Vandals Of Electricity Infrastructure Render 4 Communities In Ikot Abasi LGA Without Power Supply

"A WORD TO A FOOL IS NEVER ENOUGH"

At least four communities in Ikot Abasi LGA have been without power supply due to the activities of vandals of electricity transformers in the community. The affected communities are Obom, Ikot Ukpong, Ikot Umiang and Udo-mbon.

According to a resident in Ikpot Ukpong community, Mr. Alex Dixon, "the activities of vandals who specialize in tampering with transformer cables has grounded economic activities in the community for the past one year"

It should be recalled that the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Power, Dr. Victor Udo had stated that "a legislation may be needed to prohibit theft of energy because it undermines the efforts of the Government when electrification projects are implemented and afterwards people vandalize electric facilities that have been installed"

Meanwhile, in an attempt to restore power supply to the affected areas, the Hon. Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Elder U. T Nkanga-Ude, who is an indigene of one of the affected villages, set-up an Electricity Restoration Committee to work with the office of the SSA on power towards the restoration of power supply to the affected communities.

The Chairman of the committee Engr. Isa Isa who led the delegation to the Office of the SSA to the Governor on Power, said several calls have been made for government intervention all to no avail, he therefore pleaded with the SSA on power for speedy intervention to restore the economic life of the affected communities.

In response, the monitoring and intervention team in office of the SSA to the Governor on Power, led by the Deputy Director, Engr. Anietie Orok, visited the affected communities.

During the visit, it was discovered that the three transformers that ought to supply power to these communities had been vandalized. The transformer cables were cut-off from the grid electricity network thereby preventing power from being supplied to the community.

According to Engr. Orok, "the precision with which these cables were cut inspite of the thickness of the cables and the risk involved clearly shows that some experts might be involved in the condemnable act"

When staff of the office visited the nearest PHCN office in Ikot Abasi town, for clarification, the Service Manager, whose name was given as Mr. Frank was not on seat but a staff who gave his name as Ubong Thompson stated that the activities of vandals have continued to undermine the efforts of government to ensure uninterrupted power supply in the area.

The office of the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Power hereby calls for residents in communities with power infrastructures to be vigilant and safeguard power assets in their communities because when power infrastructures are vandalized the whole community bears the brunt.

Power Supply Falls By 22%, Minister Blames Vandals

Posted by: Deolu on December 14, 2013

Power supply across Nigeria has dropped by 22 per cent, the Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, has said.

nebo-360x225He said the drop was due to the activities perpetuated by vandals of power infrastructure.

Nebo, in a statement by the Federal Ministry of Power, stated that the Western electricity trunk line from Warri through Escravos was found to have been damaged at many points than it was initially imagined.

“Another one at the Eastern axis at Boko loma was punctured at many points and it would take the next one month to fix,” he said.

He said the vandals had injured the nation’s economy, adding that they should not be spared.

He called for the enactment of stiffer penalties as this would serve as deterrence to vandals.

The Chairman, House Committee on Power, Mr. Patrick Ikahriale, according to the statement, said members of his committee as well most Nigerians, were concerned about the low power generation recently experienced nationwide.

Nigeria: FG Decries Age-Long Neglect, Vandalism of Power Infrastructure
By Juliet Alohan, 27 June 2013

As the country continues to grapple with the enormous challenge of delivering stable electricity to Nigerians, the Minister of Power Prof Chinedu Nebo, said there are difficulties in fixing the problems due to lots of man-made causes and the age-long neglect of the sector.

The minister, who noted that the situation in the power sector is getting out of hand, called for the support of Nigerians in checking vandalism of the facilities being put in place by the government.

Last week, the vandalism of two major gas pipelines which supply gas to eight power generation stations across the country drastically cut power supply by 1,598 megawatts (MW). The affected pipelines take gas from the Okoloma gas plant and Escravos and supply to Egbin/AES thermal stations, Olorunsogo, Omotoso, Geregu NIPP as well as Afam IV and VI thermal power stations and Independent power station in Rivers State.

Speaking while receiving the report of the technical investigative panel on system collapses headed by Fatai Olapade, Nebo insisted that Nigerians must see and protect public infrastructure as their own. He said, "some of the causes of system collapses could be corrected by very simple work that could be done effortlessly. I will like to plead with the generality of our people to understand that we are facing very difficult times in the power sector. Some of these problems are man-made, some have accrued from years of under-funding and under-development of the sector."

He added that occasional vandalism of gas pipelines result in hardship due to power rationing and expressed the hope that with time Nigerians will mature to a level where we would start regarding infrastructures put in place by government for the empowerment of the people as a sacred trust that should not be abused.

Nebo who, however, declined that to reveal the content of the panel's report, gave an assurance that it would be open after government had studied it. While commending the panel for keeping to the timeline set by government to complete their investigation, he stated that it would be retained to implement their findings and assured that the report would not be left to rot on the shelf.

Earlier, the chairman of the panel, Fatai Olapade, who expressed the hope that government would implement the recommendation contained in the report, disclosed that since the panel was inaugurated two weeks ago, the nation has experienced three grid system collapses.

It really amazes me that any real citizen living in Nigeria will say the Governor of his or her state is working to the highest capacity Oyo is looking brighter and cleaner then Lagos. Lagos stinks and the Lagoon is contaminated, we are almost finished selling all our property in Lagos because soon that place will be underwater. We made 10 times the amount from investing 10 years ago, so trust me we are happy for the overly priced underwater Island but that place is due for a serious flooding that is why they moved the Government to Abuja.
