The number 6 position in football is a co-central defender pairing with number 5. So that Xavi wear's 6 on his shirt says nothing about his position, it is like Gyan wearing number 3.
Besides in the Spanish team at this world cup, Xavi is the creative Midfielder just like Zidane was for France and Ronaldinho was Brazil.
The defensive Midfielders are Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquest.

the no was a mistake , 5 & 6 are d central defenders ,players with jersey number 30 , should be playing where then , i think Xavi is a typical number 4 & 8 and not no 10,
spain play a typical 4-3-3 to press there opponents from the deffence and frustrate them to play long ball for them to have possession , which can be change to different formations during the game ,both offensively and defensively.
xavi is not playin Zidane role ,hes doin his duty on the field due to situations , moreover Xavi plays fast,short and accurate passes to create space and wait for his teammates movements,
i didnt say it has to be Xavi ,but theres a big difference playing a player like xavi behind messi than mascherano ,
Xavi is the best in that role today, another great player is Iniesta he plays both midfield and the wings,while Xavi can only play in the midfield

How does Xavi make over 500 successful passes with the highest pass completion rate in the world cup yet Muller, Ozil, Sneijder, Kaka have had more goal assists than him?

It tells you one simple fact, his play is simply not direct and lack objective except his team is ahead.
