Education / Re: English Grammar Mistakes And Corrections by flyingdragon: 4:46pm On Mar 10, 2016 |
Jokerman: I opened this thread for us to correct ourselves when speaking or writing English language especially with the figures of speech.....
So it is imperative you type the wrong use of grammar and tell us wat d correct will be.. thanks..
1. More better: This is wrong from what I hear. More and better are both comparative adjectives. More is used for adjectives or adverbs that their positive forms have more than two syllables... I.e * handsome * intelligent *comfortable. . e.g Positive Comparative Superlative 1. good better best 2. Young younger youngest 3. Brilliant More brilliant Most brilliant 4. Beautiful More beautiful Most Beautiful e.g * Ayo is better than femi....NOT: Ayo is more better than femi
2. Still yet: This is another mistake I heard people make, I inclusive. .. Still yet is wrong... it either one uses still or yet..
3. Use of Have and Has.. * use have for plural forms e.g The dogs have Temi and Shikemi have I/ We/ They have * Use has for singular forms or nouns e.g She has It has
Please no one is a virtuoso or genius in English language. Please help us with corrections even with the examples above. So everyone can learn.. thank you ferry much.... I totally agree with the above sentences. Good job. *Clears throat* I believe "Ayo is much taller than Femi" is correct when talking about the degree of differences and not just comparision. No bozz? |

Education / Re: JAMB CBT: A Look At Then And Now by flyingdragon: 3:49pm On Mar 10, 2016 |
obieokpala: The Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) went a step higher in 2013 with the Computer Based Test (CBT). For most of us, this was a necessary and timely innovation on their part. Most Nigerians are either giving a bow or a round of applause to the JAMB team.
THEN In the 90’s, when students sat for JAMB, it was a whole different ball game from now. The examination was kept on a pedestal of FEAR for most students. As opposed to recent times, most people wrote JAMB a minimum of twice, before they could ever think of gaining admissions. As a result, exam malpractice became a common denominator in the JAMB examinations. It seemed that no matter the angle approached to tackle this scourge, it just would not go away. Parents were a major part of the growth and immortality of exam malpractice at this time. For a good number of students also, there was a feeling that their papers were not being handled fairly. There was a belief that the results were “given” by those who marked instead of really being what they “got” in the examination. There was also the issue of not finding your result when the results were released, or, exam centre results being ceased. This caused problems for even the innocent ones in those centres. The step that JAMB took in 2013 has really changed everything. When we heard about this new decision, there was a mix of both anticipation and skepticism (good and bad): Can this really work? Finally, JAMB will be free and fair! Hmm, will Nigerians not find a way around it? Will my children be able to pass their exam now? Can we still cheat?
NOW There is a renewed confidence in the students writing the exams. The confidence stems from the belief that, machines are better than people. The knowledge that at least two days later you have your result is also a great motivation and sense of relief to students now. It now encourages young people to read as opposed to waiting to “sort” (give bribes or pay mercenaries). On account of the CBT, the students need a general knowledge of basic computer skills, which in turn, adds value to each student in the long run. New things are not always easy to accept, but all parents and guardians should embrace and wholeheartedly support this move, knowing that your children and wards would be better off in the long run. On a lighter note: I wish I was writing JAMB now.
Question In the early 2000’s universities started conducting their own tests after students passed JAMB and “gained admission” into their institutions. For most of us, the reasons seemed obvious with the plague of malpractice at the time. Now that there is the CBT is there still a need for that post UTME? Can’t the universities work with JAMB to settle the needs they believe JAMB is not meeting (if any)?
Then you would have a better understanding that the status quo as far as JAMB is concerned is a curse. mtcheew. |
Politics / Re: Global Crude Oil Prices Rises Above Budget Benchmark by flyingdragon: 3:55pm On Mar 09, 2016 |
coolscott:
PassingShot omenka NavierStokes1 flyingdragon What do you think is the relationship between the president's visit to the middle east and the rise in oil prices? Let me tell you that many have known that oil prices would rise again and it is all down to the Saudis' stubborn refusal to approve a cut in production by OPEC countries.
That same stubborn decision was what helped the prices go down but was predicted by them to still get the prices up later and international powers (and the biting low prices) could not convince them otherwise, much less Buhari.
The entry of American Shale oil into the market caused a glut in the market. Shale oil is more expensive to produce and as producers of other types of cheaper-to-produce crude find it harder and harder to make a profit at low prices, what do you think would be happening to shale oil producers? They would be forced to stop/reduce production as they would have forced prices too low for them to make any profits.
It should be noted that they also suffer from the effects of the low prices but chose to endure this suffering along with everyone else for the materialisation of their plan.
This has been the Saudis' (and OPEC's) position since the beginning of the drop last year.
Since the total amount of oil produced monthly has not reduced, we can confidently say that whatever you think Buhari did in the middle east to affect oil prices is more imagined than real.
either oil price is low or high is dependent on the major producers. And its price directly affects every producing countries especially countries like Saudi and Nigeria which depend on oil monies as their foreign reserve. Saudi and others know how to go about it if oil price is to rise again, and one most effective way is to cut their daily production which will subsequently reduce availability in the market then increment in price. But a country like Saudi will take all the pains involved to maintain its market share of oil sales even if It's goin to plunge its revenue. That said, cutting of daily production is not the only way to countrol oil price. We are talking about the country that countrols the world through oil. Saudi is OPEC and vice versa as US is NATO and vice versa. As much as I wouldn't want to sound like a conspiracy theorist, I can't stop believing the plunge in oil price is a plan by Saudi kingdom to frustrate Iran's economy when they come back to the market. Buhari's move and the beginning of rise in oil price is more than coincidence. |

Education / Re: Advantages Of Studying In A Nigerian Polytechnic Over A University by flyingdragon: 11:40pm On Mar 07, 2016 |
Thomsyne: In Nigeria, there are three types of higher institutions namely the College of Education, Polytechnic and University. But the strongest argument is centered more between polytechnics and universities. Most of the arguments are based on the effectiveness of one institution over the other. I am however, here to give points on why Polytechnics are better than universities.
1. Simplicity of Learning The OND and HND style of learning enables a lot of students to have a feeling of casualness and helps them in having gradual advance in education. Some might not have the money to pay all their education expenses at once and need to have breaks in their stages of learning to raise the money. The OND degree acquired will even be a better avenue for getting a better job. This is unlike Nigerian universites where you can only apply for Leave of Absence which lasts for just one year. I have seen cases of people who after acquiring OND, vested capital into a business and later came back to finish their Higher National Diploma courses
2. Development of dexterity It is general knowledge that Polytechnics offer a style of lecturing that is operational {Involves more of practice} and the students more liable to have confidence in getting jobs and executing them well. For instance, an Engineering student with a National Diploma degree has more experience in the operations of machines than a university student who is limited more to theory and will most likely perform better in the field.
3. Lack of Difficulty of Securing Admission It is easier to gain admission into a polytechnic than a university. A lot of people have wasted years trying to acquire university admission all to no avail and in the process forgetting that Polytechnics have made it less difficult to enter. With no more than two applications, the worries of admission would have been overcome
4. Lower Fees Nowadays, universities charge higher than polytechnics. This is usually common with state universities. I remember in 2014, if not for the protests by LASU students, fees would have been permanently jacked up to 250,000 naira. How many students can afford that? This is very very unusual with a polytechnic as fees remain stable throughput the sessions
5. Lecture Halls For Conducive Learning The state of many lecture halls is appaling as many are not suited for congestion. This is the reverse in polytechnics as lecture halls are better positioned and well spaced in order to create a suitable environment for learning and assimilation
6. Ease of Toggling Between Environments of Study Anyone can easily study two courses in different polytechnics at same time. It doesn’t even matter if they are in different states.
cc lalasticlala ishilove Dominique seun You are not totally correct with your points especially those of 4&5, many polytechnics (state owned) charge more than than some federal universities. And also, how many polytechnics have you visited to say their lecture hallsare more conducive? well it varies from school to school. Many polytechnics are worst when talking of being conducive for students. Especially now that they have started mixing part time and full time students together to receive lectures. How on earth could it be conducive with such congestion. Above them all is the dichotomy between the two; until It's fixed, i don't think we need to be comparing them with each other as it's sheer waste of time. Regardless of which polytechnic you finished from, a university graduate has upper hand against use in the labor market just because he/she is holding B.sc while you are holding HND. |

gannycute: please, is jamb still upgrading peoples score. A friend of mine through text msg scored 214 in his jamb and when he checked online too, it was the same 214. How was the 40marks added? Did they distribute it on each subject or they just they just added the whole 40marks to the final score Jamb deliberately gave some candidates 40 marks not because they paid for it but they believed they needed to compensate those candidates for incompetence on the board's part. Upgrading of scores without Jamb's consent is nearly impossible, you shouldn't bet 50/50 on it unless you have free money to throw about. |
