Soul means oneself and what I call consciousness (Orí in Yoruba spirituality). I used the term soul which will be more understandable to folks here.

This problem is not mathematics where 1+X=2 can be solved by a mathematical method and arrive at a definite answer, giving a complete rest to the problem. This is philosophical and metaphysical, and any answer brought will open door to more problems especially when your premises is scientific.

I need to add, there is no new soul added into the system. It is constant, like the amount of energy in the universe, not destroyed at the point of biological death or a new one created at the point of birth. This can be understood only when you see biological system as a vessel for which our souls experience the world. However, this soul can be recycled either as animal or insects or fishes or deity.

To solve this puzzle, you have to see this whole lot as a circle of souls between state of existences. In Buddhism, it is believed the circle stops and soul becomes purified after attaining enlightment and merge with the supreme soul, God. In Yoruba culture, it attains Ìwà pẹ̀lẹ́ tó become Òrìṣà.

I would have wanted us to explore the area of what soul, consciousness, or self is. We did in the past but really didn't scratch the surface

2. Human is an higher animal in biology but in Buddha teaching, they are the lowest because they experience suffering and pains almost throughout their lifetime. So it is entirely wrong to say they get promoted.

3. I watched a Korean movie recently and got to know about a statue or totem scattered all around Jeju Island. The statue is known as Dol Hareubang which literally mean grandfather. With about thousands scattered around, across Jeju island, Japan and other Asian countries where Buddhism have foothold, it is believed that these stone images are souls, that lived and most likely going to be reborn either as human or animal or whatever. So the issue of rebirth is not necessarily limited to living beings.

4. In Yoruba culture, we actually believe in the rebirth of souls. Known as Asheyinwaye, they uphold that all entities that exist in the physical realm have consciousness and that these souls transverse between realities that are there.

I think the eastern religions who uphold reincarnation doctrine settled that question with universal reincarnation of not just human being but animals, insects and trees. So maybe a lion that spared a cub like I saw in one documentary may reincarnate as human in next life. So population increase might be a result of animals or trees or insect or fish coming back as human
