Health › Re: Ebola: First Consultant Hospital CMD Reveals Sawyer’s Encounter With Doctors by Funjosh(m): 2:20pm On Oct 10, 2014 |
Last Wednesday, former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, joined the growing number of eminent Nigerians going over to thank Dr. Benjamin Ohiaeri and his team of medical professionals at First Consultant Hospital for their clear sense of heroism, patriotism and professionalism. He also commended Governor Fashola for his efforts, noting that “he scored high marks” in all he did during the trying time and for visiting the hospital, thereafter.
After the traditional exchange of greetings, Obi told his host that “yesterday when I came into town, I attended a function where I made up mind that I was going to visit our friends at First Consultant Hospital and hear their story. So much has happened to you in the past months and you just have to tell your story to the world. If you don’t, you will be like a man who lit his candle and put it under the bed. You are the man who has borne enormous burden for the country.”
When Ohiaeri began to speak, his voice betrayed a man still in the grip of pain and anguish. His words too were as cold as ice, which could taw every heart.
“Thank you for coming here , Sir,” he began. “The events of the past months have been very overwhelming, to say the least. I have refrained from speaking all these while because I wanted to tell my story is a sequential manner,” he said.
Taking a deep breath, he continued: “We have lost a lot of things – our laundry, cleaning, laboratory, nursing, monitoring line; name it. But none of these compares to our human resource losses. When people come here and ask me how much equipment we have lost, I say to them that the most important equipment to me are the people.
“I recall that some of my colleagues with whom we took decision together are now late, l cannot understand it. I wonder why am still alive and not dead? I wonder why the dead are not like me.
“Here in Lagos, we lost seven people as a result of Mr. Sawyer’s bioterrorism and four of such deaths were staff of First Consultant Hospital. That means that we bore the brunt of the disaster for the country.
“Look at Dr. Adadevo, for instance. Here was a doctor who used to take care of me because I’m hypertensive. She used to give me my drugs weekly. But before this Ebola experience, she gave me a dosage that was to last me for one month. Then I said to her, ‘it is like I have graduated now to taking one month dose’ and we laughed over it. She had her son in this hospital and I was the one who took the delivery.
“Look at Dr. Abaniwo, who died before Dr. Adadevo. He was with us for four years. He contracted the virus when he went over to intervene when Mr. Sawyer was harassing Dr. Adadevo at a time he (Sawyer) had become angry and restive. That was how we got into this.
“Evelyn was a widow and a nurse with four children – very humble, loyal and diligent. She was with us when Dr. Adadevo was delivered of her baby. She was the first person who welcomed Mr. Sawyer. She was part of this institution. Her death was heartbreak. It was total devastation. Soon after her death, the landlord threw her children out of their home. And we are doing all we can to take care of them. We have got them and accommodation and they have settled in.
“For Dr. Adadevo, she worked with me for 21 years. She was a smart professional who I took as my number one person. Look at this lady here (pointing at Dr. Ada Igonoh who survived the epidemic), I have adopted her as my daughter. She started work here on July 1, 2014, 20 days before the arrival of Mr. Sawyer. It was Dr. Adadevo who brought her here. At the isolation centre, she was two beds away from Dr. Adadevo. Yet, she was the one monitoring everyone in the hospital and giving us reports on hourly basis. That helped us to know what packages to bring to them and every line of action to take. In fact, it was right in her arms that our own late Justina died.”
The coming of Sawyer to the hospital
Recalling the how the late Sawyer brought the virus to the hospital and the country, he said: “When the gentleman was brought in here, he said he had malaria. We ran a series of test, which confirmed that he was malaria positive. Every other thing was normal. Twenty-four hours later, he wasn’t any better. By Tuesday, he was already having hemorrhagic symptoms – blood in his urine and eyes. That was how the alarm bell started ringing.
“It was at that point that Dr. Adadevo started suspecting the man must be having either Ebola or Lassa fever disease, more so when he was from Liberia. Then, we decided to question, to know whether he had had contact with any Ebola patient, but he denied that.
“For us as a people, that |

LMAyedun: 1.The Sadist - Most students are scared of him. He comes to class, threatens everyone, you rarely see him smile, always serious with a straight face. He never gives an 'A' and when result comes out, his courses are always mass failure. He is usually the most hated lecturer.
2.The comedian - He is more or less a stand-up comedian. Always lively, students look forward to his laugher-filled lectures but once taken for granted, he can be shocking. He is usually stingy with marks/grades.
3.The Student lecturers - Also known as Assistant lecturers. They usually start as errand boys to some top lecturers in the department, they mark exam scripts, invigilate during tests & exams and later graduate to helping the lecturers with some of their lectures. They are usually hyperactive, aggressive and proud which usually results into a clash with the students.
4.The Crazy Lecturer - He rarely smiles, does things in an unusual manner including ways of speaking(with big grammar like Hon. Patrick Obahiagbon), a funny dress sense(with long bling-bling chains like Ayo Oritsejafor). He is always REAL and serious, doesn't care what his students feels or think about him, highly unpredictable and lectures for 3/4hrs until the students complains.
5.The Fatherly Lecturer - He is always matured, homely, approachable, and friendly. He takes his time to extensively teach his students in such a way that once you fail his course, you know that you truly deserve to fail. He is students' favourite.
6.The Lazy Lecturer - He comes to class twice in a semester(One, for course introduction & later, for revision, a week to Exams). He doesn't lecture nor teach, he only comes to read out loud while the students listen. He doesn't care if you understand or not, and 15 or 20mins, he is done for the day's lecture.
7.The 'Runs' lecturer - He comes to class, gives shabby lectures and drop his mobile digits or his errand boy's digits(The coded students knows what to do). #5k for 'C', #8k for 'B' and #10k for 'A' depending on the importance or Unit of the course.
8.The Departmental dog - Woman wrapper. He takes advantage of any vulnerable female student, it doesn't matter how young she is, the sex addict just want to get laid at the slightest opportunity. Hide your babe, sister, daughter from him.
9.The story teller - 90% of his lecture is the story about his days in the University and how serious/dedicated they were those days + how he still consult his 1973 lecture notebook. He talks about how bad the Gov't and the school management is, especially if he is an ardent ASUU member. He usually receive at least 10 phone calls within a lecture.
10a.The Religion fanatic (Daddy G.O) - This type of lecturer comes to class to chip in the Gospel within his lecture, inviting the entire class to his church & mid week programmes. He is always gentle & Godly.
10b.The Religion fanatic (Mallam) - He comes to class and usually separates the female students from the male students before his lecture begins. He looks gentle and you don't need to be told before you know he is a muslim. Take him for granted and you will pay dearly for it.

thegoodjoehunt3: Thomas Eric Duncan, the first person diagnosed with Ebola in the United States, received an experimental medicine nearly a week after being admitted into the hospital -- a far longer wait than experienced by four other Ebola patients treated in the United States.
Those patients -- two each at Atlanta's Emory University Hospital and the University of Nebraska Medical Center -- received their experimental medicines immediately. Those four are U.S. citizens; Duncan is a Liberian national. "We feel he didn't get the medicine and treatment for the disease because he's African and they don't consider him as important as the other three," Josephus Weeks, Duncan's nephew, said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.
The Rev. Jesse Jackson, who attended the press conference with Weeks and Duncan's mother as a newly appointed spokesman for the family, added, "We don't feel good about that. It's been a concern he had to wait so long." Tough to recruit workers to fight Ebola Dallas Ebola patient 'slightly improves' With Ebola vaccine, ethical questions Jackson said he thinks money also played a role in Duncan's treatment.
"I would tend to think that those who do not have insurance, those who do not have Medicaid do not have the same priorities as those who do," the civil rights leader said.
"It's a general rule in medicine that the earlier you start therapy in a sick person who needs the therapy, the better the response," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases, when asked about the impact of the wait for the drug.
Weeks said he and his family had to "pressure" the hospital to apply for permission to give the drug, brincidofovir, to Duncan. "They were treating him with oxygen, water and a bed to lay on," he said.
Weeks and Jackson said they believe the hospital applied for permission to use brincidofovir only after Jackson gave out the hospital's phone number on his radio show last week and urged listeners to call in and complain.
Ashoka Mukpo, a freelance NBC cameraman, was admitted to the University of Nebraska Medical Center Tuesday and began receiving brincidofovir the same day. Dr. Rick Sacra received another experimental drug called TKM-Ebola, which is easier to access but still requires permission from the FDA. Dr. Kent Brantley and Nancy Writebol -- both treated at Emory -- took Zmapp, which is no longer available because the company ran out of supplies of the drug.

Health › Re: Ponmo Consumption Is Dangerous To Health- Leather Scientist Says by Funjosh(m): 1:50am On Oct 08, 2014 |
Afriface: The Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather Science & Technology (NILEST), Zaria, Dr Isuwa Adamu, has said that consumption of animal hides and skin, popularly known as Ponmo is dangerous to human health. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, today in Abuja, Adamu said scientific research has shown that ponmo doesn't have any nutritional value to human health and that some of the animals where ponmo is gotten from are usually sick & harbor dangerous chemicals.
"In fact, it is not advisable for you to consume ponmo in the sense that some of the animals killed and used for ponmo actually have skin diseases. Some of these skin diseases are such that boiling them ordinarily, may not kill the bacteria. Some of the animals because of the ailments that they have gone through, are sometimes treated by way of injection with chemicals. People don’t allow these chemicals to complete its cycle and be removed from the body; they sometimes go ahead to kill these animals. So, if you consume the ponmo, the tendency is that you are consuming the chemicals directly because the skin part of the animal retains most of the harmful substances. Remember your skin is the major protective organ of your body and your skin harbors so many of the harmful things that are supposed to penetrate into your body,” he explained.
He advised the Federal government to put in place policies that would reduce the consumption of Ponmo in Nigeria.
