COJA SCAM LATEST
Why Obasanjo sacked Ben Bruce as NTA DG
*More heads to roll at NTA, Presidency
JACOB SEGUN OLATUNJI, Abuja
FOLLOWING the sack of the Director General of the Nigerian Television
Authority (NTA), Mr. Ben Murray-Bruce, at the weekend over the alleged
shoddy handling of the NTA/8th All African Games (COJA) multi-million naira
contracts, more jobs are said to be on the line at the two organisations and
the Presidency.

According to a highly placed presidency source, the sacked NTA boss was
accused of allegedly using a confidant to get President Olusegun Obasanjo to
sign a multimillion dollar contract of COJA without passing through the
appropriate channels.

The source revealed that this development became open when Vice-President
Atiku Abubakar as the chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of
COJA forwarded another proposal to President Obasanjo on a similar contract
which he signed, thus duplicating the contract.

While the NTA boss was said to have favoured the JVC Professionals (UK)
Ltd., Vice-President Atiku-led LOC was said to be backing the ACE Computer
System Ltd/Panasonic (SA) for the supply of broadcast equipment.

Already, Nigeria is said to stand the risk of losing over $100 million while
the JVC has instituted a £17 million suit in London against the NTA, the
COJA LOC and the Nigerian government for breach of contract.

Nigerian Tribune learnt that when the attention of President Obasanjo was
drawn to the development as reported by a journal in its last edition, he
was said to have fumed and vowed to deal with those behind it.
According to the Nigerian Tribune source, while the operatives of the
State Security Service (SSS) are said to have swung into action to get to
the root of the matter, President Obasanjo is also planning to set up a
probe panel on the matter.

President Obasanjo, it was learnt, was not happy about the alleged role
played in the matter by his close confidant and how the public would
perceive him despite his stand on corrupt practices. According to the
source, the President was also not happy on the alleged decision of the NTA
to go to the press without his knowledge despite the fact that the former
NTA boss had unfettered access to him, his family and the Vice President.

It was gathered that the Presidency fingered Mr. Ben Murray-Bruce as the
brain behind the story in a journal going by the way the entire story went,
including the comments of both the President and the Vice President as well
as the various memos that changed hands over the whole transactions.

President Obasanjo was said to have kept the decision to sack the NTA boss
top secret until it was formally announced to avoid being influenced again.

The source hinted that top officials of NTA and LOC of COJA, the Federal
Ministry of Information and the Presidency have been slated for questioning
over what they knew about the whole transactions.

President Obasanjo is said to be worried over what Nigerians and the
international community would be thinking about him on the development.

"To say the least, Baba is not happy about the whole mess. People will be
saying that is this how he has been signing double approvals or contracts
due to pressures from his confidants," the source said.

One of the principals, who spoke under anonymity, said that this is not the first time miscreants will be coming to violation school girls in Molete area in Ibadan.
"This is a kind of thing that has been happening in the school which was not revealed to the public. In fact, similar thing happened only two months ago," she said.

According him, efforts by the school’s authorities to beef up security at the school had not yielded positive result as hoodlums kept coming to the hostels to violation the girls.

Meanwhile, the assaulted girls are being treated at a hospital in Ibadan (names withheld), while the hospital management promised to conduct series of tests on them.

The Oyo State Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Bashiru Azeez, reacting to the incident, directed that security be beefed up at the school, while he urged the Police area commander to "fish out the rapists at all costs."

Celebrities / Olisa Adibua Of Beat FM Batters Junior Colleague (Pictures) by frankoko(m): 8:14pm On Sep 10, 2011
Olisa Adibua Batters Junior Colleague, Goes On Suspension

Olisa Adibua - the accused assaulter claims it's just a rumour

Popular entertainment phenom and OAP, Olisa Adibua has allegedly assaulted and severely injured a member of staff at the Lagos radio station, Beat FM/Naija FM, on Thursday, September 8, 2011.

We’ve been told the victim Adewunmi Oyekanmi, who works as a night editor at Naija FM, sister station to BEAT FM and Classic FM, suffered injuries to the head, face and body.

Adewunmi, sources say, was lying on the couch in the office to catch a nap in the wee hours of the fateful Thursday morning, having finished his duties.

Sighting the ‘body’, a livid Olisa pounced on the sleeping man with blows, allegedly going as far as using foreign objects to cause damage. The radio OAP and Programmes Director is said to have then thrown Oyekanmi out of the premises after destroying his phone and ripping his clothes. This was about 3am.

The victim, as well as several other sources confirm this to us, providing pictures, and incident details; while an undercover reporter had a recorded conversation (transcript below) with the victim.

The management has since stepped in- ensuring the victim gets treatment and taking disciplinary measures against Adibua. He was yanked off his usual morning show- The Morning Rush the following day (Friday September 9) as colleagues Fade and Douglas co-hosted the show. Adibua’s regular co-host Oreka Goddis, who’s currently a judge on Peak Talent Show, was away in Abuja.

Even though Olisa Adibua was actively at work last night; as compere at ‘The Beat of Lagos’ which held at Landmark Village in Oniru, Lagos, sources at the station tell us Adibua has been placed on an ‘indefinite’ suspension. Industry colleagues are, however, still peeved; hoping he’ll be shown the way out – permanently.

Some say it’s not the first time he’s assaulting junior colleagues, telling us he has verbally assaulted at least two staff members before now, including a married female staff of Classic FM, last year.

At least three OAPs at the Megalectrics-owned stations refused to comment when we contacted them, Friday. But one very senior staff, who pleaded for anonymity, ‘regretted’ the ‘very unfortunate event’; telling us the employee handbook is clear on office violence. Such staff, he says, according to the handbook, are to be dismissed.

A touching broadcast message sent early Friday by an aggrieved OAP from a government owned radio station, speaks loud enough: ‘Hi!  The guy on my DP is Dewunmi…he  works with a media house in Lagos. He was beaten to a pulp by his boss whose initials are O.A 2 days ago in the office. Please say no to battery and if you like pass it on till his station hears and fights for him. I will give you more details if you want’.

Another visibly upset OAP wrote on her twitter account @bukihq: ‘Where r our labour laws and who enforces them. Who protects d average Nigerian who doesn’t mind being beat up as long as he still has a job… An employee who is more afraid of losing his job than reporting assault – and how much is he being paid?…‘

She continues: ‘If it is not racism, then when a fellow Nigerian picks on another just cos he is a “big man” and above the law, what is it called?…Meanwhile what do you think will happen to him honestly if he reports this case? Its easy to tweet that he should – will u employ him?‘

Speaking with the General Manger at BEAT FM Deji Awokoya about the incident, the gentleman played down the news claiming no such incident took place. ‘It’s not true. There was nothing of such that happened here. It’s probably a rumour’, Awokoya hastily said in a telephone conversation.

Calls made to Olisa’s mobile by our reporters weren’t received or returned, however the Storm boss and Sings resident judge responded to our SMS enquiry over the incident. The accused Olisa threatened legal actions should our reporter publish the ‘rumour’.

Adewunmi was sent to the hospital with a paltry sum of N15, 000 given by the station Accountant. He has worked at the radio house for fifteen months. Olisa on the other hand has 21years television, radio and filming experience. He’s Director of Programmes at Megalectrics; owners of BEAT, Classic and Naija FM.

He’s also Director and co-owner of STORM 360 as well as a Resident Judge on the on-going Glo NaijaSings talent show.

We could not immediately confirm if the victim will be placing charges or if the case has been reported to the police.

Olisa Adibua joined Beat FM as pioneer Programmes Director, months after he was unceremoniously fired from Cool FM in 2008. Although we can confirm he was later recalled to Cool, he declined the offer choosing instead, to wait for the kick-off of Beat FM.

Beat FM, Naija FM and Classic FM are owned by Chris Ubosi’s company Megaletrics LTD.

Several OAPs told us, anonymously, that they’re waiting ‘to see where this matter will end’.

Below is a transcript of Adewunmi’s account of the Thursday incident as narrated over phone to an undercover investigative reporter:

‘I had already finished my work. It was about 2am and I was asleep on the couch. Not that he can beat me but just because I didn’t want to raise my hand on my boss, I allowed him. He brought a stone from downstairs came back and hit it on my head. Ali (a colleague) was trying to stop him but he threatened to sack him. Everybody’s crossed with me now that I didn’t raise my hand.  I could have passed on from sleep. I was dazed. I know the GM must have seen everything recorded on the camera (CCTV) when he resumed in his office in the morning. He (GM) was just begging me. I’ve been here one year and three months and I’ve never had any problem with anybody. That’s why everybody is shocked that it’s Dewunmi because they hardly hear my voice.

He (Olisa) can’t apologise now. He’s the boss. Someone went to meet him to say I’m injured but he didn’t say anything, he just left. I’ll just take it like that. He (Olisa) told me to go and call anybody I like that he will show me. He has shown me that I know nobody. I’ve left him in the hand of God. GM told him this morning that he’s wrong. I’m not going to tell the police, talk to the papers or go to court because of the image of the company.  Let him go and settle with God. He’s a boss. He has everything more than me. He has money and that’s what he’s trying to show me.

He smashed my phone on the ground. I borrowed this one from someone. Someone packed the pieces (of my phone) into a polythene bag for me and I’ve given it to the Accountant as evidence. I only took my SIM and that’s why I can use it now.  My phone was on the couch. He tore my clothes into shred. It was one of the drivers that gave me the shirt I wore to the hospital. I don’t know if he was drunk.  And it was in a corporate environment. This was before 3am in the morning. We have never had an issue before.  He even threw me out of the premise. I slept in one of the Keke Marwa’s parked outside the office. I later came in about 5.30, 6am when other people were beginning to arrive. He treated me like a common thief.  I was going to wait till 6, 7am when the day’s bright so I could go home.

They said they would take care of my medical expenses and buy my clothes back. I said they shouldn’t worry. When I was going to the hospital the financial director gave me N15, 000 to treat myself and I collected it. He said there was no money bla bla. It’s because I’m not an influential person. I’ll never forget the incident. I know God will fight for me in his own way. People were more disappointed because I’m an easy-going person.

Douglas was around but he didn’t say a word. I feel he was the one who called Olisa to tell him I was sleeping on the couch because up till now he hasn’t said sorry to me. I’ll take care of myself and resume on Sunday. I know the news will suffer today now because there’ll be no one to edit it…
I appreciate this call a lot. God bless you in Jesus name.’

Below are gruesome pictures of Adewunmi…

Politics / I Have Not Resigned – Okonjo-iweala by frankoko(m): 9:27am On Aug 20, 2011
I have not resigned – Okonjo-Iweala

By Emma Ujah, Abuja Bureau Chief
There was, yesterday, a hoax over the resignation of the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and the Minister Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who was sworn-in by President Goodluck Jonathan just on Wednesday.

Text messages conveying the rumoured resignation of the minister were passed round at about noon, yesterday precipitating several frantic calls to officials of the presidency as well as, those of the Ministry of Finance to confirm the story which also appeared on an online news site.

But the office of the minister dismissed the story, saying that it was the handiwork of evil and corrupt people who were afraid of Dr. Okonjo-Iweala’s position against corruption.

Her Special Adviser, on Information and Communication, Mr. Paul Nwabuikwu, said in a swift reaction that the information was completely false and a calculated attempt to distract the minister but that the objective would not be achieved.

His words, “it has been brought to our notice that an online website is alleging that Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, has resigned her position.

“The information is completely false and without foundation.

“We are aware that the baseless falsehood is part of the ongoing orchestrated campaign by entrenched interests and corrupt groups working against more transparent and improved governance in the country.

“The obvious intention is to distract Dr Okonjo-Iweala from contributing to the realisation of the vision of President Goodluck Jonathan and his administration for sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.

“This intention will not be achieved because Dr Okonjo-Iweala will not be distracted”.

Some interests, indeed, appeared to be bent on discouraging Dr. Okonjo-Iweala from serving in the Jonathan administration as they have been sponsoring publications that she would not return to Nigeria.

Even before the Senate clearing session, there were stories that the woman wouldn’t return on the ground that she had turned down the offer of Mr. President to serve in the cabinet.

By Thursday, there was a rumoured clash between her and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi over the nationalization of the three banks only a week before her arrival.

Besides, when she returned to the Washington, United States of America, after the clearing by the Senate, another story broke out to the effect that she had made up her mind not to serve because she demanded to be paid in dollar and requested to be given a free hand to pick members of her National Economic Management Team.

Ben Iroha, a former Nigerian team of Uche between 1990 and 1994, told SuperSport.com that he received the shock news via a telephone conversation from the United States that the 43-year-old has died.

“Seriously I still find it hard to believe when I got the call from the US yesterday (Thursday) evening. This is a really sad way to begin the year,” said Iroha.

Iroha added that he is yet to know what really transpired up to the death of his former teammate. “I am yet to know what happened. But I feel so sad to hear this because he was a very marvelous friend and brother,” said the former Heartland assistant coach.

However, there are still no details concerning surrounding the death of the former winner of the Africa Cup of Nations. The former Nigerian footballer was said to have taken his daughter to school early Thursday and was later found dead in his US home.

The police in the United States are said to have cordoned off the home of Okafor, as a coroner is carrying out an inquest into circumstance surrounding his death.

Okafor’s professional career began at defunct ACB of Lagos before he moved to KRC Mechelen.

The late Nigerian player has also played for Hannover 96 before ending his career at Sporting Kansas City, formerly known as Kansas City Wizards.

Late Okafor also featured in one of the four matches of Nigeria’s Super Eagles at the 1994 Fifa World Cup in the USA. He was also a football pundit on African football for ESPN until his death.

Sports / Fifa Bans Adamu & Temarii by frankoko(m): 11:46am On Nov 18, 2010
The Fifa executive committee members Amos Adamu and Reynald Temarii have been suspended from all football-related activity for three years and one year respectively in relation to allegations of corruption regarding World Cup votes.

The pair were implicated in a Sunday Times investigation which accused the duo of accepting money in return for their vote in the bidding for the World Cup, with reporters from the newspaper posing as representatives of the United States' 2022 World Cup bid.

Adamu has already indicated his intention to appeal against the verdict delivered today by the chairman of Fifa's ethics committee, Claudio Sulser.

Adamu was fined 10,000 Swiss francs (£6,341) and Temarii 5,000 Swiss francs (£3,170) as part of the sanction against them.

In a separate investigation, the ethics committee found insufficient evidence of collusion between the bid teams of Spain-Portugal 2018 and Qatar 2022. The Fifa ethics committee had also been conducting an investigation into allegations that the two bid teams had been colluding to trade votes, against bidding regulations.

However, it was announced today the committee "did not find sufficient grounds to reach a conclusion that there was any collusion".

Adamu has outlined his displeasure at the verdict of the organisation's ethics committee and confirmed he will appeal. He pre-empted today's announcement by releasing a statement indicating his intention to fight the findings.

"I am profoundly disappointed with the Ethics Committee's findings and had honestly believed I would be exonerated of any charges by now," he said. "I am innocent of all the charges levelled against me by the Ethics Committee and I completely refute the decision they have made.

"As yet I have not been advised of the grounds of the Ethics Committee's decision but regardless, I will be lodging a full appeal against it with immediate effect."

Crime / Nigeria''s Secret Police Intercept Weapons Shipment by frankoko(m): 9:52am On Oct 27, 2010
God help us oh shocked

Abuja, Oct 27 (PTI) Nigeria''s secret police have seized a weapons shipment allegedly containing grenades, explosives and mortars at the Lagos airport.
The shipment consisting of 13 containers were intercepted at the Apapa port in the country''s commercial capital of Lagos, State Security Service (SSS) spokeswoman, Marilyn Ogar said.
The containers were opened after which it was discovered that they carried dangerous weapons whereas paperwork suggested the ships were loaded with building materials, she said.
The capital, Abuja had witnessed bombings that claimed 14 lives during the oil-rich African country''s 50th independence anniversary on October 1, which has put security on high alert.
One of the three bomb blasts witnessed during the independence anniversary exploded near a place where President Goodluck Jonathan was inspecting a military parade along with some Heads of State and government delegations.
An Indian delegation, led by Union Corporate and Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid was also present at the venue along with the president.
MEND, a guerrilla group claiming to be fighting for greater resource control in the oil-rich Niger Delta region had issued a warning prior to the attack and claimed responsibility for the attack after.
The group''s first message had warned that there is "nothing worth celebrating after 50 years" as the people of the Niger Delta have had their land and resources stolen.
Several arrests have been made since then, including the former leader of MEND Henry Okah in South Africa and his younger brother Charles Okah, who lives close to the place where the SSS claimed they intercepted the explosives.
Nigeria got independence from Britain in 1960 and was later ruled by the military. The nation returned to presidential democracy in 1999 and has been striving hard to become Africa''s largest democracy since then.
