FULANI HERDSMEN: WHY THE NIGERIAN NATION SHOULD BE WORRIED Man to man is so unjust, man’s inhumanity to man is soaring daily, so is the Nigeria’s fragile nation sliding into. Over the years, Nigeria has witnessed a lot of civil unrest both on religious and ethnic line. In fact, this “wars” has been part and parcel of the Nigeria’s political evolution. Tribal war, religious unrest, boundary disputes aren’t a novel phenomenon to Nigeria as a nation. The recent killings and massacres by the much dreaded Fulani herdsmen around the country is increasingly outrageous. The usual reason put forward by the apologists of this evil doers is that the clashes are best described as “farmer/cattle-rearers” clash. However a glance at the statistics will necessarily rebut such claims. The ever armed Fulani herdsmen maimed and killed farmers and also displaced thousands of others in an onslaught of attacks which started since feb 22nd with about 7,000 persons displaced and more than 400 persons killed in Agatu village. The usual excuse by the Fulani herdsmen is that their cows were attacked by the farmers upon feeding on their crops. This is so untrue because there have never been any coverage of such dead cows but only the bodies of innocent children , pregnant women, and weakened old farmers have littered the deserted Agatu village. Even if the allegations are true , is the worth of a cattle’s life the same as that of a man? To say these blood thirsty are crazy is an understatement. Interestingly, every massacre in the middle-belt by the Fulani Herdsmen is usually followed by two development; the desertion of the village and towns by surviving members and a subsequent occupation by the Fulani herdsmen. Isn’t it right to assume the Fulanis are deliberately attacking their preys in order to take over their lands? Or better still a tribal cleansing happening in the North? This recent killings and past atrocities should worry the the Nigeria nation because of its heterogeneous status in both religious and cultural values. If a halt is not applied to this trending menace, it is only a matter of time before a general hatred will be abhorred by Nigerians against the Fulanis which will not be healthy for the Nigerian already fragile nation. The FG’s silence over a serious issue like this is even more appalling. If one looks at the zeal in which the FG and the Nigerian Army took in addressing the Biafran protesters and the Shites movement earlier this year, it might be safe to conclude that the FG indifference to this menace is frustrating. Perhaps because the first family are Fulanis! The need to tackle the root cause of this clashes between farmers and herdsmen is increasingly apt . Government at various levels should provide grazing paths and fields which can leased out to the cattle rearers and to prevent encroachment of farmers’ crops. The FG should also enlighten the herdsmen about the obsolete status of nomadic rearing of cattle in this century of ours. This is not obtainable anymore in sane and developed countries. Radical educational evangelism still need to be preached because the lack of acceptable standards of behaviors obtainable in a decent environment and defection both in character and in learning can only best explain the usual restlessness among the Fulani herdsmen. Nigerian nation is a fragile one with the presence of much complexities, if this menace isn’t curbed at this early stage, we might be growing another “Haram” which would not be healthy for the unity of the nation. People’s emotions are high already and almost all Nigerians believed the cups of the Herdsmen are full already. Promise of CHANGE or change of PROMISES? The emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 presidential election was received with wide celebrations across the country and beyond. Nigerians were afforded the freedom from a cabal led administration with alarming corruption , high level of nepotism, insecurity in the country, dwindling economy and a host of others. Nigerians voted for change! President Buhari won the keenly contested election which raised and aroused a lot of emotions not because he has a good academic background, or because of his good looks and even despite his “sins” as a military dictator between 1983-1985, he was forgiven with the popular support he enjoyed through the whole country. President Muhammadu Buhari and his change mantra campaigned with a various promises to be delivered to the populace, the readiness to fight corruption among others. In fact 70% of Nigerians believed the messiah was here It was with rude shock that I received the news that president Buhari declared on national dailies that his administration had no credible intelligence on the Chibok girls. With no prejudice to the president’s unseen efforts, this is one of the greatest political betrayals in Nigeria’s history. For an administration which wnjoyed wide publicity on social media as a result of its campaign for the release of the Chibok girls through the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. It is now apparent that the APC-led government only pretended to care in order to sway ever unknowing Nigerians. Boko haram has been one of the greatest embarrassments to the administration because of the unresolved fate of innocent lives being taken in the North-East. The president technically promised that Boko Haram would be defeated within four months of its administration but the reality is the dreaded group is still wielding a lot of power a in more than 10months of the administration. The federal government took its propaganda to another level when the image maker of the government; Lai Mohammed said the administration had technically defeated the terrorist group in December in other to meet the December 31st deadline by the president. It is never a good idea for politicians to dictate deadlines for achieving g victory in counter –insurgency campaigns. The truism is increasingly apt; more than 200lives has been lost since this “technical victory”. Rather than trying to garner cheap popularity what the administration should have done is to announce the gradual degradation of the Boko-Haram’s ability to territory and a resolve to increase intelligence driven counter-terrorism campaign. The mystery 2.2trillion that the federal government alleged to have saved in the past six month due to the success of the single treasury account is also intriguing. I will not dismiss the story out rightly as a lie but how does the government which can barely pay workers salary save so much in such a short time and nothing has change in our fortunes? the missing budget saga is another issue that calls for attention because how does the federal govt explain the large sum of money that was “sneaked” into the budget? We need genuine answers based on sincere analysis , not more lies or excuses exonerating themselves against glaring failures. Rather than continue to peddle propaganda and spread false cheer about the progress we have made, I think it is high time we admitted that Nigeria is warped and our systems are collapsing, unwieldy and unsustainable. It is my believe as an enthusiast of the success of this change that this administration can get the dashed hopes and can still retreat from its present trajectory of high expectations and eventual disappointment. It must adopt a more realistic evaluation of its deeds and be honest with the Nigerian people. It must communicate with greater clarity, intelligence, sensitivity and integrity. coolzeal:I will salute your courage if you can upload your picture during the protests. What amuses me most is most of the youths who call for war has never witnessed.... there is no how secession threat wouldn't lead to a bloodshed. Nigerians should embrace peace and continue with their lives. It is you educated elites and political hallelujahs boys that are heating up the polity because of political and tribals gains.I am Yoruba from Ondo state and I reside there,in Akure,ONDO, Owo,Ore and others IBO's are comfortably settled with good living conditions. I don't why y'all keep instigating unnecessary hatred. The most annoying thing is the elites will calk for war,the poor masses will be the one to suffer. #My2cents |

Hello here, please I need advice on career path of Estate Managers vis a vis availability of jobs in Nigeria. I am currently studying law but am also considering pursuing a professional career in estate management concurrently with law practice. Experts Opinions and advice will be appreciated. |
Kikero112:The fact is the mega schools project is not bad but a misplaced priority on the side of government.Imagine the state government expending a whooping sum of 600,000,000 on each mega schools!,it is totally unacceptable. Akure the state capital has like 4, like 6 other local govts areas has one each. Why not renovate the existing schools that are in perpetual loathsome conditions across the state? As an average Nigerian from this state, the mega school project is nothing but just a means to siphon money. |
You could have summarized everything that we should save more than we spend. This daily savings ain't feasible.... nice job tho! |
folabayo1:You might not see anything wrong in it,but give it a look from another perspective. The child of an indigenous King in Africa dressing like someone in rags(in the name of fashion) is so unruly and unacceptable. It is more than a slap to the Yoruba cultural heritage her father stands for. Some responsibilities comes with some positions, but apparently it is none of my business but am convinced it is wrong morally and ethically though she has the legal right to dress the way she want. |

Well it is not due to incompetence in any way but I think most Female lawyers in Nigeria prefer to go the bench and work in government ministries, corporate bodies, firms, banks et all. This is due to the fact that private practise in Nigeria is really burdensome and women generally won't be able to cope unlike their male colleagues. |
emmanuel596:What have you given to the charity this year?Does he needs to come online and brag about what he gives to charity?..... You better work hard to make yours and stop hating because comments like this only come from poverty stricken individuals. |
