foonshur,
that inverter looks very much like my old prostar 5kva modified sine wave inverter which I used for over two years. it's performance was anything but spectacular and then one very quiet morning I got up to power the inverter and it blew up in my face without any warning!
to say that I was shocked is an understatement. up till this day I couldn't fathom what could have made a perfectly working inverter go up in smoke just when the power switch was activated. I wasn't using solar at the time so that was out of the question. there was no phcn supply at that time so no question of overvoltage. and besides the same inverter had worked all through the previous night without any issues and I only just shut it down for an hour or two to give it some rest...and then boooom!
worse still, the very next day I took it down to the dealer only to be told that the model had been scrapped and was no longer being supported...
this experience was a turning point for me and it was why I decided never to have anything to do with chinese inverters, ever again!
exactly my my point. was just testing that shit for someone and I decided to use it over night. fortunately/unfortunately phcn was restored, and before morning it blew doz batteries to dat size. doz who made it should be prosecuted. just waste 2 good batteries just like dat for this economy

That's an old school Chinese inverter . Hossoni isn't a puresinewave inverter . it also has an adjustable charging current feature ! Cheers
Believe me that adjustable charge current feature is horse shit. it did that to those batteries.

Sir, if you read my previous postings, I have always emphasized 100% off-grid systems that are comprised of predominantly day-time AC loads. It may be an office or a business premise or even residential that require loads that run mostly in the day-time. Mind you, people have different solar power requirements, so don't restrict your understanding to only traditional dc-coupled residential off-grid systems.

In this type of off-grid system, the overall energy conversion efficiency is very high (in the high 90's) as energy from the panel only undergoes 1 conversion cycle (DC to AC only) and this energy is consumed as AC directly. Charge controllers are not required in this system.

In the traditional DC-coupled systems, which you may be very familiar with, you have DC to DC (charge controller), DC to battery (battery chemistry; very poor efficiency for lead-acid batteries) and DC to AC (Inverter) conversion. Energy is lost at every stage of conversion. Overall energy conversion efficiency for traditional dc-coupled systems is generally low.

In conclusion, my emphasis or talking point IS about harnessing the high energy conversion efficiency of grid-tie inverters AC-coupled to battery based bi-directional inverters for off-grid systems where the primary load is day-time AC loads.

Check out this link on the efficiency figures: http://www.northwindre.com/article/ac-coupling-converting-your-grid-tied-pv-system-into-a-high-efficiency-battery-backup-system

Oga, again you are going off-point. Your emphasis is GRID-TIE in its legal sense while my emphasis is GRID-TIE IN OFF-GRID SYSTEMS. Why are we all going around the bush here?? Nigeria is not ready for legal grid-tie systems yet, I know all that bla bla bla. However, grid-tie inverters can be utilized (and is being utilized in Nigeria) in completely off-grid systems: There is no legal grid to back-feed into and there are no certifications to submit to the govt. regulating bodies. There is no "accidental" back-feed to the grid if the installer knows what he is doing. That will be as stupid as an installer connecting a battery-based inverter to a 230Vac local transmission line. Am very sure he will not survive the fire-works (...joke..). If you want to counter my arguments, let it be based on GRID-TIE IN 100% OFF-GRID SYSTEMS.

In addition, the overall efficiency of AC-coupled systems are much higher than DC-based systems because the conversion is DC to AC and your load is 100% day-time AC. The battery backup is just an add on feature.

Thank you Sir.
Thanks boss, but if you don't mind my asking... why will i use a "grid-tie" system to feed into an off-grid system, when a well setup off-grid system will do the job for me 100%. or am i missing something here?

Good-day guys

I have a question for the gurus in the house. Can one use a cable of smaller gauge for the neutral line compared to the live in a solar setup between pv and cchuh

Why i ask is that am trying to setup about a 1.5kw pv on mppt cc for a 24v battery bank. Plan is to use 10mm for live and then 4mm for the neutral between pv & cc. Distance will be 25ft (30ft max).
Ayam not understanding.... is there "live" and "neutral" in dc setup?
Bros, no go burn house oo!

Thanks to you all. I really feel at home here. I started with a 2000W 24V cotek inverter, a 30A Stecca PWM CC, 4X410AH (6V) battery, and 1400W mix solar panels. I need only lights and a few fans at the time for the place since I was living there less than half there only half the year at the time. It worked out well till battery maintenance started giving me issues. I had a few guys I had trained to do the maintenance, but neglected to do as long as they had lights. I sold most of my items to friends and family, used some to batter trade for building materials and when I replaced it with my current system; 8x430AH Crown Batteries, 3xMorningstar 60A MPPt CC, 1 Magnum 4448MPAE, 15x435 solar panels (these are rebranded Sunpower panels). I use the batteries for only Funs, TV, Lights in the night. The AC can be used during the day for about 4 hours and I do washing and ironing only during the day. The Fridge and the Freezer are on timers so they come on at 6:30 in the morning and go of at 7PM. The batteries are always are always between 50.8 and 51.2V in the morning. 2x35w flood lamps are on through the night and 6x35W flood lamps with motion sensors and photocell on all the time. I wired my place 110V since am not on the grid and most if not all my appliances are from the States. The 110V appliances also deters theft in my absence.

earthrealm,

generally speaking, the higher the wattage, the better for solar panels.
saipro and dmerciful are both on point. rajo4real too.
my next set of panels will definitely be higher than 200w. wink
I think it boils down to space and affordability when choosing the type of modules to purchase. once the modules are in the tier 1 category in terms of efficiency, a 100W panel will give you a 100W worth of power so does the 200 and 250 as the case maybe (of course, under standard conditions).

foonshur,

you can go back to year 2014 or 2015 pages on this thread if you really want to see my
roof mounted solar panels. i think that was when i did my last set of installation.
note however that 40 panels is still nothing compared to what others have on their roofs
even though they may not be members of this forum.
the object of this thread is to encourage and advise one another so i'm not really keen
on showing off anything lest it will be misconstrued as show-boating.
2014/2015 pages, na work you wan give me so o. I think I'll just imagine it. Or better still whenever you are cleaning your panels, you can use the opportunity to take pictures. I think I'll prefer that wait. BTW, you nt showing off, you answering a dude that requested for something. wink grin

Thanks.
Call Kiekie1 for urgent purchase of those batteries .
funny you asked that... I was curious about how bad they are myself and I did some testing (well my installer did the testing). 1 of those ba3's gave 12.46v no-load and then 12.34v on-load while the other ba3 gave 12.32v no-load and 8.68v on-load. so its 1 of those ba3's that's actually bad and it has been giving the other one a bad name. well the ba3s are actually a year+ old so i cant combine the good 1 wit the replacements.
BTW... @ kiekie1 i dey call o

I basically stated my opinion and the results I got and you have the effrontery to tell me I'm lying. I charged the phantom phone and it lasted for me that long. I did not use it for social media. You can simply state your point without telling others that they are lying about their experience. Its rude, uncouth and says a lot about your upbringing.
plain and simple.... You are lying!
