The reason Ajayi started that gane was because Bright was playing rubbish prior to the match. Ben had to play RB. With Aina or Bright on top of their games, Ben would have paired Bassey while Ajayi sit on bench. It's a common knowledge.

That's not to say Ajayi is not good or Ben is a perfect player.
As for the Portugal game, one thing I admired about Ajayi was the inverted CB role he played at some time during the first half. We beat Portugal's press twice and he had the chance to drive the ball forward but he lost it. A ball playing CB would have probably done better there.

This is the reason Emmanuel Fernandes is attracting interest from Dortmund; Benjamin Fredricks will soon be a starter at Brentford and Bayer. I like Ajayi and think he has earned his stripes as one of our reliable defenders over the years, but right now if we go by the pecking order of our CBs at least under Chelle> it will easily be Bassey, Benjamin Fredrick, Fernandez, Igoh Ogbu, Nwaiwu and then Ajayi. The only reason Ajayi even played that Portugal game was because Ogbu was injured and Fernandez had a slight groin injury.

Benjamin got opportunity to play because Ajayi was rusty. He didn't get to play at the beginning of the season but as soon as he got playing time, he was called immediately. That tells you how much Chelle rates him.

Moreover, Ajayi has played regularly in AFCON and contributed in getting us to the finals. Until the aforementioned players get us to that level, we can have a reasonable debate but for now, they are understudying Ajayi.
