The bolded is where you are getting it wrong. While Igbos might prefer to fly out from Enugu, how many foriegners have Enugu as their destination? Or do you seriously expect airlines to land half full in Enugu because Igbos want to fly from there?.
Even with all the oil companies and foriegners in PH, how many airlines fly direct to PH? That should give you an idea of the viability of the Enugu airport.
Foreigners are not the major travelers to Nigeria. Nigerians are. If A flight leaves Enugu filled, there is every likelihood that it will return to Enugu filled. Besides, they can stop over at Enugu, drop folks there, and go elsewhere to drop other folks and pick new folks, and return to Enugu for the outbound flight. This is a regular practice world over.

Mallam20: All Nigeria needs now is even development not politics. I live in Port-Harcourt and recently went to Abu Dhabi for a two weeks certification course. I havet to go to Lagos because there's no connecting flight from Port-Harcourt to Abu Dhabi and in my coming back it was only God that saved us in the local flight I boarded and[b] I also want to let us know without sentiment that most the guys in my international flight were ibos[/b].
That in color is a reasonable response. How can a nation grow when development is uneven?

On connecting flights and all that, it depends on the route. You can fly to PHC from outside with Lufthansa with a stop especially in Frankfurt and not having to stop in Lagos.

I am sure if certain airlines are dedicated to certain routes, then each of the international airlines will maximize profit in their niches, while letting the airport in question be internationalized to certain routes. All airlines don't have to fly to the same airport. In the USA some airlines have hubs in certain airports and not in others.

In Nigeria, most northerners will be heading for the middle East, so a hub for middle eastern routes will make sense to be somewhere in the North. The same can be said for a hub in Enugu for the Asian routes, where most Igbo traders travel to buy goods.
USA and European routes can be shared by all and sundry and these are places with significant Igbo population relative to Yoruba and the North.

I have seen that in bold in many flights and I can call myself a frequent flier.

That fact puts a dent on your claim of company executives traveling more than others. They have equal opportunity to do so as traders, and we know we have more traders than company executives in Nigeria. We also know that 90% of the import business in Nigeria is held by one group: Igbos. These importers do not swim to those countries to negotiate and import. They fly.

To establish an airline you need government license and the attendant high-wired bureaucracy. You have no clue what some Igbo business men are doing as of today in that regard. Remember that Igbos have had airlines in the past. Triax Airlines, Sosoliso, etc were all Igbo-owned. So its not like we are midgets in that area. For example Orji Kalu's slok Airline was running the West African route until Govt bureaucracy came in under Obasanjo (a Yoruba man, people who take joy in killing anything Igbo) and he had to relocate to Gambia where it become the national carrier. Besides, who says a Yorrober man cannot put his airline in Enugu. Are you guys averse to establishing outside your comfort zone?

Multiple entry visas are given to everyone these days who apply for them and travel frequently. So, both Igbo traders and company executives are not discounted from multiple visas that others get.

I agree that as of today the SE may not be marginalized. They have been until recently, though. Today the SW is marginalized but they saw it coming when they chose to go opposition. The SW and the North have held sway until recently. Power is transient and the SE and SS should make the most of it while it lasts.

That said the SE must continue to should marginalization until they get the presidency. They should learn to play the selfish game like the SW and the North.

How many such companies are there in Nigeria compared to import and export business where virtually every tom dick and harry Igbo man with some cash to throw arond are giants? Besides, a good chunk of those executive also reside in the East. Nnewi industrialists and folks like Innoson Motors. I am not even talking of Igbos in Lagos who also make up a good chunk of companies executives in Lagos

WY and SD are not North Eastern states though. But you can get a flight to Denver and prolly Salt Lake City from London and certainly from Franfurt, Munich, Bern, and other European cities. Besides, many of Northern USA states, except for WA, are small in population and so would not be natural hubs for international travels

Just like Miami and Atlanta, and one or two in TX are hubs of the south and LA and Settle are hubs of the west and the NY and DC ones are hubs of the East. It depends on the routes. They did not all become hubs at the same time and market forces must have been assisted by govt assistance in some form at some point.

When Abuja was built, the civil servants and banks didnt want to go there; the govt had to cajole, force or persuade them t do so. Now Abuja is a hub for something.

Yes, it will be tested when IGBOS decide to fly from Igboland. Then the airlines won't have a choice. If my options and and 2 don't work due to tribal irrendentism such as those presented on this thread, then option 3 would. You do not build an international airport for the fun of it. You build it because you want it used.

If Nigeria separates today, I guess you will expect Igbos to come fly from Lagos and Abuja.

Chicago is only one of the international airports that people fly from okay. There are uncountable others.

The viability or otherwise of Enugu as an international airport has not been tested. Give the test initiated by the minister a chance and let's see how viable or otherwise it gets.

Nigeria is a country of 160 million people (although 50% of that population are impoverished and disease-infested northerners who cant fly, or fly only once in their lifetime for Hajj, most using government sponsorship) and deserve more than 5 international airports. There is no political reason why each region of Nigeria should not have an international airport. If there is, someone should state it for me.

From an economic point of view, the Enugu airport will be viable because I doubt that all other things being equal, any Igbo traveling from Igboland will prefer to patronize Lagos/Abuja airport than using the one in his backyard.

What was the government doing again that we are even discussing about? So they choose to seek a new site, they chose one of your options above to establish a new international fly route. Do you still have any other complains?

When you build an international airport that is not the first of its kind in a country, there are three ways you can make airlines use it (1) persuade them to use it, employing some govt fiat (2) Share the routes among the airlines, so some can use the new airport (3) inform fliers from that area, for whom the airport was built to patronize the airport. The minister took options one and two and we are debating it now.

Those who talk about market forces, ask yourself how the Enugu airport will be used (Nigerian tax payers money was used to build it) by foreign airline aside these three options.

Perhaps the minister did not even consult well; the best option, for me, would be for her to educate Igbo travellers domiciled in Igboland on the need to use the airport in their domain: creates job for their people, lessens their travel times, safer for them than riding to Lagos/Abuja before boarding a flight, etc.

Market forces don't apply all the time, otherwise Obama will leave the auto industry to sort themselves out and not bail them out. You inject govt fiat/help/regulation/whareva you call, it into something the first time, and then market forces take over. The fact that Igbos travel out of the country more frequently will make Enugu international airport the one to beat sooner than later.

OAM4J: Agreed many Igbos are traders (even though many more people travel for various other reasons apart from trading) but majority of Igbo businesses are not even located in South East. Like you mentioned Alaba, of what use is the need of Enugu Airport to Igbo businessmen operating in Alaba, Kaduna, Kano and Abuja?

If Enugu route is viable, no minister need to direct the airlines before considering it. Am sure the airlines know the traffic volumes better. Besides the airport has just been re-opened, the minister should allow it gather momentum from local flights 1st, if the volume of local flights is high many of the international airlines will naturally give it considerations.
The highlighted stuff is a big fat lie. How many Igbos are outside Igboland compared to those inside? The biggest import markets in Nigeria remains Onitsha, Nnewi and Aba. Even at that, many of the Alaba boys have shops in the East too. You can ask this of them. I know a man who has shops in Aba, Lagos, and Onitsha and his boys in the Eastern shops, as with him in Lagos, travel on two-weekly basis to buy stuff.

Anyways, this argument is mute; just go to the airport lobby and sniff around about those who travel out more on daily/weekly basis. Not going to Hajj or Jerusalem on pilgrimage once in a year. OKAY!!!!!!

And, those other people who travel for other reasons you alluded to also include Igbos, no?
