Politics / Cross River State Retirees Threatens To Go To Court Over N35b Gratuities by geadom: 1:09pm On May 13, 2020
Retired civil servants in Cross River State have threatened legal action against the state government over the non-payment of their gratuities put at over N35 billion.
The seniors, including permanent secretaries and directors, said arrangements had been concluded to drag the state government and the accountant general to National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NIC) in Calabar for allegedly refusing to pay them their gratuities since 2014, worsening their health condition.

Some retirees have not been paid since 2014, leading to several peaceful protests in the streets of Calabar and the governor’s office, yet nothing tangible was done.

On grounds of anonymity, some of the retired civil servants said the court case was the last resort since all entreaties and protests had failed.“We are waiting for our legal adviser and solicitor to commence action,” they added.

Claiming that some of their colleagues died without getting their gratuity, and other who fell sick were unable to raise money for treatment, they said “some staff in the accountant-general’s office are demanding gratification of N200,000 (each) from us to facilitate the payment of our gratuities.”

But the state’s Accountant General, Joseph Adie, told newsmen yesterday in Calabar that the state had paid gratuity up to 2013, but low allocation to the state from the federation account caused the delay in paying the remaining.

Adie, a chartered accountant, said:

“The highest allocation that came to the state was N3 billion and, at times, the state would receive N1 billion.“I am sure you would be surprised that even states that have the highest allocation owe pensions.

“Some of them are not even making effort to pay; but we have tried. We are paying. In fact, at a point, we were setting aside N200 million every month for payment of gratuities.”

On why some persons who retired between 2016 and 2017 had got their gratuities paid, while those in 2014, 2015 and 2016 were yet to be paid, Adie said it was an express order from the governor that some persons with critical health issues in that batch be paid.

His words,

“Some people have health issues like spinal cord problem. In cases like this, I get special approval from the governor that such people be paid.

“They are only two on the line now, but if he approves and there are no funds, we still have to pray for money to come. But the truth is that such are considered as special cases.”

But he debunked the allegation of bribe against his office.

“I want to assure Cross Riverians that nobody has told me that there is a demand on pensioners to pay anything before they get paid. My office here is not aware of such demand.

“It is a grievous matter to ask retirees and pensioners to begin to pay money for their gratuities or whatever. It is an act of wickedness.”
Politics / Nnamdi Kanu Blames The Owners Of The Demolished Hotels In Rivers State by geadom: 1:01pm On May 13, 2020
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB has absolved Rivers State governor, Barr Nyesom Wike of blames in the demolition of two hotels in the state at the weekend.
Kanu in a press statement, signed by the publicity secretary of the group, Emma Powerful said the governor was only trying to protect his people.

Kanu rather blamed the owners of the hotel for flouting the lockdown order.

Kanu said,

“We must understand that operators of that very establishment risked the lives of thousands of people in Rivers State and beyond.

“Potentially, they could have brought infections and death to thousands of people, either through Coronavirus infected Almajiri or by inadvertently providing accommodation to Fulani killers streaming into our towns and villages from the North.

Kanu, however, lamented that such demolition which was generating comments from all quarters had been done by the present governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai while he was still the minister of federal capital territory, and nothing happened.

“When El-Rufai was busy terrorizing and pauperising thousands of Biafran businessmen by demolishing their hotels, bars, restaurants and homes in Abuja, some of the raging hypocritical voices of righteous indignation we are hearing today were never heard.

“They never uttered a word, nor made a sound because they were and still are afraid of the murderous tendencies of their Fulani masters who are still demolishing legitimate Igbo businesses in Abuja.”

Kanu’s, however, described Wike’s action as overreaching, saying,

“l do not condone it because he went too far.”
Health / Fg Talks On The Mysterious Deaths In Kano by geadom: 11:15am On May 05, 2020
The team leader of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID-19, Dr. Nasiru Gwarzo, has debunked media reports attributing the mysterious deaths in Kano State to COVID-19.
Gwarzo told BBC Hausa on Monday that he was only misquoted.

“More than 80 percent of what I said was on the collection of samples from people and how the disease affects individuals and not on the issue of the mysterious deaths,” he said.

Gwarzo further clarified that investigations were ongoing and nothing had been confirmed yet.

“We have so far done a lot but are still working; we have trained personnel and have sent them to cemeteries,” he added.

He, however, admitted that his committee had identified the causes of some of the deaths to be the COVID-19, as the dead had shown symptoms associated with the pandemic.

As at Monday night, Kano state has the second-highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases with 342 patients.
Health / How Nigeria Will Stop Coronavirus"-guru Maharaji by geadom: 12:49pm On Apr 27, 2020
Satguru Maharaji, the founder of the One Love Family Sect, has called on Nigerians to reconnect with their culture and tradition to curtail the spread of COVID-19.
He made the call on Sunday while addressing newsmen at his Maharaj Village on the Ibadan-Lagos expressway.

The sect leader said the best way to combat COVID-19 in Africa, particularly Nigeria, was through culture and tradition.

“In the past, all the various forms of diseases were combated through cultural and traditional cures. The black race must wake up.

“Naturally our culture and tradition are now backstage. All we need to do is to reconnect and recognize our traditional rulers.

“Any society that disconnects from its culture and tradition to make money is bound to face several challenges,” he said.

He disclosed that Nigerians are infected with foreign diseases because they had abandoned their tradition and subjected themselves to foreign control.

Maharaji said the Ife-Modakeke crisis was resolved through the use of 17 yam tubers, water, salt honey, and calabash as sacrifices to various deities in the land.
Politics / Gov. Wike Must Not Destroy Legacies Of Our Forefathers ~RIVLEAF by geadom: 11:26pm On Apr 18, 2020
Wike Must Not Destroy Legacies Of Our Forefathers ~RIVLEAF

The Rivers Leadership Advancement Foundation (RIVLEAF) has called on Governor Nyesom Wike to urgently watch his utterances and not destroy the vision of the founding fathers of the state.

They have also berated the governor for acts unbecoming of a public office holder, who should shape the hopes and aspirations of Rivers people.

RIVLEAF's admonition comes against the background of a broadcast by Wike today, where the Rivers governor threw caution to the wind and made statements undeserving of the office he occupies.

RIVLEAF tasks the governor to devise new ways of speaking on matters of state and national importance, while insisting that the utterances of the governor were doing incalculable damage to the people and image of the state.

RIVLEAF believes Governor Wike should show a reasonable sense of responsibility when addressing the state, as there are better ways of passing messages across without sounding boastful and vengeful.

Time and time again, Governor Wike speaks as if he has conquered the state, as if he is the owner, creator, and benefactor of the state; he speaks as though he inherited the state from his father.

Rivers people are not conquered and will never be conquered by a civilian dictator. Rivers people contributed sweat, grit and industry to bring the state to where it is and one man will not destroy it in eight years.

There are much more decent ways of making statements without sounding combative and desperate. Nobody is flexing muscles with him and he should know that. The situation in the country calls for measured responses and decency.

It is during occasions like this that you know those who are statesmen, those who will not play politics with delicate situations and who weigh their words rather than complicating things.

RIVLEAF charges the governor to stop threatening those living and doing business in the state but seek ways of mutual respect in bringing about greater development.

It looks as though Governor Wike is targeting the oil and gas industry with the latest arrest of workers of ExxonMobil. This is unnecessary and capable of having an international backlash on Nigeria.

The governor himself during his state broadcast exempted oil workers from the lockdown, one would have expected the governor to meet with the oil majors and fashion out mutual ways of ensuring compliance with the state's directives.

While the governor reserves the right to protect the state, he should do so in cooperation with various agencies of the federal government and corporate bodies, rather than threatening them all the time.

Religion / BISHOP Disobeys Govt Rules To Shut Down Church Amidst The Pandemic by geadom: 11:08pm On Apr 06, 2020
COVID-19 (ENUGU): Rev. Chukwuma disobeys govt, says “Church belongs to God not govt”

Most Rev. Emmanuel Chukwuma, the Archbishop of the Enugu Province and Bishop of Enugu Anglican Diocese, on Sunday dared the government by holding a normal church service and announced that the Province will not shut any of its branches over COVID-19 pandemic.

He said it was not right for the government to shut down churches and places of worship, adding that it was unfortunate and wrong to categorise church and worship centres with drinking palours, night clubs, markets and companies.

Chukwuma said that churches belong to Jesus Christ and He alone has the power to shut it, adding that closing churches would mean giving the devil opportunity to ravage the people and the country.

The cleric wondered why people should be stopped from “running to their God in worship in a time like now the whole world was in confusion, where would they run to for safety, help and deliverance?”

Reacting to the disruption of worship of some Anglican churches in Enugu, the Archbishop warned security operatives against stopping members of the Anglican Church from worshipping in their church buildings.

“I have told them not to try it again unless they want more trouble for themselves and their families. There is no way you can ask the church of God to stop when we need prayers to bring healing upon the land, especially when we are faced with a problem as serious as coronavirus that has defied every human solution.

“It is wrong on the government to send police after worshippers. I think if they are serious, what they should do is to ensure that the hygiene protocol is kept, that the social distancing order is also kept, while encouraging those at the altar to pray the country out (of the pandemic).

“What can man do under this circumstance without God? What can even the President or our scientists do in this trying time without God? It is wrong for people to think that we will not find answers to what has befallen us through prayers. So, I want to warn that whoever is behind the disruption should stop in his own interest.

“The last thing I will do at this time is to close the doors of my church building. In my Cathedral, we worshipped today and we will observe all the Palm Sunday and Easter activities.

“I will worship on Monday, Thursday as well as the Easter Sunday. It will be sad on anybody who tried to stop us because. We’re doing what we are supposed to do.”
Investment / What You Should Know About 5G Network, COVID-19 And Security As Directed By NCC by geadom: 12:07pm On Apr 06, 2020
-Nigerian Communications Commission ,NCC Clears doubts over 5G, COVID-19 and Security

In view of the recent development in which misleading materials with no proven evidence being circulated to link CORONAVIRUS or COVID-19 with 5G Technology, it has become imperative for the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to provide the following clarifications;

Firstly, there is no correlation between 5G Technology and COVID-19. 5G is an advancement on today's 4G technology designed to transform the world positively.

Secondly, there is no deployment of 5G in Nigeria at the moment. The NCC back in November 2019 approved trial test for 5G for a period of three (3) months and that the trial has been concluded and installation decommissioned.

The trial among others was to study and observe any health or security challenges the 5G network might present. Relevant stakeholders including members of the security agencies were invited to participate during the trial.

The NCC will continue to maintain its policy of technology neutrality and will continue to encourage Service providers to deploy the best technology that will meet the needs of the society in a secured and friendly manner.

The following are some Frequently Asked Questions :

1. What is 5G ?

Ans: 5G is a fifth generation of mobile technology which is an improvement of today's 4G technology with enhanced capabilities. 5G technology provides the platform for new and emerging technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data to improve the way we live and work.

2. Do we have 5G network in Nigeria now?

Ans: No there is no 5G network in Nigeria at the moment. What we had was a trial test for 3 months which has since been concluded.

3. When are we expecting 5G in Nigeria?

Ans. No exact time frame but when conditions are right and all doubts are cleared.

4. Do we have spectrum for 5G in Nigeria?

Ans. Yes, particularly the millimetre wave spectrum from 24GHz and above are available.

5. Have we given out 5G spectrum to operators?

Ans. No. It will be auctioned at the appropriate time.

6. Are there 5G deployment around the world?

Ans. Yes, in countries like South Korea, China, USA, Germany and others since middle 2019.

7. Is the Radiation from 5G different from those of 2G, 3G and 4G?

Ans. No, they all belong to the same class of Non-ionizing Radiation.

8. Who is going to Allocate spectrum for 5G in Nigeria?

Ans. The National Frequency Management Council (NFMC) Chaired by the Hon Minister of Communications and Digital Economy has the responsibility for allocating bulk spectrum for various services.

9. Should I be concerned about 5G technology?

Ans. No, nothing to worry about. Safety and human health are top priority in the design and deployment of 5G.

10. What are the benefits of 5G ?

Ans. 5G technology will transform the world by connecting everything with everybody. It will create millions of jobs, it will add billions of dollars to the economy (GDP) and can solve some of our problems such as insecurity and improve governance and efficiency in the society.

11. Is 5G causing CORONAVIRUS or COVID-19?

Ans. No, there is no link what so ever between 5G and CORONAVIRUS or COVID-19.

12. Should I ignore all the negative narratives I am hearing about 5G ?

Ans. No, but rely on information from world Standards making bodies such as WHO, ITU, IEEE and industry experts for advice when in doubt.

13. Is there Standard limit set for Radiation from mobile devices?

Ans. Yes, there is Radiation emission limits set by the International Commission for Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) below which the radiation is considered safe for humans.

14. Are the mobile network operators in Nigeria conforming to the Radiation emissions limits ?

Ans. Yes, the NCC has been regularly conducting measurements of Radiation emissions from Base stations across the country and they are all well below the set limits.

15. Is 5G same as Fibre cable?

Ans. No, fibre cable is a terrestrial technology for broadband that existed for decades while 5G is a new mobile technology for enhanced quality of service as explained in Q1 above.

16. Are there other sources of Radiation apart from mobile Base stations ?

Ans. Yes, there are other sources of Radiation which include television stations, radio broadcasts stations, wifi and so on. They all belong to the class of Radiation considered to be safe for humans when operated below the set limits.

17. Who owns 5G ?

Ans. 5G is not owned by anybody but collection of technologies, Standards and processes agreed at the international level by Standards making bodies.

18. Has NCC issued licenses for 5G in Nigeria ?

Ans. No, NCC has not issued any licence for 5G in Nigeria. NCC is technology neutral as such we don't license technology but assigns spectrum to operators for deployment of any service when allocated by NFMC.

19. Why are some operators rolling out fibre during the lockdown period?

Ans. As a result of the lockdown, the amount of voice and data usage has increased by huge amounts and there is need to expand the network to provide optimum quality of service to users sitting at home. Telecom is also critical for information decimination during the lockdown.

There are trends going on on the internet nowadays whereby people engage in different kinds of challenge and this looked like a challenge when I first saw it.. But I realized it was not a challenge but instead it was the guy flaunting his girlfriend or whatsoever people are saying she is.

The guy posted the picture on the facebook page saying that members of the group should feel free to lick their screen.... But he was met with ill luck as most of the comments generated from the post were all abusive and insulting words towards either the boy that posted or the girl he posted.

Education / Why Some Students Read But Don't Understand Or Even Remember During Exams by geadom: 12:49pm On Jun 24, 2019
Human memory can be divided into 3.
1. The Sensory Memory
2. The Short Term Memory
3. The Long Term Memory.

1. The Sensory Memory
The sensory memory is responsible for storing information for a short period of time, let say few seconds and it is not used during studying at all.

Let say I ask you to take a glance at the below numbers.
9, 5, 1, 3, 7

I now told you to close your eyes and think of other things without checking the numbers again, I now told you to write the number down somewhere in the right order.

Probably, you might not get it, but you will know the number involved, you will get the numbers but not the order, that's the power of sensory memory, just for few seconds.

2. Short Term Memory
The short term memory is formed from constant revision of what we stored in Sensory Memory, let use the number I wrote above as an example. If instead of taking a glance at the numbers, you read them to yourself again and again, probably, you will recollect the order.

Short Term Memory is used by students to prepare for exam, you will see that many students forget whatever they read after exam.

3. Long Term Memory
Long term memory is the real deal, constant revision of what is stored in short term memory transfered the thing into our long term memory.

And it will be hard to forget that.

Politics / Names Of Ministers: Buhari To Submit List To Senate Before July 2 by geadom: 5:28pm On Jun 16, 2019
Top-ranking lawmakers in Nigeria’s National Assembly said they were expecting President Muhammadu Buhari to submit a list of ministers that will form his federal executive council before or by July 2.
The Ahmad Lawan-led 9th Senate would upon resumption from its two weeks recess in July begin a speedy screening and confirmation of persons whose names are expected to have been submitted by the Presidency before the July 2 resumption of the upper legislative chamber.
A ranking senator told The Guardian, however, that at the moment, nothing is on the ground regarding the list of persons to be confirmed as ministers but was optimistic that within the two weeks of the Senate recess, the President would have submitted the list.
Another lawmaker who just got elevated from the House of Representatives to the Senate in the February 23, 2019 election said that although the President is still within a reasonable time if he submits the list before July, expectations are that President Muhammadu Buhari would make up for the time lost during his first term when he delayed the ministerial list for six months.
The lawmaker further noted that it is particularly very strategic and helpful for the President to meet the July timeline because the Senate might proceed on its annual end of session holiday at the end of that month to reconvene in September.
He was however optimistic that within the two weeks of the Senate recess, the President would have submitted the list.
The lawmaker further noted that it is particularly very strategic and helpful for the President to meet the July timeline because the Senate might proceed on its annual end of session holiday at the end of that month to reconvene in September.
“I believe that the President should take advantage of the three weeks the Senate would spend in session between July 2 and the end of that month by ensuring that before we come back from this two weeks recess, the ministerial list is ready so that we simply screen and confirm them within the three weeks that we are going to sit before we go on end of session recess,” the lawmaker said.
“Anything short of that would amount to dragging Nigeria back to the delay experienced four years ago because the Senate won’t resume until around the third week of September.”
