donigspain: Bro, the guy simply argues blindly even when facts are presented to him.
But you 'ved not presented any facts to me, is that how you argue? look you guy are all short sighted, thinking on an immediate solutions to your problems. You guy dont care about the number of people who stand to loose their jobs when prices are driven down in a competitive economy, A developed country spends close to 15billion$ just to ensure the walfare of 1million unemployed citizens, ever asked yourselves why countries like Norway, Finnland, Dennmark all doing well even with their high cost of living? all you do is blame these failed policies on your leaders at last not knowing you all came about these silly policies in the first, coz of your short sightedness.

donigspain: My dear, why would you think COMPETITION between firms will result to DEVALUATION of labour?
Here is my answer to your question, dont you know that if prices is driven down, firms are forced to do every thing that will enable them cut their production cost particularly in the manufacturing sector?
Business › Re: FG To Ban Foreign Goods That Have Local Substitutes by Freiburger(m): 3:15pm On Jul 18, 2012
donigspain: My dear, why would you think COMPETITION between firms will result to DEVALUATION of labour? I hope you know that labour value is relative to qualification, skill and knowledge. I also hope you know that COMPETITION leads to IMPROVED QUALITY and STANDARDIZATION.
Your argument is without economic base.

Business › Re: FG To Ban Foreign Goods That Have Local Substitutes by Freiburger(m): 2:32pm On Jul 18, 2012
donigspain: You raised a good point on the 'INFLATION' angle but you have to understand that we are practicing a 'free market' economy and as such, COMPETITION between local firms will naturally resolve the matter. We are made to primarily believe that capitalism is all about sadistic exploitation but this is rendered ineffective when competition exists; a situation which will shift the capitalists' beam light from average revenue (profit per unit product) to a more humane total revenue (profit per production) which will be determined by a firm's customer community.
No doubt compection will bring prices of goods down drastically, but does it really worth it? Let me give you some examples;
As competition drives down the prices of goods, a lot of firms will start searching for cheap labour just to stay competitive; this can lead to an unfair exploitation especially in a developing country like Nigeria.
Secoundly, most of the good produced by forein investors in Nigeria are locally consumed, that will scare them away.
Lastly, the market might be flooded with fake goods.

@ Topic, even the richiest and most powerful nation in world still imports goods that have local substitutes. I cant understand this government ideology.
Business › Re: FG To Ban Foreign Goods That Have Local Substitutes by Freiburger(m): 12:21pm On Jul 18, 2012
Seun: This is bad Economics. Most foreign goods and services have local substitutes:
- European Premier League (Nigerian Premier League)
- Calculators (Locally printed 4 figure tables)
- Guns used by the police and Army (locally made bows and arrows, cutlass)
- Wheat Flour (Garri & Cassava Flour)
- Peak/Dano Milk (Cowbell & Jago Powders)
- Aeroplanes (locally-made Canoes and Innoson Bus)
- Laptops by Apple, HP, Dell (expensive locally assembled laptops with inferior specs).
- Facebook (Nairaland)
- Google (Nairaland Search)

If you were actually to ban all foreign goods with local substitutes, you'd be banning just about everything Nigerians need and love. Nigerians will be miserable. It's madness. It's not even politically feasible. If the government pursues such a policy, the end result is that the government will end up banning goods that are produced locally by the friends of the people in government. Political donors, basically. This short-sighted policy is a recipe for institutionalizing crony capitalism.

Politics › Terrorists Launch Rocket At LG Secretariat In Jos •10-year-old Killed by Freiburger(op): 11:05am On Jul 18, 2012
ANOTHER major tragedy was averted in Jos, capital of Plateau State, on Tuesday, when some terrorists launched a rocket propelled grenade at the Jos South Local Government secretariat but narrowly missed their target. However, a 10-year-old boy was killed in the incident.

An eyewitness told the Nigerian Tribune that the incident occurred at about 10.30 a.m., when a man driving a Golf Volkswagen car carrying some other people suddenly made an abrupt stop on the Bukuru Expressway and fired a rocket propelled gun in the direction of the secretariat.
