Kia Rio 2005-2011 Vehicle was introduced into Nigeria by Dana motors Very sturdy ride. The automatic transmission still costs about ₦30,000, and is really hard to kill (even with abuse) The engine uses a timing belt which should be replaced every 70-100k km (not miles) Trust Nigerians once they change engine oil and filter they feel they have maintained car  First set of wahala starts after a snapped timing belt then every thing goes south from there. The timing belt is not properly set, the valves become noisy after replacement erratic idle sets in and car just becomes annoying . It also has a very very sensitive compressor . Once there is excessive heat at the condenser side (cooling fan failure), or a blocked system, the VDC compressor says good bye max 1week. So watch out for graphite head gaskets and a dysfunctional/abused air-conditioning system Engine is relatively cheap pegged at 180,000 for the original Korean setup and 140k for the Hyundai 1.6liter look alike . This one might seem controversial but the info shared is real. The Toyota Matrix XR AWD XR (2003–2008) 2003–2004 Toyota Matrix XR The Matrix's XR mid-grade trim level added features like color-matched mirrors and door handles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a panic button on the key fob. Options available with the XR trim included a sunroof, body kit, and 17-inch (430 mm) alloy wheels. This vehicle is very popular in Canada and in regions in the USA that have a lot of snow. This vehicle is an all wheel drive Major issue is rear suspension. The rear differential and wheel bearings usually die out early due to tyre abuse in Nigeria (using wrong sizes) the real wahala comes when it is time to replace thes parts. since these vehicles have been driven extensively on snow and salt replacing these parts in a lot of cases is impossible, in cases where it is finally done it takes a lot of cutting and welding ok of body parts to achieve this. Next problem , the rear differential is scarce in the market. In most cases the car is converted to a regular matrix by replacing the transmission, front subframe exhaust and c.v joints 1 Like 1 Share

Shalomc:I have done what a lot of technicians were scared to do. I am first a mechanic before a Cardealer , check the number of threads on my profile 314 topics and counting and over half of them are educational. There is no such thing as a cheap car, something must give. If cars were cheap in a particular region every one would be importing from that region . I have educated you lot for free now you will ask the right questions and see clarity before parting with hard earned money. When buying a car from Canada, do not be swayed by the outside looks, but the underbody looks . If the bonnet has started rusting bonnet that is on top a car you can only imagine what is brewing under the car. A lot of you have messaged me on whatsapp to mind my business, that the buyers already knew what they were getting into, well it is not in your place to tell me who to educate or not. I am at liberty to post on his thread but did not, I posted on an educational thread with a smaller view you were the ones that made the thread trend. Kindly do not quote me as I will ignore you hence forth 9 Likes

Kia Rio 2011(12)-2017 3 things to look out for. 1. The engine : very expensive full aluminium engine that easily gets bad when vehicle overheats engine price hovers around ₦500,000 2. Same problem with the VDC compressor sadly this one gets bad without any interference before vehicle hits 50,000km modifying the a/c system is a real pain as the engine is usually a 1.4liter engine or 1.2liter and will vibrate under load when a manual compressor is installed 3. Electronic steering column and steering rack, : our roads were not designed for electronic assisted steerings. 1 Share

The accord 2003-2007 V6 Superb engine, it has a very sensitive catalytic converter and will get blocked when the emission system in the car is not working optimally, our petrol also does not help matters. Major issue why the car is sold is a faulty transmission . 2 Likes

stepping on the brakes at speeds over 40miles per hour and you feel your brake pedal pulsating and your vehicle vibrating? It is usually the brake rotors aka brake disks, they have worn out unevenly and in some instances (this instance ) rusted. The brake rotors have air vents to enable rapid cooling but when rust sets in replacement is the sure option. In cases where the rotors are not trusted and the rotors are measured and found to be within specifications they can be resurfaced in a machine shop. 2 Likes

RAV4 2002-2006 This particular vehicle is plagued with a transmission failure caused by a defective engine/transmission ECU. The problems starts when the car shifts from 2nd gear back to first before switching to 3rd and 4th gear, it wears out the friction plates. Sadly most technicians do not know it is a very simple problem to solve , and the transmission is replaced, the engine ECU is swapped with the wrong part number and the vehicle runs and drives, but poorly, the temp guage stops working, load is not compensated when the a/c system is turned on and the idle system is always erratic . As usual the same issues with a full aluminium 1az engine apply and if there is any history of overheating and abuse same conditions follow as the Camry 2az. 3 Likes

Toyota Camry 2007 - 2009 XV40 Comes with the V6 2grfe and 4cylinder 2az option I will not go into its long history, you can read up on that here. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Camry What to expect when sourcing for a Nigerian used one. The 4cylinder 2az-fe specification 1. Air-conditioning issues. The vehicle is equipped with a vdc (variable displacement compressor ) it was the first of its kind in the Camry series to receive the new technology. In this part of the world most technicians are not up to date with modern techniques of fixing air-conditioning issues so let me explain how and why there are thousands of camrys with faulty/abused/converted air-conditioning systems. First the car is shipped in as a toks car usually with front impact , there is radiator and condenser damage. (Note the a/c was working in onyibo land before the accident), parts are replaced or welded as the case may be, the system is recharged without vacuuming and 3weeks or less later the compressor fails. The vdc in the Camry is extra sensitive to external contamination and moisture , the compressor will give up in the shortest possible time when proper proceedures are not followed . The next recommendations are a manual compressor which can tolerate abuse and some welding of pipes and modification of wiring. Now this works pretty well for a while, until the evaporator gives up , why? In most cases the thermostat functions are bypassed and the temp of the core gets so cold that it cracks and start to leak. It's a cycle of repairs until owner gets fed up and sells the car. 2. Engine. The 2az-fe engine in the Camry 2007-2009 built in the USA suffers a defect from the design of the piston, almost all of them burn engine oil . There is really no local solution unless you are ready to buy new pistons (updated part) and rings, this will cost you an arm and a leg factoring all costs and will be close to the price of buying the Asian spec of the same 2az engine that does not suffer the same fate. Most vehicle users are not used to doing routine checking their vehicles in the morning and usually end up knocking that engine. Quick solution by most mechanics is to polish the affected crankshaft, slip on new bearings and the owner puts up the car for sale (buy and drive)  Overheating : the 2az Fe engine is a full aluminium engine and does not fare well with overheating once it has suffered sever overheating it goes down hill from there until engine is replaced . Transmission: The 5-speed U250E transmission popularly called 13pin gearbox is a nightmare to even the most qualified transmission specialist , it has zero tolerance for abuse or contamination. The sequence of failure usually goes thus. Mechanic replaces shafts, forward gears start acting up, only reverse gear works well . Or mechanic replaces radiator , and gears start to act up , or mechanic changes transmission fluid and gears start to act up . You hardly hear of transmission failure due to high mileage of the vehicle , it is usually prompted by a repair procedures not done in sanitary conditions The V6 The usually wahala with the V6 is the transmission it is very expensive 450k and when it begins to fail the owner usually puts it up for sale. 5 Likes

While still loading content let me quickly add this. Most Nigerians are used to using 20w50 mineral engine oils across board, most are used to bypassing fans and removing thermostats and using water instead of coolant So abuse is usually a standard in most used vehicles bought in Nigeria. The effects of abuse are not noticeable immediately but after a couple of years. 2 Likes |
