The judge who precided over Nigeria/Cameroon case was French. Need I remind you the French Government's position on this whole issue

It is curious that an ICJ ruling which was not binding on Nigeria is one of the few Judgements OBJ's Government implemented hastily.

You know why we lost Bakassi?? Our priority was to avert war not to posses what is ours while the Cameroonians where busy threatening war. You don't go to a negotiation table with cold feet.
If war breaks out between Nigeria and Cameroon tomorrow, we will not feel the consequences alone so I don't understand why it should be up to us to avert war by giving up what is ours.

Do you sincerely believe that Bakassi belongs to Nigeria (rather than being inhabited by people who now refers to themselves as Nigerians who could have been Biafrans for example) based on the maps Of Nigeria and Cameroon drawn by the European Powers (Colonizers) and from the Picture shown above?

Nigeria's border demarcation is an ongoing process and many Villages will be won and lost in the North and South during this process.

All the war mongers should better find something else to do.

Nigerians told to accept transfer

Nigeria's president has gone on national television and radio to reassure residents of an oil-rich peninsula being handed to Cameroon.
President Olusegun Obasanjo told residents of the Bakassi peninsula their safety would be guaranteed even when Nigerian troops leave this year.

Mr Obasanjo agreed on Monday to implement a 2002 World Court ruling after talks at the United Nations.

A BBC correspondent said people in the area feel betrayed by the deal.

The territorial dispute sparked military clashes between Nigeria and Cameroon during the 1990s.

Most of those who live in Bakassi are Nigerians and are strongly opposed to coming under Cameroonian jurisdiction.

"We have ensured that Nigerians living now on the peninsula have a choice either to relocate or to remain in Bakassi," Mr Obasanjo said.

"Whichever choice they make, we have taken adequate measures for their protection, security, welfare and well-being. That was our concern and that we have achieved."

He also said that Cameroon had agreed to respect their culture, language, beliefs, property and fishing rights and not to impose "discriminatory" taxes.

Nigerian troops are to leave Bakassi within 60 days, with a possibility of extending this by a further 30 days, following the deal between Mr Obasanjo and Cameroon's President Paul Biya, brokered by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.

A special transitional arrangement will be in place for five years, Mr Obasanjo said.

Following the deal, Mr Obasanjo said solving the dispute peacefully was far cheaper than war and said it could serve as a model for other African disputes.

Bakassi juts into the Gulf of Guinea - an area which may contain up to 10% of the world's oil and gas reserves.

It is also rich in fish.

Nigeria has always said it would abide by the 2002 ruling but in 2004 said that "technical difficulties" prevented it from handing over the peninsula.

The 2002 International Court of Justice ruling was based on a 1913 treaty between former colonial powers Britain and Germany.

The agreement also settles the border for 1,690km (1,056 miles) up to Lake Chad.

The situation is beginning to calm down although minor altercations between religious and ethnic groups continue to occur sporadically. Humanitarian assistance is now being provided. However, in anticipation of a re-emergence of inter-ethnic and inter-religious attacks the Nigerian authorities need to address the underlying causes of the conflict that bear the risk of compromising law and order in the country.

Nigeria and Cameroon have exchanged 3 border villages following the verdict of the International Court of Justice concerning the border question between the two countries. The villages of Bourha-Wango and Ndabakura were returned back to Nigeria while the authority over Narki has been transferred from Nigeria to Cameroon.

Nigeria and Benin have made progress in the redefinition of their shared border covering a stretch of 870km. The negotiations are led by a joint commission (Nigeria-Benin) and could result in the transfer of 7 Nigerian villages to Benin and to the transfer of 2 villages to Nigeria that are currently under the authority of Benin. The implementation of these transfers will depend on the adoption of a resolution on a ministerial level. Experts are currently in the process of examining the status of three other villages that are situated along the border. The maritime borders between the two countries are regulated through the UN convention on maritime law, which locates this border at equal distance from the coasts of both countries.

Benin, Nigeria to demarcate border


The Beninese-Nigerian border was last demarcated in 1912 and since that, beacons have disappeared and settlements have expanded, crossing the border. A maritime border has never been agreed upon. Now, the neighbours are to "urgently" resolve the problem.

The Beninese Ambassador to Nigeria, Benoit Adekambi, at a meeting with Nigeria's Director General of the National Boundary Commission, Alhaji Dahiru Bobbo, has made "a passionate plea" for a speedy demarcation of the land and maritime boundary. His Nigerian counterpart promised the Ambassador his "commitment to urgently demarcate" the border.

Benin and Nigeria want to avoid the hardships of an international court process to reach a border agreement. Nigeria only recently lost out in a highly emotional court case against Cameroon. Benin, on the other hand, is currently negotiating its border with Niger in the The Hague-based International Court.

The exact location of the 770 kilometre Beninese-Nigerian boundary, however, is not less controversial than the two other examples. It is already clear that several villages will shift nationality when the border is demarcated. Also a future maritime border can be drawn upon various models with far reaching consequences if resources such as oil are found.

The Nigeria-Benin Republic boundary has only been demarcated once before. This was done with very few beacons by colonial masters in 1912 and most of the aged beacons have by now disappeared, according to the federal government of Nigeria.

This, said Nigeria's National Boundary Commission (NBC) leader Bobbo, necessitated "the need to rediscover and re-beacon fully this boundary." His commission together with the Beninese border commission, Mr Bobbo added, were using an inherited 1912 and 1914 protocol treaty on it between France and Britain for the exercise.

In revealing other grey areas, Alhaji Bobbo said, "after we have recovered the boundary, we discovered certain border settlements in a country through their growth, extended into it's neighbour's territory and are now called stranded settlement."

Other problems mentioned by the Nigerian expert were with the new and agreed joint boundary description of Nigeria and Benin. This included that some towns and villages became "transferred into having new sovereignty." Example of some were Bukuro, Organwe towns presently administered by Nigeria's Kwara State now falls under Benin, while also Muranukuru town in Benin is transferred into Nigeria's sovereignty.

On areas of Nigeria-Benin maritime boundary demarcation, Mr Bobbo stated that no single colonial document was inherited to delimitate this vital boundary. Marine borders were not a common issue at the time of decolonisation. The two neighbours would have to resort to international standards for reaching a logical border.

This exercise, Mr Bobbo added, was "enjoying commendable progress through the use of the 1958 and its revised 1982 United Nations Maritime Conventions in negotiating the maritime boundary."

The maritime border may become decisive for the management of fisheries resources and for possible future oil or gas explorations. Currently, however, there are no known resources except fisheries in the non-settled marine border area.

Beninese Ambassador Adekambi has been pushing the Nigerian government into action over the long boundary to avoid a lengthy international court process. At the meeting with Mr Bobbo, he was assured of Nigeria's "earnest desire to demarcate this boundary," according to a Nigerian government release.

Alhaji Bobbo informed his Beninese colleague that his commission would from 20-22 July hold two meetings of joint technical committee and joint inter-ministerial committee for the resolution of "outstanding grey areas" affecting the final re-demarcation of the boundary. If the proposed July 2004 meeting does not resolve the boundary problems, "political solutions would be sought," he said.

Commenting upon his experience regarding solutions to this boundary, the NBC boss said, "discussions and various Joint technical and field meetings held at finding lasting solutions to this boundary has remained very cordial and fruitful."

In his response, Ambassador Adekanbi commended the peaceful initiatives of Nigerian government at resolving the Nigeria-Benin boundary problem. The diplomat added that this development is "predicated upon the spirit of good bilateral relationship enjoined by both countries."

Both Nigeria and Cameroon are Products Of The Berlin Conference that partitioned Africa.

If the same West now claims Bakassi belongs to Cameroon, Any talk about the reject of the transfer is just playing to the gallery  unless you want to fight a war to claim the peninsula.

African Union may decide in its wisdom to have a Bakassi Conference where a new map of Africa may be redrawn subject to a referendum of the people affected by relocation if any.

Big Brother Africa ban overturned


Malawi's High Court has overturned a government ban on pan-African reality TV show Big Brother Africa.
The show had been taken off the air after the country's parliament condemned it as "immoral".

But the court said parliament - which voted for the ban because of concerns about sexual content - went beyond its powers.

"The constitutional duty of parliament is to pass laws, not to make orders,"said lawyer Noel Chalamanda.

The programme - based on the original Big Brother reality TV series - first featured 12 contestants, each from a different African country, locked in the house in South Africa.

Television Malawi will hold a board meeting to decide whether to put it back on air, said director general Benson Tembo.

Mr Tembo said he was happy that the court order asserted that nobody should interfere with editorial policy.

"The court has affirmed that only professionals at Television Malawi have the right to judge what should go on or off air," he said.

Taylor Nothale, chairman of the parliamentary committee on the media had said the show subjected viewers "to horrible pictures which are corrupting the morals of our children".

Most of the southern African country's 10.6 million people are deeply conservative Christians. It also has a Muslim minority.

MultiChoice Africa (MCA) services some 385,000 subscribers in 47 countries across the continent and adjacent Indian Ocean islands. This subscriber base grew by 50,000 for the last  year, with the best growth in the Angolan market.

The South African subscriber base ended the last year at 1.25 million subscribers, 83% of whom receive digital signals. The analogue subscriber base closed on 217,000. The number of digital subscribers increased by 138,000, ending the year on 1.03 million households. A new lower-priced tier aimed at the emerging market (DStv Compact) grew to 42,000 subscribers.

Speaker Shuts Up Critics, Presents NYSC Discharge Paper


In a move designed to put a lid to the raging controversies on whether he participated in the mandatory one year National Youth Service scheme or not, Honourable Dimeji Bankole, Speaker of the House of Representatives this morning circulated photocopies of his discharge certificate from the scheme at the premises of the National Assembly. There have been speculations in the past few days about the authenticity of the new Speaker’s academic qualifications as well as whether he served in the NYSC scheme or not.

The rumour was allegedly being peddled by some lawmakers in the lower chambers of the National Assembly who are not happy with Bankole’s emergence as the Speaker of the House.

Some members of the National Assembly under the platform of Integrity Group who were instrumental to the emergence of the Speaker had subsequently challenged the Speaker to redeem his image by making his discharge certificate available to the public if he indeed participated in the one year mandatory scheme.

But the number four citizen who said he would only discuss the issue of the NYSC discharge certificate when he gets it from his hometown of Abeokuta, in Ogun State, finally heeded the call of the Intergrity Group and other Nigerians this morning in Abuja.

A photocopy of the discharge certificate circulated by the aides of the Speaker in the premises of the National Assembly with the name Bankole Dabor Oladimeji indicated that the nation’s number four citizen did his NYSC programme in the Federal Capital Territory between 2 February 1998 to 1st February, 1999.

The discharge certificate has as its number FCT/FRN/97/99823.

Honourable Bankole had also yesterday challenged journalists to go the Abuja national headquarters of the NYSC to confirm or disprove the allegations that he did not participate in the scheme during an interactive session with reporters.

But enquiries at the Abuja NYSC National Secretariat have not yielded any dividend as at the time of filing in this report as a result of the usual bureaucratic red-tapism.

Also, some of those who claimed to have served with the Abeokuta born lawmaker have been coming to his defence.

One of such persons is Abdulrazak Tumba, a manager at the National Assembly branch of Oceanic Bank. The banker brought a picture showing Bankole and his colleagues at the Kubwa Orientation Camp of NYSC which was displayed to journalists yesterday during an informal press briefing.

Also, one of the Speaker’s friends also vouched before reporters that Bankole indeed took part in the mandatory scheme.

Apart from the NYSC issue, the Speaker has also challenged those who are disputing his educational qualifications to contact the schools he claimed to have attended to seek further clarifications.

The Speaker said he never went to Sandhurst military academy but only took courses for military officers at Oxford University where he was in the Artillery Corps and even won some medals.

The Speaker, who gave his service number as 24883329, further challenged his critics to go to the Website of Oxford University to verify his claims.

Meanwhile, Dr. Babs Hussain, Director, Nigerian Intelligence Study Group, said the fact that Bankole served in the British Army poses a serious risk by virtue of the position he now occupies in the country.

According to him, “loyalty and allegiance are serious issues in the milieu of sovereignty of any nation.”

It is your business as a patriotic Nigerian Citizen to tell us the truth if you know it and it is in your overall interest too.

If the allegations are false, show us your NYSC certificate, Mr speaker.  That should be simple enough.

If the allegations are true, the speaker should be thrown out so that the nation can move on. In the interest of the nation, a person who is compromised and blackmailable should not occupy such a high post.

Marriage & family

Yar'Adua has been married to Turai Umaru Yar'Adua since 1975 and they have seven children. Their daughter Zainab is married to Kebbi State governor Usman Saidu Nasamu Dakingari. Yar'Adua has been married to Hauwa Umar Radda as a second wife from 1992 to 1997. They have two children.

An Encounter With The President's Unreported Family


Many Nigerians have never heard about the President Umaru Yar’Adua second and ex-wife, and her children, but Sunday Trust’s Hassan A. Karofi traces the whereabouts of this unreported first family and brings to you their story

It is a happy family that lives in a serene area in one of Kaduna’s low-density communities, and while the journey to trace them took a long period, convincing them to grant Sunday Trust audience was another hard-earned success.

For about three months when Sunday Trust first leant about them, there was persistent effort to convince them to give an interview so that Nigerians will know about the existence of the President’s other children apart from the official ones known since his time as the governor of Katsina state.

Initially, when the request was made, Hajiya Hauwa Umar Radda, ex-wife to the President, agreed instantly. However, few days to the appointed date, she called through one of her sons to say ‘sorry’, declining to grant the interview.

A day after however, Sunday Trust called to persuade her further and after a very long conversation she obliged and described where she could be found. Thursday 2.00 pm was given as the appointed time.

When our correspondent reached the area, finding the residence became difficult notwithstanding series of inquiries in the vicinity. It was not until our correspondent mentioned her relationship with the President that someone directed him to the house; but even so, only after he exclaimed: ‘So it is true she was the wife of the president!’

After finally tracing the house, and having been asked to go into the sitting room, Sunday Trust found Hajiya Hauwa elegantly sitting in one of the sofas with some visitors who left immediately to allow her grant the interview. Though she is no longer married to Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, currently President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the ambience of the residence indicate that she and her children are living comfortably.

As we were about to start the interview, her brother, who is the former chairman of Charanchi local government area of Katsina state, Alhaji Dikko Radda, came in.


Before the interview started, Hajiya Hauwa told Sunday Trust how she manages the lives of her children, especially after their father was elected to vie for the presidency, and especially during the campaigns following anxiety about the condition of his health.

"One day while they were in school", Hajiya Hauwa said, "they called and said, crying, that they read about their father’s failing health. It was Ibrahim who asked me whether it was true that his father undergoes blood transfusion every month. I asked them if they had ever seen him in hospital undergoing blood transfusion. I was able to convince them that whatever they heard about him from the press was not true, it was just part of politics.

"That was how they continued to live under intense worries; until I decided to go to their school and told their teachers never to allow them read newspapers or watch television again".

Hajiya Hauwa also told Sunday Trust that since his election, Ibrahim and Musa always visit their father at the Government House, "but they usually spend a few days because they always insist that I have to go with them".

The President’s ex-wife also told Sunday Trust how she campaigned for the president, and how they met and got married, his favourite food, his demeanour and their relationship at the moment.

On whether there is the possibility of a re-union, she said: "I have heard a lot of rumors that we have re-united, but the truth of the matter is that we have not, and as we all know marriage and divorce are part of one’s destiny".

When asked whether she hopes to be re-united, Hajiya Hauwa asked which woman will not want to be re-united with her husband, declining to say whether it is true that the President normally visits her in her home.

"All I’ll say is that his children always visit him in Government House, but I was also there to celebrate his victory after he was declared winner of the April elections, this is all I can say".

Section 13 of the NYSC Act (amended in 1993) makes it criminal for anyone to dodge the service, under-declare educational qualifications or work in either public or private sector without undergoing national service.

If you are asked to present your University graduation Certificate and you then proceed to show your Matriculation pictures, What manner of person will you be classified as?

This dude is being accused of not completing NYSC and he proceeds to show Orientation camp pictures a good 3 years after he started working illegally in 1995 at Freight Agencies Nigeria Limited, Lagos then claims that,  for his primary assignment, he was sent to the National Human Rights Commission but was rejected and was subsequently sent to the West African Aluminium Products Limited, owned by his father, Chief Alani Bankole, where he became Executive Director, Operations and where he said he completed the national service in December 1998.

In business circle, the new Speaker can lay claim to some experience in family business. He was Director of Freight Agencies Nigeria Limited between 1995 and 1998; Executive Director, Operations, West African Aluminum Products Limited (1998-2003); and Director ASAP Limited (2000-2003).

NYSC SCANDAL: Speaker Keeps Quiet


The newly sworn in Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole, has refused to speak on the allegation that he evaded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

Some unnamed members of the House had alleged that he evaded the mandatory scheme for Nigerian graduates of universities, Colleges of Education and Polytechnics who are not above 30 years on graduation. Only those beyond that age are exempted.

Graduates who have served in the Nigerian military or the police are also exempted.

Responding to the allegation this morning in a brief telephone interview with P.M.News, Bankole said he won’t speak on the issue for now.

“I don’t want to be distracted in my new responsibility to Nigeria,” he retorted.

He said those who are alleging that he evaded the scheme should go to the NYSC to clarify the issue.

Also speaking with P.M.News this morning on phone, Funke Egbemode, former media assistant to the speaker, said the allegation was a figment of the imagination of those peddling it.

She said detractors should avoid heating up the polity through spurious allegations against public office holders.

Egbemode also said she can confirm that Bankole participated in the scheme.

A member of the House, Hon. Sampson Osagie, who nominated Bankole as speaker before he was eventually elected, said the allegation was the handiwork of the speaker’s detractors and called on Nigerians to disregard it.

It was reported in some national dailies that the speaker would address a news conference today on the issue.

Meanwhile, the speaker’s father, Chief Alani Bankole, has started deflecting the darts being shot at his son.

Speaking in Ibadan yesterday, the senior Bankole said the ‘banana peel’ that usually brought down top political office holders was not for his son.

It has been argued in some quarters that since Bankole served in the British Army and was discharged honourably, “whatever allegiance he had to that country subsisted while he was in active service and not after his discharge.”

Some members of the House of Representatives who opposed Bankole’s emergence as speaker sent SMS (Short Message Service) on their mobile phones to other members of the House not to vote for Bankole because he evaded the NYSC scheme.

Checks at the NYSC secretariat, Abuja did not yield any result at press time.

Bankole represents Abeokuta South Federal Constituency of Ogun State in the House of Representatives.

What a country!

National Service is a very Major Issue. The Fact that NYSC is not achieving all of it's set Goals is not enough to trivialise the body.

If The speaker dodged NYSC, does not possess the discharge or exemption certificate, then he simply has to go.

End Of Story.

The Speaker should honourably resign if he has no exemption certificate and he should do that A.S.A.P to avoid the type of rowdy sessions we had in the last few weeks.

The other alternative is that we all return back to the post Babaginda and Abacha Era of 19 states and the local govt. Cancel all 17 states created by Babaginda and Abacha , since they do not function well ,     post Babaginda and Abacha Era of 19 state, I say up bendel.

What is the best way to getting adequate funding for the so-called GREATER LAGOS AREA, than having it comprising of 3 States with enough Local Government Areas to reflect the population of it's constituent citizens giving the present-day realities of Nigeria as a Nation?

In Nigeria, A new State will at the least bring about some infrastructural development like new roads, State University, General hospitals, more Government ministries amd parastatals as well as more Local Governments which the current Lagos State lacks.

Lagos State is the only state that has not been divided since some parts of the old Western Region was merged with Lagos Federal  Capital territory.

Agege State  can be created and will therefore lead to more L.G's that the Tinubu Govt tried to create and led to withholding of L.G money apart from other infrastructural developments that state creation brings in Nigeria.

Lagos State was created on May 27, 1967 by virtue of State (Creation and Transitional Provisions) Decree No. 14 of 1967, which restructured Nigeria’s Federation into 12 states.

Prior to this, Lagos Municipality had been administered by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Lagos Affairs as the regional authority, while the Lagos City Council (LCC) governed the City of Lagos. Equally, the metropolitan areas (Colony Province) of Ikeja, Agege, Mushin, Ikorodu, Epe and Badagry were administered by the Western Region.

The State took off as an administrative entity on April 11, 1968 with Lagos Island serving the dual role of being the State and Federal Capital. However, with the creation of the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja in 1976, Lagos ceased to be the capital of the State which was moved to Ikeja. Equally, with the formal relocation of the seat of the Federal Government to Abuja on 12 December 1991, Lagos ceased to be Nigeria’s political capital. Nevertheless, Lagos remains the center of commerce for the country.

No state in Nigeria deserves another state more than Lagos State. Create Agege State.

I thought Agbada/Babariga wearing is Arabic culture that africans copied after conversion to Islam.

Did you ever see or read about  the ancient  Pharaoh's in Babariga/Agbada or any other ruler of the ancient African Empires in such dress before the advent of Islam.

At the end of the day more than the initial N628 Million will be spent on the renovations and car purchases but very little noise will be heard about it.

Rotimi Amaechi was expelled from the PDP for taking the party to court. The AC is now wooing him to it's fold and so he may become an AC Governor untill the Election Tribunal do the reasonable thing and call for fresh elections where he may contest under AC platform.

I don't see PDP using Amaechi as it's candidate in any new election in Rivers State if it ever comes to that.

There are too many Grey Areas in the Military-Imposed Constitution that we currently use and an amendment to it may clear some  of it e.g Cross-Carpeting in the Floors of the house and also at executive level. Tinubu an AD Governor metamorphosed into AC Governor and also the swearing into office of Governors and other elected officers despite pending Court Cases. IMO a 6 Month waiting period is needed whereby all election cases are given accelerated hearing.

The Supreme Court has become authoritarian and dictatorial in an attempt @ Judicial Activism. The judgement is wrong.

If the Parties are sacrosanct in Nigerian Elections then Why do we have bye-elections to fill up seats that have been vacated in the Legislature?

Congratulations! South Africa are World Champions for 2nd Time.

But as usual in Africa, the politicians want to impose Quota Systems on the team just like we used to do in Nigerian football but at a lower scale now. Sani Keita may not merit to be in Super Eagles but he fullfills Northern Quota, but Manasseh Isiaku may actually get in the team on merit if he works harder.

France Soccer team is great but the team is mainly black.
US Basketball team is great but the team is mainly black.
Brazil Soccer team is great but the team is mainly black.
SA Rugby team is great but the team is mainly white.

Now the politicians want the team to be mainly black, not on merit but by Quota and the team will probably start losing to teams like Morocco, Kenya & Nigeria and the politicians will be happy just like the Zimbabwe Cricket team has been destroyed even losing it's hard earned Test status for now. Black South Africans are more passionate about Soccer than Rugby but we all know the level of Bafana Bafana, a team Brazil Women's Team or Nigeria's Golden Eaglets will possibly beat.
