"Alpha.. Alpha... Fox throttle..."

"Mozat... Mozat... Kalish... Kalal..."

"Umbra... Dumbra... Barba... Sandra..."

Different codes were flying about through different channels. Communication was a little bit sketchy but people still communicated all the same. Nobody had anticipated what had happened. For the first time in the history of Nigeria, a meteorite had found its way into the Nigerian space. It had flashed through the night sky and had imploded deep in the mangrove swamp in far away Ogun state.

The military took the operation from the beginning with helicopters flying into the air and tracing the line that was left by the burning stone. That night in the control room nobody slept. Communications did not only occur within the country but also between neighboring countries. Even China was involved in the search. The search for a stone that had fallen into a village buried deep in the mangrove swamp.

Abdallah adjusted his floating robe. He was troubled. The signs he had seen was not the best of signs. Tried as much as he could, he still felt a vacuum in his chest. He had summoned the gathering of the brethren. Brothers with whom for centuries he had stood with and fought side by side against invasions from hell. This wasn't the first time that the dark side had tried to enslave mankind.

"Azuum... You pace up and down. Why don't you calm down?"

His inner mind told him. Abdallah shrugged. This wasn't the first time his mind was saying this to him.

"I know but I never expected it to be so soon."

He replied himself. There was a brief mirthless laughter from inside.

"Me too. I must say I was caught unprepared. When is the brotherhood assembling?"

Abdallah walked into his room straight to the mirror. Instead of his broad shoulder and wild eyes, an old wizened man stared back. He was cloaked in a brief shawl.

"Right about now... Is there anything you would want me to tell them?"

Abdallah asked his old reflection in the mirror.

"Nothing. This isn't like the previous war."

Agbigbi village perished on one night. There was no fire, there was no earthquake, just corpses littering everywhere. When the special unit dispatched by the Nigerian Army arrived, there was little they could do about the dead and the dying. Every house they ventured into either had dead people pointing to the ceiling or dying people with frightful faces pointing upwards.

Like a thief Trascilla had stolen into the village. When he was banished from heaven along with Satan and the rest of the fallen, he had found no pleasure to come to earth or create his abode in the other heavenly bodies. Instead he had hung in space like a bad omen waiting to spell doom for mankind. He had launched quiet a number of attack on metal birds created by men to transport them speedily but never had he thought of coming to earth to satisfy his lustrous desires.

Trascilla came down with burning hydrogen gas, his course directed wide off where he knew the priced possession of Satan dwelled. On landing, he had wanted to disguise himself but for the young men who had seen him land.

"Na which kind witch be this?"

One of them had asked as he laid naked his wings having shredded off on impact.

"Na today e own don end na.."

Another replied. What had followed was screams and blood spilling everywhere and as soon as it had hit him, the taste of blood, Trascilla had gone into a frenzy. The end product was what the elite unit of the Nigerian Army had found.

"Alpha... Do you read me? Code orange... I repeat, code orange... Send in evac and bring in ambulances, l think we have a situation in our hand... Over..."

That night Ali felt his soul leave his body. He found himself walking on a lonely road devoid of humans, just statutes of creatures he had never seen. Some had horns as long as a pole wire with eyes so red one can't stare at it for long. Others had wings that ended in sharp spikes. To compound matters, the ground he walked on was not solid. It was soft at some point and at others hard. This made his step wobbly.

As Ali walked in wonder and amazement, a bright light fell in front of him. At first he froze, his heart frozen with fear. But as he stood staring at the light, he began to make a form out of it. Yes, it was her for he had seen her over and over again. There she was lurched forward, he palms covering her face while her body danced to the spasm of tears. This time her cloth was not red but a mixture of purple and green, giving off a light that appeared ghoulish.

One step and Ali's heart unfroze. The blood in his veins began flowing and the silent thudding of his heart had turned into an excited rigmarole. Though the ground still had the soft hard feel underfoot, Ali still drove forward. With each step, the light became brighter causing Ali to shield his eyes with his hand. Though the light has this welcome feel to the skin, it was bright enough to penetrate through a closed eyelid making one see bright red with a tinge of yellow in the center.

Ali had gotten so close that he could almost feel her when there was a clap of thunder. The sound was like an explosion that threw Ali to the ground. The soft ground itself could not hold unto Ali's weight, for it gave way plunging Ali to an everlasting fall. Ali opened his eyes but all he saw was darkness, darkness so thick he felt its claws scratching his skin. Below Ali saw a rapidly burning flame that drew closer with each passing moment. Ali screamed as the flame embraced him in a hug.

"Is this an epileptic fit? I can't see the regular thick white saliva?

A female voice said.

Ali opened his eyes to see a middle aged woman peering into his face. Her hair was tied in a bun while her face squeezed in deep concern. Ali turned to his side to see cars driving by without bothering to slow down. As he pushed himself to seat up the woman extended her hand and helped him up. Ali was covered in sweat and his eyes still have this empty look like he was trying to recall where he is.

"Are you alright my son?"

The middle aged woman was asking continuously while Ali sat regaining his energy. Soon he was able to nod his head.

"What happened?"

Ali shook his head in the negative to depict nothing but he could remember alright. He had just arrived the city from his village, Kokawa, and was wandering about. He was looking at the fast cars, the tall buildings and the fact that everyone moved quickly like they were in a rush for an appointment. Ali had more than once been jibed at because of his slow movement. Yes, he walked like one who just landed on the moon, slowly and cautiously. He was navigating a bend when he had to jump aside limply because of a bicycle on a neck breaking speed. There the vision had hit him.

"Where are you going to?"

The middle aged woman with a pleasant face asked.

"I don't have a destination. I just arrived and I seek a place to work."

Ali managed to answer.

"Stand up and come with me."

No argument, nothing. Ali just stood up and allowed the woman direct him while holding his hand like a toddler. Underneath his feet still felt soft and wobbly.

Mosaukka stood with fumes coming out of his nose. He looked on with disdain at the spiralling pleading people making their way to hell. From highly religious leaders to low peasants who had committed evils in their life time. He was not in the mood of thrusting them with spear or pouring them acid. Instead he allowed them easy access to the boiling flame after the mouth of the cave. As each person passes through, what follow is a blood curling scream but this only gave Mosaukka pleasure.

He had wrapped himself with his wings and was grinning from ear to ear but what the damned souls saw was a ferocious growl. Mosaukka kept looking at them until a figure caught his eyes. Keyara, a woman he had so lust after. Because he played not the role of a succubus, he could not have her. How come she came to hell? Mosaukka felt a staring and a little pity. He couldn't help her. She walked past him into the ocean of fiery wails beneath him.

Amir Moustafa just finished the third round of prayers. He had checked inside the pouch which had been handed down to him by Amir Zula, in it was the tender eggs of a thorny chameleon. Immediately it came in contact with his skin, Amir Moustafa found himself in a strange dark room. This room was dimly lit by a reddish glow emanating from a stone. As the glow came, a sound like the throttling of a car followed. Sweat had formed and was slowly making its way down the spine of Amir Moustafa.

This wasn't the first time that Amir had found himself in such strange dark room. The last time, he had felt a finger go round his throat and had choked him. Even though he could hold the invisible hand, he could not separate its grip on his neck. His lungs had exploded with stars flashing in his eyes. Just when he thought he would cross into everlasting light, the grip had suddenly vanished. He found out that he was in his kneeling position right in his palour and the girl Amina was sleeping peacefully beside him. The next day he had found evidence of reddened skin. The grip had translated from the spiritual into the physical realm.

As Amir Moustafa looked at the glowing ember, his stomach constricted. The air became heavy with invisible smoke. Sulphur and a burning smell he could not decipher clouded his breathing. The stone glowed brighter as Amir Moustafa doubled over grasping his stomach. Suddenly the light disappeared replaced by a stillness and a presence so evil Amir refused to lift his head up.

"Moustafa...!"

Amir shuddered. It was the unmistakable voice of his mentor and father Amir Zula. Amir Moustafa still kept his head down.

"Moustafa, what business does the living have with the dead?"

It was the same catch phrase his mentor had always used to correct him.

"Forgive me father. I am troubled."

"Troubled? And the only place to bring your worries to is hell?!"

The voice probed becoming a pitch louder. This constricted Amir Moustafa's stomach the more. He groaned, turned and tossed. He could feel a thick liquid making its way down his nose, past his lips. He tasted his own blood.

"I had no option father."

Amir replied. The evil presence drew closer and soon Amir Moustafa felt a sharp object probing his throat upward. He lifted his head and opened the eyes he had shut due to pain. Right before him two tiny emblem stared back. The eyes stared past his eyes deep into his soul. He felt himself stripped naked by the eyes.

"Are you Satan?"

Amir stuttered. A smile creased the feature of the creature, almost a snarl. Its eyelid remained up but another flicked over the two glowing coals that served as its eyeballs.

"I am but a messenger of Satan, my master."

Amir stared. The voice with which the creature had spoken belonged to Amir Zula but its features could strike fear in the devil himself. The was a gentle rumble from the throat of the creature, a shallow laughter. The snarl on its face had turned to a pleasant smile.

"None can strike fear in the heart of my master. You ugly humans don't know what beauty is. I am the most lovely of all my master's messengers."

"Since you can read my mind, I don't think I need to open my mouth to speak."

Amir said from within him. The creature nodded.

"I seek audience with your master."

Amir Moustafa who had finally gotten a little gut proclaimed. He fell down immediately like one who bones had been broken. Truly, for all his joints were on fire.

"You cannot walk to hell requesting to see the keeper you ugly, vile creature. I stand in his place and as it is, you run your transactions with me."

"I am dying..."

Amir managed to say with his mind. Immediately he felt succour. He never envisaged it to be so, never knew it would be this difficult and also painful.

"Who are you?"

Amir Moustafa managed to ask as he rose up painfully.

"I am Mosaukka"

The creature replied as it gently took the form of a man.

Amina went about her duties dutifully. Eight years had gone and she had grown into a blooming beauty. She had just little contact with her real family. The last time they came visiting was when she turned sixteen. Her mother and her younger brother stayed and chatted happily with her while her father had gone into the inner chambers with her teacher. The mother had also brought food for her from home. Her favourite damalele was kept in a separate food flask away from the remaining food.

When Alhaji Abdul had emerged, he appeared older than he had went in. His steps were slower and more deliberate and his gaze was more fierce. He had taken Malik by the hand and had gone to his car. The mother had quickly hugged her and ran after her father. Because she was forbidden from stepping outside, she could not follow them. That was the last she had seen of them but gifts constantly came from their side.

As Amina lifted the pot up from the fire and placed it on the pot holder, her gaze fell on the fire. The flame had suddenly turned green with the yellow flame forming the shape of a flower. She smiled. The invisible one had come calling. Even though he rarely speaks, he had given her flowers, left wrapped up gifts and had fanned her when she was asleep on hot nights.

She had told her teacher about all these occurrences but he had done nothing other than smile.

"This is the time when suitors begin to arrive."

Amir Moustafa had told her. When she turned to pick up a plate to scoop food into, a rose flower with a little red wrapped up gift pack greeted her. A white four sided paper was underneath. This she picked up smiling.

"To you Amina, the simbrel that brings melody to my existence."

Amina hugged the piece of paper to her heart, her eyes twinkling. From where he sat looking into the pot, Satan smiled, his eyes twinkling too. He sighed as he looked up, picked his pitch fork to continue tormenting the man that was bounded hand and foot before him.

CHAPTER ONE (A VISIT FROM HELL)
If the Devil, Satan had known that it would one day fall in love, he would have instead asked Eve out. Yeah, it would have been a little bit absurd but then the records would have been straight. A fallen angel snatching the first woman from her husband, the first man.

As Satan sat down staring into the odys, a magical pot that connected hell to the earth, he could not help but wonder how he had come to fall in love with Amina. Amina, pious, elegant, confident, dark and lovely had first caught his eyes when she was born. Unlike other female births he had witnessed, he hadn't seen something of that nature. First, the generator that was powering the hospital went off, ushering darkness into the theatre, then came a shrill cry before the light came on. The nurses had moved back in horror. For there before them was a child covered in birth blood holding onto the womb of its mother. The doctor had made the nurses go under oath not to reveal what they had seen that night. Satan himself marveled. What wickedness could be more than this? Having passage into the world but denying others passage.

As the child grew up, it wasn't different from other kids and tried as much as her parents did, they couldn't conceive a second time. They finally settled for adoption, adopting Amina's little brother Malik. Amina had turned out brilliant and had always been on top of her class both in academics and maturity. All the teachers marvelled at her ingenuity and not more than once had to leave the class when Amina bombarded them with questions they never imagined. Satan too was taken aback when Amina at the tender age of eight had asked her religious teacher why Satan had not apologised for his pride and gone back into singing in the heavenly choir. Malam Idi had looked at her both in fear and astonishment and had gone out of the class. That day a call was placed to her father Alhaji Abdul. When he arrived, the proprietor told him that Amina was possessed and was in no way fit to be in school. What should be done was to put her under the tutelage of a spiritual leader. That way, the demons raging inside of her will be chained down forever.

From Zamfara, her father had brought her to the city of Kano to study under a renowned scholar. At the sight of nine years old Amina, the scholar had immediately become enlightened on the dream he had had some nine years ago. Yes, he remembered it vividly how Satan had used the body of a damsel to gain access into the world and enslaved mankind forever. He had requested that Amina shows him her palms, this she did. On the right one, just slightly below her giant thumb, he could decipher the inscription, 666, written in what looked like blood mixed with fire. She was the fertile ground and Armageddon is to be begatted through her. Amir Moustafa had shuddered. He was not prepared for this. All his years of learning had also not prepared him. Now he has to work as a willing tool for Satan.

*************************
Ali toiled through the gutter he had been cleaning for some time. At fourteen he had known nothing of a mother's love. All he had know all his life was rejection, stigma and mental degradation. He was a little bit mentally unstable all thanks to his mother, Jumai, the village mad woman. Tales of how she became mad were plenty with none of them holding substance. Some had said she went out on the night of the sick moon to urinate under the giant baobab tree. A gini (jinn) had appeared to her and made love to her. The ferociousness and intensity to which she had orgasmed had affected her mental state. How else would one who just got mad and had not started roaming become pregnant exactly a month later?

Another tale carried by tale bearers was she had secretly swore to be a virgin before her father and a suitor and had been made to drink dudunna, a drink made from holy materials, diluted with honey. Exactly a month after, they had noticed changes in her. This was bad as it showed that she was never a virgin and had even known a man which had resulted in her pregnancy. This made her parents to disown and kick her out.

Jumai had wandered the village picking food only thrown into the village dung heap. Not more than once she had happened against fresh food. This pointed that someone took pity in her plight but none was able to openly show her care. This was to avoid being labelled an accomplice.

The sun was already getting ready to go into labour to give birth to the moon when Ali came out of the gutter. From his knee down were black sticky substances that had clung on him. He took the shovel he was working with and proceeded to the only borehole in the village. As he moved, he looked up and was surprised to see a donkey with a heavy load galloping with full speed towards him. Beside the donkey was a huge man with big arms flogging it ceaselessly. Ali screamed and jumped off the path before he was ridden over by the donkey. He had tripped. As he tried raising himself up, he heard voices.

"I think his madness comes with the reclining sun, if not, how else can a boy give such blood curling scream, squat and proceed to show the whole world his bare buttock through the tear in his shorts?"

One person was saying.

"May God forbid I or any of my relations give birth to this curse. I will personally strangle him."

Ali had had one of his numerous visions again for there was no galloping donkey neither was there a huge man. It was him squatting stupidly with his buttocks facing the sky. He stood up, dusted his body and proceeded to walk albeit cautiously to the village borehole.
