RomanceNow That APC Is Here (A Love Story) by FoxyFlow(op): 9:59am On Apr 02, 2015
NOW THAT APC IS HERE (a love story)

I laid on my bed with a beating heart. I kept thinking of the words of Kasham.

"I am getting married and you will be my MC. Please do this for me. You know you are my best friend."

It was devastating. I had love Kasham from the very first day I saw her. Beautiful, dark, lovely and curvy in the right places. Her voice was sing-song and her laughter rang like bells to me. The way she carried herself too was akin to Hausa princesses. A beautiful, master-crafted and onthologically painted being.

"Wow"

Was the first word that came out of my mouth. After 3 years and she still thinks I'm her best friend. Did she forget so soon that I took a bullet for her on my chest. Just below my heart. I had survived it but the scar still remained. I pet the scar each night while listening to Bruno Mars' song.

"I'll catch a grenade for you". I even went ahead to have the scar tattooed love with "Kasham" written below with an arrow piercing through the scar; in the direction of my heart. Though I never allowed her to see it.

I still remember vividly the day I went into the 150ft well in her compound to fetch her head-tie. The wind had blown it off her head while we stood talking. I remember being cut-off from oxygen as I descended into the darkness below. The heat, the mosquito buzzes, the fear, all this I braved.

On my ascension above, she peck me on my cheek. The oxygen I had lost came flowing back. My skin became lighted again. I went home with a smile. I took a selfie of that cheek that had her lipstick stain on it. Printed the picture, laminated it and hung it on the wall above my head each night.

"Please say yes.."

Kasham voice struck through my thoughts. I looked into those big dovey eyes of hers. My heart felt pained. Couldn't she see the love in my eyes. The softness with which I gaze at her? The smile that I give to her each time I see her? Going out of my way to do extraordinary things? Couldn't she see the love I have for her?

"You aint saying anything Joey."

Her hand had found its way to my arm. I sucked in air quickly and gazed at her. There she is looking all innocent.

"But I love you Kasham and intend marrying you too."

I say to her.

"Wha..."

The words did not come out. Her face looked horrified. She had removed her hand from my arm and had taken a step backward.

"But I thought you are my best..."

"Friend"

I helped her complete it.

"I know. But had always love you."

I throw my hands in exasperation. She took two more steps backward shaking her head. She turned round and flew with the wind. I could hear her sobs fading away with each distance she covered.

I ended up being the MC at her wedding. The husband, my best friend was all smiles. I remember him asking me once if I love Kasham but I had waved it away. If only I had told him.

Kasham herself had this lost look. I feel her eyes boring into my back each time I turn to face the crowd.

I was the MC cum Bestman at my lover's wedding.

LiteratureThe Gambler (a Short Story) by FoxyFlow(op): 5:00pm On Mar 19, 2015
OLUKUNLE THE GAMBLER (A short story)

Kunle used the back of his palm to wipe off the sweat that had formed a bead on his head. He was in deep thought as he looked at the cards spread before him. Each was covered. To win N500 with N50, he had to flip the king over. Now he doesn't know if a king was among the cards spread before him. You can't just tell if the gamblers he was playing against were honest. Okay, no gambler is honest so scratch that.

"Guy you dey waste time, abi you want make another person play win?"

One of the two gamblers asked him. He was short, stocky and had a huge chest. On his face is a deep scar just below his eyes. He had been in a knife fight before. His partner was slim and lanky but he had this evil aura around him. His eyes were stone dead. Talk about a dead man walking. Now Kunle was at odds to play against these men.

"Make another person play then."

Kunle retorted.

Like magic, a dude which Kunle had paid little attention to sauntered over to them.

"I go like play."

Kunle looked at him. He was putting on a blue long-sleeve shirt which he tucked in neatly. His shoes were shiny like he just left the shoe-shiner's shop.

"How much own."

The short guy asked.

"100 naira for one thousand naira."

The long-sleeve dude replied coolly. This sounded too good to be true. Kunle's attention was brought back by the card setter.

"You see this king? Look am well well. Oya I don turn am."

He started moving the supposed king quickly in-between two other cards. Then stopped when he was satisfied that he had hidden it clearly. Kunle could swear that the king was at the center of the pack.

"Oya show me."

And viola, the long-sleeve dude pointed to the card at the center. It was turned over and right there was the king. Before Kunle's eye a thousand naira note changed hands.

"Oga you get luck o. You go like play again?"

The short gambler asked. The long-sleeved dude nodded his head. Right there another shuffling of card took place, again this dude won another thousand naira. It was just too good to be true.

"Oga play 500 naira take chop 5000 naira na."

The stoney eyed lanky dude requested. Kunle couldn't bear it anymore.

"Make I first play."

Kunle interrupted. Now the guy winning did not argue. He moved for Kunle to take his spot. This was surreal.

"Oga, make I try that 50 naira own."

Kunle requested. Flip, flop, flip, flop... Five hundred naira smiled it's way into Kunle's pocket. Kunle's heart was beating with anticipation. He had only fifty naira before and now he has five hundred and fifty naira. He did not waste time before going for another one.

Soon kunle had two thousand naira in his pocket. The stoney eyed dude that was silent all through the game came up with a suggestion.

"Guy, play for two thousand naira to win twenty thousand naira."

The world paused for Kunle. His mind went into a calculative mode. If he should win 20 thousand naira now, he would have enough money. That roasted chicken that mama Peter sells and the ever chilled bottle of beer sold in Mama Ada's shop would be a nice combo. Then he can also buy a pair of new shoes, get a hair cut, buy body spray and even give Ayipo, his akamu selling girlfriend more money to invest in the business.

"Oya now."

Kunle was set. The crowd which had gathered because of his previous screams were hailing him.

"Bring the two thousand naira first."

The short guy demanded unlike the first four games he had played. Unthinking, Kunle handed the money over. He waited with baited breath as the card was shuffled. This time the short dude did it faster and longer. Kunle was undeterred. His eyes kept following the card until...

"Why you press my nyash?"

A female voice sounded beside him. Just one second of losing concentration.

"Oya point the card."

Kunle pointed with confidence. The card was flipped open.

"Oh noooo"

The crowd went wild. It was the wrong card. Cold sweat broke out on the forehead of Kunle. The dream he just dreamt came crashing down.

"I wan go fifty naira own again."

The card was flipped again, this time faster. Kunle ended up losing. His stomach tightened. He just knew he would sleep hungry that night. To make matter worse, he still had a great distance to trek.

As Kunle moved sadly away, he looked behind him to see the long-sleeve dude laughing and returning the money he had won. Even the girl whose buttocks was pressed was also laughing with the gamblers.

Kunle swore never to gamble again. But right there in front of him, a voice screamed.

"Drop your old shoes and stand a chance of winning brand new ones."

Kunle stared at the tattered shoes on his feet.

Christianity EtcWho Farted??? A Day In Church..! by FoxyFlow(op): 8:40am On Mar 18, 2015
I looked around me as the stress on my bowels intensified and the sweat falling quickly from my open sweat pores turned into a mini shower splashing those who were seated right in front of me. They turned once or twice to look at me but seeing the agony on my face they faced their fronts without any single word. I had sat down in church that fateful morning watching the service with keen interest when it hit me.

At first I thought I wanted to fart, so I held onto the unwelcomed gas and kept look at the pulpit with rapt attention jotting down main points, so the gas deflated back into my system making me breath again with ease. I adjusted my buttocks and sat firmly on the opening of the gas chamber, any mistake here could result to multiple inter-lulu in motion which I cannot be deemed responsible for. Afterall, I had made up my mind to skip service that day. Mama had fed me the previous night with beans, baked beans to be precise and throughout the night my stomach had been upset, the gas building up but none coming out. I had woken up that morning with my stomach as round as a ball and making sound of a skin drum wen tapped on it gently.

''dum dum dum''.

I had quickly run to the toilet after my fifth brother came out, I even chanced my twin sister who is the elder of the two. Bathing on sundays occurs according to age grade and each of my brothers makes it a routine to debowel their systems before taking their bath proper.
I quickly pulled my trouser and sat on the toilet counting 1 - 50 and then using force to push the unwanted product from my system. Each effort was met with a brick wall. The poo was not forthcoming. I pushed and pushed and finally gave up when the pounding on the door intensified.

''Attai, na born you dey born abi you wan full suckaway with poo''

Chei, I jumped into the bath and quickly rushed my bath and found myself battling with the overdued poo and lots of fart right in the middle of a sermon. The first attempt to stop it had been a successful one. I thought all was over until it came back with a force stronger than the tsunami that no effort could send it back. I just sat there and compressed my anus and pressd it firmly to the plastic chair.

Having trapped the gas on the plastic chair, I made the great attempt of pushing the air back into my system but it was proving stubborn.

I was becoming wet under my armpit, the neck of my shirt too was soaking and my hand shaky as I held the pen to the paper not jotting anything, I was fighting a battle.

''Guy, na poo get you for inside church o, see falling of hands abeg, your yelow fineboy skin no go help you today''

My mind whispered into my ear. I looked round to see if it was someone from behind me that had said it but discovered the faces behind me looking with rapt attention at the pulpit. A soft laugh followed by a rumbling sound in my stomach, loud enough for people to hear and strong enough to make me vibrate on my seat ocurd. I presd my buttocks the more down to the chair.

Raising my head, I saw eyes looking at me but ignored them and concentrated on not letting the fart out.

''Resist the devil and he will flee from thee''

The pastor seemed to be saying. I quickly braced myself and whispered a short prayer:

''I bind you spirit of fart and unwelcomed poo''

But instead of it to flee, it intensified. I paused and looked round again and this time, I made to get up, squeezing the opening of my anus tight, mistake could be deadly in this case.

''Bros, you dey block me''

A voice said from behind me. Eh, block wetin? I sat down dejectedly and waited for my chance to bolt. The distance between my position of sitting and the closest door was so far that I will not make it 5 meters before offloading the gas in the chamber.

''If you want to be born again, raise your hand up, bless you, stand up let me pray for you''

I did not wait for his statement to finish dropping before jumping straight up. Applause rang out for my seeming readiness to become born again.

''Come forward let me pray with you''

I was the first to reach the front.

''You see that pastor over there''

Which pastor again eh?

''Go with him, he has more word to share with you''

I doubled up and ran as fast as my joined legs plus tight anus could carry me. I made it first and as soon as the man moved towards the door, I rushed pass his and made it to the door.

Just as I opened my leg to cross through the door and hasten my steps, all hell was let losed. The sound, both in gun style and silent gases came forth with anger and all my effort to stop it proved abortive.

I ran and the sound followed me, I could feel little wet lumps in my trouser and as I turned back, I saw people falling down under the influence. I waited not.

And did I ever go back to hear the rest of the story??

My brothers came back home that day bruised and tattered.

A stampede had occurred to escape the gas from my gas chamber.

THE BRIGHT NIGHT 8 (The Valley of Death...)

Sounds from wind blowing through the pine trees created a hollow sound in the night. The hooting owls were at the top of their melody. If it was the presence of death that was so pervasive or the mating season, nature knew not. Crickets had hushed up for the night. The night, that night was no place for chirping. The cold air accompanied by a tingling sensations was enough to make one go mad with fear. No animals crawled that night, even the bats refused to leave their caves. Death was spelt everywhere.

Once in a while there was a silent thud on the ground. Fruits fell, dry leaves fell, even crawling plants suddenly lost grip to the trees they had entwined and fell.

"The forest reeks of the presence of death."

The eyeless girl said turning to Ezinne. Ezinne still wobbled as the reality of how she looked like was finding time to sink in.

"When will daylight come?"

She brilliantly avoided conversing about death with the eyeless one.

"Daylight just passed. The moment you screamed, daylight came and went."

The eyeless one replied.

"But there was no sign."

Ezinne persisted. The eyeless girl only chuckled deeply. Her temper was rising and falling like the waves at sea. None had dared question her in such manner.

"This is the sign."

Her hand shot forward. On her bleeding palm was a human ear. This made Ezinne cringe backward.

"The only time we can't be seen is during the day."

Ezinne was not satisfied with the answer. A fresh human ear which wasn't in the eyeless one's possession initially perturbed her.

"Where did you get that ear..."

Ezinne had not finished her question when the eyes of the girl turned flashy red. Her hair stood in spikes with several snake heads hissing from an opening in her neck. Her sewn lips had miraculously loosen itself revealing huge sharp teeth. Her height too changed from the feeble little eyeless girl to a muscular monster. On its waist were several penis.

"SILENCE!!!"

The voice sounded like the clapping of thunder. The ground vibrated with the dying fire suddenly burning bright red like fuel was poured into it.

"You ask too many questions."

The little eyeless girl said in a sweet soft voice, a voice that had a cold edge to it. The fire no longer burned bright red. It had turned pale green. Those who sat round about it had moved far from it. Each of them wrapped their hands around their quaking body. The night had suddenly turned freezing cold.

Ezinne herself was thrown far to her face from the little girl. The transformation had been sudden and swift. It felt like a quick flash imagination to Ezinne. As her head cleared, she tried to pick herself up. The little girl was beside her in no time and offered her a bloody hand to grasp. Ezinne stood up shakily. She tried to speak but her voice was hoarse. She cleared it but her voice still sounded harshly above a whisper.

"Where is the ear?"

A quick smile passed over the contorted face of the little girl. She stretched her other hand and handed over the ear to Ezinne. Ezinne held the ear turning it from side to side. The supposed vision she had had lingering in her memory. She just knew that treading with caution would do her more good.

"The ear..."

She looked into the bleeding eyes. Those eyes that had glowed in her vision. Her eyes darted to the others who had crammed themselves together in a bid to keep warm. She wondered if they ever spoke.

"How did you get it?"

Her voice shook. She waited for another transformation but was disappointed. Instead the little eyeless girl replied her in the clearest of terms.

"I took it off the head of a human that trespassed the forest."

This came as a surprise. What human was she speaking off. Ezinne knew better than to press her luck. But the eyeless girl wanted to speak and speak she did.

"Humans have mobilised themselves and have entered into the forest. They want to hunt down what it is that is killing off people in the forest."

Ezinne was excited. She felt she would finally be rescued. She tried to hide the excitement from her voice.

"Where are they?"

The eyeless girl turned and walked some steps towards the others before replying.

"I have lead them into the valley of death."

THE BRIGHT NIGHT 7 (Destiny...)

What do you call destiny
A story with an ending
Telling of travails long felt
Emotions mildly dealt
By feelings unwarranted
Pulses often blanketed

Tales of pains and tears
Dark grins and evil jeers
Tomtom resounding
Tempers absconding
A vacant feeling in the soul
Nature's cruellest blow

Dazed and panting abound
In tears you doth drown
Slowly making a promise
A sacred parchment lease
Never again ....
Never again ....

*******************

As the day dragged on the parties came to a stream. Its colour changed from black to red then colourless. Igirigiri lifted his hand and the men paused. Each of them panting from the weight they had borne for so long a distance. None of them complained once for vengeance had already beclouded their souls. Dark vengeance at that.

"This is where we bury the men, right here on the bank. When we are done, we will make a detour round the stream to the point we can jump over. The complexity of the stream cannot be toyed with. Each changing colour represents a painful death which I cannot wish on a sworn enemy."

A hush like cold water fell on the men. If they were relieved, they did not show it. Instead they set out to work immediately. They dug four graves, each ten feet deep that the men digging had to be pulled out from them using tree branches. This they did on the precaution that an epidemic might spread to the people.

"Amukulo, get me a guord full of sap from the abudura tree."

Igirigiri motioned to one of the men who immediately ran into the bush. He picked up a guord from where they had left their things when they wanted to start digging the graves.

"Let's lay the men to rest. Our journey begins here. If we see this river again then we succeeded. If not, the priest would be right."

Such words were not meant for the heart of weak men. It was both lifting and discouraging at the same time. The men who already had an inkling of what they would face had already prepared their minds. Soon they began dropping each of the corpse into the graves dug. They were lowering the body of John into the earth when they had a blood-letting scream.

The voice was Amukulo's. The men dropped the body quickly and ran into the bush each armed with a machete in the direction the cry had come from. They had not gone very far when they had a plea.

"Get away from me. No... Don't come near me."

Igirigiri took the lead only for them to meet Amukulo sprawled under the abudura tree. He was bleeding from a cut in his head with his left ear visibly missing.

"Amukulo... Amukulo... Did you scratch your scrotum while on top of the tree."

Igirigiri asked looking intently at him while his hand rummaged in his hunting bag.

"I did. The itchy feeling persisted. I tried resisting but it seemed a thousand ants were having a feast on my sack."

Amukulo replied in pain then added.

"A little girl with gouged out eyes and bleeding fingers pushed me. Not after something hit me on the head twice. I think I lost an ear."

Igirigiri brought out a powdery substance from his bag which he blew in the four directions of the wind. He then sprinkled some on Amukulo before extending an arm for him to grab.

Back at the river the bleeding man was attended to. His ear was washed with the black part of the water when it changed. This dried up the blooding immediately leaving that part shrivelled. His head was dressed with a special herb that was dipped into the red part of the water.

At the end the men all got ready to go.

"You shall stay here and wait out our return. If by chance we did not come after tomorrow's first light, return to the village. Tell the priest he is right. But if we do, run ahead of us and behead the priest."

Amukulo was thus addressed by Igirigiri. Amukulo stood and watch the men walk up the river bank. The dying sun danced reddish as it set on the backs of the departing men.

THE BRIGHT NIGHT 6 (A Glimpse into the Past... Part 1)

A bowl filled with red liquid was passed to the kneeling man.

"Drink this. You need it."

The man collected and drank it.

"Now your final test will begin. If you succeed you will drink from the cup of immortality. But if you fail, perdition awaits you on the other side. Your eternity will be with Satan, the master. You won't serve as a servant but as a slave."

Laughter rang out from the men who formed a pentagram around the man. Each of them stood at a pointed end of the star.

"We curse you with the curse of Azembada. You will look for death and not find. What you cherish the most will you kill without remorse. Until the time be ripe for the great war. Amargeddon."

The men said these with two fingers pointed at the man. Odourless powder was sprinkled on the man before their leader made the final proclamation.

"Return when the fifth star overtake the first star."

The with a final wave of his hand continued.

"I banish you into the hinter part of the earth. None shall remember you when you are gone. May success be at your back and failure before you. Be gone!!"

******************

"You are a useless woman. How can you stoop so low?"

A male voice screamed with bitterness. The voice of a crying woman could be heard in the background.

"Are you just going to lie down there without saying anything?"

The man screamed. A female scream followed by the sound of plates rattling gave the night a charged atmosphere. Neighbours only listened intently, nobody interfered. This wasn't the first time that Chinelo's husband accused her of adultery.

"Will my death prove me innocent of what you accuse me of? Obimu?"

Chinelo's voice came half pleading, half screaming. It was laced at the edges with unshed tears.

"You are an evil woman, always wanting to talk your way through your infidelity. Today marks the end of your rendezvous."

Her husband shouted. This was more than washing their dirty linen in public.

"My husband, I only went for prayers."

The woman said with a broken voice.

"Prayers eh. Tell me, why would you go for prayers? What is it that we lack that you went to pray for? Why didn't you tell me to accompany you."

Too many questions.

"We've been married for 5 years now with nothing to show for it. Your family members are breathing down my neck. Don't you think I should do something about it?"

This seem to get the man infuriated the more.

"The priest. Sleeping with the priest will open your womb? My God, you are truly a slut. You are leaving my house tonight."

"I beg you my husband, he only prayed for me. Don't throw me out. It is late already."

There was movement at the door as it opened. Chinelo was pushed into the night. She had nothing on save her nightie. She banged the door continuously but the husband remained adamant. He did not bulge. He only rushed outside when he heard his wife scream painfully.

The wife was nowhere to be found. He made a run round the house but did not find her.

"Chinelo... Chinelo..!"

He shouted his heart pounding. He feared the worst had happened. Regret began welling up within him.

"Please answer me."

He shouted pleadingly. A sound at the far end made him look up. Right there in the distance, two unblinking red glows beheld him. A snare escaped from the glow before it vanished. Like it was never there.

The man ran into the house and grabbed a torch. Its powerful beam went right to where he had seen the red glows. Dancing shrubs stared back at him. Something had definitely been there.

"I forgive you Chinelo. Ifunanyam, please come back."

His voice was broken and tears laced the edge. The beam of his torchlight fell to the ground in front of him. Just then he knew. It was already too late, a blood trail led into the forest.

THE BRIGHT NIGHT 5 (Whispers...)

"What could have happened to this men?"

Nnamdi the palmwine tapper asked. His arms akimbo.

"You ask questions like you are under the influence of your own wine."

Nkapi the drunkard replied. He was finding it hard to maintain a firm footing as he kept swaying from right to left. It is only Nkapi that gets drunk and stays drunk every minute of the day. How on earth would one be so drunk early in the morning? Rumours even had it that the only time he is sober is when he is asleep. At least he doesn't sway around.

"It is against the rules of salesmanship. You don't consume your product."

Nnamdi answered with an impatient wave of his hand.

People gathered in little clusters discussing what they had just seen. It was a first time occurrence to find those who had gone for a search - dead.

"What of the other members of the search party?"

Someone obviously thinking loud asked. Murmurs was heard from different people. Each trying to say where he or she believes the other members of the search party are.

"They should be in their bed sleeping."

"No, they can't be asleep, virtually everybody is here."

"I believe the same fate befell them."

"I don't think so, their bodies should also be here."

"My friend what are you saying. Don't you know history? This is the first time that the dead have been flung into the open. This is also the first time that members of a search party are turning up dead."

The last statement appeared reasonable as sounds of approval can be heard. And as if to back up the statement, Igirigiri, the overall leader and head-hunter came outside from within a thicket. He stood there much to the astonishment of the people as other men trooped out. When they were done coming out, he waved his hand and the road which had opened through the thicket mysteriously closed.

This drew "ahhs" from the people.

The men made their way to where the people gathered. Each had a sorrowful look on his face.

"Ahhh... Abu a che le ke?"

It was a warriors cry.

"A mo enya abobule kuma leku me."

The men stood in a crescent shape formation looking at their dead colleagues. Each one had his eyes turned up. Nobody knew what it was they were looking at.

"An abomination. A taboo. A heresy. An unforgivable sin."

This came out in a sing-song manner.

"Your deaths shall be avenged."

The head hunter finally shouted. This drew cheers from the crowd. It was the first time that a search party was going to confront the evil in the forest.

"Leave vengeance to he who have the power to avenge."

A murmur of disapproval swept through the crowd. It was the priest that spoke. His church is located close to the forest. The girl who had gone missing is his daughter.

Ezinne.

"You cannot fight against something you have no power against."

The priest said coming close to the men. A space was made for him to pass. From the bag slung over his shoulder he took a little bottle. Holy water. This he sprinkled on the dead bodies whispering inaudible prayers. When he was done, he brought out four wooden crucifix which he laid on the chest of each men. That was the normal ritual that was performed for anyone who had died in the forest.

The priest turned to leave then paused. He looked hard at the head hunter one last time.

"The evil is greater than the night. The day is lesser than the evil. It is an unequal war. Let the night and day sought themselves out."

And with that he walked in uneasy steps towards his church.

If the head-hunter heard him, he did not act, instead he picked up dry leaves. He grounded them to dust with his hand and spread them over the dead men. One by one the other men came together. They all stood over the body of their colleagues, picked them up and made their way back into the forest.

THE BRIGHT NIGHT 4 (And Suddenly...)

Ezinne was surprised at what the eyeless bleeding girl said. If her voice could be called speaking.

"I can't save you again if you go unconscious."

Her voice still came forth. Ezinne looked at the girl and would swear that she saw a smile pass across her sewn lips.

"Who are you?"

Ezinne's voice shook with her body which also vibrates visibly.

"You don't want to know."

The voice sounded softer. This gave Ezinne a little confidence.

"Why did you save me?"

The little girl instead of answering turned and pointed. Ezinne followed her blood sputtering finger with her gaze. It fell on the people who were seated round the dying fire. The first person turned. Ezinne nearly choked as she held herself from screaming. What she saw wasn't a face, no. It was a blood fountain. A deep gash stood where the face was supposed to be. The eyes, nose and upper part of the mouth missing. In their place was bloodied pieces of flesh hanging. The lower lip was missing, just an exposure of broken teeth. Blood flowed freely from the hideous wound. Ezinne wondered how he survived.

"That's Anzaku, he went missing fifteen years ago. Only a blood trail was found with a tooth on the ground. He was on his way to the moonlight play."

As if on cue he faced his front. The second person turned. A gasp escaped Ezinne's mouth. He had a head alright but his forehead was missing. His brain could be seen visibly without a huge chunk. His ear also wasn't in its place.

"That's Pius. He went missing the very next full moon. Nothing was seen or heard of him by the village. And to say he is the steward to the village priest."

The small girl heaved then pointed her bleeding finger at another. It had a long hair and was obviously a lady. She turned. Her face showed no life as her eyes just stood there cold staring at Ezinne. She had a slight chin bone and could be called beautiful. Ezinne sighed, at least this one is complete. She thought in her mind.

The eyes of the lady with her head suddenly fell down. It rolled a little bit from the woman with blood gushing out where her neck was supposed to be. It was a bizarre sight to behold. The headless lady's finger felt around and picked up her head, fixed it back on her neck. One eyeball was missing. Her fingers felt around her until she found it and returned it back to the socket. Ezinne whose hair had stood on its end finally understood why the lady's face was devoid of expression.

"That's Chinelo. Her husband chased her out of the house on grounds of adultery on a full moon. The last thing that was heard of her was a piercing scream."

And once again those bloodied finger pointed. Ezinne refused to look, she had seen enough. She tried to turn and face the little girl but found out she couldn't. Instead she found herself staring into a gaping hole. A huge hole with blood gushing out right in the chest of a little child. Apparently his heart was missing. Tears flowed ceaselessly from his eyes with his lips bent in a sad manner.

"That's little Kelvin. He ran away with the plate of food he and his younger brother was eating. It was greedy on his part though. It was a full moon. An empty plate was found. He must have finished the food before he went missing."

The little boy turned back and faced the fire. Ezinne looked at the small girl who looked back at her. Those unblinking eyes socket frightened her.

"Why did you show me all these people?"

Ezinne managed to ask.

"So you would know and accept your fate."

Came the reply.

"What fate?"

Ezinne asked curious.

"This..."

The girl rushed towards Ezinne grabbing her by her leg. At that same instance Ezinne found herself staring into a giant mirror. She was stark naked. Her arms hung in front of her with her fingers bent in a claw-like manner. Her mouth stood open in a silent scream and when she looked down, a rotten penis dangled from her vagina with worms falling out.

She screamed...!

THE BRIGHT NIGHT 3 (A Walk in the Dark...)

"A night in the dark my friend
In a tunnel with no end
Demons would hover
Fangs all bared out
Your scream will do nothing
Only the soothing pains of death
This too will not come
Not until you plead...
Plead for your own death"

****************
Blood dripped from a severed head slowly into her mouth, tickling down the sides. The head hung from a latch attached to a ceiling. A ceiling that cannot be seen as it appeared endless.

Ezinne turned and opened her eyes to behold the head so close to her face. It was as if it was preparing for a kiss. Her heart missed a beat but this time darkness did not descend. No matter how hard she tried to avert her eyes from looking, it was still fixed intently to the head.

The severed head whose eyelids were shut made a movement. It blinked. This caught Ezinne by surprise. She tried to move but her body was immobile. The loud pounding of her heart could be heard a mile away. The eyelid of the head fluttered open. It blinked before fixing its gaze on Ezinne.

"Hello Ezinne, ke du?"

A smile passed its face. It was Okoro's head. Ezinne couldn't contain it anymore. She screamed. Her mouth hanging open. The head too as if acting scared screamed too. Maggots, in their hundreds fell from its mouth into Ezinne's own. Ezinne kept screaming as she felt the movement of the maggots down her throat. Some of them struggled into her using her nose while others just crawled nonchalantly over her face.

Ezinne blacked out.

"You shouldn't be here you know..."

A voice spoke in the darkness. Ezinne jerked her head up. She was in a squatting position. Her back was resting on a padded wall. A whimper escaped her lips as she heard the sound of clattering metals some distance from her.

"Why did you wander away?"

This time the question sounded urgent. Ezinne knew not whether to answer or not. She sat tear-eyed and scared.

"Why did you wander away?!"

There was an edge in the voice.

"I was going to the moonlight play."

Ezinne replied the darkness. A soft laughter filtered through the darkness.

"A moonlight play of exploration with your lover?"

Silence preceded this question. The voice sounded like it was thinking loud. Ezinne groped in the dark, feeling around her. The ground was wet, sticky liquid met her searching fingers.

"You should never walk in the dark alone."

The voice came out clean this time, right beside her. A clicking sound was heard and light came on. Horror stared Ezinne in the face. She had been leaning on human parts impaled to the wall. She stood up abruptly. Her leg was covered in blood. Blood that flowed in abundance from the mutilated bodies.

The ceiling too had blood dropping from it on Ezinne. She looked up to see human bodies with missing heads hanging upside down. She screamed this time and made for the only door she could see. The wall she had lean on too moved with her, the hanging arms suddenly coming to life. As she got to the door, the blood on the ground had risen up to her knee. The door was jammed, something wedged the handle from outside.

She struggled with the handle, pushing and pulling. Turning the knob to see if it would open. The wall was closing in fast. It was already so close when the door suddenly opened and a force yanked her from the room.

Right in her front with smoke around her stood the little girl, back at the village square. Her hand was extended towards Ezinne. Her fingers were missing with blood gushing out intermittently from the wound.

"Ezinne... Nwamama.."

Her lips did not move, yet the voice was clear. Ezinne found herself staring into the little girl's empty bleeding eye sockets.

"Please try to remain conscious."

THE BRIGHT NIGHT 2 (The Lonely Path...)

The wind had this icy feeling that sent shivers down the spine of Ezinne. She had wandered off into the forest all in a bid to get to the moonlight plays. The cloth on her barely helped as wave after wave of icy coldness hit her. The moon on its own seemed to draw closer to the earth to provide more light for the girl.

"Little girl..."

A soft voice, clear, just above a broken radio called. Ezinne stopped. She turned around but what she saw was a darkness and black beyond comprehension. Bushes looked clustered together hiding the path she had taken.

She knew the road well for it led to both the stream and the village square. There was a forked path at the end of the road, each leading to different destinations. The footpath was wide enough to carry three people without them grazing their shoulders against each other. But tonight, it was so thin. So thin that the bushes at both sides of the path rubbed against her body.

"Ezinne nwamama..."

This time Ezinne was sure of what she had heard. The voice was feminine. Standing rooted to a spot fear swelled up in her. She opened her eyes wider in an attempt to see right through the darkness. A futile attempt it was.

"Kihihihihi...!"

A child's laughter passed so close to her ears she felt the hot breath on her neck. She spun around only to see darkness staring her hard in the face.

Knowing fully well that standing there wasn't going to help her, she turned and ran. Through the tiny path with a destination in her mind. The village square. There where the moonlight plays would be held. Where she had planned to meet Okoro. Okoro who was to come with a wrapper so they could continue exploring their sexuality far from the plays.

Of a truth, she had no feelings for Okoro. What she felt was lust. Lust for his strong arms and broad hairy chest. She wanted to feel his throbbing manhood deep inside her honeypot. The thoughts alone before she left the house had made her wet. But now as she ran through the forest, only regrets rang in her head.

The path kept thinning out with no forked path in sight. Instead bushes and shrubs rubbed against her face as she ran.

Suddenly she burst into a clearing. The village square. But instead of the sounds of clapping and dancing, silence hung on the air. People sat around a dying fire, all of them looking whitish in colour. Like nzu (local chalk) had been smeared in abundance over their body.

"Ezinne... Nwamama"

Her name rang out from within the seated people holding hands. Ezinne turned but thickets without an opening greeted her. The way she had taken having mysteriously disappeared. The moon itself had gone dim giving the place a ghoulish appearance.

Ezinne had no option than to begin walking towards the people.

"You shouldn't be here, you know."

A child's voice said to her. She turned sharply to see a little girl. Blood flowed from her eyes, her nose appeared severed. Her lips sown together.

Ezinne's heart missed a beat as darkness descended on her.

THE BRIGHT NIGHT (An Epic Tale)

Nobody knew what happened to the little girl until her body was found. She had gone out to play at night when the moon was fullest and the shadow of trees looked like giant masquerades on the ground. She was found with her eyes wide open and her mouth open in an apparent scream of death. Her fingers were bent claw-like and put in front of her. It appeared she fought whatever it is albeit vainly, that had snuffed the life out of her.

The men who had found her were among the search party dispatched when Ezinne did not return home. When they found her body, it was lying face down. The dogs that had sniffed her out all yelped and ran away when they came close to her. Even the men felt an evil force surround them.

A wooden stretcher was quickly made to convey her body back to the village. A surprise though and an evil one for that matter awaited them. As they tried lifting her up, two men to hold her head and the other two her legs, something fell from within her skirt. The searching light of the men found it to be a cluster of worms. Dark and smelly.

"God protect us..."

The shortest amongst the men uttered. It was the first word that had gone around them. The same man picked a stick which he used to raise the skirt of the dead girl up.

"Broooooaaaaaa"

Two out of the four men doubled over immediately in a vomiting fit. In between Ezinne's leg was a decaying penis. This further compounded the problems of the men. Her death appeared more physical than spiritual.

"We need to get going John."

The leader of search party pointed his light at John. John was busy helping the two men who vomited back to their feet.

"I have this strange feeling. I think there is an eye watching us."

John said as the men all took their positions at the head and foot of the stretcher.

The moon which was bright became a shade darker. The branches of the trees also started shaking from side to side with no apparent wind blowing.

"You have a wild imagination John."

The shortest man told him.

"No, I feel the presence of eyes too."

The man who had been silent spoke out. He took a deep breath and pointed.

"Over there."

The men all looked and truly there was a pair of eyes watching them. The leader stopped dead on his track.

"They are apparently fireflies about to mate."

The leader said hoping that the men would laugh. It wasn't to be because at that same moment the two tiny red glows blinked at them and melted into darkness. The glows had stood some feet away from them. Right there on the same footpath they would take. The men had nothing to defend themselves with in case it was a wild animal. They only had their battery powered torches with them.

"Ahhhhhhhhh...!!!"

A painful cry ripped through the trees behind them. The same time, their torch-lights went out. Instead of the men to help this time, they all had one thought in mind. They ran. All blinded by fear and darkness. They stumbled and fell but still stood up to continue running. The only thought in their minds was the clearing before the forest. Each man ran a single race oblivious of the other behind or before him.

John arrived at the clearing first. Then the leader, followed by the silent one. The short man arrived last. The moon that had gone dim started shining bright again like a cloud had gone over it.

Right there in the moonlight, in the midst of the men stood Ezinne. Her head hung to a side, her arms stretched in front of her, her claw-like fingers pointed at the men.

The next morning the men were found. Dead. All naked with a decaying penis stuck to their anus. Their mouth hung open in a silent scream with their claw-like fingers pointed right in front of them.

The dead girl was not among the dead.
