Car TalkRe: What Is A Turbo Charged Engine? by gbonsalifus(m): 10:58am On Dec 21, 2013
icemann: I disagree with you. If you agree that turbos increases torque then how does it not improve overall efficiency? If more torque can be gotten by turbos, you can have a smaller engine with high torque and a higher gear ratio. You save weight by using a smaller engine and you can use more gears in the box.
A turbocharged or supercharged engine is more economical than a non turbocharged one. Now, the problem is with the definition of fuel economy and fuel efficiency.
Auto enthusiasts use the two expressions interchangeably but in engineering, there is a little difference. While Economy puts the cost/price of achieving the output into consideration, efficiency only considers the unit ratio of input to output of a particular system like 'fuel' for example. Can't say it all here, I should write about this on my blog soon.
for those who can comprehend, consider a Nissan GTR vs Audi R8. Also, a Bugatti Veyron vs Koenniseg Agera in relation to this topic Efficiency vs economy'.

Car TalkRe: What Is A Turbo Charged Engine? by gbonsalifus(m): 10:32am On Dec 21, 2013
ping2ping: Please I see mostly in Volkswagen products having Turbo Charged Engine and I wonder, what exactly is a turbo charged engine?

I notice that turbo charged engines produces higher power that their non turbo engines. For example you will see 1.8L turbo engine producing about 140hp while a 2.0L engine will produce 120hp.

Can the turbo engine be easily fixed by most Nigerian mechanics?

Thanks for all your contributions
Very good answers have been given already. But to make the answers as simple and direct as the question for just anybody:
(a) A turbo charger is a very simple device like a small turbine that's mounted on the exhaust manifold/system of an engine. Its function is to force in more fresh air into the combustion chamber for better burn/pressure, hence, more power as u rightly stated.
(b) U dont need to bother about its reparability as a turbocharger is as simple as your car radiator and fan system. It can be managed by any fairly good mechanic.
Just to add, the charger is mounted on the exhaust system so that the high pressure exhaust gas from the engine can drive/spin the turbine. If it is driven by something else (like an electric motor, sometimes), it is called a super charger.

Car TalkRe: Driving A Car Without Catalytic Converter by gbonsalifus(m): 11:10am On Jul 01, 2013
Very tech, but I dont fully agree. The function of the second sensor is not to determine the fuel mixture. And the main sensor works independent of the Cat. read better here http://101carsense..com/2013/07/popular-but-wrong.html
Siena: Your car will run pretty rough. I would imagine your car was built after 1999, and so will have 2 lambda sensors. one before the catalyst, the other after (downstream). The downstream probe is designed to measure hydrocarbons AFTER the catalyst, which is now missing. Then it sends data back to your ECU, by which a fuel map is created. This will alter the duty cycle of your injectors (duration they remain open) thus regulating fuel use.

With your catalyst missing, your downstream lambda probe (Oxygen sensor) will feed your ECU wrong data, which will try to compensate your fuel trim. It will over fuel like mad. Too much fuel going into your cylinders, over a period of time, will cause engine damage, due to "bore wash". This is whereby excess fuel washes the vital oil lubrication from your cylinder bores, causing premature wear. Your engine will begin burning oil, resulting in high oil consumption, visible as blue smoke. Diluting petrol with oil will result in a very low octane, which couple with a hot operating environment, will cause detonation, which could lead to holes being blown into your piston crowns. Or worse, if severe enough, detonation occurring whilst your piston's on its compression stroke could bend a rod. This could cause a conrod and piston to smash through the side of your engine block.

So I'll ask you - is there any sensible reason to run your modern car without a catalyst? You honestly listen to your "mechanic" who thinks it's a good idea to delete it? Where did you hear removal of a catalyst decreases fuel consumption?

Car TalkRe: Why Do Nigerians Dislike Nissan Cars? by gbonsalifus(m): 6:37am On Jun 28, 2013
sultaan: Because it is a lot cheaper than toyota honda and they are very innovative when it comes to design.
Na na. the proper thing to say is 'Toyota and Honda cars are over priced in Nigeria'. Both brand new and used. Partly because of the demand and then the general street impression. Recent Nissan cars has slight differeces in both engine and electrical tech. Toyota and Honda are basically thesame thing with different names. eg, honda's IVTEC is exactly = toyotas VVTi, just different names. In the early histories of both companies, they were working togther. Nissan on the other hand had some major changes to their engine and other systems. But for a country like Nigeria were new tech is learnt by trial and error, the early owners of those nissan cars never enjoyed their cars as they were simply destroyed by their mechanics. The same mechanics sold the idea that nissan cars were no longer good cars. u can read more here 101carsense..com

Car TalkRe: Advice On First Car To Buy by gbonsalifus(m): 9:16am On Jan 27, 2013
gbonsalifus: First, you should change that mechanic cos his advise is just not good enough. This car shares its 3.5L engine with some V6 camrys except that the avalon has a more comfort tuned suspension and a luxurious interior plus a reenforced body/chasis. That you are going for the 2001 model means you wouldnt have issues with parts as such especially if you dont live in a rural area but make sure the one you are buying is in good shape b4 purchase. For fuel economy, u can hardly get better from another car of it capacity. it all comes down to your driving style. If you are ok with a v6 camry, then you will love this car.
for those who bother about v6 and other high capacity engines' fuel consumption, there is an illustration in this article (http://101carsense..com/2013/01/basic-car-management-tips.html) that shows that you can make your high capacity engine even more fuel efficient than the 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 etc cars.

Tnx

Car TalkRe: 2005 Nissan Altima Vs 2005 Toyota Camry by gbonsalifus(m): 6:25am On Jan 19, 2013
Excuse me, the guy said which one is better in terms of fuel efficiency and durability and u guys are giving him general talk?
For this particular model of Nissan altima, i will say pick the toyotal camry cos this altima (I have driven for a while) was produced around the time nissan was strougling to keep the company running, so they were more concerned about profitability. this is evident in the low quality plastic used for the interior and other things. If u were considering another generation of altima, then fine. but for this, durability and efficiency wise, it is not a match for the camry. U can follow my blog here 101carsense..com

let me help me help you cut down your list in this order
1. Toyota Matrix
2 Honda Civic
3. Toyota Yaris
I will suggest a hatchback for the reasons u gave, and the hatch of choice here is the Matrix. I wouldnt advice you go for the Yaris since you were even considering a golf 4. For the electrical problem talk, it is just our mechanics cover up for their inabilities as i explained in one of my blogs http://101carsense..com/2012/12/why-nigerians-are-afraid-to-buy-some.html
