The extent to which an election is free and fair, is determined by the freedom with which the adult citizens of a country can participate in it as voters. In an electoral system in which primaries are conducted by political parties for members of each party to elect their candidates, this freedom of participation has to include the freedom to form political parties which can contest elections and to vote for, or against, candidates in the party primaries. This freedom was denied to the citizens of Nigeria in the presidential election primaries of 1993 which produced Chief M. K. O Abiola as one of the two presidential candidates. The convention of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) which was held in Jos on Saturday, 27th March, 1993, in which 5,215 delegates voted and Chief Abiola won with a majority of 272 votes, cannot by any democratic standards be regarded as free and fair. This is because the S.D.P itself was decreed into existence in 1989 by the Armed Forces Ruling Council. In fact, the formation of the SDP and the National Republican Convention (NRC), violated all universally acceptable democratic principles of party formation.

are you clowns aware it's standard operating procedure to handcuff any non-voluntary deportee while on a plane? It's done to citizens of EVERY country. No one wants to take the risk of having someone loose on the plane that's so emotionally distressed.

Ignorance is the main driving force behind some of the sillly arguments i've heard in this forum. If you cannot question why the female deportee was struggling, then i don't know what to say to you.

It is much more mind-boggling because there are many out there who have not spent as much on their food in their entire life but, then that is not of concern to the Dimeji Bankole-led House. After reading this from a national daily on Sunday, a friend said in consternation that, even if one was to eat a whole elephant, it could not have cost up to that. I think so too.

Pray, what in God’s name would make the Bankole-led House appropriate for each member this ridiculous, insensitive and outrageous amount for food in one day? What were they thinking? I have not found a worse form of gluttony and corruption than this especially from the same people who are fond of pontificating and probing this and that. Another friend has just joked that I should worry less because the Reps allocated so much because they were forward-looking, that soon world prices of food will escalate to the extent that their N114, 000 will be just right. That is simply stealing and it becomes worse that President Yar’Adua had to succumb to the threat from this same House over the budget which the president didn’t want to sign because he said it was skewed in favour of the lawmakers.

The Reps, according to the newspaper report, did not stop there. They are planning to spend N1, 720, 000, 000 on purchase of office equipment while it would also spend another N600 million on computers and Integrated Information Technology Project and Infrastructure. It will spend another N250million on intercom connectivity. Curious spending? Any difference?

The Reps also made provision for N600 million to purchase guest houses for the Speaker and his deputy in “the Lagos area” while about N500 million was allocated for the Speaker’s residence, the same offence over which Olubunmi Etteh was, well, unnecessarily, vilified. Our Reps did not stop at this insensate profligacy. According to this same report, the lawmakers in their 2008 budget earmarked approximately N2.8billion to purchase new vehicles for themselves, notwithstanding that the same amount was earmarked for the same items in last year’s budget!


It is only wonders that shall never end, not the charade by the House of Reps. All foolery must come to an end especially this one, because, as more people go hungry, every gluttonous Rep will vomit every silly morsel of N114, 000 food allowance they are swallowing. They will also go hungry unless they are purged."

Protesters Besiege Satelite TV Company

Placard-carrying subscribers of HiTV have besieged the Apapa Road office of the satelite television company to protest against what they described as the high handedness of the management.

Some of the placards carried had such slogans like ‘HiTV, hijacking of international television virus; ‘HiTV is another way of 419; ‘HiTV people are fraudsters and robbers’, and so on.

The subscribers’ grouse was that service on the network of the satelite TV had disappeared for sometime now, and since most of them that came to complain use their TV for commercial purposes, they complained that they had been losing revenue.

The peaceful protest eventually got awry as the subscribers quickly formed a mob, throwing all sorts of objects at the office while trying to gain entrance into the office premises. They got so violent that the management had to call in the police from the Denton Police Station, Oyingbo.

On arrival, the policemen shot sporadically in the air to disperse the protesters.

An insider in the company blamed the subscribers for the problem, explaining that most of them refused to renew their subscription after the one they paid had expired. ”What we did was to disconnect all those who refused to renew their subscription. What all those protesting should do is to pay and get their network back. Those that had already paid need to present their receipts to get back on line, “  the official told P.M.News.

I felt the same level of indignation while reading the story but something rang false. It just didn't seem possible that all the guy said was 'please don't kill him' and yet he was arrested and treated in that way. Why him and not the other passengers? And let's be honest, how many naijas in such a situation would have just said 'please don't kill him' without aggression? I'm sorry but it's just not in our nature to do so. In such situations, we become quite aggressive, especially if we feel our rights are being trampled upon.

Anyhoo,  just this evening, i decided to give my sis the jist and her hubby was there. He immediately asked me where i'd heard the story and then told me that his brother and a friend were both at the airport that day and had had their flights delayed as a result of this incident. It was while waiting for their flight that the economy passengers on mr. omotade's flight came out and told them what had happened.

Apparently, Mr. omotade DID try to intervene, but rather than ask the officials not to kill the deportee, he got quite aggressive and insulting. Now air traffic rules are clear. Assault on airline staff is not tolerated on any level, and assault is not only defined as physical assault. Raising your voice or issuing threats against an airline official is deemed as an assault. Long and short, not only was mr. omotade aggressive, he also started to whip up sentiments, such that the other passengers got involved. It was at that point that the officials decided to remove the deportee from the plane and report mr. omotade's behaviour to the police and the laws being what they were, he was immediately arrested.

Now, according to all the passengers on that flight, when they attempted to arrest mr. omotade, he actually STRIPPED DOWN TO HIS BOXERS while resisting arrest, insisting that he had done nothing wrong, since he hadn't physically assaulted any of the airline staff. Still, he was bundled off the plane and then the pilot decided he couldn't fly any of the economy passengers because they too had joined in the fray. He said he didn't feel safe, so they were all evacuated and the deportee was taken back on to the plane. The plane flew to lagos with only first and business class passengers (and of course, the deportee).

This story was corroborated by 2 different people at 2 different times, so i'm quite sure it's true. Mr. omotade needs to apologise for speaking half truths. In the first place, what was his business with the deportee? Did he know him from anywhere? Did he know why he was being deported? Of course, anybody in such a situation, resisting deportation would try to whip up sentiment and unfortunately, mr. omotade himself got caught up in the 'we have our rights' thing. He should have simply minded his business.

Homosexuality in Prehistoric Africa


Our knowledge of homosexuality in prehistoric African cultures is limited by the late-Middle Age European views of Africans, of homosexuality, and of course, the European reason for being in sub-Saharan Africa in the first place - the slave trade. Among the earliest references to it are some of the records of the Inquisition in Brazil. From the Denunciations of Bahia, (1591-1593) comes this thoroughly racist reference to it:

"Francisco Manicongo, a cobbler's apprentice known among the slaves as a sodomite for 'performing the duties of a female' and for 'refusing to wear the men's clothes which the master gave him.' Francisco's accuser added that in Angola and the Congo in which he had wandered much and of which he had much experience, it is customary among the pagan negros to wear a loincloth with the ends in front which leaves an opening in the rear,  this custom being adopted by the sodomitic negros who serve as passive women in the abominable sin. These passives are called jimbandaa in the language of Angola and the Congo, which means passive sodomite. The accuser claimed to have seen Francisco Manicongo "wearing a loincloth such as passive sodomites wear in his land of the Congo and immediately rebuked him." (quoted by J. Treveisan, Perverts in Paradise, London, 1986. Elipses are his.)

We can see from such references, that homosexuality was present in Africa from at least the earliest of European contact, and without much doubt, from long before. It wasn't just central Africa, either. While European proprieties made such graphic description of African homosexualities uncommon in their descriptions of Africa, there are enough references to it to know that it was indeed present, and even used as a justification for considering African cultures primitive enough to justify slavery.

Among the last African cultures to be subjugated by Europeans, the Hausa peoples of northern Nigeria and the surrounding countries offer interesting examples of homosexuality among Islmaicized peoples of Africa. Conquered by the British only in 1904, they were studied extensively by British ethnographers within a decade and a half of the arrival of the British - having experienced very limited contact with Europeans in the meantime. These ethnographers included sexual practices, including homosexuality, in their survey. Thus, they give us a unique glimpse into a nearly pristine African Great Religious culture.

The Hausa people have terms in their language that are used to describe homosexuals. Two terms are common, 'yan dauda, which is usually translated as "homosexual" or "transvestite" and 'dan dauda, which translates as a homosexual "wife." The 'yan dauda in Hausaland engange in stereotypical professions, much as marginalized gay men in the west often do. In Hausaland, they are often engaged in the sex trade - both as male prostitutes and as 'procurers' for female prostitutes. In the latter role, they do not behave as 'pimps' do in the west, maintaining 'stables' of female prostitutes under their subjugation, but rather simply as go-betweens, arranging, for a fee, liasons for men seeking the commercial charms of female prostitutes. In this role, they often engage as male prostitutes themselves when the opportunity arises.

Among other African tribes, homosexual behavior among premarriage adolescents is common and is not even considered to be sex, since it does not involve procreative potential. In Camaroon, for example, homosexual acts as late as age 17 are considered innocent, not being "true" sexual relations. Such youth consider themselves virgins at marriage, even though they may have considerable homosexual experience in both roles. There are many stories among the Pangwe of Camaroon of men who hate women and prefer the company of men even when offered a large brideprice, of men who court other men, etc. That these behaviors existed within this tribe prior to European contact is evidenced by the richness and number of these stories.

In Zimbabwe, a nation racked by recent homophobic pogroms instituted by its viciously homophobic dictator, Robert Mugabe, there has historically been little known about homosexual behavior among peoples present prior to European contact. Some ethnographers have dishonestly attempted to show that homosexual behavior is a recent innovation encouraged by Europeans to serve their capital interests, in housing large numbers of male Africans together in barracks to serve as labor in the mines.

The reality is that homosexuality existed in Zimbabwe long prior to European contact, just like it did anywhere else in Africa. We know this because the San people had the indiscretion to record their group anal sexual intercourse on rock paintings that date back thousands of years.

The Bantu-speaking peoples of the plateau country were more circumspect, but have admitted to ethnographers that homosexual contact did occur, and was expected of pre-marriage adolescent males.

Court documents from the colonial era from Zimbabwe and South Africa (1920 and 1917 respectively) indicate that among both the Mazoe and Ndebele peoples of Zimbabwe and South Africa respectively, a fine of one beast was levied against persons attempting to engage in sodomy by traditional rulers in pre-colonial times from both tribes. This fine equates to a misdemeanor - evidence that it was not heavily frowned upon, nor particularly uncommon.

Colonial court records also show that prosecution for male homosexuality at the onset of colonial rule amounted to 1.5 percent of criminal cases in Zimbabwe, eventually declining to near zero, while prosecutions for heterosexual crimes, such as indecent assault, rape, etc., rose from almost nothing to significant portions of the criminal dockets. It must be noted that because the 1.5 percent represented unwilling participants in the criminal process, the actual extent of homosexual behavior was certainly much greater, since only those caught in flagrante delicto, those prosecuted with amicus, or those accused by jilted lovers or others with an axe to grind, represent the criminal numbers we see in the records. The actual numbers were certainly much higher. In more than 90 percent of cases, the defendant was an African male accused of assualting another African male or boy. Cases involving Europeans were much more rare.

The notion that this is "a white-man's disease of recent origin" is made laughable by an even cursory examination of the criminal records of colonial Zimbabwe and South Africa. A close qualitative analysis of the early colonial trial transcripts shows that there was often shared property resulting from long-standing cohabitation by the defendant and his accusor. That the courts had to sort out the property details shows that these men had often considered themselves in a de facto marriage prior to their dispute.

Contrary to Mugabe's and other Afrocentrists' assertions, analysis of the colonial court cases shows that the rate of prosecution for homosexual behaviors was highest among the more indigenous peoples (Shona, 17% and Ndebele, 16%), and least among the "industrialized migrants" from elsewhere (about 3% each for Xhosa, Basotho and Zulu). Presumably the latter had simply learned better how to avoid the white man's justice.

Homosexual Activity Among Animals Stirs Debate




Birds do it, bees do it, even educated fleas do it. So go the lyrics penned by US. songwriter Cole Porter.

Porter, who first hit it big in the 1920s, wouldn't risk parading his homosexuality in public. In his day "the birds and the bees" generally meant only one thing—sex between a male and female.

But, actually, some same-sex birds do do it. So do beetles, sheep, fruit bats, dolphins, and orangutans. Zoologists are discovering that homosexual and bisexual activity is not unknown within the animal kingdom.

Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins at New York's Central Park Zoo have been inseparable for six years now. They display classic pair-bonding behavior—entwining of necks, mutual preening, flipper flapping, and the rest. They also have sex, while ignoring potential female mates.

Wild birds exhibit similar behavior. There are male ostriches that only court their own gender, and pairs of male flamingos that mate, build nests, and even raise foster chicks.

Filmmakers recently went in search of homosexual wild animals as part of a National Geographic Ultimate Explorer documentary about the female's role in the mating game. (The film, Girl Power, will be screened in the US this Saturday at 8 p.m. ET, 5 p.m PT on MSNBC TV.)

The team caught female Japanese macaques engaged in intimate acts which, if observed in humans, would be in the X-rated category.

"The homosexual behavior that goes on is completely baffling and intriguing," says National Geographic Ultimate Explorer correspondent, Mireya Mayor. "You would have thought females that want to be mated, especially over their fertile period, would be seeking out males."

Well, perhaps, in a roundabout way, they are seeking males, suggests primatologist Amy Parish.

She argues that female macaques may enhance their social position through homosexual intimacy which in turn influences breeding success. Parish says, "Taking something that's nonreproductive, like mounting another female—if it leads to control of a resource or acquisition of a resource or a good alliance partner, that could directly impact your reproductive success."

Sexual Gratification


On the other hand, they could just be enjoying themselves, suggests Paul Vasey, animal behavior professor at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. "They're engaging in the behavior because it's gratifying sexually or it's sexually pleasurable," he says. "They just like it. It doesn't have any sort of adaptive payoff."

Matthew Grober, biology professor at Georgia State University, agrees, saying, "If [sex] wasn't fun, we wouldn't have any kids around. So I think that maybe Japanese macaques have taken the fun aspect of sex and really run with it."

The bonobo, an African ape closely related to humans, has an even bigger sexual appetite. Studies suggest 75 percent of bonobo sex is nonreproductive and that nearly all bonobos are bisexual. Frans de Waal, author of Bonobo: The Forgotten Ape, calls the species a "make love, not war" primate. He believes bonobos use sex to resolve conflicts between individuals.

Other animals appear to go through a homosexual phase before they become fully mature. For instance, male dolphin calves often form temporary sexual partnerships, which scientists believe help to establish lifelong bonds. Such sexual behavior has been documented only relatively recently. Zoologists have been accused of skirting round the subject for fear of stepping into a political minefield.

"There was a lot of hiding of what was going on, I think, because people were maybe afraid that they would get into trouble by talking about it," notes de Waal. Whether it's a good idea or not, it's hard not make comparisons between humans and other animals, especially primates. The fact that homosexuality does, after all, exist in the natural world is bound to be used against people who insist such behavior is unnatural.

In the US., in particular, the moral debate over this issue rages on. Many on the religious right regard homosexuality as a sin. And only this month, President Bush vowed to continue his bid to ban gay marriages after the Senate blocked the proposal.

Already, cases of animal homosexuality have been cited in successful court cases brought against states like Texas, where gay sex was, until recently, illegal.

Yet scientists say we should be wary of referring to animals when considering what's acceptable in human society. For instance, infanticide, as practiced by lions and many other animals, isn't something people, gay or straight, generally approve of in humans.

Human Homosexuality

So how far can we go in using animals to help us understand human homosexuality? Robin Dunbar is a professor of evolutionary psychology at the University of Liverpool, England. "The bottom line is that anything that happens in other primates, and particularly other apes, is likely to have strong evolutionary continuity with what happens in humans," he said.

Dunbar says the bonobo's use of homosexual activity for social bonding is a possible example, adding, "One of the main arguments for human homosexual behavior is that it helps bond male groups together, particularly where a group of individuals are dependent on each other, as they might be in hunting or warfare."

For instance, the Spartans, in ancient Greece, encouraged homosexuality among their elite troops. "They had the not unreasonable belief that individuals would stick by and make all efforts to rescue other individuals if they had a lover relationship," Dunbar added.

Another suggestion is that homosexuality is a developmental phase people go through. He said, "This is similar to the argument of play in young animals to get their brain and muscles to work effectively and together. Off the back of this, there's the possibility you can get individuals locked into this phase for the rest of their lives as a result of the social environment they grow up in."

But he adds that homosexuality doesn't necessarily have to have a function. It could be a spin-off or by-product of something else and in itself carries no evolutionary weight."

He cites sexual gratification, which encourages procreation, as an example. "An organism is designed to maximize its motivational systems," he adds.

In other words, if the urge to have sex is strong enough it may spill over into nonreproductive sex, as suggested by the actions of the bonobos and macaques. However, as Dunbar admits, there's a long way to go before the causes of homosexuality in humans are fully understood.

He said, "Nobody's really investigated this issue thoroughly, because it's so politically sensitive. It's fair to say all possibilities are still open."
