In a significant development, Hon. Dr. Patrick Umoh, the Honourable Member representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency, has been appointed Chairman of the House of Representatives' Committee on Health Institutions.

The appointment, announced today by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abass, PhD, GCON, is a remarkable recognition of Hon. Umoh's dedication and commitment to legislative affairs.

Hon. Umoh, who served as Chairman of the House of Representatives' Committee on Monitoring and Evaluation of Implementation of Legislative Agenda, will now be leading the House Committee on Health Institutions, where he will oversee key legislative initiatives and policies aimed at improving the nation’s healthcare system.

Yesterday, the Honourable Member representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency, Dr. Patrick Umoh, laid two petitions on the floor of the House of Representatives on behalf of Umeh Kalu, SAN, and retired ASP Etim Udoh Nsot.

The first petition, titled "Urgent Need to Avert Imminent Ecological Disaster on Residents of Trademore Estate, Lugbe, Abuja," by Umeh Kalu, SAN, called on the House of Representatives to direct the Ecological Project Office and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to expand the three-cell tunnel bridge in front of Trademore Estate to an eight-cell tunnel bridge. This expansion is necessary to allow for the free flow of water from Garki, Pyakasa, Aleita Dam, and other areas through Trademore Estate.

The second petition, titled "Petition against the Discontinuation of Pension Payment," by retired ASP Etim Udoh Nsot, requested the intervention of the House of Representatives to address the discontinuation of his pension payments by the Nigerian Police Pensions Limited, which have been halted for almost a year.

The Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary session, referred these petitions to the Committee on Public Petitions.

The Bill to Amend the Court of Appeal Act, Cap. C, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, and for Related Matters (HB. 999), sponsored by Hon. Patrick Umoh, successfully passed its Second Reading.

This bill, aimed at streamlining appellate procedures, received broad support and has now been referred to the Committee on Judiciary for further legislative action.

The bill seeks to amend the Court of Appeal Act, Cap. C36, to increase the number of justices of the court and provide for the appointment of a minimum of six justices in every judicial division of the court. This is intended to ensure speedy and efficient justice delivery and improve citizens' access to justice.

The occasion marked a grand homecoming and reception hosted by the people of Akwa Ibom North West Senatorial District to honour the exemplary leadership and contributions of the Distinguished Senator to the development of the Senatorial District.
 
The event, graced by the spirit of unity and gratitude, revealed the deep respect and admiration held for Senator Akpabio by his people. It was a powerful reaffirmation of the enduring bond between the people of Akwa Ibom State and their leader as all and sundry from all over Nigeria came together to celebrate Senator Akpabio for his contributions to the development of Nigeria.

At the end of a two- day Legislative Retreat of the House of Representatives, the Honourable Member representing Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency, Hon. Dr. Patrick Umoh, was captured on camera; comparing notes with Hon. Chinedu Ogah, OON and Hon. Bello El Rufai.

The Retreat held at the Continental Hotel, Abuja, focused on Economic Transformation and Development.

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the appointment of 30 new federal high court judges across Nigeria. According to a press statement by Soji Oye, Acting Director of Information of the Nigeria Judicial Council, President Buhari endorsed the recommendation o of the NJC in appointing the judges. The new judges will be sworn in at 10 am on December 2nd, 2015 by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed.
