Deportation of beggars to their states of origin is a practical measure in handling the issue. You can't rehabilitate them all. The morality or otherwise of that measure is debatable (just like the DEATH SENTENCE), but the practicality isn't debatable.

If you start rehabilitating ALL the beggars in a place like Lagos, expect trailers full of beggars to start heading to Lagos from all states of the Federation..

In conclusion, I'm of the opinion that all elements who have nothing to contribute to a place, yet keep constituting a nuisance should be DEPORTED..

afam4eva: And non indigenes cannot be rehabilitated? Instead they are deported as if they're citizens of another country. Mind you Lagos gets the huge allocation it gets from the FG because of the non-indigenes in this state. if it were for only the non-indigenes, lagos would have probably been getting the lowest allocation in the federation.

Abuja authorities relocate beggars to their states of origin

Less than 24 hours after the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) announced a review on the operations of parks and gardens in the city and directing that they should henceforth close by 6pm, the administration yesterday repatriated over 170 beggars arrested from different parts of the city to their respective states of origin.

This, according to FCTA, is part of its effort to ensure security of lives and properties in the federal capital.

The repatriated beggars, who were evicted in groups in different buses, were taken to states such as Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Jigawa, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Plateau and Gombe. Other states are: Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River and Abia.

The repatriation exercise, which was carried out by the Society Against Prostitution and Child Labour in Nigeria (SAP-CLN) in collaboration with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and Social Development Secretariat of the FCT administration, was the biggest since the exercise started months ago.

While addressing journalists at the Bwari Rehabilitation Centre where the exercise took place, Grace Adogo, coordinator of SAP-CLN, explained that based on the security state of the FCT, the beggars have to go back to their states.

“Because of the current security challenges in the FCT, the permanent secretary, Nathaniel Abiodun Olorunfemi has directed us to rid the city of the street begging and hawking which contravenes Section 36 of the AEPB Act of 1997,” she said. “The beggars, who are widely unknown and who do not have any identity, often flood traffic jam in the city carrying bags with unknown items. They even peep into peoples’ cars while begging for alms”.

Stay away

She warned the beggars not to return to the city, adding that they (beggars) would be prosecuted if arrested for the second time.

Oludare Atere, assistant director at the Social Development Secretariat of the FCTA lamented the problem posed by beggars saying that it appears to be getting complex by the day.

He added that the FCT administration would not relent in its efforts at ensuring that beggars, hawkers and commercial sex workers are removed from the street of Abuja.

Mr Atere enjoined the beggars to seek meaningful sources of livelihood when they get to their respective states of origin.

On his part, Bala Tsoho the principal, Bwari Rehabilitation Centre, expressed dismay at the unwillingness of most of the beggars to embrace the FCTA initiative to rehabilitate them at the centre.

He said this is because the beggars lack a “sense of dignity and pride.”

Beggars, hawkers, prostitutes warned to quit Abuja to avoid arrest

Details Published on Monday, 17 September 2012 04:07 Written by Josephine Ella Hits: 222 .

Beggars, hawkers and commercial sex workers operating in the Federal Capital Territory(FCT) have been warned to vacate the streets of Abuja to avoid been apprehended.

The Minister of State for the FCT, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide, who handed the warning at the weekend said that the Social Development Secretariat of the FCT and other relevant security agencies and organization have been directed to commence massive arrest and evacuation of those constituting nuisance to the city.

She lamented that the activities of beggars, hawkers and sex workers has continued to present the city in bad a light even as it is constituting security threat to the well being of the people of the territory.

Akinjide added that the amount of complaints from various quarters on the activities of these groups of persons have reached alarming rate requiring immediate and responsive response to nip them in the bud.

Represented by the Secretary for Social Development Secretariat, Mrs. Blessing Onuh told newsmen during an inspection tour of the city that the influx of beggars, hawkers and all forms of miscreant into the city in recent months is very disturbing.

According to her, the FCT Minister, Bala Mohammed and herself have been working tirelessly to rid the city of the activities of criminals and have promised the residents of the city to keep Abuja clean and safe in line with the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

"While Abuja is an all inclusive capital for all Nigerians, it is not a safe haven for beggars, hawkers, and commercial sex workers. With the current security situation in the country the FCT Administration cannot fold its arm and watch beggars and hawkers take over the streets of the FCT, particularly, as we don't know who they are and where they are coming from".

Presidency, Buhari in fresh row over Boko Haram mediation

ABUJA — The cold war between the Presidency and the former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, deepened, yesterday, when the Villa took exception to the allegation by the former head of state that the Boko Haram sect was a creation of the PDP-led government and that they should not try to robe him into its problems.

Buhari had addressed the press in Abuja on Wednesday and absolved himself of any link with the sect and also declined an offer from the group to mediate in its reconciliatory talks with the Federal Government.

President Goodluck Jonathan and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd)

But the claim by the CPC leader infuriated the Presidency, which asked him to explain why the sect chose him and not another former head of state to lead its talks.

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said it was amazing that the sect named Buhari as one of its leading mediators with the government.

Okupe also questioned Buhari’s claim that Boko Haram was a PDP creation and that they should find a way to fix their own problem, pointing out that he was economical with the truth.

Okupe said: “What amazes me here is the fact that they mentioned Gen. Buhari to be one of the mediators. So things are beginning to fall into place.

“And the reaction from the CPC does not help matters at all after all an elder statesman, Dr. Ali Mongunu, was also mentioned and the man has neither rejected nor said anything wrong but the CPC quickly disowned Boko Haram in a very suspicious and questionable manner.

“From my own perspective, it would appear to me that with the statement that is coming from Gen. Buhari that Boko Haram is a creation of PDP and that they should go and fix it, that he is economical with the truth.

“How does that apply to Boko Haram inviting him to mediate in its talks? Is it the government that asked Boko Haram to invite him? And even if it is PDP that created Boko Haram, why should they be asking for Buhari to mediate?”

Attempt to link Buhari with Boko Haram, cheap blackmail—Spokesman

But a spokesman for Buhari, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, described the attempt by the Presidency to link Buhari with Boko Haram as a cheap blackmail that had already failed since Nigerians were aware that the party’s poor leadership created the sect that has killed thousands of persons in the country.

Fashakin said in an interview with Vanguard last night that it was naïve on the part of the PDP and its sponsors to try to robe the former Head of State into the Boko Haram saga just to paint him black and earn some cheap political miles.

“The CPC spokesman said: “Buhari has said something very fundamental that he cannot mediate on behalf of a group he does not know.

“But they are making noise now because the PDP has seen that its evil plot to robe Buhari into Boko Haram saga has failed and they now want to resort to blackmailing him.

“Certainly, PDP is not happy that the CPC quickly decoded all their gimmicks and went ahead to stall them. The truth of the matter is that PDP is too naïve not to accept that its wicked plot to robe Buhari into the Boko Haram saga has already failed woefully. They should know that CPC cannot fall into such a cheap blackmail.”

Vanguard learnt last night that Buhari’s rejection of the ‘offer’ by the sect for him to mediate in its planned reconciliatory talks with the government, was informed by his desire not to allow anything to stall him from wresting power from the PDP come 2015.
