Kobojunkie: Sorry but the above comment is what is is written by a mischief maker/ignoramus. There are 3 viable international airports and 6/7 political regions in Nigeria. What makes you think the location of the 3 viable airports have anything to do with regions? Since when did location of viable airports in the country become about political regions created to benefit politicians?PH is not in the SE. True or false? |
There is an international airport at PH (which is in the East) and more flights would operate from there if the demand was there. This is written like an ignoramus or a mischief maker. PH is in the South South |
Katsumoto: No, the onus is not on me to prove anything. And yes, the onus is on you to disprove the claim. If you insist something is wrong, you have to show how, and then make it right. The writer was not trying to convince you. He was stating his own facts which I also know to be true. |
Katsumoto: I suppose you are right; only Igbo traders travel internationally.Volume, my friend, volume. How many non-Igbo traders are there in Nigeria compared to the Igbo ones? Go to Alaba and other markets all over Nigeria that deal on international (read imported) goods (we are not talking of amala and ewedu) and see who is there. |
Katsumoto: No, the onus is not on me to prove anything. Those Igbo importers and exporters (traders) you guys love to deride, you think they swim to China, Korea, Belgium, Dubai, Brazil and other places to negotiate and buy their goods? When they provide data you guys will still argue that it was an Igbo who did the study . You are not satisfiable, and there is really no point even trying to satisfy you. Take the info or leave it; no one cares. |
Katsumoto: First, if some airlines have expressed a preference for operating from Enugu, then surely it would make sense for those airlines to be given routes from Enugu. The onus is on you to prove the claim wrong. From all indication, Igbos use the Nigerian International airports the most. You only need to take a seat at the lobby of those airports for one week and take a tally. The volume of international traders from Aba and Onitsha alone trounces travellers from certain sections of Nigeria put together. |
This is some badass torture method

The bolded portions of the article below are very relevant to this thread The Re-opening of Enugu Airport Thisday Editorial Monday, December 27, 2010 Hundreds of thousands of air passengers who use the Akanu Ibiam airport, Enugu, have every reason to be happy at the re-opening of the facility a few days ago. The airport, now upgraded to an international status, had been shut down for more than ten months so that refurbishing work could take place. While the airport was in disuse Enugu-bound passengers had to endure the routing of their flights through the much smaller Sam Mbakwe airport in Owerri. They would then drive another three hours to Enugu through a federal highway that is in shambles. For most part the journey by road to or from Owerri was like running a gauntlet between armed robbers and kidnappers. Many paid dearly while the closure of the Enugu airport lasted. However, as the saying goes, all is well that ends well. The reopening of the airport following the expansion of the runway is a welcome development. The Akanu Ibiam airport is one of the oldest in the country. Years of neglect had, however, left the facility in a less-than-befitting state. Not only were the run ways not long enough for international flights, even the departure and arrival lounges had become utterly seedy, lacking some of the basic facilities that standard airports are known for all over the world. News of the upgrading of the airport was understandably therefore well received by most people who use the facility regularly. As an international airport, the Akanu Ibiam facility is expected to be equipped with modern facilities to enable travelers flying out of the country to take off from Enugu without having to go to Lagos, Abuja or even the Port Harcourt international airport. That it took so long to upgrade the airport is one of those ironies of the Nigerian state. A survey of foreign trips made by Nigerians over the past decade, for instance, indicates that a good deal of it involves people from the Southeast who would have loved to take off straight from Enugu. Yet they had to fly first into some other city before they could catch an overseas flight. Such circumnavigation! Now that the airport has been upgraded to an international status it must live up to the billing in terms of the amount of facilities available there. Expanding the runways is not enough. Attention also needs to be paid to other operational facilities that conduce to safety. One that cannot wait is the completion of work on the facilities that would enable airplanes take off and land in the night. We hear that right now that cannot happen because the installation of the necessary facilities is yet to be completed. The airport's terminal building also needs expansion and more modern restrooms. The existing ones are hardly befitting of an international airport. The hope of the users of the Akanu Ibiam international airport is that the airport will match the best anywhere. For most of them, the upgrading of the airport is prayer answered. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) must not disappoint them. All that needs to be done to make the airport truly international should be provided. Already some of the foreign carriers are reported to have expressed their preference to originate and terminate their flights in Nigeria from Enugu because of the high volume of their passengers that come from that region. That will be good for not only the prospective passengers but also for FAAN. Let nothing therefore stand in the way of the airport. By and large, we expect the federal government to also upgrade more Nigerian airports to international status. https://www.nairaland.com/575467/some-foreign-carriers-plan-originate |

I guess African immigrants such as Nigerians in the US should be more interested in who provides them with good jobs than in a president whose skin looks like theirs. Obama, though my favorite just because he is a very lively fellow, appears incapable of rescuing the economy. In contrast, Romney has a better grasp of the economy, but the White House will be so dull and bland with him there. Give and take, I predict a tough battle in which Obama will win, but then another four more years of bitter NRC-NDC wrangling in the parliament when nothing gets done. |

Woman commits suicide, boy drowns in Ibadan Written by Seye Adeniyi Tuesday, August 28, 2012 A woman who committed suicide at Odo-Ona, Apata road, Ibadan, on Monday. Photo: Alolade Ganiyu advertisement click here IT was lamentation galore at Gada area of Odo-Ona Community, Apata-Ganga road, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, as residents of the area woke up early in the morning to witness another tragedy of double proportion involving a 10-year-old boy and a middle-aged widow. According to eye witnesses, the two sad incidents occurred at about 9:10 a.m when the young boy, whose parents live at Gada area of Odo-Ona community, went to Odo-Ona river to fish without the consent of the parents. Nigerian Tribune learnt that the boy, who was in the habit of going to the river to fish whenever his parents were not around, got drowned in the river when he was making frantic effort to pull out a perceived big fish which his hook had caught. According to a furniture maker, whose shop is close to Gada bridge, under which Odo-Ona river flows, "we were in the shop trying to start the day's job when we suddenly heard a loud noise of Egbami o (meaning save me) from the young boy. Before we could call the attention of other people to rescue the small boy, he suddenly disappeared inside the river and that was the end," he stated. However, many sympathisers volunteered to search for the boy's body inside the river and in the process of doing that, the search team met another tragedy inside the bush around the river, while trying to trace the corpse of the boy. Nigerian Tribune further learnt that the search team stumbled on the corpse of a middle- aged woman daggling on a tree, who they suspected must have committed suicide by hanging herself. Further investigation by the Nigerian Tribune on the sad development revealed that the widow hanged herself inside the bush near the river since last week Friday for a yet-to-be unravelled reason. Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, the son of the deceased, Mr Opeyemi, who works in a popular company at the Oluyole Industrial Estate, Ibadan, gave the name of their deceased mother as Mrs Juliana Olubunmi Oluwafemi and put her age between 50 and 55 years. According to Opeyemi, her late mother was a waste recycler at Ring road, Ibadan, and stayed at Bembo area of Apata-Ganga, Ibadan, having lost their father five years ago. The first son of the late widow further revealed that they had been looking for their mother who had a wedding ceremony for one of her children three months ago for the past four days after she left his house at Gada area of Odo-Ona after a visit. The family had also placed a missing person advertorial on both the television and radio to announce the unknown whereabouts of their mother popularly known as Iya Iyanu. The body of the deceased has since been deposited at a hospital mortuary at Ring Road, Ibadan, after some Sango (God of Thunder) worshippers were allowed to perform some rituals and spiritual exercises on her body on the tree. http://odili.net/news/source/2012/aug/28/619.html

Ogun: Evil men abduct 23-year-old, drown him in village river Tuesday, August 28, 2012 Evil men abduct 23-year-old, drown him in village river advertisement By WOLE BALOGUN When 23-year-old Rasheed Oyebola left his parent's house on July 17, little did his aged father, Mr. Mojeed Oyebola, know that it was the last time he would be seeing his young son alive. The old man was just recovering from the shock arising from the death of his wife and Rasheed's mother a couple of months earlier. He never anticipated that another tragedy was waiting in the wings. On that day, Rasheed had gone, as was his practice, to the computer institute on Ibaragu Road, Abule Lemode,a village in Ogun State, where he was receiving training in computer studies. He was expected to be computer-literate as part of the requirements for his recent admission into the Accountancy Department of the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State. His father said he had paid the sum of N85, 000 as part of the young man's tuition into the university's accounts, with the hope that by next month, his son would join the league of ambitious young undergraduates in the country. That lofty dream has become shattered, replaced with nightmares and an unending sorrow. Oyebola's hope of a bright future for his now late son has been dashed. The boy was discovered missing, and his body later found floating on the surface of a river in the area. The bereaved dad is suspicious of some men he claimed had been battling him over a piece of land. "At about 2am on that fateful morning, I got a strange call that informed me that my son, Rasheed, had been kidnapped by men I later suspected to be my rivals in a recent land tussle. He was said to have been drugged by his assailants, who tricked him to leave the place where he was receiving computer training. Then, after taking him far into the outskirts of a village, called Igbo-Iloro, Ogun State, the men drowned my boy in a river," the man informed this reporter. A young lady that was allegedly kidnapped with Oyebola's son called the old man to narrate the fate that befell the late Rasheed. She also told the old man that she narrowly escaped being killed by the assailants. The reporter obtained photographs of Oyebola's lifeless body floating atop the river. The horrific sight of Rasheed's dead body stared at you from the photograph. His left leg was tied with a very thick twain. Save for the short pants left on him by his assailants, the young man would have been stark naked. It also appeared that the deceased was actually dead before his body hit the water. He appeared to be in a deep sleep before he was dumped into the river, obviously to create an impression that he drowned by accident. To further confirm the old man's belief that his son was dead before being dumped in the river, Rasheed's body had not started bloating at the time the photograph was taken at the scene. Asked if he made any efforts to find out the culprits, Oyebola said when he reported the matter to the police at the Oja-Odan Police Post close to the area, he was told that some men were arrested by the police in connection with the killing following a tip-off from residents of the village. He regretted, however, that the police released them shortly after without even allowing him or any of his people to see the suspects. The distraught old man said further efforts to get residents of the area to give more information on the suspects was met with hostility, as the said residents became violent soon after. "I went there with a retired police officer friend and we took two cars to the village. You can imagine that they almost burnt the vehicles that we took there. We were told the police arrested some men as suspects but when we went to the nearest police station to report and find out who the men arrested were, we were told they had been released." Did he suspect anyone? Of course, the old man said. He actually mentioned the names of some members of an opposition party with whom he claimed to be having land issues. He said he had earlier been attacked by the same set of people, even as he claimed that they wanted him dead. "They did it because of the land tussle I have with them. They have even attacked me on several occasions. They went for my son because they couldn't get me. They have attempted to take my life on several occasions. One of such was the day I was sitting somewhere in front of the court where we went for a case. I just saw some men pointing towards my direction as if they were showing me to some people. "Suddenly some tough looking men swooped on me and began beating me. They took my phones and dragged me to a corner, attempting to bind my hands and legs. But luckily, I struggled to free myself from their hold and ran away. "I was hospitalized for more than a week. Before my wife's death, they were always calling her, telling her that she should forget about me. They told her that they were going to kill me. They also attacked my assistant and destroyed his car with their weapons." Revealing that the people he suspected are very close to him, Pa Oyebola said: "I am more pained because the people are those you would never be suspicious of as a result of our closeness. I want the government and human rights activists to help me fight these evil people. My son's killers must not go unpunished. The Inspector-General of Police should please help mandate the police in that area to conduct proper investigation on the killing of my son. "My life too is now in danger. I know those who could kill my son could come after me. My son was supposed to complete his computer studies next week and resume at the university next month." http://odili.net/news/source/2012/aug/28/502.html

re@lchange:As long as he delivers on the contracts he is awarded, I have no problem with that. His impact is felt nationwide, despite his short stay in office. |
But on a second note, the fact that Barth had been a minister gives him a headstart over other bidders, since he has inside info that others may not have that may work in his favor. Head or tail, there is either a conflict of interest or undue advantage for him. It is difficult to say what the man should do. Should he forgo both his ministerial appointment and the bid for his companies? money or national service? In Nigeria of today, most people will go for the money; after all, it is a legit contract. |
From what I can glean, Nnaji did hint the NCP of the potential clash of interest So by normal standard, he either resigns or recuses his companies from the bid. I guess he chose to resign and make money instead as a contractor This is the right thing to do. Whenever your personal interest encroaches on your ability to discharge official functions, you have no other rational option than to go, unless you are willing to discard that personal interest. Nnaji lived in a society where things work that way. Plus, the fact that he even had to leave is a credit to GEJ that he is not averse to preventing corruption. Nigeria seems to be working, slowly, painfully, but surely. |
http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/privatisation-bids-cancelled-over-firms-linked-to-nnaji/123388/ Minister of Power, Professor Bart Nnaji By Chineme Okafor Participation by two companies linked to the Minister of Power, Professor Bart Nnaji, in the power privatisation process has compelled the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) to cancel the technical bid evaluation process conducted for Afam Generation Company Limited and Enugu Distribution Company Limited. The NCP, after its meeting last Friday, had announced the results of the technical evaluation conducted for the 25 bids it received last month for the six generation companies (Gencos) created from the unbundling of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). From that process, seven bidders were said to have successfully met the cut-off mark of 750 and above during the technical evaluation process and were prequalified to have their financial bids open on September 25. They are: Phoenix Electricity, Transcorp Consortium and Ampiron Power Distribution Limited, which bid for Ughelli Power Company; CMEC Energy and GPN Nestoil Power Services Limited for Sapele Power Company; while Ampiron Power Distribution Limited, Mainstream Energy Solution Limited and North South Power Company Limited were prequalified for Geregu, Kainji and Shiroro Power Companies respectively. However, THISDAY learnt that the NCP was silent on the bidders that were prequalified for the Afam Power Station owing to the potential conflict of interest that had arisen during the privatisation process. An NCP source informed THISDAY that before the consideration of the report of the evaluation, Nnaji, who is a member of the NCP by virtue of his position as Minister of Power, had brought it to the attention of the council that O & M Solutions of Pakistan, a member of one of the consortia bidding for Afam, had worked as a contractor for Geometric Power. The consortium, in which O & M Solutions has a stake, is Skipper Nigeria Limited, which had submitted technical and financial bids for Afam on July 17, the deadline set by the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) for the submission of bids for the Gencos. Other companies that bid for Afam, a power plant in Rivers State with an installed capacity of 776mw, are Primeniza Energy Limited and NPG Consortium. The minister further notified the NCP that Geometric Power has a minority stake in Eastern Electric Nigeria Limited, which had submitted technical and financial bids for Enugu Distribution Company Limited on July 31. He also informed the council that owing to his position, he had notified President Goodluck Jonathan of his company’s bid for Enugu Distribution Company, and brought it to their attention that although he has an interest in Geometric Power, he had resigned from its board and transferred his shares to a blind trust. Nnaji had on several occasions maintained that since his appointment as the president’s Special Adviser on Power and later as Minister of Power, he had resigned his appointment in Geometric Power, transferred his shares to a blind trust and does not participate in the day-to-day operations of the company. Geometric Power, a pioneering independent power producer, was set up by Nnaji and built the 22mw Emergency Power Plant in Abuja. It is in the process of rounding off the construction of an integrated power plant in Aba, Abia State. Following this disclosure, Nnaji was said to have excused himself from the consideration of the report of the technical bids. Having been informed of Nnaji’s direct and indirect interest in two companies being privatised, the NCP source said that the council decided to cancel the technical evaluation that had been conducted for Afam and disbanded the evaluation team. It also decided to stop the evaluation of the Enugu Disco, which is still ongoing, and would likewise disband the evaluation team. The decision to cancel the evaluation for both companies, the source explained, was premised on the fact that all major stakeholders in the power privatisation process had been asked to send nominees to participate in the evaluation process. “The BPE had a nominee, the power minister sent a nominee, NERC (Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission) sent a nominee, NIAF (Nigeria Infrastructure Advisory Fund) sent a nominee, and BPE advisers sent nominees. “So the council had no way of guaranteeing that the minister’s nominee, during the evaluation of the technical bids, was not biased,” the NCP source said. He added that it was on this basis that the NCP decided to cancel the technical bid evaluation process for Afam and Enugu (which is still ongoing), and that other evaluation teams, without the minister’s nominees, would be reconstituted to re-evaluate the bids submitted for the PHCN successor companies. He said the evaluation process for Afam is not expected to exceed three days, adding that the report should reach the NCP either this week or early next week, while that of Enugu would be submitted alongside the report of other Discos. The source said NCP had taken the decision because it was imperative for the process to be transparent and fair, as any hiccup could mar the entire programme. However, it is uncertain if NCP’s decision to re-evaluate the bid submitted for the Enugu Disco would still comply with the rules of the privatisation programme. Providing clarification on the rules of the privatisation process, which the NCP had approved during his tenure as Director General of the BPE, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, said although the Public Enterprises (Privatisation and Commercialisation) Act, 1999, does not bar staff of the BPE and council members from participating in the process, the Code of Ethics does so. According to him, “The Code of Ethics, which the NCP approved during my tenure as a subsidiary legislation, as permitted under the Act, prohibits staff of the BPE and every member of the council, whether statutory or co-opted, from participating in the purchase of shares through the privatisation programme. “This was approved by NCP and I am certain the present DG can provide you with the Code of Ethics, if you want it.” |
