It's surprising how South Africa's economy is that small with all the gold, diamond, chromite, palladium, long history of education and interaction with Europe and Asia. I guess it's the apartheid thing. The Boers excluded the blacks from the meaningful sectors of the economy. Now the blacks are the majority with nothing to show for it but crime,HIV, drug use and other vices. This has surely restricted the growth of the South African economy and society.

Exactly what happened. They took all their wealth and enriched themselves. This explains why it's the capital of wealth inequality in the world but unfortunately these Southies are trying hard to hide the obvious/known facts from us.
