MERCY SAID NO

Before I start, I will like to say a big happy birthday to the baby in the house. Mercy Bako. Many more years to you dear.

Don't know what to write about, but I will try to come out with something. I know how much you love horror stories. Let's go with this folklore though. I hope you get scared enough. It was told to me by my mother. Forget me, she is the greatest story teller ever and with my dad? They are the indestructible duo.

********************

Ojima lived by the seashore with her parents. Beautiful, pious, elegant and sweet Ojima. Rumour had it that she could charm spirits with her sweet smile and get away with any offense. She is constantly praised behind her back but in front of her, nobody said anything. Reason being she had acid for tongue and fire for eyes. She could make you hang yourself or better still, stop existing. She had once made an old woman run into the forest never to be seen again because she had been termed ugly. In the words of Ojima,

"Mama, I don't think you are fit to live amongst us humans. The only place you are good to be is the forest because that's where ancestors stay."

Being beautiful is one thing but being rude, is a no no. Ojima would wake up in the morning, look herself in the mirror and praise her beauty. She would walk around the compound facing the sea with her shoulders held high like the peacock. She would clean the compound while singing her praises, gracefully raising dusts.

Her mother had complained ceaselessly but her father gave her the nudge. He bought the most costly trinkets for her. Being a successful fisherman with labourers under his command, he would sail as far as the north into Kebbi and return with beautiful ornaments for his only daughter. Beautifully dyed skins from the famous Kano pits marked everywhere in her room.

Soon Ojima came of age and suitors began to demand for her hand in marriage. From the prince of the town to the dirty, lowly pauper. Her reply was the same.

"I am fit only to be married to a god, your human forms disgusts me."

Her mother had tried all she could to talk her into marrying one of her suitors, even if not for love but for the fact that some had walked from the other part of the world to seek her hand.

With gentle shaking of her head and a sensuous baiting of her eyelids, she would tell the mother,

"Until a god comes, I refused to be entangled in the affairs of men."

"Ojima, gods are fearful beings, I don't think you can withstand their awesomeness."

Her mother would chastise her with love.

"Mama, if I can't, then my beauty will work the magic."

Would be Ojima's reply.

"Beauty is only skin deep my daughter. Ojugo that you chased into the forest never to be seen again was once this town's most priced belle."

"That was her time. She did not utilize it, if a god doesn't come for me, then I am afraid, I will have to go and seek one. Even if it means walking the clouds to see Amadioha himself."

Ojima was proud, unreasonable and stiff-necked.

Across the sea also lived a demon. Atatabula, a fearsome creature who walked on one goat hoof, one wooden leg, had the face of a lion and pig with his peenis going as much as twenty times around his waist. The flying birds brought the tale of the enchanting Ojima to him.

"Are you saying she wants a god?"

He had to be sure. The birds nodded in the affirmative.

"Then a god she will have."

Atatabula got ready for his journey. He started walking and asking for body parts from other animals. From the snake he got his eyes, the termite gave him his colour. The cat-fish gave him its smoothness and finally a human gave to him the necessary parts. At the end, he looked like an Arabian prince and didst dress as such. He crossed the sea with his magical ship, the servants accompanying him all figments from his wicked magic. Atatabula was really out to charm the beautiful and arrogant Ojima.

After days on the sea, Atatabula arrived and promptly Ojima agreed to follow him back across the sea to his land. A land where she would be his queen. The pleadings of her mother fell on deaf ears and the father was too mesmerized by the charm of the "prince" not to let his daughter go. Coupled with the many gifts of gold and various ornaments that he had received.

Thus Ojima followed her husband across the sea never to be seen or heard of again. Many birds who flew past the town later told tales of Ojima. She had been given the beauty of Atatabula and was made to serve him all her life.

The end.

I had to skip so many details seeing that I was covering grounds. The story is long and writing it might turn into a book. You all know these folklore, it was told when the moon was at its brightest one day. My mother surely is a great story teller.

Happy Birthday Mercy Bako (in case you don't know, Ojima means Mercy in my dialect)

Wow! I must confess that I never expected that caprice, that swift change. I had initially thought this was just another of the our numerous folk tales that illustrate our old maxim that 'every good deserves another'. This displayed here, is creativity in it's most extreme form. And, I really mean do 'extreme'. smiley

There's a lil' typographical slip in paragraph 7. Check.

Thanks. But can you please point out the sentence so I can effect the correction? Thank you

FOR AJUMA PRINCESS OMEREJO

Truly, I wanted to write something since morning. I waited for inspiration but it ran away. It just came back so I would be penning down random thoughts. If it comes out fine, to God be the glory, if it is the other way round, bear with me.

****************************

Thursday dawned with the sun kissing the skies. The little sparrows were bouncing around with no worldly care. They had survived another storm so would disturb the magical forest with their tiny voices. The bluejays were gloomy and silent. Their voices had they borrowed the indian girl that wanted to sing for the prince. Now they wish they too could partake in the musical jamboree.

A little ant was working tirelessly, trying its best to get a grain of wheat into its hole when one of the sparrows sighted it. Flying down, it perched on a dry stick whose equally dry branch hung in the air.

"Do you need help?"

The sparrow asked soothingly, its tiny eyes blinking rapidly. Its stomach was already filled with berries they had fed on that morning. A little harmless ant was not in its menu for the day.

"Yes I do."

Came the reply. The sparrow jumped down and help rolled the grain into the hole for the ant.

"One day I shall repay your kindness."

The tiny ant said. The giant sparrow only laughed before jumping into the air in flight. As it flew, it sang beautifully of how helping others was joyful. The tiny ant sauntered into the little crack in the earth called its home. It had a tale for its kindred. He had escaped being eaten by a sparrow. A story nobody believed.

Days passed and the jungle remained magical. Nobody crossed the path of another and food was in constant supply. A new threat was in town though. A giant, gold web spinning spider. Its web were so strong it trapped creatures in it. From beautiful butterflies to tiny birds. Even sparrows were not spared. They could in no way shake the web from their wings. The more they struggled, the tighter they got entangled. The spider itself would sleep in a hole bored by woodpeckers and would only come out at night to feed off its victim.

The good samaritan of a sparrow who had gone to visit its grandmother in another forest flew back home. He flapped his wings singing songs to himself. So lost was he in his world that he did not know danger lied ahead. Alas! He was caught in the web built by the spider.

From morning he called for help till the sun retired from the sky. Just when he was about to give up, an ant strolled by.

"Dear ant, would you please help me? I need to get untangled from this web because my wife is sick and my children are not home."

The sparrow pleaded with the ant. The ant looked at the sparrow and at once recognized it. It rushed back, down the tree into the little crack in the ground.

"Come and see for yourself. The sparrow I told you about is caught up in the tree and is pleading for my help."

Thus the ant's clan followed him up the tree. The sparrow sighting them was happy. Finally help had come but it was not to be. The ants instead hid and waited for the sun to go down. The spider came out from the hole in the tree and fed off the sparrow amidst its sorrowful cries. Nobody came to its rescue, not the ant neither its clan.

When brightness greeted the day again, the ants had a whole lot of flesh and bones to last them the winter. So was the remains of the sparrow carted off to be fed on till the spider hunted again.

BAD NEWS (The Pains of Joseph Success)

Do not get thrown off by the title of my story. There is no better way to put it than in this way. I am in pains right now and I am not finding it funny. You know this internal pain you feel without the guts to tell anybody about it. That's what's happening right here.

I am pained.

I seat and stare blankly into space with thoughts racing through my head. I feel cut-off from the rest of the world. A gentle tap on my shoulder and I turn. Right there standing behind me was Mercy.

"What's wrong?"

She asks in her tiny voice. Her eyes carried all the care in the world. Just what I needed right now. I had begun smiling when my thoughts came crashing back. My lips twist as pain surges through my body. I could feel the tears welling up in my eyes. Not wanting to cry before her I quickly turned. My handkerchief was right there. It had become moist with tears but it still served its purpose. I quickly dabbed the tears away.

I feel her hand on my shoulder again. This time there was a reassuring squeeze from her. I tried to relax, wanted to hide the sobs that was gently rocking my body.

"Joseph... Talk to me."

Her voice, that voice. I smiled through my pain and turned to face her. I could see shock registering on her face. Her hand shot up with a finger tracing the tears line that was progressively drawing on my face.

"You are crying.?"

It was more of a question than a statement. I swallowed the lump that had formed in my throat, sighed and shook my head. If it was sorrowful, I cannot say. I just knew my lips were already dancing. I raise my hand and gently clutched the wind, my veins visibly displaying in a criss-cross of green and purple. I drop to my knees.

"I am dying..."

My voice trailed off.

"You are acting another drama."

She said and turned to walk away. I held her hand, she stopped. I pulled her gently, she did not move.

"Last night, under the rain."

I paused. Her finger was on my lips. I could faintly taste my tears on it.

"You said you love me."

That wasn't what I meant to say.

"That broke my heart."

She continued.

"You don't get it. Saying I love you mean I truly love you. Wanted to get the burden off my chest. I am truly dying."

I cut her. Her eyes blazed, she lifted her hand and dropped one on my face. The slap echoed in my heart, the pain stung my face but I felt hurt that my hard face might have hurt her.

"I have cancer..."

Another slap landed on my face. Then another and another. Mercy broke down and fell on her knees too. She was crying hard, tugging on my shirt.

"I love you too. Please tell me you are acting and it is a joke."

I wish I could but no, it was real. I was dying. At a young age too. Dying from the scourge called CANCER.

The end!
