged all and sundry to support the party for a better Kaduna State and Nigeria at large.

One of the decampees, Hajia Dada Mohammed, said left PDP for the Labour Party because having worked for the former party for years, there is nothing to show for it.

“The APC has inflicted so much pain on the masses, so let’s try another party and I know with the various party candidates, if this party wins, Kaduna State and Nigeria will be better”.

Another decampee Hon. Abduljalad Shehu said, both the APC and PDP have failed, hence the need to try a new party. He also said Labour Party is the credible alternative party to rescue Nigeria from her present woes.

Also speaking earlier, Hon. Ahmed Bappa, the Igabi local government party Chairman expressed joy with those who have come to.embrace their party, while assuring that more people will soon join the party and that Labour Party will soon become the ruling party in the local government, state and Nigeria.

“We are ready to go into every part of the local government and state to encourage people to embrace the party,” he said.

In the same vein, the Labour Party also held strategic sensitisation of members selected from across the entire wards of the eight local governments that make up the Southern Kaduna Senatorial district.

The meeting which was held at the new world hotel was convened by the Southern Kaduna Coalition of youths and women for Labour Party, according to the Secretary of the coalition, Mr Sunday Kasai.

Earlier in their separate speeches, the Chairman of the coalition, Mr. Danjuma Peter and other speakers such as Mohammed Zakari. Haluta Markus, Sekwogaza Parisa, Mohammed Auwalu. Linda Amani, Laraba Sabo Clement and Aliyu Saleh all committed to working for the total victory of the party’s candidates to include Peter Obi for President. Hon. Jonathan Asake for Governor and Engr. Michael Ayuba Auta for Southern Kaduna Senatorial district among others.
