Some months ago, Nigerian doctors went on strike. What started as days of industrial action became weeks, then months. The masses were not happy. There were bitter complaints from every nook and cranny of the society about how insensitive, selfish, wicked and greedy Nigerian doctors are. It was as though medical practice in Nigeria was reserved for the 'meanies', seeing as everybody called the names with sweeping generalizations. Many said the doctors took an oath to protect lives and were not living up to it. Anyway, in the end, matters were apparently rectified and they resumed work.

Today- some months after the NMA strike was called off- JOHESU is on strike. JOHESU is an association of every other health worker in the hospital, minus doctors. The strike has lasted for sometime now. The doctors have been attending to patients alone. There has been deafening silence on this matter. There is no public outrage or outcry. Nobody is telling them they're not living up to their oath.

The interesting part is that the reasons for the strike of few months ago, are about the same reasons for the strike of today, yet, nobody is calling anybody greedy or insensitive or wicked.

There's undoubtedly a disconnect somewhere. I'm still trying to figure out what/where exactly it is.

They are not doctors and they did not swear to any oath.

Besides, they do not go on strike now and then like doctors and their demands may be reasonable.

This election as has been decided long ago and GEJ will win with landslide. Now, let's do some factual analysis. SS and SE HAVE SEALED THEIR DESTINY WITH JONATHAN. Even if you adopt Mohammed/Jesus or Jesus/Mohammed, SE and SS will still vote GEJ 100%. Now let's take a look at SW. Mimiko of Ondo just joined PDP, that state will go to PDP, Guy man of Ekiti Fayose will deliver Ekiti for PDP and most likely Akala or someone will win under PDP and Oyo will deliver for PDP. Only Osun will tip towards APC. North central...Kogi, Benue, Nasarawa, Niger, Taraba, Plateau and Kwara (all he needs is to have a meeting with Dr. Saraki; laugh, smile with him, give him oil block and assure him Kwara will forever belong to him as long as he is re-elected...he will not interfere any way and form in his state; he can run it like his private enterprise. Saraki will say really? GEJ is will say yes Wahali. Saraki will deliver Kwara for GEJ). Now, Adamawa; all the politics going on there lately you think it's a movie, this is a well engineered plan by PDP to gobble up that state. Kaduna will go for PDP, so will Gombe. Bauchi and Kebbi with PDP governors and GEJ supporters will go PDP, Jigawa will go PDP...Sule Lamido just need a little love and recently met with GEJ to commission his airport, will deliver Jigawa for PDP. Modu Sheriff is likely to join PdP and will split the vote in Borno with his followers...Northerners vote with followers; that's something unique about them. Same will happen in Kano as Supporters/followers of Shekarau will split Kano vote, at least by 40% for PDP. Ibrahim Shema of Katsina will deliver PDP. The only two Northern states that will be difficult for swing are Zamfara and Sokoto...these are core northern states that take "SAI BUHARI" TO THEIR HEARTS. Zamfara will support whoever APC/ACN pick....Must be a northerner and muslim. For Sokoto, the governor is immensely grassroot, self-made and stubborn. He is a PDP, though with the exit of Tukur whom he swore never to have anything to do with, he is more likely to work with Muazu and deliver PDP for GEJ; however with defection of Speaker Tambuwal today whom he controls like his personal cattle...he can recall him back to Sokoto within minutes, that said, looks like Wammako is not laughing or willing to cooperate with PDP with Tambuwal defection. Now to Atiku, A lot of people don't understand that Atiku is a planted Aspirant by GEJ in APC to cut down northern votes...trust me, Atiku is in cohorts with GEJ. He did this in the last election...his supporters ended up dividing northern vote or voting for GEJ in the last minute. As I said earlier, northerners vote in line with someone they follow irrespective of party or candidate.

Lastly, reading a lot of these posts here, I think a lot of SWers have this Utopian idea that SW still belongs to APC/ACN; it may in the minds of SWers, but in reality it now belongs to PDP...I'm speaking factually now...Ekiti is PDP, Ondo is PDP, Oyo will likely go PDP, Jonathan just dashed Aregbesola Osun to salivate the people tongues so that when he gobble up Ogun and Oyo, people will say it's also free and fair like Osun...politics 101. Come 2015, All SW states except Osun and maybe Lagos will remain APC/ACN; Lagos could swing to PDP If they present a good, solid candidate like late Funsho Williams that will yield supports of yorubas and non yorubas...Obanikoro has strong support and base. I know they are few people that command more respect than Obanikoro, even still with Obanikoro, he will deliver AT LEAST 30% of Lagos vote to PDP. So technically its all PDP as Lagos vote will most likely be divided close half if it remains under APC/ACN. Very unfortunate that a lot of SWers here don't know what's happening in their backyard. You people clamoring for Buhari/Fashola, let me tell you something you don't know, Nigerian elites...IBB, Gowon, Atiku, governors; present and past, most house members, senators, Banks CEOS, Dangote, Otedola, Adenuga, e.t.c.; WILL NEVER NEVER EVER EVER EVER want to see Buhari smell that presidency. Trust me...with Buhari in there, they are going to jail and they know it. I love Buhari and Fashola but Nigeria politics is played in Nigerian way concession...give and take!

Granted that T B joshua may have his failing, the truth is that the pastor willing went into the synagogue when he couldnt find miracle in Salvation Army Church. That is so glaring in his story. You are angry with all doctors because they are on strike...and because you know you cannot do without them.So,you lash out and ask them to return to their work.

The thing is,most of you people do not think about the conditions that your average health care worker works under. We lack a lot of facilities, we have bad light and water supply ,and we work long hours. And there are too few of us....right now there are 40,000 doctors for 160million people.(That is why most Nigerians never see a doc....there are too few of us.).

Now, the reason why there are few doctors is due to the fact that 1.)Because of poor funding for the university system....we do not have enough lecturers...and enough places to train lots of new student doctors.2).We have such bad and limited facilities that many of us have gone out of the country because we are tired of seeing patients die in our presence because we lacked X or could not make the diagnosis on time because of Y....or we don't have drug Z.

Solving those problems are part of the reason why the residents are on strike. Now...a little info....the NARD...that is the resident doctors union....have been on strike for longer than NMA. And a big part of the reason why they are on strike is for improved training facilities, and improved funding for residency....because a big part ofour residency is the clinical research they do....and both require money.

But you don't see that...all you see arrogant doctors. And you see the fact that you lost a friend in the hospital....and you think it was our negligence that did it.True...some of us are negligent....and some are arrogant. But most of the time...patients suffer in our hospita lbecause....thanks to lackoffunding....we do not have the means to help them.(And it makes me feel sad....when we have lost the stroke case because we did not have a CT scan to find out on time that she had a hemorrhagic stroke).

In my opinion,NMA and JOHESU ,as I have said several times on here....should join hands and fight for better funding for the health care sector...because what docs go through....nurses, pharmacists et al go through. Right now...we are in an egocentric fight over titles. But that does not mean we are also not fighting for better facilities....especially through the medium of NARD.

I hope you see the problem. Or maybe you don't want to...because solving it means either increasing funding for health care OR raising fees for services....so that government can pay for new facilities. It also means doing the same for university education. Regardless of what you think....we docs(including me, who has worked in rural care for most of my working life) want to serve you better. But we can't continue to do that under policies that generate acrimony between members of the health care team....as well as awful facilities.

But of course you do not have to agree with me.

Still....our health care system is in crisis.And it isn't the staff's fault.
