Share it with Yahoo! Buzz UPDATE (10:15 p.m. ET on Thursday, Nov. 5): United is out with its side of the story. (Scroll down for the original post.) Airline spokesman Robin Urbanski told me in an e-mail Thursday evening that the airline does not have a policy that would prevent a customer from sitting in first class for dressing too casually. Instead, the gate agent apparently thought the customer in a track suit was an airline employee. If that would have been the case, an employee would have been subject to a dress code. "We are working with our sub-contractor that was helping us with this flight to investigate what happened and ensure something like this does not happen again," Urbanski said in the e-mail. "This was an unfortunate miscommunication with the gate agent who speaks English as a second language and was simultaneously assisting another customer when he believed Mr. Alvarez to be an airline employee in which a dress code policy is required." ORIGINAL POST (8:35 a.m. ET on Thursday, Nov.5): An executive with Best Buy claims a United Airlines gate agent refused to allow him to take a first-class seat because he was wearing a track suit, reports FOX 5 News of Washington. Armando Alvarez, a corporate executive with electronics retailer Best Buy, says he used miles to upgrade to first class on his Monday flight from Washington Dulles to Connecticut (presumably Hartford). Alvarez says that once his upgrade cleared, he walked to the counter near the gate to get his new seat assignment. That's when he says the gate agent told him that his track suit was too casual for him to sit in first class. (See a picture and video of the suit on FOX 5’s website). "I was humiliated," Alvarez is quoted as saying to FOX 5 reporter Will Thomas following the incident. "I was embarrassed and when some of the passengers were boarding behind me they said, 'Hey, what just happened?' And I said the agent just said I wasn't properly dressed to go in first class today. And they said, 'Was he kidding?' I said obviously not because I'm boarding and not getting in first class." OTHER PASSENGER NEWS: Southwest kicks mom, cranky kid off flight FOX 5 updates the story with a response from United. On its website, the TV station writes a United "spokesperson says they've identified the gate agent and he is a contract employee who works for Air Wisconsin. The spokesperson says the employee was interviewed and security footage from the terminal is being reviewed as officials for both airlines investigate the incident. United says there is no passenger dress code, but they cited two rules. Ticketed passengers can not be barefoot and must be clothed." Today's talker: Do you think passengers should be denied first-class seating if they're dressed too casually? Or, should anyone be allowed to sit up front as long as they've paid for the seat or cashed in miles for an upgrade? Share your thoughts. http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/item.aspx?type=blog&ak=620001025.blog |

1) Marlon King’s agent Tony Finnegan, agent of disgraced Wigan Athletic ‘star’ Marlon King, had this to say to 5Live about his client: "He'll be devastated, sitting in a cell with someone tonight. But he's a grown man; he's been there before and he'll take it on the chin." Take it on the chin, eh? I’m afraid you’ll have to come up with your own punch line for this one. We at Sport.co.uk are far too mild-mannered, of course… 2) Robbie Keane: Spurs are stronger than Arsenal Well, Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at the Emirates was a funny way of showing it… 3) Liverpool losing at Fulham… …meaning that, if you take the first letter of the name of each team to have beaten Liverpool in the league this season – namely Fulham, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Tottenham and Sunderland – you can spell the word ‘FACTS’. Ooh…you gotta love that. Unless you happen to be Rafael ‘Fact Hunt’ Benitez, that is. 4) The Castrol Rankings …which claims to be “the world's first rankings based on the actual performance of every football player across Europe's top five leagues”. If you’re intrigued about how it all works, then you can watch this handy video. The current top three of Henry, Messi and Ronaldo seems reasonable enough. But Claudio Pizarro at number ten? Methinks someone forgot to carry the 1 there… 5) Arsenal.com Headline from Arsenal.com on Thursday morning: “Fabianksi - I am so happy to be back again.” Headline from Arsenal.com on Thursday afternoon: “Keeper Fabianski ruled out for three weeks.” Look what you did. You broke him. 6) James McFadden’s penalty “Birmingham City attacker James McFadden admits he should've done better with his failed spotkick in their 0-0 draw with Manchester City.” “Done better”? Incremental improvements don’t enter it: you either score or you don’t. Just score next time, ok? 7) Everton’s defence April 2008 – An 84th minute Joseph Yobo goal puts Everton 2-1 up against Aston Villa. John Carew equalises two minutes later and the game ends 2-2. December 2008 – a Joleon Lescott goal in the third minute of stoppage time looks to have given Everton a deserved point against Aston Villa. Ashley Young scores in the fourth minute of stoppage time to give Martin O’Neill’s side all three points. February 2009 – Jack Rodwell gives Everton a fourth minute lead in the FA Cup 5th round clash at Goodison Park. James Milner equalises with a penalty just four minutes later, although Everton go on to win the game 3-1. April 2009 – Steven Pienaar puts Everton 3-1 ahead in the 53rd minute at Villa Park. James Milner pulls one back for Villa with a free-kick just two minutes later. The game finishes 3-3. October 2009 – Diniyar Bilyaletdinov gives Everton a 1-0 lead over Aston Villa in first-half stoppage time. John Carew levels the scores less than a minute into the second half. The game finishes 1-1. Everton defenders: learn your lesson, for crying out loud! The burning sheep of AberdeenA 24-year-old football fan dressed as a sheep suffered serious burns to his arms and legs when his suit caught fire on a train carrying Dons fans back from Edinburgh after their game against Hibs. Obviously, we hope the guy is ok, but it’s hard not to stifle a giggle at the following paragraph from the BBC’s report of the incident “Aberdeen fans said the man ran ablaze through the carriage as others threw beer on him to douse the flames.” It’s hard to know which is more of a story: ‘man dressed as sheep catches fire’, or ‘Scottish football fans nobly sacrifice beer’. 9) The Rooneys name their baby… …in much the same manner as one would expect them to get a tattoo. Yes, Kai means ‘victory’ in Mandarin. Very good. But in Maori, it means “food”. And in Yoruba, a Nigerian language, Kai means ‘stop it’. Thinking on, that was probably quite a good choice of name, actually. (NB – Kai is also Finnish for ‘probably’. And Japanese for ‘big water’. Just saying.) 10) The referee of last night’s game between Manchester United and CSKA Moscow As nice as it was to see United denied a blatant penalty and all that… |
1. Owen Hargreaves – Born in Canada to a Welsh mother and English father, the eternally-sidelined Manchester United midfielder further complicated matters by gaining German citizenship while breaking through at Bayern Munich. He was set to make his debut for Wales U-21s in 2000 before pulling out at the last minute, expressing his desire to one day represent England. Which, happily for him, eventually paid off. 2. Ryan Giggs – The Manchester United winger, whose perennial availability makes him perhaps the polar opposite of Hargreaves, represented England at schoolboy level using the name Ryan Wilson. In the end, he opted for the country of his berth, condemning millions of England fans to thoughts of “what if?”. Giggs’ paternal grandfather was from Sierra Leone but it’s safe to say that they never really stood a chance. 3. Zinedine Zidane – Imagine if Zizou had chosen to play for Algeria rather than France. Could he have led them to the World Cup finals? Perhaps even won it for them? Ok, that’s a ridiculous notion. But one thing it would have done is save Marco Materazzi’s ribs from some nasty bruising. 4. Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Although he was born in and went on to play for Sweden, the Barcelona new boy was born to a Croatian father and a Bosnian mother. Unlucky, Bosnia. But at least Croatia got… 5. Eduardo Alves da Silva - …Arsenal striker Eduardo, who was born in Rio de Janeiro but gained Croatian nationality while starting his career at Dinamo Zagreb, where he scored a stunning 83 goals in 111 appearances. Factor in the 16 in 27 he’s scored for his adopted country and Brazil can feel slightly aggrieved at letting him slip through the net. You’re not alone, Bosnia. 6. Philipe Senderos – Arsenal’s forgotten centre-back is a veritable melting pot of cultures. Although he has played his international football for his native Switzerland, he was also eligible to play for Serbia and Spain, while he can also claim to speak six languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese). No wonder he always looks so confused. 7. Danny Cadamarteri – Having become a household name (at least to those who could pronounce it) after scoring a wonder goal for Everton in the Merseyside derby, the issue of Cadamarteri’s international career became big news. Touted as Everton’s answer to Michael Owen, the dreadlocked speed merchant had to choose between England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Nigeria - and, figuring like we all did that his rise to stardom was a given, he plumped for England. He was capped three times at U21 level but, in the end, he never even got close to a full cap. Now at Dundee United after spells at…all sorts, frankly. 8. Giuseppe Rossi – The former Manchester United and current Villarreal striker was born in New Jersey, United States, but made the easy choice (in terms of international standing and length of commute, you see) of playing for Italy, the country of his descent which you could probably guess by his name. He has scored 3 times in 12 appearances for the Azzurri. 9. Ferenc Puskas – Yes, dear readers, we’re mentioning Ferenc Puskas in the same space as Danny Cadamarteri and Philippe Senderos. Because that takes balls. Just like Puskas used to take balls before despatching them into a net, which he did a staggering 84 times in 85 games for Hungary between 1945 and 1956. He then gained Spanish citizenship during eight years at Real Madrid, going on to play 4 times for Spain without scoring. 10. Alfredo di Stefano – Bolstering the strong, sepia-tinted ending to this Top Ten comes another indisputable legend of the game, but one whose dalliances with international teams cast him as a player in more than one sense of the word. Six goals in six games for his native Argentina between 1947 and 1949 were followed by four goalless appearances for Colombia, before he also gained Spanish citizenship at Real Madrid, going on to score 23 goals in 31 games for Spain. What a dandy. |
watched two very different games over the weekend. Firstly I watched Arsenal throw away a two goal lead at West Ham to draw 2-2. The second game I watched was Barcelona’s 6-1 hammering of Real Zaragoza in the Nou Camp. Similar styles In an article I wrote earlier this season I compared Arsenal’s style of play to the European champions. I also wrote in that article that the Gunners don’t quite have the same quality of player. On their day the Gunners attacking play is almost as good as the Spanish sides but they just lack a key component. Difference The big difference between the two sides is the ruthlessness that Barcelona possess. Arsenal have this tendency to shot themselves in the foot. Their soft underbelly or glass-chin as one commentator called it has cost them dearly in recent weeks and months. This softness has resulted in Arsene Wenger’s side not winning a trophy in four years. This season they have suffered defeats at Manchester United and Manchester City when they could have easily taken three points. Its this lack of ruthlessness that will mean the Premier League title will evade the Gunners for another season. A hard centre The so called ‘invincibles’ of Arsenal were always ruthless. A crucial part of that team was the hard-tacking and tenacious Patrick Vieira. At times he was too tough tackling but he added steel to a team full of skillful players. However he was also a box to box player and was handy at grabbing the odd goal. Barcelona have a hard centre in excellent midfielder Seydou Keita. The Malian international is a superb box to box player, in the same mould as the Frenchman in his prime. He got his reward for all his tracking back against Zaragoza as he scored helped himself to a hat-trick. Keita has even displaced another top defensive midfielder Yaya Toure in the starting line-up. With Keita in the team Pep Guardiola has been allowed to push Andres Iniesta into a more forward position were he can supply the likes of Leo Messi, Xavi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic with the ball. Solid centre needed Arsenal don’t have that tough defensive midfielder to allow Fabregas, Arshavin and Co. to push forward without worry of conceding. The aforementioned Yaya Toure would be an ideal signing, if the Gunners have the funds. Alexandre Song has played there in recent months but doesn’t look ready to fill that role permanently. Another player who has been earmarked for that role is French midfielder Abou Diaby. He has even been compared to former Gunners captain Vieira. However he has recently came out and said that he is very different from the Inter midfielder. He has admitted that he feels Vieira is a stronger more aggressive player than himself. I also think that Diaby is more of an attacking player. Over recent blip Barca had something of a blip before the weekend with a draw against Valencia at the Mestalla and suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Russian champions Rubin Kazan at the Nou Camp. However it was just that a blip. The Barca of last season showed up at the Nou Camp on Sunday night and they were unstoppable. They had Zaragoza tied in knots and the team is never happy to rest on their laurels. Even after they had scored six they were still pushing forward to score a seventh goal. Messi looked back to his fantastic best and Zlatan Ibrahimovic was also superb. I have to admit I thought Inter got the better deal receiving £40million and Samuel Eto’0 for the enigmatic Swede. My opinion of the Swede has been completely changed since his arrival at the Nou Camp. I always thought he was an expensively luxury but he is now showing why Guardiola parted with the superb Eto’o and so much money. Champions League challengers Ironically like I have said before I actually think Arsenal are more suited to the European stage than the Premier League. Even after drawing their last Champions League game at AZ Alkmaar I think Arsenal can be a force in this season’s competition, even without the previously mentioned tough tackling midfielder. European champions Barca will recover from the defeat to Rubin Kazan and win the trophy in my opinion. They are without doubt the best attacking team in Europe. If they hit top gear at any point in the competition then they will be difficult to stop. |

How Real Madrid can beat AC Milan at the San Siro AC Milan (3) v Real Madrid (2) Tuesday 03 November 2009, San Siro UEFA Champions League Kick-Off: 19:45 UK (20:45 CET) Real Madrid face the daunting task of taking a -1 goal difference – and 3 away goals conceded – to the San Siro tonight as they try to get their Champions League campaign back on track sans Cristiano Ronaldo. Having watched the first leg at the Bernabeu and how Real Madrid failed to hold on and beat a relatively old, but collectively-strong AC Milan, I thought I’d share with you my thoughts on the second leg game and how Los Blancos can win it. There are four (4) key areas where Real Madrid will need to improve – have a read and discuss (after the jump). Watch AC Milan v Real Madrid live in the Champions League by signing up to view the best football feeds online with the Live Sport Network. 1. Bench Raul, think objectively, be fair, and start with Higuain upfront It doesn’t matter if Raul is the captain or Perez’ girlfriend, If he isn’t performing well (which is the case now), he needs to be benched. The rubbish talk of Raul being the leader who instructs and helps others on the field is just plain useless. Start Gonzalo Higuain instead. Not because he scored two goals against Getafe, but because he has some characteristics (which Raul doesn’t have) that can exhaust Milan’s Nesta and his friends. Pace and powerful shooting are just two. Dribbling? Yes sir, he got that. The only unique thing about Raul though, is his experience and good-positioning, but for this game, Higuain is the right man. I know you might be asking, who should be playing with Higuain in attack? That depends on how Pellegrini wants to play, but I would add Van Nistelrooy If I wanted a great finisher and someone with experience. Benzema is a good option too, but he is under-performing. Still, I would prefer him over Raul. No, I don’t hate Raul, it is just that Benzema can do well against Milan, the captain can’t. Period. 2. A strong and EFFECTIVE midfield is the key Alonso, Lass and Kaka. Who else do you need? That looks like FIFA 10, but for Pellegrini, it is real. The problem though is apart from Lass, Kaka and Alonso haven’t been that great, at least they haven’t been Alonso and Kaka yet. Just their shadows. Kaka knows Milan well. OK, that’s rubbish. He needs to use what he knows on the pitch. It is undeniable that Kaka is a great player, but he needs to step up his game and this is a good chance to improve. He loves spaces, but I doubt he will get many if Milan play their game, which bring us to the next point. 3. Play your game and force Milan to adapt to it I think Barca is more than a night club, but I do like them because they do their own thing, play their game and FORCE you to adapt to it. They are just really good at that, and that’s why they usually win. Real needs to control the tempo of the game. Alonso has to do it. Lass will be there to help out, but it will mainly depend on Alonso. When Real plays with style, dominate and force Milan to react to it, it will be very easy for Los Blancos to win. They sort of managed to dominate in the first half of the first leg, but they lacked effectiveness in front of goal. But with Higuain or Van Nistelrooy upfront, scoring goals shouldn’t be a hurdle If you can assist them. 4. Communication and proper organization at the back is essential Here is the other difficult part (in addition to playing with style and dominating). Since we sold Cannavaro, we have been missing a leader in the back. Pepe isn’t one. And Ramos needs who leads him. I can only think of Casillas, but we need a defender who shouts as loud as he can, who can awake Marcelo and Ramos from their day dreams, and who can organize and lead his teammates. There is no quick and perfect solution at the moment, but Pellegrini needs to address this issue to his defenders. We’ve conceded off set-pieces, counter-attacks and even corners in a silly way. Sevilla scored two silly goals, Pato got away with a sneaky one and who knows If we don’t figure it out tomorrow night how Pato will get way with another one. We need to be organized and awake all the time. We also need to be strong. Ramos on the right, Pepe and Albiol in the center is fine, but I wouldn’t feel comfortable seeing Marcelo or Drenthe on the left. I would prefer to play Arbeloa out of his position and put him there. Pellegrini experimented with him against Getafe and the former Liverpool man did a good job. What do we have to lose anyway?
