Agriculture / Re: Starting Up My Vegetable Farm Garden From Scratch (ugwu, Tomato, Green-leaf) by gbemmytop(m): 5:57am On Jul 03, 2022
I pray may God return all a av lost in multiple folds of blessing ijn!
jidestroud:
My Story

Okay, hmmm... where I wan start sef? Let me start by quoting a saying of my loving mother (God bless her mightily for us her children) which goes thus; "farmers needs to be prayerful oooo omo mi (omo mi - My child in yoruba). O ni la ti kun fun adura (you need to pray fervently) because everything & all things can go south at any time in a sec". Those were are words anytime she enquired about how my business was going with regards to agriculture. Believe me now my people, farming is highly spiritual and you certainly must believe in God or whatever works for you to tackle the spiritual aspect of it.

Sometimes in second quarter of last year I engaged in a massive project which involved me soliciting for funds & even went as far as getting loans to carry the successful running of the project. It was a contract I secured to raise a large quantity of birds for just 3-4weeks max of age before offloading to the buyers. Everything was set and the project commenced successfully. It was so successful that in a batch of a thousand broilers, we recorded just 12 mortality at the 3 weeks of raising them. I was so satisfied that I boasted like the one who built the titanic that nothing could sink this ship.

Then Nigeria happened

In the 3rd week of raising the birds, the buyers suddenly compromised on our deal and told me they had to slash on the agreed price. I was furious and refused to renegotiate with them. C'mon this was concluded deal I fumed at them. For the first time in my life, I regretted not putting legal structure in place. The negotiations went on and on and before I knew it, the birds were in their 5th week. At this point in time, I was expending unbudgeted funds on the project running into thousands. I already made up my mind to hell with them, I had to the means to turn the whole disadvantage to my success.

the devil came
After much persuasion and urging me to sell at a ridiculous price to them, they came visiting this final day saying that they knew the funds to raise such number of birds was above me (Thanks to family ooo), and I should stop being stubborn and just part with at least some; then one of them just said; Mr. Jide, if you don't sell to us all your birds go die oooo. Immediately, I and my partner on ground rebuked him and that was it.

Lo and behold, in less than 2 days birds wey die ehn!!!! I repeat, birds wey die ehn... I was afraid. Everything proved abortive. Nothing worked. (My people, I visit vet I taya. Test upon test no worked). ALL was lost. It was a disaster. At this point, I had spent millions & I was using my hand to bury my millions.

Series of events followed. The worker on my farm taking care of my goats & pigs resigned without my knowledge. He simply wrote a note on a piece of paper and put it at the entrance of my gate. Unfortunately, I didn't go to the farm for 3 weeks (I was trying to salvage the situation of the other project). I only did realise something was wrong when I got a call from the supplier of spent grains that I haven't been coming patronize her again, saying I have gotten another customer abi? I was stunned. Another customer bawo? I called my worker, he wasn't answering....to cut long story short. I got to the farm and tears started rolling down my cheeks when I saw what was left. At a point, I was asking myself, so na only 1% of Job's ordeal be this ooo!!! How e take endure?

To tell the truth, I lost everything... (God bless my friends I swear). Iyawo was a pillar in it all. She just kept praying and thanking God while I was angry at Him.

I put up so many things for sale (God no go allow us dey sell our property because of trouble ooo), at least, I go sha pay people back their money and pay off my loan debt.

Moreover, I had to stay away from a lot of things including social media and the likes. Debts come full ground yakata grin grin. I had to channel my chi into staying alive and staying healthy, na who dey alive dey get hope ooo. Once again, God bless my family (I tried putting up an all is well face, realising it was never a crime to ask for help) who intervened in their own little ways.

So far
Well, so far so good. Haven't ventured into anything farming this year. I recently visited my farmland last week since last year and I literally had a good laugh. Maybe, I will be hunting grasscutters & snakes for a while before kickstarting again.

Nevertheless, I have been to learn alot from this experience which i will be starting later.

With regards to that particular man & his unterrance, I did confront him (Another epistle).

My absconded worker case dey Area K police station. Nevertheless, I have forgiven him and moved pass the situation. All can be recovered so long grace abounds and His breath remains in me.

Happy New Year to every hardworking farmer here! I quite find the discussion on which strain is more heat resistant at this time. From a few accounts shared here, it seems Ross 308 from Agrited had issues with heat. So my questions are: which strain will be most adaptable to heat, resistance to diseases, big comb & good height?
Reared Cockerels this last time & would like to try Broiler this time.
From the discussion, AA+ was found to adapt well/better to Nigeria hot weather and grow big nd heavy with good management.

You just said it , proper management and your result will be excellent
For company its not always good naming companies here cos sometimes it becomes publicity and sometimes some people misunderstand such.
I remember a time here I was asked same question after doing bird and feed analysis later that day some reps started calling to ask why I down graded their product I had to keep explaining things to them
So for company pls chat me 08135348909, remind me of username and question
Thank u

Wow, đts serious... Would surely chat u up boss!

Thanks.
Actually, Ross can take high heat too. I mean extreme high heat. The only tweak is to adjust the feed. I have been telling most people that Ross should not be fed on almost all the feed around. Yeah! Cobb and Mashal can take them. These local feeds are filled with high fat. Too bad. AA is the heat version of Ross from the same company. But if one tweaks the feed, Ross is great. Cobb is great but the company producing it in Nigeria frequently have issues with the day old chicks. They can produce excellent batch this month, and then messes up the next month. While Mashall is great cos it is only male line. Of course, during such heat and dry season, it is a brand I would go for, but during rainy season if one is not well grounded in broiler production, it will end in tears. In all, AA+ is the standard for anytime production in my opinion for our climate. But others have their strengths too. I felt there is a special breed for high heat period. Thanks bro! I like you. You are detailed.
I really enjoyed ur breakdown of the species... Pls I have some questions, Does AA+ have high resistance to diseases with proper management and which company would you recommend for someone brooding for the very first time himself.

Thanks. Yes, I've moved them from the coop they were in initially. I noticed a high presence of mosquitoes and that was my initial prognosis since it didn't seem infectious.
prepare the Neem leaf &aloe Vera gel combo then , boill the neem leaves and add the aloe Vera gel to it Wen the solution is cool. Give the birds for 3-5days. it's a strong organic antibiotic, don't forget to apply the lime juice on d black spots too.
Agriculture / Re: My Kuroiler Birds From Day Old by gbemmytop(m): 1:56pm On Aug 30, 2020
Do you av mosquitoes around ur pen?
Đts seem to be fowl pox... you can prepare neem nd aloe Vera extract, give them for 5days... clean the black or sore with lime juice consecutively till it start drying. if you want synthetic solution get pox care and follow the instructions on it.
Miyachi:
Good morning all.
I've been following this thread closely and I've gleaned a lot of information from your posts.

I started raising my Grinphield Kuroilers from day olds 4 weeks ago. I've kept to a strict herbal remedies using Aloe, Ginger and Bitter Leaf extracts. So no vaccinations or medications.

I noticed that about 2 of my birds have developed some sort of sore around the eye and beak area. I'm not sure what it is, I'll be grateful for any diagnosis.

It happens early noon till late in the evening.
Could be the heat if it happens noon to late evenings. Try nd cover the roof with palm leaves
or find a way to reduce to heat.
Another reason could be CRD, so watch out for weird sounds lyk d birds snoring etc, if đts d case treat with tylodox

Weldone op, can you Pls share how u prepared this Neem-aloe combo and how it's used.
I intend preparing a strong antibiotic for my birds, I believe this would be good. Thanks.
Farouq94:
I made some fresh Neem-Aloe extract yesterday for my chicks. I usually drink some from each batch, its very bitter but then its a medicinal powerhouse.

With this and other bio-security measures, most of your poultry diseases will be taken care of.

This is what it looks like

Note: Its preferred that you store your organic medicines in glass jars or clay pots: these do not absorb flavor neither do they leach chemicals. If you don’t have them available, use safe plastics. They usually have ‘HDPE free’ written underneath them.

SoftHeart:
Greetings all,
I noticed that my Noilers (about 15 weeks old now) doesn't like to eat formulated feeds, I have tried several brands (Top feed, Vital, Chikun, and one other feed that I couldn't remember the name at the moment).

They always ignore the feeds. Say I give them feed in the morning when I come back in the afternoon, it will still be there, almost untouched, so I will be forced to take it to the broilers in the cage.

When we bought them, we restricted their movement for two weeks and fed them formulated feeds, which they actually eat to a reasonable extent. Thereafter we released them to free range in the backyard and ever since they've been avoiding formulated feeds. They eat more of kitchen food waste, which I believe is not always enough for them, they eat leaves too (bitter leaves, water leaves and some other leaves).

I'm worried because I think they may not grow well, so I've been searching for an alternative, I gave them some millet and guinea corn, it seems they love it as much as they love eating kitchen food waste. So we bought some, but I noticed that both millet and guinea corn is more expensive than formulated feeds when I compared the price per kilogram.

Has anyone experienced this situation with their Noilers?
Is there anywhere I can get millet and guinea corn at a cheaper price?
The price here is about N200 per kilogram.

My 7weeks old noilers did same dis week, I was very disturbed cuz I haven't had such experience b4 nw despite my years of rearing birds. Had to change to chikun pellets, they r gradually taking to it, a few of them r still learning to pick the pellets thou.

I kept using starter because I found the protein content attractive, but I've bought finifher to use in my newest stock (Agrited birds)
I gave ultima to check the difference, ND it outclassed the hybrid feed totally both in acceptance by birds and weight gain for them

Price of feeds varied by location
Chikun=4000
Ultima = 4300
metrovet =??
Top feed =3800
Someone recommended Ultima too....
Thanks Boss.

It is welcoming to read all the insights shared on this thread on Native fowls.

Diseases in local/native are not quickly noticeable because they (native chickens) are highly resistant to most poultry diseases. The beauty about them is they find a way of getting/eating the right weeds/grasses to help them fight off the diseases. Please, watch out: whenever you notice your local chickens eating any grass or weed, just know it is good for them, and as such, such weeds/grasses are medicinal and should retained around them, at least in little quantity.

It must be said, however, that most common issues with them are lices and pox. One simple way to eliminate lices is to clear the last brooding place. This can be done by burning the wood-shavings or the absorbent used as soon as the hens are done hatching. If brooding was done on bare floor or sand or soil, apply generous quantity o kereosene at the site. One should also regularly (at least once monthly) spray their coop/pen with kerosene or anti-lice. You could also apply anti-lice on the top and bottom winged-feathers of each fowl. (Please, do not allow the anti-lice touch their skin)

Similarly, for the rest of the diseases, as mentioned by @GafarOlatunji, bitterleaf and scent-leaf extracts will do magic. As antibiotic, one could also extract juice from Aloe-vera and Tagiri and add to their drinking water. You could also simply dice the aloe-vera and Tagiri into their water. You can do that for 5 consecutive days every single month.

For pox; it highly contagious. Neem Leaves have antibacterial property and could remedy an outbreak of pox infection. Cut and allow neem leaves ferment in a bowl of water for about 4 days. Fermentation is done by covering the bowl (preferably paint bucket) with a cloth or perforated nylon. Add, a tablespoonful into their drinking water for 5 consecutive days. Another method is to get what is known to the Yorubas as GELU, and apply to spot where the pox is. The pox will dry up in a couple of days.
Good evening everyone, Pls for blood stain poo or brown watery poo organic treatment, in Wat proportion would the ginger, garlic and bitter leaf mixture be in a 4litre drinker? Pls I need urgent answers. Seeing blood stain and brown watery poo in my noilers pen.
thanks
