The Defence Headquarters has inaugurated a committee to midwife the process that will lead to the granting of amnesty to willing members of the Boko Haram sect. A Defence Headquarters’ statement, signed by Group Captain Wap Maigida, on behalf of the Acting Director, Defence Information, Col. Rabe Abubakar, stated that the planned reintegration would involve three categories of Boko Haram members. According to him, those to benefit from the government’s gesture are those who were forcibly conscripted into the sect; those who have surrendered and renounced membership of the deadly sect and those who are willing to do so. Maigida said that the membership of the committee were drawn from federal agencies involved in the ongoing campaign against the insurgency and representatives of Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi and Taraba states in the North-East and Jigawa State in the North-West. http://www.punchng.com/news/amnesty-for-bharam/ |

Lokoja—Kogi State government has announced its intent to commence the process of evacuating people living in flood prone areas in the next 48 hours. This came at a time victims of 2012 flood disaster in the cried cried out that they had been schemed out in the allocation of the post-flood estate built by the government for their relocation. Yomi Awoniyi, the Deputy Governor and Chairman, flood Management Committee, said the evacuation protocols would be activated by the state government, if the water level continued to rise. Awoniyi disclosed that the water from close monitoring, rises every hour, adding that the state was no longer as comfortable as it was believed. He appealed to those living in flood prone areas to move upland to avoid severe loss of lives and properties. The deputy governor said the water had so far risen to 9.66m, describing the present situation as disconcerting, especially as some communities in the riverine areas of the state had already been flooded. Awoniyi disclosed that from reports so far received, some riverine communities in Kogi, Bassa and Ibaji LGAs of the state had been flooded. He, however, described the present flooding of those areas as an annual occurrence, pointing out that the situation at present was not as bad as the scenario in 2012. While he noting that the state had been submerged by this time in 2012, Awoniyi maintained that the state government had placed all concerned agencies on alert for the purposes of evacuation and rescue. He appealed to the people to move upland to alternative places so as not to incur heavy losses and urged the people to remain vigilant in the face of the rising water level. According to him, government is working round the clock to ensure that lives and properties were secured. Meanwhile, victims of 2012 flood disaster in Lokoja, Kogi State, have cried out that they had been schemed out in the allocation of the post-flood housing estate built by the state government to relocate them The victims alleged that the 272 housing units were allocated to those not affected by the flood disaster but were given the houses based on their connection with officials of Land Ministry. Spokesperson of the group, Mr. Apasi Tunde, who led a protest to the office of the Deputy Governor, Mr. Yomi Awoniyi, yesterday in Lokoja, accused the state Ministry of Land, Housing and Urban Development of double standard. “In the month of May this year, the ministry directed us to pay the sum of N20,000 as allocation fees at a Diamond Bank account which we obliged. Having paid the sum, we were offered allocation forms, but the ministry refused to hand over the keys of the houses to us. “Subsequently, some politicians, policemen and Okada riders went to the estate, force the doors opened and occupied the houses illegally,’’ he said. Tunde wondered why the ministry found It difficult to eject the illegal occupants to enable the real victims take over the estate since the houses were built in their names to relocate them from river banks. He said: “We were given allocation papers since the month of May, 2015. The number of the flat allocated to me was 256. Our effort to access the property was to no avail as illegal occupants took over the estate threatening to kill us if we dare come closer to the area. “We went to the Ministry of land to see the Commissioner and for the past four months we have been going to his office but some people prevented us from seeing him. Now the illegal occupants were even bragging that it is only the state governor who can remove them from the estate.” Another victim, Mallam Ibrahim Momoh, who presented copies of bank teller and the allocation form to newsmen, said: “Right now, flood has taken over my compound at Adankolo Riverside where I lived with my family. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/flood-kogi-to-commence-evacuation-in-48-hours/ |
A royal father in Kogi State, the Oba of Apaa Bunu in Kabba/Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, HRH Oba Adebisi Obademi was today kidnapped by unknown armed men at Akiso Aba Ebira, near Agbadu Bunu. Eyewitnesses told Vanguard that the incident happened Wednesday morning. The kidnappers numbering about six waylaid the official vehicle of the royal father and ordered the driver to drive the vehicle towards Lokoja. It was learnt that the royal father was going to attend an official event in Kabba. A witness who craved anonymity narrated how it all happened to our reporters: “We just heard gunshots around Akiso and we saw the royal father dragged on the tarred road before they bundled him into his vehicle and also carried a sack owned by the royal father. We don’t know the content of the bag. “We couldn’t identify them because they were masked and probably trailed the royal father to that point. The sporadic gunshots scared everyone in Agbadu as we scampered to safety. So we couldn’t rescue the Oba”. When Vanguard visited the Divisional Police Headquarters in Kabba, the DPO was not on hand to speak to our reporters. But a police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not permitted to speak on the issue confirmed the incident and that the police is doing everything possible to secure the release of the traditional ruler. At Apaa Bunu, residents were seen discussing the issue in groups as the community is gripped by the kidnap of its royal father. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/10/royal-father-kidnapped-in-kogi/ |

CALABAR— FOLLOWING the crossfire over the killing of a suspected 19-year-old python in the residence of the Senior Pastor of Mega Faith Christian Assembly, Calabar, Rev Tony Amba, reported in a past edition of Niger Delta Voice, head of the Hausa snake killers that got rid of the threatening python, Danzaria Rabiu, has disclosed how they killed the snake. Rabiu, who spoke through an interpreter, during the week, told Niger Delta Voice that he and his colleagues were not snake charmers or hunters as described and did not use diabolical means to kill the snake. He said they hail from a family in Zaria with innate abilities to handle snakes without harm. Rabiu stated that though he spoke about remains of lizards and dogs found in the ceiling, it was unconnected to the pastor’s apartment as the reference was to another incident. He said that his statement that the snake would have lived in the ceiling for about 10 years followed his knowledge of snakes and certain characteristics he observed. “I dey praise Allah for the Pastor because e be like say the snake get mission for that place, but God dey with pastor well well, because me wey kill the snake believe say e get as e be. But I still thank Allah because na God know everything about the snake,” Rabiu said. Another member of the group, Ibrahim Yusuf told Niger Delta Voice that the killing of the snake did not involve the use of any charm. But he would not blame people, who believe that they used charm due to the poisonous nature of snakes. Pointing at his brother, Yusuf, who stood beside him, he said: “Even this my little brother as small as he is, if he crosses a snake or touches one, nothing will happen to him. It is just our culture and tradition; it is a gift from God not any charm at all. “All my family members and some families from my place are gifted with this ability. Although I left my place after I finished secondary school, but I am still gifted with the ability. “We do not use charms and we did not use any charm to kill the snake at the pastor’s house. It’s our way of life “My brother’s explanation was not well understood. From the time we suck our mother’s breast, they give us “dowri” and it is not a charm it is just our culture,” Yusuf added. Also speaking with Niger Delta Voice, a snake keeper, Mallam Idris Lawal stated: “Since I was born, I grew up to see my father keeping snakes without anything attached to it, you know we also have people like us in Cross River, especially in northern part of the state. but I will not blame anyone who believes that we use charm or diabolical means to keep them.” “If the snake is too violent, I just remove the teeth. I have been beaten many times but they cannot harm me because it is my culture and not charms at all. I do not know about other people, but most people from my axis like Yusuf and Rabiu do not use any black magic at all.” Rev Amba, who spoke to Niger Delta Voice on the incident, said: “Everything that happened that day was nothing less than a miracle. Only God knows how long it has lived there. “But for me, my family and the ministry which he has given to me to oversee, it is a September to remember.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/09/killers-of-python-in-calabar-pastors-abode-handling-snake-is-our-culture-no-charms-or-juju/
